The story CNN reported apparently omitted a few things.

For starters, Roberts had only his sidearm when he fell from the helicopter; he lost his rifle moments ealier when he helped another soldier into the Chinook while it was on the ground.

After he fell from the chopper, he apparently took out an enemy gun crew with his sidearm, and then used their machinegun (a PK or DS series) until it jammed or ran out of ammunition.

From what I have seen and heard, that whole episode was a big snafu. The Chinook landed in a spot that had been pre-sited with machine guns and mortars, the guerrillas waited until half of the group had gotten out, and then let them have it. It is a testament to their training, equipment, and luck that they got away as lightly as they did

the reason the LZ was hot was because our afghan "allies" "forgot" to tell us they decided it was too "unsafe" to clear it out and went back home, or at least that's what i read a month or so ago.

That is a very effective technique that the Mujahedeen developed when the Russians where in Afghanistan.

They would scope out likely landing zones in advance, find concealment, and sight in their machine guns and mortars. The next step was sometimes the offering of a irresistable target, such as a seemingly isolated patrol of fighters, or a campsite. There would often be high casualties among the decoy patrol, but the locals have always been willing to die for their cause.
