Russian Special Forces: Naval Infantry The Russian Naval Infantry, (Marines, Russian: МорÑÐºÐ°Ñ Ð¿ÐµÑ…Ð¾Ñ‚Ð°, Morskaya Pekhota) are the amphibious force of the Russian Armed Forces. The first Russian naval infantry force was formed in 1705, and since that time they have fought in the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the First and Second World Wars. Under Admiral Gorshkov, the Soviet Navy expanded the reach of the Naval Infantry and deployed them worldwide on numerous occasions. Along with the rest of the Soviet Armed Forces, they fell on hard times since the collapse of the Soviet Union and have been reduced in size. Airborne Troops The Russian Airborne Troops or VDV (from "Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska", Russian: Воздушно-деÑантные войÑка = ВДВ; Air-landing Forces) is an arm of service of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation, on a par with the Strategic Rocket Forces and the Russian Space Forces. First formed before World War II, the force undertook two significant airborne operations and a number of smaller jumps during the war and after 1945 for many years was the largest airborne force in the world. The word desánt, as used in the Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska, is a borrowing of the French descente (‘debarkation’ or ‘landing’). It is also used by the Russian Ground Forces for the desantno-shturmoviye batal′ony (Russian: деÑантно-штурмовые батальоны), the airmobile assault battalions, and by the Russian Naval Infantry in voyenno-morskoy desant (Russian: военно-морÑкой деÑант), an amphibious landing. The airborne, air-assault, and amphibious troops of all services are referred to as desantniki, which literally means ‘those who land’. The term desant is defined by Radzievskii as: Troops intended for landing, or which have already landed on enemy-occupied territory for the purpose of conducting combat operations. According to the transportation method used, a landing force may be amphibious, airborne, or combined; and according to its scale and purpose, such a force may be strategic, operational, or tactical. The concept of desant is linked with the Russian doctrinal emphasis on flanking maneuvers. MVD RF: The Ministerstvo Vnutrennikh Del (MVD) (МВД or МиниÑтерÑтво внутренних дел) was the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Imperial Russia, later USSR, and still bears the same name in Russia. The Ministry is headquartered in Moscow. Militia Spetsnaz OMSN(ОМСÐ-ОтрÑд Милиции Специального ÐазначениÑ) On September 16, 2002, the SOBR was officially dissolved. To date almost all of the SOBR units have been reclassified as OMSN (Otryad Militsii Spetsial'nogo Naznacheniya, Special Police Unit), and are subordinate to the regional criminal police offices. OMSN units are very similar to the SOBR, and are composed of highly professional, senior-ranking police officers (as opposed to OMON units). OMSN units are tasked with fighting criminal elements, drug trafficking and other special operations under the jurisdiction of MVD. Lately, OMSN's premier task has been to combat terrorism for which they have received extensive counter-terrorism training, special weapons and equipment for this role. Due to the popularity of the name, as well as the similarities between SOBR and OMSN, the OMSN is usually still referred to as SOBR by both soldiers and civilians alike. Militia Spetsnaz OMON(ОМОÐ-ОтрÑд Милиции ОÑобого ÐазначениÑ) OMON (Russian: ОтрÑд милиции оÑобого назначениÑ; Otryad Militsii Osobogo Naznacheniya, Special Purpose Police Unit) (ОМОÐ) is a generic name for the system of special units of militsiya (police) within the Russian and earlier the Soviet MVD (Ministry of Internal Affairs). As of 2008, there is an OMON unit in every oblast of Russia, as well as in many major cities; for example, there is an OMON unit within the Moscow City police department, and a separate unit within Moscow Oblast police department. Their motto is "We know no mercy and do not ask for any."[1] OMON also continues to exist in Belarus and some other post-Soviet territories following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Internal Troops of the Ministry for Internal Affairs Internal Troops, full name Internal Troops of the Ministry for Internal Affairs (MVD) (Russian: Внутренние войÑка МиниÑтерÑтва внутренних дел, Vnutrenniye Voiska Ministerstva Vnutrennikh Del; abbreviated Ð’Ð’, VV) is a paramilitary national guard like force in the now-defunct Soviet Union and its successor countries, particularly, in Russia and Ukraine. Internal Troops are subordinated to Internal Affairs Ministries (police) of the respective countries. They are used to support and reinforce the Militsiya, deal with large-scale riots, internal armed conflicts, prison security (except in Russia) and safeguarding of highly-important facilities (like nuclear power plants). As such, the force is involved in all conflicts and violent disturbances in the history of Soviet Union and modern Russia, including Stalin's mass deportations, imprisonments and executions and Chechen wars. During wartime, the Internal Troops fall under Armed Forces military command and fulfill the missions of local defence and rear area security. Spetsnaz Iternal troops. ... GRU RF: Spetsnaz GRU(ГРУ-Главное Разведыательнок управление) GRU or Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye is the foreign military intelligence directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (formerly the Red Army General Staff of the Soviet Union). GRU is the English transliteration of the Russian acronym ГРУ, which stands for "Главное Разведывательное Управление", meaning Main Intelligence Directorate. The full name is GRU GSh (GRU Generalnovo Shtaba, i.e. "GRU of the General Staff"). The GRU is Russia's largest foreign intelligence agency. It deploys six times as many agents in foreign countries as the SVR, which is the KGB intelligence successor. It also commanded 25,000 spetsnaz troops in 1997. FIS(СВР-Служба Внешней Разедки): Spetsnaz Group "Zaslon" The Foreign Intelligence Service (Russian: Служба Внешней Разведки Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki (or SVR) is Russia's primary external intelligence agency. The SVR is the successor of First Chief Directorate (FCD) of the KGB since December 1991.[1] The headquarters of SVR are still in Yasenevo, Moscow, just beyond the Moscow Automobile Ring Road. Unlike the FSB, the SVR is responsible for intelligence and espionage activities outside the Russian Federation. It works in cooperation with the Russian military intelligence organization GRU, which reportedly deployed six times as many spies in foreign countries as the SVR in 1997.[2] However SVR is reportedly more influential behind the scenes than GRU or the FCD was, especially with regard to defining Russian foreign policy.[3] The SVR is also authorized to negotiate anti-terrorist cooperation and intelligence-sharing arrangements with foreign intelligence agencies, and provides analysis and dissemination of intelligence to the Russian president. Spetsnaz FSIN RF: Saturn Group Fakel Group FSB RF: The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) (Russian: ФСБ, Ð¤ÐµÐ´ÐµÑ€Ð°Ð»ÑŒÐ½Ð°Ñ Ñлужба безопаÑноÑти РоÑÑийÑкой Федерации; Federal'naya sluzhba bezopasnosti Rossiyskoy Federatsii) is the main domestic security service of the Russian Federation and the main successor agency of the Soviet-era Cheka, NKVD and KGB. The FSB is involved in counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance. Its headquarters are on Lubyanka Square, downtown Moscow, the same location as the former headquarters of the KGB. The Federal Counterintelligence Service (FSK) was the predecessor of the FSB. A bill calling for the reorganization, expansion and renaming of FSK passed both houses of the Russian parliament and was signed into law on April 3, 1995 by Boris Yeltsin. It was made subordinate to the Ministry of Justice by presidential decree on March 9, 2004. These events marked the creation of the FSB Spetsnaz FSB RF: Alpha Group Vympel Group And many others... Spetsnaz FSB "Alpha" Function Alfa Group's primary function is believed to be to carry out urban counter-terrorist missions under the direct sanction and control of the Russian political leadership. However, little is publicly known and other plausible missions would include a variety of paramilitary, policing and/or covert operations, similar to the missions of its secretive pennant, the "V" Group...
