  3. Kunar Province, Afghanistan Pre-op Briefing and Order for Operation On Tuesday April 30, 2013, Combat Outpost (COP) Robstrepo received a light mortar shelling and took small arms fire. The occupants of the COP, the 10th Mountain Division's Bravo Company Second Platoon returned fire. During the fighting, a Sergeant with the 10th was shot in the throat and died on a helicopter back to Camp Branca. In a retaliation effort, the 10th Mountain Division pushed a counter offensive into the mountains to the south west hoping to relieve insurgent pressure on the Combat Outpost. The fighting lasted throughout May 1 into the early hours of May 2, with insurgent casualties ranging from 20-30 and one friendly injury. During the fighting, a soldier acquired an insurgent radio on a frequency with infrequent chatter in Pashti language. Since then, Intelligence has been monitoring and translating radio transmissions by insurgents. According to a report by Intel, the insurgents are planning a massive coordinated attack on the COP sometime May 4, most likely in the evening. The outpost will be on high alert until then. The 75th Ranger Regiment, 24th STS, and 160th SOAR have been tasked with reinforcing Robstrepo once it is attacked and push another counter-offensive into the mountains. Time of operation: The three detachments are to remain on standby throughout the day, but the attack is most likely to occur during the evening at approximately 1900 hours. Weather: The weather should be clear, sunny, and warm. High of 94F in the valley, and a low of 47F in the mountains. Mission: Once the outpost notifies all surrounding forces of the attack, 160th SOAR will scramble two UH-60M Blackhawks containing command elements of the 75th and 25th in the lead helo, and an assault team in the trail Blackhawk, through Korengal Valley and approach the outpost from the northeast at a low altitude; 160th will also be operating two AH-64D Apache Longbows as close air support aircraft. The blackhawks are to land in the COP, unload, and egress out of the AO in the shortest time possible. Ground forces, once dropped off, are to provide immediate assistance to the outpost and engage all insurgent fighters in the area. Once the insurgents begin to retreat, the Rangers are to begin the counter offensive, pushing up the mountain in whichever direction the attack comes from and locate the likely insurgent camp near the top. Once this is accomplished, the Rangers will begin moving back down the mountain to an altitude and area appropriate for evac and egress to Camp Branca for a debriefing. Callsigns: Lead Blackhawk - Tiger 1 Trail Blackhawk - Tiger 2 Ground Command - Dragon Actual Occupants of Tiger 1 - Nightmare 1 Occupants of Tiger 2 - Nightmare 2 (Command callsigns will still apply, squad level and down callsigns will be irrelevant.) Apaches: Korengal Valley is civilian-occupied. Hold fire, engage only on targets if requested by JTAC or taking direct fire from targets. Ensure that any targets engaged are holding a weapon and are hostile before firing. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF THIS ROE! Violations of an RoE may result in a court-martial hearing. Enemy Forces Expect combatant resistance to be heavy, enemy numbers high, and equipment dirt cheap. You will be fighting Taliban/Korengali fighters, it should be nothing new to you. Eastern Bloc weapons and a lot of determination should be anticipated.
