Explosions in opf suck big time!

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I played Delta Force 3, and I launched an AT-4 against 2 soldiers, the Explosions were far better than in OFP, I also think the sound of an Glock 18 of Delta Force 3, Rocks!! Also the death-animations of the enemy rocks, and if you shoot them they starve immediately, something which OPF doesn't do, Hey, Make no mistake about it, I think OPF, is the best wargame ever, but with a little help from Delta Force 3, it could be the best game for years to come,

yeah, this is not Total Recall or anything like that. This is a realistic, excellent war-game. the explosions are realistic and great.

hmm i played Delta force first edition.... this was really pityfull...

Well the explosion in OPF 3 ver Beta 4995 will certainly be very beautiful. *compare what is comparable, the aim of DF3 arent the same as OPF*

But i just mind if u watch a little bit too much Hollywood film where the FX guy load the thing with fuel.

i once see an air exercice in Coętquidan camp (french earth officer training camp) were i was in college... they fired a lot of rockets to some tank carcass... i only see a flash and a lot of dust in the air... explosion? well where was the flame ? realism, i dunno seeing the flame in OPF explosion

I admit, when I shoot an mortar in OPF, it looks stunning,(very realistic) but when I am flying in an AH64 and then shooting 57mm missiles on the ground, I really think the explosions suck, I mean, Orange Balls, as Explosions? Come on, thats not real,

they're fine. you can't blow someone's arm off but that doesn't make it any less fun.

Well, it would be more fun to blow off an arm, Methinks, But did anyone of you ever heard the sound of the Glock 18 from Delta Force 3? Thats an cool sound!

More complaints about OFP? It seems like everytime I come here theres always someone bashing it for this and that. Theres always something wrong with the tree or the buildings or the units themselves.

didn't sound all that great to me, maybe i need to get my ears checked.

OFP has a lot more explosions than DF3. if you went around making them all high-res textures could you imagine what would happen what would happen someone went around in an MI-17 holding down the fire key?

I only need the Mi17 and nothing else on desert island firing all its rockets and my computer gets bogged down full stop. With a PIII 450, 256mb RAM and a TNT2.

450? yeesh and i thought my 1.4 was outdated. take my suggestion and don't put the napalm script onto the rockets biggrin.gif

I have a friend that offered to update my computer for nothing. He got me a Duron 900 CPU and its on my desk right here. It won't fit in this shitty board but he's getting a better board for it. He's getting something out of it too as we can play lan games then smile.gif

Well, I got a Pentium III 2.0 Ghz Processor, with an GeForce2 card, what about that, huh?

Boast all you like, Pentium is shit, Gforce is. I'm not a greedy bastard that wants everything just because it might be faster or hotter like everyone else. I can make do with what I got. Too bad there are people out there that can't. I see no need for a 2GHz CPU. The reason peoples systems are slow with all that shit is because they push for the highest res they can get. Stupid in my opinion.

Also I believe that AMD is faster than Pentium so this my be a 900 MHz but it might be faster than a 1.2GHz Pentium. Altho I'm not sure if thats the correct speed.

LOL!

While the explosions in Flashpoint could be improved (AP rounds NOT exploding) I think there are other areas to be improved. Even when my framerates are smooth, when I start holding the fire key in the Mi-17 my frames really take a hit a drop from about 35fps down to about 4fps from what I could estimate.

I like the explosions, they are enough.

Some explosion sounds could use improvement, but I don't expect BIS to improve them, just let us replace the sound files with our own. Currently I think that this requires a modified config, which is banned on dedicated servers.

Anyway, ever seen explosions in actual combat simulators used by the military? They have just enough effect for you to realize that something blew up, that's it.

So let me get this straight, you don't like the explosions, why? They don't shoot huge fireballs into the air like a desiel charge used in holiwood? Smoke and derbis is all you're going to see unless you take something out with a ton of fuel in it. A fuel truck would go sky high, but that's about it.

lol i have exactly the same system, but it can handle everything except zooming in on a smoke grenade.

come on.. ppl..

face it ofp isn't looking very good in any perspect...

characters are THE most horrible (animation included).. landscape, vegitation, some units, buildings, explosions ...

not that the explosions in DF3 looks any better..  they are in fact quite ugly too.

the best implementation I've seen so far is Medal of Honer - Allied Assault..  kicking lots of dirt up as they go off.

(D-day invasion thingie)

well, not that it bothers me that much, some it does though.. but the game is still fun to play..

and I have some faith in BIS.. eg. Resistance..  (better vegitation) by improving graphics in iterations over the time to come.

Sorry, I cannot agree with that. Some of the animation is a bit rough and it has some clipping problems sure. I think however it looks very realistic on the whole. That is what I want, realism not over the top cinema effects.

And comparing it to Allied Assault is a bit of a joke. Sure allied assault looks better in many ways but it only has to create a couple of hundred square feet of world with seldom more than a dozen men in it. It has limited AI, simplistic combat and minimal interaction with the environment. This is not an attack on it as a game. Simply an obseravation that its easy to create eye candy if you're not doing any real work.

I think that watching a night battle in OFP ( especially with armour ), or a special ops raid at sunrise or countless other UNSCRIPTED moments in OFP can produce beauty in a very natural and convincing manner and are far more satisfying that all the tiny set pieces in its more 'dramatic' rivals.

I agree on the visual special effects in general could be more realistic in OFP, they just don´t look good or appropiate in daylight conditions, colors are just odd and very simple. However, play the same mission at night, and you will be in for a surprise, as explosions look much better because of the lighting used.

Some flaws concerning realism:

- When you throw a standard fragmentation handgrenade in RL during daylight, there is no visible fire to the eye like seen in OFP during the detonation process. There is a shockwave visible depending on surface structure, and smoke development, thats about it.

If you played MOHAA; although the game is highly action orientated, the grenade explosions are one of the best i´ve seen yet in computergame.

- APFSDS rounds do not explode on impact, especially not on the ground. An 120mm APFSDS projectile (penetrator) is basically a metal rod, looking like a stretched dart. It´s made out of Wolfram-Carbide or depleted uranium alloyed w. titanium, having a sectional density of 26.1 (a 220gr .300 cal bullet has a SD of 0,343 for comparison), no material or inlays that would cause an explosion effect like seen in OFP. It weights around 9.41 pounds and is about 6" diameter, 19" long travelling at ca. 5480 fps with sub MOA accuracy.

An APFSDS round however could cause indirectly an explosion, i.e. when it succeeds penetrating the armor and inflame ammunition magazines stored in the fighting compartment, that would be equal to total destruction of the target under normal circumstances.

apfsds-longrodpenetrator.jpg

apfsds-sabot-falloff.jpg

The penetrator itself is much smaller than the diameter of the gun barrel, it needs "brackets" for stabilisation and to build up enough velocity/pressure, the brackets do seperate from the penetrator as soon as it leaves the gun muzzle.

- tracers sad.gif , i always have them disabled, they are neither  eyecandy nor realistic.

Explosions could be more volumetric, brighter and more concentrated and most important better animated, rather than having dull, unsharp and stretched textures blended in and out like in a slideshow.

A visible shockwave would also be nice and is not hard to implement.

When a shaped charge warhead hits, or during a fuel explosion, there should also be more dirty smoke added, some darker smoke mixed into rather than almost clean white water vapor.

One thing that does look good is the black smoke after a vehicle has been destroyed.
