ralphwiggum 6 Posted June 23, 2002 all right...after getting my post count deduced and full of rage, I decided that it's about time i own a handgun. I still haven't decided upon whether I get one or not, but it's matter of time before i get one, and want to get your experienced advice. I'd really like to get advice from serious firearm lovers. This will be my first firearm purchase, and I want this to be enjoyable. So I listed some handguns I find worthwhile. And if you noticed, all of them are 9mm-s. Why? cuz I'm nuts. it'll be months from now if I get one, and want to make some good decisions.

Grey Fox 0 Posted June 23, 2002 Personally I liked the M92F. It felt good in my hands and had a pretty soft recoil and barrel rise. Are you just looking for a 9mm or are you also looking for something in .40 or .45?
EveronVetsAgainstTheWar 1 Posted June 23, 2002 I say get them all.

Grey Fox 0 Posted June 23, 2002 Why get those pistols if you can get a rifle and convert it to full auto. Or for personal defese how 'bout an illegal sawed off shotgun. I have a sawed off shotgun(barrel under 18inches in length) and it is more effective than a pistol at close range. If your going leisure why not a Remington 700? Bolt action rifles are simpler, more reliable, and more accurate.
Grey Fox 0 Posted June 23, 2002 If you wanna save money on ammo use a 9mm to .22 converter kit. Also for 9mm buy in bulk. Not sure what the prices are know but its cheaper to buy 1000 shots at once rather than 50 at a time. Aren't magazines limited to 10 shots for civilians? Cause most 9mm in the military hold in the area of about 15-
Aculaud 0 Posted June 23, 2002 other - if youre full of rage, there are only two choices: desert eagle of whatever caliber you want or a 410 (shotgun) revolver
168GRN HPBT 0 Posted June 23, 2002 I have a 1911a1 in .45 cheap to run(i reload) and dam good fun (SPRINGFEILD make them in .9mm & .40cal). take the glocks and put them in the fire, they realy sux, and they get realy crappy after they have fired 500+rounds (lots of extra movement where their should not be) . But the rest of the guns listed are not utter crap. good luck picking one

I want pistol for leisure shooting. unfortunately, i live in suburbs and there are not enough open area for Remington 700(that will be my first rifle, btw). I'm not looking into full-auto thing, just for recreational use. If I want to shoot long range, I'd have to drive sometime, and at this moment, that does not seem to be my favorite thig to do on weekends. in CA, if the gun was made/bought b4 some yr(1990?) you can still have 15round mag. anything after that(new ones) have 10 mag. I really don't care about how many ammos I can stuff in. and thanx for tip on buying ammos.
Warin 0 Posted June 23, 2002 HK USP or SOCOM... whichever you can get in the civilian side of thinks. Heckler and Koch make excellent weapons of all varieties. I am starting to be interested in target shooting, and here is the handgun I want.
LBGS_Stewart 0 Posted June 23, 2002 i have a colt 1911A1 from the 1970, fun to shoot but tends to hurt the ears abit IMO. has a pritty soft recoil also i love it. i have never shot a 9MM so i could tell you. i have shot 44-40 and 38-40 and 32APC pistols but never a 9MM. Grey Fox 0 Posted June 23, 2002 Yeah a HK Mark 23 (SOCOM) would be nice. Cmon Ralph .45 all the way! 9mm is way too soft for you.

Full-auto firearms are not available to non-LEOs. Assault rifles are also off-limits. Sawed-off shotguns are naturally off-limits. If you were to argue that these are all to be kept only for the most dire situation when you must defend your life or that of your loved ones, I'd reply that you might succeed in that endeavor, but you would then be spending several years in either State or Federal prision (or both), depending on who gets to prosecute you first. That is in addition to any civil lawsuits you will face, in addition to a felony conviction and subsequent loss of several of your civil liberties such as voting and owning firearms. timmy 0 Posted June 23, 2002 why are sawed off shotguns illegal?
Mister Frag 0 Posted June 23, 2002 I'd punt on the Glock 17 and 19, not because I don't like Glocks (which I don't, incidentally), but because the primary reason for having one of these is that they are high-capacity firearms. Since you can only (legally) get 10 round magazines for them, why pay the extra money and have a bulkier handgun without being able to take advantage of their primary feature? Regarding the 9mm caliber, I have no real issue with its performance, other than to say that the .40S&W offers far better stopping power, based on actual street shootings and not something like the Sarnow formula, than a 9mm, all in a package that produces only slightly more felt recoil. I in fact have a Browning HiPower made by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium that is chambered in 9mm, and love it, but when TSHTF, my sidearm is going to be one of my H&K USPs in .40S&W. The reason why I wouldn't use the HiPower is because as a single-action handgun, it doesn't have second-strike capability. Finally, check with the California Department of Justice to see if the handgun(s) you are interested in are approved for sale in California. As of January 1, 2001, they have to pass a safety certification in order to be manufactured/imported/sold in the state -- you can find that list HERE. It is also classified as a Destructive Device, so it is regulated by Federal Law as well. Even if it wasn't illegal, I don't see what the point is. If the shotgun spreads the shot in a wide pattern, it isn't going to be effective. When using buckshot, you only get nine pellets (with 00), and you really want to put all of them on target. If you are using birdshot, you aren't using an effective load to begin with. People who know use chokes on tactical shotguns (except when using slugs or door busters) for a reason. E6Hotel 0 Posted June 23, 2002 I'd suggest the Sig 229 in .40. Â Reasonable size, comfortable, and NO EXTERNAL SAFETY to worry about sweeping. Glocks are very nice (especially for the money) but in my experience the handgrip angle is too extreme -- since I developed pistol muscle memory with the M9 (Beretta 92), I always end up with the front sight too high on target when presenting with a Glock. Â It only takes a fraction of a second to compensate, but if you're in a situation where you're using your secondary (i.e. in the middle of a gunfight and your primary has gone down), you don't have time to spare. The 92 is a decent issue pistol, but I've seen too many cracked locking blocks to consider buying one. Semper Fi
