Differnces between Arma 2: free and retail Arma 2 CO

I"m considering buying arma: X and would like feedback on the multiplayer community in arma 2: CO. IF you guys could spare time to let me know some info on these topics that would be great! 1. Is it fairly easy to find a server to play on with 10+ active players in arma 2: CO? 2. Are games like warfare: Benny edition popular in arma 2: CO? 3. I have read about the ACE mod and it seems like something I like. Can I play on many servers using this mod? Thanks to anyone who may provide me some feedback :)
