Movement questions

When looking in freelook, is it possible to snap the player to the direction he's looking? As far as I can tell, I have to leave freelook which snaps the view forward again and then turn back to whichever way I was looking, which seems rather clunky and unrealistic and I think if we spot something that looks important, we should be able to quickly turn the character to that direction so that we can check it out through our scopes.

Is there any other sort of snap controls (i.e turn 360)? Probably turning left or right can be done quickly enough using the mouse normally to be realistic (other than when in freelook as described above) but turning 360 is somewhat harder with the mouse and therefore a snap control would seem useful to simulate how quickly it could be done IRL.

What are the Evasive Move controls meant to do and how do we use them? I've got Evasive Left and Evasive Right mapped to Q and E but I haven't managed to work out how to get them to do anything in any stance so far. I don't have Evasive Forward bound, is that useful?

What is Turbo meant to do? It's not currently bound and is separate from Vehicle Turbo (which I have bound to L.Shift) so it would appear to be for Infantry rather than Vehicles.

There's no "snap to view" for infantry just like there isn't for humans. :) You can activate free look just by holding down ALT. So running with W, then hold ALT with your thumb while you look around with the mouse. Release ALT and your view snaps back to center. At least while doing that you just have to turn.

Not sure what Evasive Move controls are to be honest. I use Q and E to lean around corners.

Turbo is basically just "floor it!" for vehicles. Pressing Q will move you forward in a vehicle slowly. W will move you at normal speed. E will move you as fast as the vehicle can go. Be wary though since many vehicles don't handle very well at higher speeds. Terrain will affect your speed also.

I'd really suggest forgetting everything you know about FPS games with regards to controls and just try to learn ArmA controls at default. It will just get incredibly difficult trying to figure out what to map to what and when you run into trouble and say "I'm not going faster when I hit shift!" people won't come back with "Of course not, shift is for walk!" :)

I know about freelook thanks (I mentioned it several times in my post) :) As I say, in real life a soldier who was looking to the left or right and spotted something would keep looking at it and quickly spin his body and rifle to face in that direction and raise his scope to get a better look. In ArmA, you have to let it snap back to looking straight ahead and then turn, which isn't realistic.

I don't understand why there's Turbo and Vehicle Turbo is they both do the same thing (i.e. speed up vehicles).

I'm aware of what shift does thanks, I might still have a lot to learn about how to survive in ArmA, but I've spent far more time than I'd like setting up the controls and know what most of them do, just these few remaining that I don't understand which might be useful but then again if someone who's been playing as long as you still doesn't know what they're for, maybe not ;)

I think spending time setting up arma2 can be frustrating, but it is well worth that time. Some items in the controls list have been added since arma2 came out, so maybe for further development etc. If I use SMK mod (not too often), I will use the ‘Turbo’ for that as it needs a ‘Turbo’ key. With smk you have quite a few evasive movements, i.e. left, right, forward rolls etc, even shooting from a side position laying down, jumping walls etc. The only evasive movements as standard are really roll left roll right whilst prone.

Don’t think it matters how long you have played the series, you will always learn something new almost every week, and of course never stop tweaking settings.. I quite like doing that..

:)

Yeah I've got SMK but haven't got round to using it yet so I really need to do that ;)
