zxc 0 Posted May 21, 2002 I've got 512Mb DDR and I'm running Win98SE. Under winXP, I had purely & simply removed the swap file and I never had any memory shortage or any pb. But winXP pissed me off coz' it uses too much ressources, it's too big and I went back to win98SE. But win98SE cannot use more than 256Mb (or 128Mb, can't remember), which now forces me to create a swap file of 300Mb to play ofp. Is there any tweak forcing win98SE to use up to 512Mb of RAM (b4 using the swap file) or any software/utility doing it?? Or am I f*cked? Cheers in advance! ALDEGA 0 Posted May 21, 2002 It can use more than 256 mb, but win9x just isn't considered very good at managing the memory. Btw, OF normally doesn't use over 256 (you can see this in the preferences utility), unless you have a mission with 100 different addons btw, you should never disable the swap file. troop 0 Posted May 21, 2002 zxc, You need this little efficient tool for W'98 http://www.outertech.com/ (Cacheman5.11) For your amount of RAM, use following settings: Right Hand tab 'Cache' [Disk Cache] - Min/Max Disk Cache Sliders both to 65.536 (enabled tickmark! Chunk Size 1024 or 2048 (experiment) Right Hand tab 'RAM' [Optimization] - Tickmark 2 through 3 (1 is not needed for '98) enabled Right Hand tab 'Tweaks' [Disk] - VFAT - 1024 or 1536 (experiment) I/O pagelock limit - 32MB Read Ahead - 128kb IO pagebuffer 16kb (Some of these settings are only avail with NT/W2K/XP, so you can ignore greyed out sliders. Also note, too high settings will negate the effectiveness;..yes, W'98 isn't the best OS for memory handling) Then in the file menue, choose 'Save settings' You can store different profiles to experiment with (create/overwrite) Keep in mind you have to reboot after each change of settings/loading an different profile. --- Still remind, OFP _needs_ an Win-swapfile of at least 300-400 MB (despite the 'Conservative Swap File Usage' setting) i.e. for errorless saving.
