  1. It's been done in custom maps; it's more than possible on the current engine. Especially, considering that they would be tweaking it to handle such cities, and that such 'fps loss' only happens to those who play with excessive graphical settings. I play with normal and properly tweaked settings and never does Arma2 lag anywhere, with a 2004 computer. Considering those who I know are playing Arma2 (having much better computers), it would just take some little tweaking down to 'normal' or 'above normal' settings for them if they are actually lagging. Sometimes its not all about the graphics. Anyways, check out this example for yourself. Have fun and bye.
  2. Sure it's been brought up but use a custom map like Fallujah and you're set to go.
  3. I don't care about this. Arma2 runs fine for me a GTX 275 and a dual core, especially if you tweak the settings. Making it run in 'super mode' only makes it harder to play (blurrier, laggier, more pixels thus harder to aim across the screen). If you want performance gains with decent but not quite top of the line hardware, try 800x600 with AA on and see how smoothly it runs. Tweak 'sceneComplexity' down to about 50000-70000(max polygons drawn on screen). You only need at least 800 or less view distance for any ground battle, unless you're flying an attack chopper. Make it look decent but not so much that it becomes hard to play or laggy. If you want graphical gains at expense of performance and money, go ahead.. I get my thrill from being a better soldier in gameplay than admiring the view and getting shot like most seem to enjoy.

    Bugs,Quirks, & Suggestions.

I don't think the "AI sees through bushes/foliage" issues ever had to do with plant objects, but with the grass made by setting terrain detail on in the video options. This is the first game which allows for such high rendering of grass, and on maps like Chernarus it gives a clear advantage to the AI that it is invisible to them. So, I play with it disabled personally.

How to control NAPA ALLIED Group ?

Money is used for buying infantry, equipment, defenses, and everything excluding the "base" structures (Barracks/Light Vehicle Factory/and Vehicle Supply Point) which you buy with supplies instead. Once you deploy a vehicle supply point and HQ, trucks should start spawning which complete patrols between each captured city for supplies and money. You can use it to buy units (BRDM, vehicles, infantry), equipment (preferably SVD/RPG7 for this mission) and place base defenses near your HQ.

How to control NAPA ALLIED Group ?

When I did that mission: 1st Town: I set Razor Team to stealth and had them prone into first town to give light support (because they kept dieing and I had to restart). Novy Sobor should be taken completely by yourself with only Razor Team, moving first to the camp on the east end, taking out the MG gunner, capturing that side camp, and then moving down to harass the enemy. It is difficult and you might die a couple of times, but by shooting the gunners off the vehicles you should be able to proceed through the town. Be sure to check on your team or make them stop somewhere, as they can still potentially die and make you have to restart. Watch the cutscenes if you want and then deploy a barracks, a base with simple defenses, etc. Defenses don't seem to matter much because no one attacks the town, but it feels safer to have them. 2nd Town: For Stary Sobor, I finally realized how to move those allied units and I moved all of them to the first camp. There is one static MG gunner there, so be sure to take him out. Once you hold that area, you can easily capture the town just by standing in the main bunker. Then, you should slowly clear out the other units in the town (2/3 Russian APCs, 2 technicals, and a couple of infantry). You will probably have to purchase an RPG-7 if you don't have one to deal with those APCs. You shouldn't waste much AI here, as they probably will just get mowed down. 3rd/4th Town: After this, I returned to base and set up my Light Vehicle Factory and created about 3 BRDMs. I commanded all my friendly units to start skirmishing on the border of the 3rd town. With the BRDMs and allied forces, I was able to take the next town within about a minute, and then returnedto base after a radio message. You will then probably see some civies in a white pickup, and you can accept their mission to go down to Vyshnoye and defend it from a small attack if you want. The radio message guy will say you have a chance to kill Prizak (NAPA leader), so I personally went there on the way down to Vyshnoye and shot him. After that, you should be clear to take the next city (which only has light infantry) and finish the mission using your BRDM and friendly units. You might even want to make a vehicle factory first because using a BRDM makes it much easier to seize a town and you usually won't die immediately if you get ambushed. There's also many other orders and ways of doing things.
  8. I'm using Beta 86652 at the moment. I recently went (1.60RC1 -> Reinstall -> 1.59 -> Beta 86652). I had better performance with RC1, but I downgraded to use JayArma2Lib(mod) with a group last sunday. I am on NAPA's side. But it seems to work now that I replayed Badlands straight into Dogs of War. I recall that I exited the game right after beating the mission, so maybe some data wasn't saved properly. Anyways, it is fixed thank you.
  9. I'm still getting the issue on Dogs of War: "alliance between guerrillas and BLUFOR has ended", and then NAPA starts firing at you during the conversation.
  10. I think RCs should not be released as tests or betas. The RCs just kind of confuse the whole process by making you think it will come out. The additions are nice as well, but they should be released as betas and then once a beta seems to be working as best as possible, then that's when you make a full official patch that just updates everything to 1.60.xxxxx (or at this point maybe 1.61 for the 'fix it all' patch).
  11. Great job! + getting +15-20 fps + tons of major/minor bug fixes which were properly tweaked and fixed + internet play a lot smoother + haven't gotten any crashes + just feels much better, more stable, and smoother overall + good to know how many issues were fixed and optimizations were put in For me this patch is perfect so far, but more servers need to update to it : P
  12. I know I saw this somewhere before, but I couldn't find it anywhere so I decided to post it again. When I turn on AA my fps increases by about 20 (70-80 to 100-115), however the game trees become all fuzzy and hazy as if they are made of nets or something. I run everything tweaked on low due to preference but now that I am changing settings to normal I'm noticing this.. It looks better when it's disabled really. AA on setting 8 (looks the same on just about any setting) AA disabled My AtOC = 7 in the Arma2oa.cfg and my SceneComplexity is tweaked at 70000 (max polygons to render) in the Arma2oaprofile.cfg. I like to tweak it and not use the new graphics options. Anyways, any idea why this happens? Nevermind it was the ATOC. Still seems weird that with it on I get a +20 fps boost.
  13. I think you're sort of trying to make a revolution from nothing. Perhaps it can be 'updated' to ACRE standards, however right now it is not buggy and is quite reliable. The IRC chat works perfect and is useful for those having issues, and the VON system is stable and has enough quality to stream a song if you set the proper server setting. vonCodecQuality = 10; // Quality from 1 to 10 I've seen success in groups which have used VON, and by using good structure you can use it effectively. +Command or Squad Lead + Alpha Leader (a1) - x (a2) - x (a3) - x (a4) - x (a5) + Bravo Leader (b1) - x (b2) - x (b3) - x (b4) + Convoy/Air/Support Assets - Member units (c,a,s) All member units are on group chat, use a script or join in the right slot to join the right group. Global channel (or in TvT it would be Side channel) is to report in to Squad Leader, support assets or other squads. It does work, but it is not as realistic or good as using Acre. Also, I am sure many users would not like the only means of communication to be through a possible website forum and by going on Arma2. Using Teamspeak at the moment seems the best option even if VON was improved, and ACRE is doing fine with it as well.. It has never actually failed or become too buggy to use. The channels can be used to broadcast in vehicles, to only group, to team, etc so it has some "basic" organization in it.

    ArmA 3 Maps

Yeah I like how the map seems to consist of some unique landscape and fairly large cities. There haven't been many big cities in Arma2, and the landscape has been mostly wilderness.. I miss the Arma1 map feel where there are large cities/towns in a desert type environment. Sahrani was a very large and fun city. Arma3 should have a system where at least for maps they can be downloaded directly from the server, because on Arma2 I find the custom islands to be much higher quality and much funner to do any sort of mission on compared to the stock maps which seemed much blander in comparison. Someone earlier told me that the smallest city should be about the size of Chernogorsk was so I'm happy about this.
  15. I actually kinda miss the way how Arma1 had big cities like the capitol of Sahrani. I've found that the official maps on Arma2 are mostly wilderness and feature very small cities. Even if that is accurate to the representation of the area, I think there should at least be one urban city type map included. Zargabad just didn't cut it for some reason: even one custom map called Fallujah is about 4x as big in the actual city area but it lags a lot less. Zargabad is quite small as well but there is something missing that the older games had which Arma2 didn't. I think I've seen some pretty big cities though in the Arma3 videos so that's a good thing.

    Scripting

I think they've been working on it.. but they need to definitely create more threads. Basically, a thread is a separate set of code which is executed simultaneously with the main one. This way, you can utilize all the processing power without having one script or many scripts clog up the whole thing and make it slower. If you notice on ACE2 or missions with lots of scripts, the radars or friendly name tags take many seconds to update their position, rather than milliseconds (instantaneously as they were designed to be), this is an example of when your scripting engine gets 'clogged'. The graphics engine runs fine, luckily, but if this engine is to based mostly on configurations and PBO scripts then there should be a performance monitor that creates a new thread every time one gets overloaded, or at least use each thread to its fullest potential. If needed, I would be happy with Arma1 graphics but highly improved engine code.
  17. I was wondering if there ever was a mod that makes 'tree monsters', basically they are like trees that moan and they are alive, and they move pretty fast and can attack tanks realistically with a big metal thud noise like AHhhh. That would be great. Just wondering if there is like walking bushes or trees at least, that would be kinda awesome. I had this posted before but meh, it was locked for not being here apparently. also, I kinda miss that old 'KLUNK' sound like in Operation Flashpoint, when you shoot some soldier and you hear this big sound like a bullet hitting a hollow tube or something lul. I get little or no satisfaction from mowing down troops in Arma2 anymore, and I think a lot of it can be brought back with those old, strange, effects (at least in a mod or something).
  18. Simple.. They are little baby princesses who don't know how to play properly, so they have to manually tweak the AI to shoot/react like utter shit, and sadly still manage to get their squads decimated by the AI at times! When you join an Arma game, get good at it, etc. then you'll eventually get bored, cuz that's what happens when you play with AI set to Cadet and lower manually, even if the server is set to run on Regular/Veteran or something like that. To keep the immersion up, you should have the AI be good yet because they're still AI you can then find expert ways to destroy them, making it all much more funner. But, the community is shying away from old rambo tactics, and more towards the typical 'realism groups' springing up using Ace2, trying out random mods like 'hey this is fun' in an attempt to make it less boring/more fun for themselves. To the above: That's just an illusion, if you take 5 'lone wolfs' and put them in a squad, and then made an insanely hard mission for them, you'd be impressed. And it's always fun for others to see it's possible, and look up to those people, striving to become masters at the game (lone wolfing) themselves.. the illusion of command being hard/boring comes from those players who get shot up, caught up reviving each other in an attempt to be tactical, and failing to master the game (still a 'game', not even close to reality), and those people clog up the whole process when they go into some Humvee, get shot by an RPG, or just die from their lack of individual training/skill. and overall I think warfare servers difficulty is fine, and PVP balances it anyways
  19. Go play your princess games then! TF2, CS:S are dead to me, look at this This is TFC This is TF2 TF2, more players, but also more children, less mature teens/adults. CS:S is not soo bad, but still the older ones are preferable.. The old good stuff is taken out, gameplay is made too easy, and the only improvement is the graphics.. BF2 seems like a great FPS game, but this is a whole different category, and BF2's size/scope will never be able to compare. If you put a BF2 or even newer BF3 map in the size of an Arma3 map, you really wouldn't have as much room for peculiar details and such. If you want to be Mr. Hollywood Shootout Guy, go to BF2. Then, you can have fun being realistic on a simulator if you're into that kinda stuff on Arma2. Also, you should play original Operation Flashpoint if you didn't, and play the campaign, it's great. You get to be a lone survivor and rambo stuff pretty good, very fun game, while still maintaining the basic 'big size' and some early BI trajectory stuff.
  20. Hey listen, I've played OFP, Arma1, and now Arma2, and it's gotten more and more realistic.. OFP you technically get thrown out there as a lone survivor and fight for your life like rambo, taking out tanks left and right, and as it progresses along it becomes harder to do so in Arma1 through Arma2 to today. But I must say, everyone seems to love OFP! The reason why is because it's small, simple, unique, and great versus bulky, computer demanding, filled with unneeded visuals etc. But the main thing is, in OFP I can find a server running a simple coop mission, and join some guys and play it, and if we fail then we can retry it. For some damn reason, it's a lot more enjoyable in simple ol' OFP (even though you can't even join a game while it's in progress cuz its old) to play coop and fun game modes, than it is in confusing, bulky, mod-littered Arma2. The players are also much more friendly in OFP, and you've never seen such a type of DM where people are sniping you standing up with G36's from 1000meters every time they turn a corner.. I can rambo as such on Arma2, but only because I know how OFP was, and I see a lot of people on Arma2 who just think 'Oh Its a simulator, I'm supposed to get shot and die and not be able to shoot 100 people', yet there I am , infantry soldier having the best fuckin time with my buds, 50 infantry kills, 5 tank kills, no deaths, etc.. Why? OFP's multiplayer was much simpler, friendlier, had a better smaller community, and was less just 'random people joining, dieing, getting shot, clutterish visuals and shit all over the damn place'.. Arma2 definately needs some kinda better base for 'coop', 'ctf', etc. and just simple vanilla Arma2, not having to join a stupid Realism Unit just to have 'fun' while playing coop, install 2GB ace2 + their custom mods, etc. and have them get shot up 'realistically'.. I sometimes fantasize having a DM match against 'realism unit' guys with all their mods and shit on, and see how they would like it! I'd have fun killing them while they think they're secure with their 'tactics' haha, but they wouldn't.. cuz they're just running in there dieing, you see my point? Yea. Need more 'vanilla Arma2', getting sniped in the face by elite AI is the norm, you don't need to tweak it so they fire 5000 bullets, miss all but one, and then proceed to fire at the corner you disappeared at. You can fuckin be a rambo squad if you weren't always tweaking the MP coop AI to be pussies, and still just using 'spam players into the zone getting killed' tactics like I've seen on all the normal arma2 coop servers: which is very damn unattractive btw. Sry, I can type real fast so this is like nothing, but if you bothered reading, I'mma end my rant here..
  21. I agree with this completely. If you can't do it yet, don't do it and make it into a lag fest. It's good enough having such a game, and all these people who have been spoiled by FPS franchises should realize as the thread creator said that real life isn't like hollywood. Lots of players of Arma2 forget the rambo style of gameplay introduced in OFP which was slowly lost by the slow progression towards things like 'ACE2 Realism Units', which I have seen have low quality players who only care about the realism and complain about many other things. Notably I'm not someone who can change the progression/change in a giant gaming community's thoughts as it happens, but as usual old seemed much better and new seems to be filled with spoiled princesses who want the FX and not concentrating on getting 'gritty better' with what they have. Come on, 3v1 in a forest, I'll snipe you guys favoring this close up while you complain about 'warping'. Ok, whatever. Basic physics: sure thing, but don't overwork it and make it need extreme processing power on everything.
  22. AI can always be tweaked/improved. For example, making AI just fire faster when around buildings/cities would be an enhancement; and we need to improve their driving times between far cities. But I think the AI is not buggy/bad, it's just that people assume AI is crappy when they see the typical pub servers that Arma2 is running, which literally set the AI to react (very) slowly and inaccurately. If you actually left them how they were and ran it on Veteran perhaps, you would be forced to play better, and AI would react faster etc. I disagree about the netcode, it's good considering all that it has to handle in a big game, but it can probably still be improved. But again, lots of pub players complain about warping/lag, when to veteran players such as myself it seems like it's not even there even when not having played for long periods of time (even with more ping than said 'complainer'). Lag is definately a factor, but it's typically used to blame for someone who misses a shot or something. Overall, the current engine is good but even older players might be turned off if they join a pub server, get told by some 'noob clan' that because they have no tags they cannot fly choppers or use vehicles, and then go and see laggy AI which seem to move their arms at 1 mile per hour: and still manage to kill the 'noob clan' xD; The foreign CTI and CTF servers are really the best, I wish there was more of that in the US,Canada,SouthAmerica region instead of just this co-op which I criticize for these reasons I listed. There is always room for: 1) AI Enhancement and 2) Graphics/Engine overhaul and improvements, and there's always mods/missions released practically every day.
  23. A memory leak won't be fixed by reformatting, unless just reinstalling fixes it. Try changing your 'video memory' setting yet in video options? Set it to low and see if it makes a difference.
  24. - Continue improving the AI, until they become almost human-like in their decisions when set to a high or certain skill level/setting. There can be an option to enable AI v2, which would be the new experimental AI system. - Less bloom and stupid 'fake' graphical effects. I kind of miss OFP and Arma1: even loading up maps that use Arma1 stuff on Arma2 makes it look like it's Arma1. So, I'd say the most improved thing is the detail of the maps themselves, like Chernarus and Takistan, but if you load it up with Arma1 objects on a map like Panthera, you can see it looks the same.. You don't need to pack in bloom, PostProcess, and make a simple game be constantly feeling laggy/glitchy instead of simple like the older series games. The amount of players still on Arma1/OFP1 play them because of this.. So, Less crashes, lagginess, blurriness, and more 'smooth and simple' stuff. Make performance enhancements on your engine instead of pushing in more blurry beta crap. - More impact on certain weapons. This might be a simulator, but it's still the tuned-down game version of the main simulator. Weapons which used to be cannons like the G36A, M4A1, M4A3, etc. are now like pebble shooters once you are shooting >300m. This makes so many weapons be worthless and literally restricts people who don't want to constantly be at a disadvantage to only use sniper rifles and high powered weapons.. Not that this isn't good, but there's only like 3-4 ones that meet this requirement, so the weapons basically suck. - Less 'new stuff', less 'tweaking settings and configs', and more making the game playable and fun. Everyone who wants this is usually using ACE2 for their group/realism unit, and they still aren't extremely satisfied with that.
  25. Hey, I set up Arma2 again and I got this error on certain servers like 'Wrong signature BAF_E.pbo', but I ignored it.. Last night, I updated to 1.59 and joined a server but my screen turned light-blue and I couldn't do anything but restart. I know that it isn't a virus because I've already manually looked for it, but I found a weird looking driver that I removed which made it so I could come on these forums (going on these forums made a white screen come up and I had to restart). I know why its there, so that people can't join and use their own PBOs and mods to get an advantage.. but really if this is your new protection I hope that you fix it before you make it replace the old one. I'm basically screwed because I don't want to reformat everything to just play this game again. I reinstalled it and the problem is still there. So Thank you very much for the new protection BI, it really helps. :(
