Arma 2 1.06 Patch Suggestions
Michael Withstand replied to Archamedes's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
It is?(I own Arma 2 and patched it to 1.05 and play with ACE2 mostly online) But the enemy still have no problem spotting me in grass it seems :D But I do sometimes see the enemy dipped into the ground from the distance. But does that effect is reciprocal too that the enemy would not see me in the distance while prone or crouching in grass? -
ATTN NOOBIES! - New to ArmA II or OA - Here's the place for your questions

Can someone provide me a guide to snipe in vanilla how to use these dotted ranging and how much to pull for some ranges for all the sniping rifle both Russian and American. It's not in the manual. I've got the manual for ace though but either the reticle is different ot the ballistic table is or both. -

Umm it was more or less a level sniping. My guess is the reticle is different in vanilla. My second guess would be that the ballistic tables are different Or both. Yes I'm aware of that but right now I'm just exploring the sniping portion of the game and this is kind of a let down. If they made it like in ACE I would be very very happy :) -
Arma 2 1.06 Patch Suggestions
Michael Withstand replied to Archamedes's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
I have an idea on how to simulate grass ability to conceal the player from AI sight and vice versa to conceal AI soldiers from player sight. Since grass is not rendered at longer distance perhpas it could be made that at longer distance those who crawl or kneel being sighted as partially(or even fully) dipped into the ground for both the AI and the player. The longer the distance the more dipped a target is into the ground hence hindering sight altogether(for the hiding party and the observing party). This is to simulate grass ability to fully conceal and partially conceal soldiers both AI and player controlled. Movement while prone or crouching would make concealment less effective. So the degree of dipping into the ground to simulate grass concealment are dependent on three things: 1 distance, 2 camo(snipers are harder to spot in grass) and movement. Of course the player point of view will never actually dip into the ground but he's already hindered by the grass anyway. -

I've found out to my dismay that even the formula height of target=distance to target mils can only be applied to ACE2. In vanilla they are not accurate :( Am I mistaken here. I tried calculating distance with the dot ranging in vanilla then confirming with Shift-K but Shift K would give me a longer distance by about 200 m :butbut: Guess that explains why I'm so helpless in vanilla when sniping. In short distances which requires no pulling up it may be fine but that's not markmanship at all. Can somebody confirm my observation or debunk it? Man now I find the reason to always play with ACE2 all the time. -

yea sniping is about an art of knowing when to engage and when not to and when engaging knowing what to engage. But in online games people just compare the number of kills. They hardly play tactical. Most just playing with gun blazing . . .:( that leaves the sniper no choice but to rake in kills too. -

Umm yes you're right the dot ranging is still the same however it seems that in vanilla one has to hold his scope much higher to hit the same distance. Or am I wrong. This information of how much pulling up or holding up(in terms of mils dot) that he is required to cover the ranged distance is nonexistent to the user in vanilla. In the 800-1000m ranges I usually stop aiming for the head and usually aim for the center mass and get a hit on the chest or leg. They still die 95 percent of the time that way . --EDIT Removed-- Yes without silencer a sniper would not last long if he doesn't relocate fast. And a sniper would have a hard time entering cities or towns in ArmA2 due to the small sizes of the towns and cities and the extended zooming of his scope which would make him more exposed and be a less effective combatants in closer ranges. A sniper can't compete head to head with other riflemen who assault towns or cities. A sniper could however operate alone harassing towns and cities from the distance(600-1,000m) and if his sniping rifle came equipped with silencer the enemy troops would not even know where to return fire. A sniper is also effective at scouting enemy positions and dispositions and pass the information to friendlies which could prepare an effective forces to combat the enemy dispositions in the location or called in air support. I just like the idea of a lone wolf. My biggest tally harassing a city from the distance is 17 dead without being killed. I know it's not that many for the expert but I'm happy staying at distance and creating havoc all over in the distance.:bounce3: -
[Request]Is there any long range sniping practice mission?
Michael Withstand posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - USER MISSIONS
So is there one for different distances from 600m to 800m to 1,200m to 1,600m or even more(with mostly stationary targets and a few walking ones)? With ACE2 and ACEX there's the TAC-50SD sniping rifle that could engage a target up to 2,000m and I just think I need more practice. -

Umm I'm having a dilemma that while I'm getting good in sniping with ACE2 I just realized that the ranging is all different for vanilla. I'm becoming expert in sniping in 300-1000 meter ranges(my favorite ranges are 800-1000 meter with TAC-50 SD rifle) with ACE2 with windage compensation and all ;) well as long as the target is stationary but I'm hopeless in vanilla :( Can anyone provide me a link to guide me with sniping (using the scope reticle) in vanilla? -

Michael Withstand replied to Michael Withstand's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - USER MISSIONS
Tried it out it's not what I had in mind but that could do I guess. The problem is most of the troopers there stand in the same vicinity(thus distance) between 850-950m(ran to about that distance to them). Once you judged the range the rest is too easy. -

Yea I figured it's not going to be difficult but I just got the game for a wekk and haven't touched the editor yet. Figured someone already came out with his version of sniping practice a much better alternative than my noobish attempt. :) At least until I find the time to play with the editor and try it myself. -

Umm pls fix the blackscreen bug related to NVidia GPU. And no my GPU isn't failing as I only have this problem with ArmA 2. Luckily it doesn't happen that very often but still this is critical issue. I'm only concerned with this. btw ArmA 2 is GREAT. Don't regret every penny spent on it. Great job BI.:) -
Heck as English is not my native often I do not quite catch 100% what the others were saying.

I see thanks for the explanation

My conclusion is ArmA 2 is waaaay more fun than the other games out there. It has stolen to be my No.1 All time favorite game of all time in just a week. First impression was that it wasn't quite the game I liked but after sometime it grows on you and I just fell in love with it. So yes ArmA 2 is FUN. ps: Now you can ban me :D

I just had one enemy soldier standing up then put both his hands on his head indicating surrender after his whole company was wiped out while trying to counterattack in an airfield. Does the AI have moral too? Or was it a script? Played with ACE2.

ArmA 2 is amazing. Will arrowhead have the exact same of specs requirement?
Michael Withstand posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
My rig is a bit outdated. I may have to update my CPU to at least a quadcore from the current dual core of 2.8GHz. So I'm thinking to get arrowhead when it comes out but does it have the same requirement as ArmaA 2 or is it more demanding? If the requirement is too step I may pass on this game at least until I get myself a new rig sometimes next year. -

Ooops I must have missed it. Great news then I'll be getting it. Just got the game for half a week and I can say that it's probably my No.1 game of all time since yesterday :bounce3:. -
The thing is OFP: DR IS NOT a bad game. It's open ended and has a vast terrain and relatively light on resources. If one never played ArmA 2 and invest much time on it then OFP: DR IS FUN and VERY FUN INDEED. However ArmA 2 gives the more hardcore player those who seek more realism) so much more degree of freedom. ArmA 2 is the definitive choice for hardcore military fan. And the Multiplayer is MORE FUN than in OFP: DR to people who prefer realism. The shortcoming of OFP: DR is probably the halfhearted attempt to approach realism as evident in the UBER body armor that able to withstand mutliple hits without any ill effect to the player. That's probably my biggest gripe about OFP: DR. I think both should be supported by PC players. Not often we get these kind of games coming. As for the original OFP well ArmA 2 is tons better for sure.
