    Realistic joystick?

Hungo...your products are top notch! Easily the best and most endorsed choice by real pilots! I am just on a very limited budget and have been forced to get creative.
  2. could you post the file here? I can never seem to get the files into a pbo properly...

    Realistic joystick?

I have been working on some budget home made controls designs as well, but I haven't been able to progress past the design phase since the workshop is not heated, and I am in the process of moving. Hopefully soon I can get back to work. this is the link to the plans i put up on google docs since Meg@Uplo@d is, well...:jail: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5gkrP8qO5OZV2N3Q2RmZjJRVWFpYW9TM21lUUt0Zw I'm in the process of a new design using the Thrustmaster T16000M that Hon0 is referring to, I've ordered one from Amazon and I will be taking it apart to use the components to build my setup, this is the least expensive option that uses Hall sensors. I will document my process for others to see, comment on, and improve.

    Realistic joystick?

the least expensive option is to buy the joystick from your local computer store and remove the centering spring. check out the homebuilt forum at Hovercontrol: http://www.hovercontrol.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?;act=SF;f=43 ..and I also found another manufacturer, but could not find any reviews of their product: http://shop.c-tekflight.com/Cyclic-Controls_c2.htm

    What a Beatuiful Game

I concur...BIS have tapped into every flight simmer's dream. I just want to keep encouraging them to press forward. When the FM is right, I can foresee the collision of worlds.

    Flight dynamics (important issues)

The problem is that BIS is walking a tightrope between the loyal Arma fans and the flight sim community they are trying to reach out to. The Arma fans have been happily playing BIS games without the use of realistic flight controls because the primary function of previous titles doesn't require them. The flight sim community would never think of using anything less than realistic flight controls because the primary function of sim software is flight. In my opinion, (read my opinion...so I don't upset anyone) BIS needs to concentrate on the opinions of the flight sim community for TOH and not let the opinions of the loyal Arma fans influence the direction they are going with TOH. I know this will probably upset certain users playing with KB&M. Don't worry though...Arma 3 is coming, and I have no doubts that BIS will fulfill or die trying to fulfill the expectations of the loyal Arma fans with the new title. I hope they continue to go the direction of realistic sim with TOH, if they do, they have the holy grail of helicopter sims at their fingertips.
  7. EXACTLY! Honestly what needs to happen is a change in the way the difficulty settings and flight model settings are differentiated in the options menu. The difficulty options should be separate from the flight model. That way, you can set your flight model to be flown using a kb&m but still set your difficulty to Expert. or maybe just renamed from expert to realistic, then kb&m players won't think that they are having to play the game on a lower level. If BIS can pull off a realistic Helicopter flight model the sim market and all the helinuts( Hovercontrol :) ) will embrace TOH and the community will boom.
  8. read the rotorcraft flying handbook. there is a link to a PDF on these forums i just can't remember where. nightsta1ker is referring to the common misconceptions of flight control. like in an airplane on landing approach. speed is controlled by pulling back or pushing forward on the controls and altitude is controlled by the throttle. that's backwards from what most people think that have not had any formal flight training or read aerodynamic theory in flight training publications. rate of closure is the speed at which you get closer to your intended landing spot in speed and height.
  9. no it's not normal helicopter behavior. I had a problem similar to this, then i noticed during calibration that my throttle (collective) axis was interfering with my x axis. so i bought an $18 logitech atk3 and problem solved.
  10. Great work! You should upload to Simviation and Hovercontrol for the same reason.
  11. keep practicing :) it's the most solid advice for helicopter simulation. If you find yourself getting frustrated... take a break, go read the rotorcraft handbook, or have a beer, or do some yoga...then come back and practice some more.

    Disappointed

no...we all got the point. we are just countering your point.

    Flight dynamics (important issues)

Have any of the real world pilots flown TOH since patch 1.03? I feel that the ground effect and sink rate are much improved, even better than community patch 3, but the body of the helicopter is still twitchy as compared to the CP3. ie: the slow speed handling characteristics were better/more realistic with CP3 but the collective and ground effect feel with left pedal torque effects are better with 1.03.
  14. I've actually tried it both ways. Mod folder first, then directly in the addon folder. Either way it's not working for me. my head stops at the window. it worked great before the 1.03 patch...
  15. Anyone else having less head movement with this addon since 1.03? i reinstalled after the patch and still can't get my head out of the window to look down like before.
  16. Thanks BeePee that was it. I should have just looked at one of my saved missions, doh! for the record, C:\Users\XXX\Documents\Takeonhelicoptersotherprofiles\missions\SlingLoadTraining.South_Asia_H\HERE or if you haven't created a separate user profile, C:\Users\XXX\Documents\Takeonhelicopters\missions\SlingLoadTraining.South_Asia_H\HERE
  17. I tried "C:\users\xxx\documents\takeonhelicopters\missions\slingloadtraining\here" and "C:\users\xxx\documents\takeonhelicoptersotherprofiles\xxx\missions\slingloadtraining\here" still no go. I open the editor on Southeast Asia and the mission is not there...
  18. your hardware is just a little dated to run TOH. I have a core 2 quad Q8200 at 2.84Ghz with 6GB ram an ATI HD 6770 and i use ultimate defrag with TOH files on my outer disk rings and I can run low to mid settings with draw set to around 5500m to get playable FPS of 25-30. turn all your settings to the minimum and see how the game runs. If it's playable, start moving sliders up one at a time, one position at a time. update your drivers. If your cards are capable run FXAA instead of Anti Aliasing. even some of the guys on the forums here with brand new top end rigs can't run maxed settings with smooth frames 100% of the time.
  19. I put it in a folder in my missions but I don't think I named the folder properly. I will try again tonight. Thanks! Also...how do you keep the waypoint icons on in expert?
  20. i can't get this mission to work...anyone want to help an editing newb out?
  21. very nice! don't take too long finding an upload site...:)
  22. coming from other flight sims, I completely disagree. here comes a little white lie.... "Microsoft regularly has developers patrolling their forums and is very attentive to user suggestions and real pilot feedback" ahem... I'm elated that a developer like BIS has taken on my favorite flight sim genre. TOH has been released for less than six months and we have already had several patches that have greatly improved usability and flight dynamics. the light model is really close, the medium is getting there and I haven't flown the heavy enough to comment, but wow!...it took years to get other flight sims to fly like this!

    Using mouse look

most flight sims are the "norm" he is talking about. The view is default to a tophat and the mouse only moves the cursor around the virtual cockpit. Just stick with it. you'll get used to it and start to like it better. besides, you can't get out of the heli in any other sim, and the mouse look is crucial for any navigation outside of a vehicle.
  24. what kind of mac were you running? could you not run TOH in an emulation environment? I love Mac's, just can't afford one right now...
