    ArmA 2 I/O analysis results

I've been playing around with the process monitor tool some more. Even though arma2.exe is only using ~700mb there is a lot of activity in the page file. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=798fb57f39f7f5edaf924764f9977b1de04e75f6e8ebb871 I tried to improve performance by creating an extra page file on the ramdisk, this didn't really work because windows uses these files 50/50 doing 2 writing operations to the ramdisk and 2 to the normal pagefile alternately. Moving the pagefile to the ramdrive would probably improve performance. still a bad idea though.
  2. For me maxmem doesn't seem to do anything. the game always uses about 1GB of memory, doesn't matter if I put it on 1500, 700, 500 or 0.

I dont think moving the swapfile is a good idea. If you dont have a lot of ram just put structures.pbo, chernarus.pbo and buildings.pbo on it. And maybe plants2_tree.pbo if you still have space left. These files get more I/O than all other files combined it seems. more results btw. this time playing domination online: http://www.mediafire.com/?woiz5cgn4ao

Liquidpinky, could you maybe change your guide? The shell link extentions are completely unneeded. You can just create a folder named AddOns on your ramdisk (say R:\AddOns) and start arma with adding -mod=R:\ to the shortcut. Dead3yz explains it in more detail in this topic: http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&p=54150 plus, he has some more performance tips

I moved them and made a backup, to make sure the game uses the ramdisk. I dont think it matters though if you just copied them, when the ram folder loads as a mod it should "overwrite" the old files I guess. make an AddOns folder on your ramdisk (probably R:\ ?), put the .pbo's there and then ad -mod=R:\ to your shortcut.

Dont forget chernarus.pbo, it's only 91 mb but has a LOT of I/O

    Yes, I moved the following files to my ramdisk (3.3gb total) now I can fly over an empty chernarus without a hitch but when I'm playing domination online performance is a lot lower, this is because the vehicle's and characters are on the normal HD. still a huge improvement online though, also online. buildings.pbo buildings.pbo.bi.bisign buildings2.pbo buildings2.pbo.bi.bisign buildings2_Ind_CementWorks.pbo buildings2_Ind_CementWorks.pbo.bi.bisign chernarus.pbo chernarus.pbo.bi.bisign chernarus_Data.pbo chernarus_Data.pbo.bi.bisign chernarus_Data_Layers.pbo chernarus_Data_Layers.pbo.bi.bisign misc.pbo misc.pbo.bi.bisign misc2.pbo misc2.pbo.bi.bisign misc3.pbo misc3.pbo.bi.bisign plants2_Bush.pbo plants2_Bush.pbo.bi.bisign plants2_Clutter.pbo plants2_Clutter.pbo.bi.bisign plants2_misc.pbo plants2_misc.pbo.bi.bisign plants2_Plant.pbo plants2_Plant.pbo.bi.bisign plants2_Tree.pbo plants2_Tree.pbo.bi.bisign Roads2.pbo Roads2.pbo.bi.bisign rocks2.pbo rocks2.pbo.bi.bisign sounds.pbo sounds.pbo.bi.bisign structures.pbo structures.pbo.bi.bisign
  9. I was mistaken on the 4gb limit, the 'resident memory' slider went up to 4.4 and I was on 3.5, I just assumed it would stop at 4. and you can use 'system' and 'locked' memory as well. The disk size goes up to 64GB. Qsoft ramdisk has no 4gb limit just to be clear Btw, I found this movie by fragkILLA comparing his normal hd (top) to his raptor (bottom) in armamark <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFe3Tnh3e-o&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFe3Tnh3e-o&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
  10. Does this launcher support modfolders on a different hard drive? I have linebackers launcher installed and it just looks in the arma 2 directory. I use a shortcut to load the most used pbo's to a software ramdisk and add -mod=B:\@ram to the shortcut (B is my ramdisk).
  11. I use Qsoft ramdisk, works for win7 x64, it's shareware that expires on jan1 2010 (and then you can reinstall) it has a maximum size of 4gb but that's perfect for me because I only have 6 gb of ram. edit: my bad, there is a 64GB size limit and that should be plenty you can find it here, be sure to carefully read the installation instructions and also download de gui executable (ramdriveproperties.exe) http://members.fortunecity.com/ramdisk/RAMDisk/ramdriv001.htm

Here are my results, just flying around in the editor, just me in a F35B, not much activity in characters, wheeled, tracked pbo's etc. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=798fb57f39f7f5edaf924764f9977b1de04e75f6e8ebb871

I have created the folder B:\@ram\AddOns (B is my ramdisk) and moved some of the .pbo's there, then I start arma with adding -mod=B:\@ram to the shortcut.
  14. I'm glad it worked, it's working well here too, so well I might want to upgrade to 8gb ram (now I have 6). I made these movies so I could compare performance, they arent very high fps because fraps is too heavy on my system. It's still fast enough to see the terrible slowdowns of the hd though. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vMhjPoeoI&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vMhjPoeoI&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eiqbxJcQFI&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eiqbxJcQFI&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> I had already posted them in this thread: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=88629&page=6 hope the mods dont mind I post them twice.
  15. You dont have to use the link thing at all. just create an addon folder on the ram drive (in my case B:\@ram\AddOns). Just move some .pbo's there and start arma 2 with a shortcut like a mod in my case "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2.exe" -mod=B:\@ram

The excel file isn't working here either. Too bad, it would be great to see the stats of other people. I have used Qsoft ramdisk (shareware again although this one doesnt seem to expire) to create a 3.3gb ramdisk. Then I moved a lot of the .pbo's (basically anything I thought would be on chernarus) to there and just start it as you would a mod. When flying around the island I get hardly any stutters at all (with textures on high) I also made 2 movies to show the difference, too bad fraps is so heavy on my system, normally the game runs fluently (in between the stutters that is), maybe someone with a quadcore could do something similar? <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vMhjPoeoI&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5vMhjPoeoI&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eiqbxJcQFI&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eiqbxJcQFI&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
