Curve interpolation, anyone done it already?

I've done quadratic bezier curves (pretty easy), but when going higher order, I realize (without trying) that bezier will cause way too much smoothing. I'm not a mathematician (or a proper coder), so I'm wandering if others have done curves differently, i.e. nurbs?

It's just for a thought experiment and nothing important, so don't pull off hours to make it from scratch. But if already done I'd like to have a look at it.
