  1. There is an option in the video options for aspect ratio. If you have a 1080p screen then set this to 16:9.
  2. Watching your CPU usage while playing BF3 is beautiful. Each core loaded very evenly. Never seen such good threading in a game, and I think BF3 will scale up to 8 cores pretty nicely.

    What keeps bringing me back to ARMA despite its flaws is the awesome community that really cares about it and wants to make it better. And this topic is an example of that great spirit. May we continue to debate and update forever.

    I think, or at least I hope, they haven't added shader effects/particles for objects submerged in water, and it looks odd. They will surely add spray/ripples later.
  5. i7-930 is 15% slower than 15-2500k/2600k and that's not even taking into account the massive overclocking headroom of the newer processors. Personally I think you are better off holding out until ivy bridge hits because you wanna be ARMA 3 ready if you want a 3-4 year system. i7 930 wont be good in 2-3 years max so I'd say forget socket 1366. Perhaps Sandy bridge-E is a good option for you? Check it out. But yeah Ivy bridge next March probably your best option.

    Why warfare fails as a game mode

    What I find interesting is that the actually gameplay of operation flashpoint resistance with MFCTI is far superior to that of ARMA 2's warfare mode, in my opinion. In MFCTI it really did feel like there was a war going on, and it felt like you had a real role to play. I am sorry to say, but I feel like the AI has actually gone backwards in some ways since ofp. My opinion: the whole AI system has become too complicated. I think BIS should strip it down to far less features that actually work perfectly.
  7. I just read some news that looked ominous for us gen3 P67/Z68 owners. Looks like due to changes to UEFI these so-called gen3 ivy bridge ready boards aren't gonna be compatible. There's gonna be a world of pain for the vendors if Intel fucks us on this one I tell ya. Just google "ivy bridge upgrade" news and you'll see what I mean. I sure hope the news is inaccurate.

    CPU/GPU Balance?

    I'll never say never, but I think the 64-bit thing is a no-go because BIS' HDD streaming tech is currently working out for them and there are other problems with using vast amounts of RAM. Dwarden mentioned something like this. How does a 64-bit executable improve CPU performance?

  10. Wait for Ivy bridge (march 2012) getting a 2500k when you have a 2400 is a slight whaste I think, remember you'll have to buy a decent cooler too if you want 4.6ghz.

From what I've heard they're not going to release a 6-core Ivy on socket 1155- and that makes sense because it would obviously be more powerful than SB-E cpus on socket R and render that product segment irrelevant only a few months after release. I really doubt we'll ever see more than 4 cores on 1155. But one can always hope. I got myself a gen3 Z68 board so if a 6-core Ivy comes out for 1155 it's gonna pop right in quick smart.
  12. My 2500k @4.8ghz doesn't come close to going that low unless I put like the maximum number of groups possible fighting in a small area. For practical ARMA situations the 2500k allows perfect gameplay for me. Did you mean socket 2011? No such thing as socket r now or in the foreseeable future... Socket 2011 will probably offer lower A2 performance- A2 can only use four cores, and a six-core is not going to be able to overclock as high as a quad core. Those 2011 CPUs are still going to be the same sandy bridge architecture. I dunno where you're getting 6ghz from. Unless the extra l3 cache is going to be significant for games... Still nowhere near worth it for the price...
  13. Great idea with the FOV slider. Right now it is difficult to setup an ideal FOV, and considering that FOV can be changed on the fly in-game (can be changed to 4:3, 16:9 etc.) I think this is definitely doable in the engine right now. If you're listening BIS, maybe you could trial this in an ARMA 2 beta patch?

No self-respecting apple-age consumer wants to have a funny looking helmet on when they play their games! If only the demographic of ARMA players was actually significant...

HR4, when we change the resolution with a triple-monitor setup, we also change the field of view; the game renders a picture over a much wider field of view, so in answer to your question, yes, the game can render what you call "peripheral view" as peripheral view is just a different way of saying "the things we see on the wider extremes of our field-of-view." It's not the sort of thing that is "built-in" to a game; every game renders a picture with a particular field of view, and that field of view is determined somewhere in code, and so it is a fundamental property of three-dimensional game environments the "peripheral vision" can be rendered; you just change the field of view.
  16. yeah, at 6048X1080 FOV Left should be 4.2. The formula is; FOVL=(W/H)*FOVT That is, the number for FOV Left equals your total width in pixels divided by your total height in pixels, and then that multiplied by whatever FOV Top is. Beyond that, the only thing you can do is angle your screens differently. There will always be some distortion because with such a wide FOV the screen should really be curved. In actuality, unless every pixel on-screen is equidistant to the centre point between your eyes, IE. The screen looking sort of like a big long oval concave lens, even with a single screen there is FOV distortion, just less noticable than with eyefinity. I also suggest playing around with FOV top and left. There will be a sweet spot where it is correct for the distance at which you are sitting from your screen. Just keep it in the right ratio as above. That's the other part of the equation; the ideal FOV is dependant on screen sizes and your distance from them.
  17. OK, navigate to C:\users\your username\my documents\arma2\ open up the file that is named your username in a text editor such as notepad. If there are two files there with your username as their name, do this for both of them. scroll down to the bottom of the file. See the lines that say FOV top and FOV left. the number next to FOV left should be close to 5.3333 times the number next to FOV top. So if FOV top is 0.75, as is default for arma 2, then FOV left should be exactly 4. In summary, set FOV top to 0.75 and FOV left to 4. If it is already at those values, then this isn't your problem. Edit:The fact that you're playing at 5760X1080 tells me you haven't setup bezel correction. In AMD catalyst, go to your display group, right click it, and find the bezel correction setup.

    IMO, LOD transitions are the most important thing that needs improvement in terms of graphics.
  20. mate, I had a 4870 which matches the 6770 very very closely. It works quite well for ARMA 2 but it is too close to the 6850 in price (my new card) if you are considering a 6770 then go for the 6850. Powercolor is the cheapest brand here, I have one of those, and I am very very happy with it.

    when I said ARMA 3 looks very similar to ARMA 3, I was being literal ie. the quality of graphics. Of course I agree that ARMA 3 is looking like it will add amazing new things. But visually, it looks like being a fairly modest incremental upgrade.

    The game looks hardly different to ARMA2, just more colourful. ARMA 3 won't be the massive beast ARMA 2 was at release. 2 doesn't even fully utilize a quad core. If 3 is optomized for quads no-one with an i7 920+ will need to upgrade CPU. Graphics card requirement will be higher due to the longer draw distances. But again, I think BIS has learned to just back off a little as 2 was kinda ridiculous with its requirements at launch.

    Personally, I think that Arma 2's sounds do the job, especially with positioning. I think that battlefield's sound engine is all gimmicky reverb. All the environments in battlefield games sound like concert halls and are very murky.

    ArmA3 Wishlist and Ideas

    had to move my post... If you have a decent processor you know that the only time this game slows down is when AI activity increases beyond a certain point (obviously dependent on processor speed) That is not to say that ARMA 2's AI system isn't a massively awesome achievement. However, in ARMA 3 I do hope to see the possibility of more threading of AI routines. The fact that all the AI runs on one core holds the game back. (I wonder if ARMA 3 will be able to utilize 6+ cores? haven't seen that question directly asked yet.)
