NPC Dialogue Tutorial?
75th-VFS-Striker replied to 75th-VFS-Striker's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
Thank you very much. This is all very helpful. I downloaded your mission and I'll check it out today. -
I've been looking at a lot of Youtube videos but still haven't been able to find any really good information on this. In the original ArmaIII campaign, Captain Miller stands at a table and talks and his character is very animated moving around and pointing. What I want to know is this very difficult to do? I would like to create NPC where you walk up to them and get information. They don't have to be that animated but I would like them to talk using pre-recorded dialogue. I've also seen missions where a text area pops up in front of them and you have to select it to initiate the conversation. Are there any good tutorials on doing these things?

Thank you, that's exactly what I'm doing. I'll also check out H8termaker's as well but can't find them. Would you happen to have a link to the videos or Youtube channel? -

RGR & thanks, I found his tutorials but he goes through stuff so fast it's a little hard to follow. I'll view them again and see if it's something I can work up to. I was hoping that there was something a little slower paced for someone at my level. -
Need help with getting factories and other objects to work
75th-VFS-Striker replied to 75th-VFS-Striker's topic in ARMA 3 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
OK, thanks. I thought it would just be some simple initialization script. I didn't realize it was so involved. I've seen it on a lot of servers in the past and in the old Chernarus campaign so I thought it would be fairly easy to do. -

I've searched the forums and either I'm not searching for the correct thing or it's in a different category. I would like to make the light and heavy factories functional so I can go up to them and order a vehicle. I would also like to make the ground radar station functional so it rotates. Right now they're just static objects and do nothing. Any help would be appreciated. -

OK, You need to calm down and stop being condescending. I didn't yell at anyone or say your jerks for not responding, I just said that you didn't. I also said that I do appreciate the help here. It seems like this is a better place to post problems because most of you are here and available. People don't use email as much as they used to so I probably should have come here first instead. I understand what the problems are now and how to kind of work through them slowly now. I'll try to resolve them on my own and work through them the best I can and won't post here unless I run into a serious problem and need help and I will try to provide more specifics. I'm new to running a dedicated server so a lot of this is foreign to me. I also want to reiterate what I said before. The CUP units and maps are really great and I want to use them. So that's the only reason that I was posting what I did because I wanted to get help so I can make use of them. I'll be happy to donate because you guys deserve it. -

Where it freezes up on loading and you can't get past the map as a client. I was just wondering because it looks like this is an issue directly related to the Australia map. I was just wondering if you had run into any issues like this with the CUP maps. -

OK, it looks like the Australia map is what's causing the error. I removed it from the list and it loads OK now so thank you for that suggestion. I have one other though. Have you run into any problems with CUP being incompatible with Alive? -

OK, you didn't respond to me from the message that I sent you on the 23rd saying that I'm not using Steam Workshop and I also sent you a message yesterday that you didn't respond to. So anyhow, that's why I posted what I did. I'm not angry and you shouldn't be either. I'm just trying to resolve the problem. I also asked about the order of the files and if I needed everything but it looks like I can just use the Terrains Complete only. Is this correct. Disregard, question answered. Anyhow, I am using 2 other maps. Bornholm and Australia. I can try disabling them if that's going to be your next suggestion. -

Because I sent you another email stating that I was still having problems and you either didn't respond or didn't get it. I'm still getting the same error. I'm not running them from the Steam Library on the server. Is it possible to update them on the server when they're not installed from the Library? This is my first time running a dedicated server so I'm not familiar with all of the functions at this time. -

I've been running into a problem with the CUP Terrains Complete and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I run a dedicated server and when I try to load the mod I get this error. Addon 'CUP_Buildings_config' requires addon 'CUP_Buildings2_data'. I don't have this problem using any of the other CUP mods. This just happened after that last BI Arma3 update. I sent the CUP developers an email but they haven't responded to me. -
I've been having this strange problem since I purchased A3. I thought it might be an AMD graphics issue but I just built a brand new system. I have a Rampage IV Extreme with a GTX970 card now with all the latest drivers. Can someone please explain why the ground shifts like this and if there's a fix? I never had this problem with Arma1 or Arma2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kivdn7dtvFk&list=UU7QEGkl52wvpl55_91VvE5A

Hosting settings for optimization questions (not dedicated server)

In ARMAII, ARMAI and OFP I could host quite a few people without any problems and it didn't affect my frame rate. In ARMAIII I can host maybe a couple people and beyond that it starts choking. server.cfg is only for running a dedicated server obviously so where are the settings for bringing down the detail or other aspects to make the data transfer less demanding so I can host 4-5 people smoothly. I can't seem to find any information on that. Can someone point me to the correct .cfg file or where I set the hosting settings to modify for hosting personal sessions. Do changing any of these settings in the user.profile help reduce the load? sceneComplexity=300000; shadowZDistance=100; viewDistance=1500.0001; preferredObjectViewDistance=1000.0001; Also, I'm running a core 2 quad on Win7 with 8Gig of ram and I get anywhere from 4.5 to 5GBTS up upstream bandwidth. Is that enough to handle half a dozen clients or what would be the max even if I optimize everything. Thanks in advance. -

I found out what the problem was. Someone connecting to me was running mods and didn't tell me. The next time he connected he mentioned it and that's when I realized it was his enabled mods that were causing the problem. I've been hosting 6 or 7 people without any problems now. I have plenty of bandwidth and I should be able to host up to 10 players without any trouble. -

Yeah, I bet that the upload demand has increased a lot with ARMA3. Is there a utility that can tell you how much bandwidth is being used or could I just use something like Speedtest.net and do a "minus the difference before and during" sort of test. -

If you're running anti-virus software it could be blocking it as well. Have someone that's trying to connect with you open up a command prompt "cmd in the run window". Have them type in (without the quotes and substituting your IP) "ping 00.00.00.00" You'll need to get your external IP, not your home network IP. www.whatismyip.com will give it to you. It will try to ping your IP 4 times and will give you a result in milliseconds if good or if it's bad you will get "timed out". Also, port forwarding works on most routers but some don't work at all with ARMA2 and ARMA3. I had terrible trouble with an older Linksys router so I purchased a Netgear and all my connection problems went away. And you won't be able to host if you're trying to do so via wireless, you have to be wired directly into your router. Another thing you might want to try is to set your router to static IP mode. Then assign a fixed IP to each computer you have connected to your router. It only works for wired so don't worry about wireless, it's separate system on the router. To do so you'll need the following pieces of information. 1. An IP your going to use for your computer. I use something like 192.168.1.100 and add a digit for each additional computer on the end. So it would be Comp1 192.168.1.100, Comp2 192.168.1.101, Comp3 192.168.1.102 and so on. 2. The default gateway is the IP of your router. 3. The subnet mask you get from your provider and can be found on the router status page. 4. The primary and secondary or preferred and alternate DNS numbers from router status page. Plug them into your network adapter to do static IP. -
This is a problem that's been going on for a long time. I remember them getting stuck even back in OFP but mostly in ARMA, ARMAII and now ARMAIII. I think that I may have found something related to this happening and I'd like you to look into it please. I had just finished a firefight with a group of AI under my command and one of the units was injured. I asked the medic to heal this unit and then another enemy approached our position. I told all the AI to engage the enemy and they did so without any problem. I then told the AI to get back into formation but when they did my previously injured one wouldn't move. I went over to him and kept trying to give him orders but he just wouldn't respond. He was effectively stuck in that position. I did not see any problem with his icon showing that he was still injured but I told the medic to heal him again. Once he was healed he then started responding to my orders again. I've noticed that some orders that you give will make the AI move to a position and not respond again. Also, I've noticed that they will start giving orders to other AI soldiers even though they should be under my command. They will just ignore me and keep following the other AI. I don't know if you guys have addressed any of this under any of the recent patches but the sticking problem especially has been going on for a long time now and is really annoying. I guess that I've just gotten used to it over the years but it would be nice if it could be fixed. BTW, I'm super happy with ARMAIII. The terrain is amazing and the missions that people are making are really good. I really think that this is going to be a very long lived simulation and will go down as one of the best created. Keep up the good work! One other note: The AI could definitely stand to be smarter. They have a tendency to just run around, stop and go back to patrolling after being shot at. I've used ASR AI mod in the past and it really made a difference. Maybe you can incorporate some of that scripting into the game at some point. In real life enemy soldiers triangulate on your position but in ARMA they do not.

I'm getting a "JayArma2Lib not installed" error when I join our server even though it's installed and activated in the launcher. We seem to be having a lot of trouble since updating to 1.62. I deleted the "dsound.dll" file. We're running 1.4.7 Acre and Teamspeak 3.0.7. Would it help to update to 3.0.8. We also seem to experience a lot of trouble with Acre when we update Teamspeak. It seems to cause problems with Acre. -
[ANSWRED] "Connecting Failed" in Peer to Peer Server

I've been a huge fan of BI series of military simulators going back to the original Operation Flashpoint in 2001. I've been experiencing a problem with ARMAII since I purchased and installed it that I haven't experienced with prior versions. This problem occurs in vanilla ARMAII and Operation Arrowhead. Every time I try to create a server on my local machine and have a client connect or Vice/Versa we get a "Connecting Failed" error. I did not experience this problem with either the original 2001 Operation Flashpoint or ARMAI. I run many different online sims in multiplayer so I'm very experienced with setting up P2P servers. I running a Linksys router in non-DHCP mode so it's a very clean connection and the port 2302-2305 (tcp & udp) is set to the host IP. As I stated before I did not have this problem in ARMAI or the original OFP. I've also done many different tests using PF Port Checker and tested the packet loss and up and down speeds with Comcast and I'm getting very good results. I have generally about 10-12 download and 5-6 upload and under 99ms for ping to most continental US servers. This problem has also occurred with two completely different installations of the operating system. I was originally running XP professional and have recently switched to Win7 Professional and still have the exact same problem. A friend of mine in Washington state is also on Comcast and one of the things we did try is that we created a LAN server (I'm in NM) and connected via IP and it worked which is interesting and puzzling at the same time. I do not have any problems connecting to dedicated servers like our squad server (TheFirst2Fight). One of the things that is constant is that when I create or try to connect to a P2P server of one of our squad mates I get a ping in red of 2500. When I connect to our squad server I get a ping of about 60-80. I deleted the line that I highlighted in red out of my config file and it works perfect now so as far as I'm concerned it's fixed. Ports are set in my router now and I don't have to worry about the game setting it any more. -

OK, problem solved. I was confused about a couple different things but after going back and forth from here and emailing BI I was able to work out the final solution on my own. It turns out that it is a router port conflict that was originating from the game. When you install the game and create a player profile you end up with a folder called "Arma2 Other Profiles", I'm sure this is no surprise as a lot of you probably already know that. Inside that folder (again no surprise) is your player profile "player.Arma2OAProfile.cfg" This "player.Arma2OAProfile.cfg" part is important as it's the key to the conflict that I was experiencing. The reason is that I run Operation Arrowhead almost exclusively so the game is accessing my player profile using the "player.Arma2OAProfile.cfg" file. Keep this in mind if you are trying to resolve this issue and you are experiencing a similar problem. It's my understanding that some older routers will have this issue but most newer routers are designed to resolve port conflicts. I've run into this issue with Steelbeasts as well and I'm not exactly sure what the terminology is so excuse me if I'm stating that wrong. I call it port conflict but it may be called something entirely else but the result is the same. The problem I was having was software related pertaining to the port being hard set by the game. I'll explain: In the CFG file towards the bottom there is a section that has some references to MP connection. The section reads: currentCampaign="Campaigns\oaarmycamp"; difficulty="regular"; lastCampaignMission="Civil service"; remoteIPAddress="174.131.54.208"; remotePort=2302; teamSwitchOffsetX=0; teamSwitchOffsetY=0; You'll notice that I have highlighted the offending line here in red. When you remove the port text in the "Create Game" window here... ...it has absolutely nothing to do with removing or disabling the port for the game as far as I know. The port is still hard set by the config file and removing or leaving this blank does absolutely nothing. You can put whatever number you want in here and the port will still be set to whatever it is in the Config file. (maybe someone from BI can clarify this) The solution I found is to use either one or the other but not both. I wasn't sure if it would work or cause a problem but I chose to delete the line from my config file rather than the router. I opened ports "2302-2305 UDP" for the additional ones needed for the in game chat. BI didn't answer my question regarding if it was possible to open multiple ports in the config file. The 2302 is only necessary for the game itself though from what I understand so it looks like it's set primarily for client purposes. I'm not saying that this will work for everyone though. It works for me and now I can host anyone I want. We tested it again tonight and I was able to get several players into my server no problem and the ping is now showing the correct number for each player and not 2500 as it was before. The bottom line is that if you are experiencing a similar problem to the one I was having, either open the port in your router or open it using the config file but do not do both. It causes a conflict that essentially cancels out the port you are trying to open by having them both there! ---------- Post added at 07:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:54 PM ---------- Hey PvPscene, I did try your suggestion here and wanted to thank you for putting it up there. Unfortunately it did not help and I posted what actually resolved the issue. Thanks! -

Yes I saw that they were part of the 1.60 as I was installing, very convenient! I did a quick test this afternoon after installation and I could connect to one of my squad mates servers and I could not before. I changed the MTU setting to 1400 and put the QOS back to enabled and gave priority to port 4 again. I was still seeing 2500 ping but I was able to connect and get in game without any trouble. Hopefully I can host now. I'll let you know as soon as I find out.
