Medium Utility Helicopters
leftskidlow2 replied to GrumpyRhino's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
This is great! Thanks so much for integrating the advanced flight model. I'm having fun just loading everything to the max then trying to land on mountain peaks and what not. The UH-1's with the advanced flight model for Vietnam scenarios is something I've wanted to see for a long time and now it's possible. I hope this gets more people interested in the new flight model. -
Arma 3 Helicopters DLC Discussion (dev branch)
leftskidlow2 replied to FredAirland's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
My main issues right now are the manual trim and random wind directions. With a Saitek X-52, I had to use Joy2key to set manual trim keyboard commands to the joystick hat and then map them in Arma3. There was more to it than that but I'm trying to keep it simple. I'm of the opinion that it is very important to map cyclic trim to a joystick hat vs joystick X,Y,Z position because it creates a cognitive reference point to how the rotor disc is configured. I also do not think that the anti torque pedals should be a part of trim. I've only flown smaller helicopters but there was no trimming for the pedals. Once you get used to it, the pedals are a great kinesthetic indicator for how much power you have left to pull. The wind... I have no idea what's going on, I do a flyover and scout out the LZ and the wind can be drastically different a couple hundred meters away. The good thing is that wind doesn't matter that much without settling with power/vortex ring state simulation. -
O2 Skewed model import from blender
leftskidlow2 replied to leftskidlow2's topic in ARMA 3 - MODELLING - (O2)
Thanks anyway Saltator, it's always possible someone will stumble upon this thread later that didn't know about the script. These normals are going to be an absolute nightmare. I'm using ctrl-n but even when I get all the normals corrected before the final "join," blender still decides to flip various objects' normals at the final join. At that point my only option is to go in manually face by face and flip them back...ugh -
O2 Skewed model import from blender
leftskidlow2 replied to leftskidlow2's topic in ARMA 3 - MODELLING - (O2)
That did it, thanks so much. Now I just have to figure out why my normals are all screwed up on the duplicated half, should be easy enough to fix though. -
I'm fairly new to 3d modeling, blender, and O2 so this is probably my fault. I'm using the blender arma tools to export a p3d and 02 completely skews the model. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves and hopefully someone who has run into this issue before can save me: edit: Seems to have something to do with duplicating or mirroring. I've been working on the model with just half and was planning to mirror everything when I'm done. If I export the half to p3d, it imports mostly ok in O2. http://i.imgur.com/ssKdjar.jpg http://i.imgur.com/GkDLY3z.jpg Thanks!

[WIP] AHFM - Advanced Helicopter Flight Model
leftskidlow2 replied to brainslush's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Neat idea. If you are going to put an emphasis on the effect of wind then probably then biggest though on a helicopter pilots mind is translational lift and it's increased effect when taking off and landing into the wind. It seems like it could be done with something like: if indicated airspeed < 16 knots, then maximum available power = 85 % I also wonder if limiting the maximum available power could simulate payload. Something like every solider onboard reduces max availible power by 1%. There are a lot more experienced pilots on these forums then myself but if you need any technical input feel free to ask, I was a civilian helicopter CFI about 5 years ago. -
I just put together this video from last weekend in Reno, Nevada. It's about the sounds so there is no music and the video quality/lighting is kind of messed up (I didn't know what I was doing with my camera). Anyway if you like airplane noise then you should like this, watch it in HD:

Where to start with ToH modding?
leftskidlow2 replied to monoRAIL's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
It's been a while so I could be wrong, but didn't they release the medium helicopter (example) sample here: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Take_On_Helicopters:_Samples -
I don't think that is the case. We have already seen multiple flight model mods released but we've seen zero mods that have an original 3D helicopter model imported.
