    SLX Mod WIP

How do the extended AI features (Group Link 3?) compare to the WIP FlexiAI? http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=88194&page=24 I was very much looking forward to that but progress seems to have stopped. This looks like a fantastic mod that fixes many things as elegantly as possible
  2. Jaw dropped! Wow looking absolutely terrific, seeing those familiar WWII tanks in the Arma environment! Well done! This is the number one mod im looking forward to!

    Ultimate Realism

I never said whether the conflict was right or wrong - although that would be a valid question. What i did say is that whatever 'your troops' are doing is not the definition of realism, nor does it mandate a simulation of that conflict. The way you carry on its like its someone's 'duty' to simulate Afghanistan and Iraq. Why on earth should that be? Chernarus's type of conflict is as realistic a conflict as a supposed 'simulation' of Iraq or Afghanistan would be - neither portrays any conflict with many of the most important details, and both types have occured in the past IF you want a 'realistic' portrayal, you DO NOT start from an assumed perspective. What he wants is exactly that - a portrayal of Iraq/Afghanistan from the perspective of the Western soldiers fighting there. The problem is of course that larger questions are lost in translation - who are these groups being fought in 'war on terror', what do they want, why are they fighting us and whose cause is 'right'. Theres also plenty of OTHER conflicts that are just as important for their own people - Gaza, Sri Lanka, etc. Realism =/= British Troop's in Iraq/Afghanistan As for assymetrical warfare - its been seen before and it will be seen again, and i still fail to see whats interesting about modern armies rooting out an inferior insurgent foe, as against more 'all out' types of conflicts. By way of example, i would much rather see the SOVIET experience in Afghanistan portrayed, rather than the British or American, more modern, conflicts. What mandates one be pursued and the other ignored? Or Chechnya - these are much harsher, rougher examples of insurgent armies fighting a conventional force. Okay, ill tone it down and give you better reasons for why i oppose your idea 1) - it will be seen in Arrowhead, there are already mods for it/was seen in Arma 1, and no doubt many other games. 2) - its a relatively low intensity conflict and insurgents do not possess the balance of power in most areas - its not very 'interesting' as a result 3) - it is not the only modern war taking place, and among them, there are more interesting conflicts from the perspective of a combined-arms simulation - Gaza, Chechnya, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan etc 4) - a good game/portrayal requires more than spoon fed ideology from the US/British military, and audiences wont like a portrayal of the Mujahadeen as 'right', even in minor situations. Painting them as 'evil devils' wont exactly do anything much justice, however. The sensitivities with this type of game are extremely high and you are sure to upset some party - hence why Bohemia stick to hypothetical conflicts 5) - Such a conflict is extremely difficult to simulate from a technical perspective, because there are great demands being made of the AI and game assets. You may not be satisfied with the result from the perspective of 'realism', given that you actually fought there But dont worry, Arrowhead will bring something very similar to what you are looking for - and 'real' mods of actual Iraq/Afghanistan battles will surely follow - you will get what you want, but i think you ought to broaden your horizons about the kind of situations youd like to see simulated
  4. No prob, youve already helped a fair bit :) Btw, can i ask what leads you to prefer the GTX 275 over the 4890 so decisively? Is it a personal experience or particular benchmarks?

    Ultimate Realism

Or I know! How about a mission where youre the Sri Lankan army wiping out those nasty Tamils, or part of the Cambodian military putting the smackdown on those nasty tribes people. Or taking control of Pakistan's military as it supposedly 'fights' the Taliban, where you get to shoot at empty houses and abandoned hills! Or better yet, taking control of the Taliban or Mujahadeen or Iraqi insurgents and driving the Americans and their corporations right back out! Maybe a war in Gaza? Clearly 'realism' covers a BIT MORE than just Iraq or Afghanistan. I respect where youre coming from, but do you realise how narrow a field of views and situations you are asking for in the name of realism? Which is a real pity, because not all is as it seems over there
  6. Thanks gms. I am looking forward to this VERY much! I think what you guys are doing is brilliant and really hasnt been seen before in a level of realism that Arma 2 can provide. This mod will be awesome
  7. Thanks very much, i was leaning toward 4890 but reviews consistently show the GTX 275 is quicker. One more question - are the Palit or Gainward branded GTX 275 (which are built using a custom cooler and GTX 285 PCB) any good?
  8. Hi everyone, im looking to improve my Arma 2 (and general gaming) experience with a moderate upgrade. Im having trouble finding performance information on Arma 2 however. Here is my current system: P35 based motherboard (Asus Blitz Formula) E4300 1.8ghz Cpu overclocked to 3.1ghz 4gb of DDR 2 800mhz ram, however the front side bus and ram are highly overclocked 7200rpm 1tb Samsung drive, with a high density per platter - so fairly high performance Soundblaster X-Fi extreme music soundcard 8800 GTS 640mb video card, but i also have an 8800 GTX 768mb card that i can put back in Windows XP 32 bit - i can put Windows 7 in, but i prefer XP to be honest (and its faster) Now I think this was a very decent system, especially because it was bought when Core2's and G80's first came out and provided excellent bang for buck. However, i recognise that some parts are now becoming long in tooth. In my opinion however, upgrading the motherboard or Ram to DDR3 is not going to change much, and while something like a Core 2 E8400 overclocked to ~4ghz would provide a meaningful boost, it would be a fairly expensive upgrade. For these reasons, ive narrowed down my upgrade to a video card up to around $250 AU. These are the cards i was looking at, in this order Ati 4890 Nvidia GTX 275 Nvidia GTX 260 216sp Ati 5770 Ati 4870 Ati 4850 The lower down the list i go, the more i save obviously. What i would like is some advice or better yet, a benchmark comparison between these video cards in Arma 2 - is it worth making this upgrade? What video card should i upgrade to before it becomes a waste of money and overkill? Thanks!

A question for the devs re. Chedaki.

The first clue to understanding the term is to remember that it was not formed in English. The developers are Czech and the term reflects Czech patterns of developing slang from abbreviations, not English references The abbreviated name is ChDKZ - but in czech that 'Ch' sound is one letter. When pronounced in czech, the CDKZ has a softer, more flowing sound than in English (where saying Ch D K Z doesnt lend itself to creating a slang term like 'Chedaki') and Chedaki is quite a natural slang term to create from it In short, you have to remember the term is slang from another language EDIT - if you are wondering why i consider 'Chedaki' a Czech corruption of the ChDKZ movement (which is actually Russian/from Russian speaking part of the population), this is because those who use the term in the game are the Czech speaking population - essentially it is their slang for the movement when its name is translated into Czech. Slang is often a very local phenomenon Forgive me asking, but wouldnt Speyalnogo Naznachenya translate more directly to 'Special Designations', not 'special purpose'? Still, your point remains - any branch can have a special 'purpose' unit
  10. Looking good, but since this is about the Russian army made by a Russian mod team, i have to ask; will a level of objectivity be maintained in, for example, the level of balancing between a tank such as the Tiger and the ubiquitous T34? As good as the T34 was, the exchange rate for a Tiger (how many it took to kill one) stood at something like 9 - almost double the Sherman's 5, despite the T34 being a far better tank (likely poorly trained crews). It would not be doing service to history to have T34's steamrolling everything, something i hope the mod team is aware of

    Dragon Rising has been released

If ive read that correctly, thats just under 1 million total unit sales for the PS3 and 360 (any pc figures?). At say $20-50 revenue from each copy sold thats $20-50 million revenue on what are probably fairly low development costs, judging by the poor quality of the game. As bad as the game is, they probably still turned a profit. Doesnt bode well
