zamani532 1 Posted March 19, 2012 Let me just start off by saying I'm pretty enthusiastic about modding, and I have technical ability just so you know I'm not blindly running here for help without any focus. I want to learn how to create player models for my ArmA2 minimod I want to start off making, I have tons of reference images and a understanding of what I want it to look like.. but how would I go about doing this? I only have experience making basic 3d Geometry in other engines, so I understand basic xyz etc but where do I start, what do I need to do to create my player models and what would I use to do so? I don't think it would be hard because I'm doing it for multiplayer therefor faces etc arent really needed correct me if I'm wrong. Ugh.. please show me the right direction I'm lost and I don't know what programs to use to do this.
PuFu 4600 Posted March 19, 2012 Let me just start off by saying I'm pretty enthusiastic about modding, and I have technical ability just so you know I'm not blindly running here for help without any focus. What do you mean by that? Because, 1 sentence apart, you contradict yourself (or maybe you just meant something different here): I want to learn how to create player models for my ArmA2 minimod I want to start off making, I have tons of reference images and a understanding of what I want it to look like.. but how would I go about doing this? I only have experience making basic 3d Geometry in other engines, so I understand basic xyz etc but where do I start, what do I need to do to create my player models and what would I use to do so? That is really a very generic question. You would need to be more precise next time. For now, a very generic answer: 1. You would need a 3D modelling software (blender/max/maya/xsi/modo/lightwave/cinema4d/wings3d and last but not least BIS O2). You could always do it in a sculpting software such as mudbox/zbrush/sculptris etc 2. You would need to have the (average) skills to use any of the above 3. You would also need patience, and a good understanding of human anatomy. skinning/rigging and animating techniques. 4. You would also needs a texturing software and the skills to use it, such a PhototShop or Gimp. Understading what UVWs are and what they do is advisable. 4. A good place to start would be to download BIS sample files for A2. I don't think it would be hard because I'm doing it for multiplayer therefor faces etc arent really needed correct me if I'm wrong. You are correct to a certain point. The head model is provided in the same samples, and it is used as proxy. If you really want to, you could create your own head mesh. That said, it doesn't really make your job a lot easier.
zamani532 1 Posted March 19, 2012 Hey thanks for the response, I meant I'm usually good with this kind of stuff but I just need direction, what to use etc. Could I just build off the bis samples and add what I need such as uniform items like ammo pouches and helmets instead of sculpting a human body? Why redo what has already been done?
