No doubt, this person has been the champion of DR and if this is where he gets his much needed attention, so be it. Negative attention seems to be acceptable too, him coming to this forum is like the game "whack a mole", he is the mole and pops his head up here and gets a mallet to the noggen. I guess it's like a drug addiction, once the attention he craves is not coming from his familiar place, the attention here will have to do even if it means being rake across the coals. Calling everyone here a D_ _ K showed his colours. DR will be remembered for the fail that it is. Some may like it, but the fact remains it was not well received by most gamers and was a real disappointment.

Well said, it is the enthusiast or gamer that makes or breaks the overall success of a game. A developer can love what they do, defend it to the Nth degree and if no one buys it, praises it or plays it, what's the point!? It's like musicians that say they play for themselves, but most want their music to be heard and be well received, especially when it comes to making money. What I like about BIS is their business model which supports and works with the fans and modding community well after the sale. Between the mods and the many patches, the hours I've played with their games is well worth the return of my one time investment of $65. I will not buy any other CM software after their display of lies with DR and screwing over the community. BIS has done more than most other game companies with their post sale support.

This forum thread has been entertaining and the way I see it, I've had some laughs out of the disaster that DR is and my financial loss to DR doesn't seem so bad :D This has helped me cope with that loss...lol

Hmmmmm, not quite sure the purpose of this video. I will agree with others about your dedication and enthusiasm to make the game for those that like it better. It's too bad your enthusiasm was not invested in the ARMA II modding community. I will never like DR for sole reason that it's a console port and played with a game pad. Not only that, there are far too many flaws and the game would literally have to be torn down and re-built...literally. ARMA II and BIS's software is just a superior product for what it is trying to be. Almost ten years of BIS software on my hard drive....hmmmmm, says it all for me.
-
Well said, that is the big picture. Right people in the right roles. Let the programmers build the engine, while the story is done by a great author and the artists do their magic with the graphics, and let the other roles bring in the money to make more games....there is a synergy going on here. Dr didn't have the above formula, they missed on the graphics, technical (console port) and story, lame product brought to market.
-
Nah, can't entirely agree with you on this one. A company needs all components (good team to be successful). Your point about the artists, developers etc....is valid and I agree. The issue with CM and DR was based on false marketing. They made promises that the developers could not fill. Here is a point for me. If I was to advocate a product and market something that was to be a sequel to Operation Flashpoint, I would have conviction in BIS being the developer and I would feel more confident in selling it. Why? Because they were the original developers and it was successful. CM gambled on the name and the promises, screen shots, trailors. None of it was delivered. No way would I put any weight into CM. The fine line here is that in business, you have to sell and market, but the thing is man, you better deliver. The customer is king and they'll let you know. I wanted DR to be a good thing and I was sold on it, but as far as I am concerned they did not deliver. I agree that the talent lies within the team members of the project. But it is also the talent of marketing to reach your audience. Just don't exaggerate and lie to a point like CM did with DR, you'll get caught and it'll bite you in the rear.

How many of you old OFP Veterans are still playing BIS games?
Stryker_1 replied to nettrucker's topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
Been playing BIS software since OFP and I never get tired of it. With ARMA II, it keeps evolving in to something better. Almost 10 years, man I can't even begin to think how many hours...LOL -
Basic business 101, supply and demand. The ship will sail if the product sells. Investors see the console market as $$ opportunity and CM appears to be short sighted when considering their reputation as a good games developer. Quality can mean nothing as long as the $$ is rolling in. Look at the North American auto industry, imports have taken a big chunk of market share over recent years. GM always had a philosophy "We Build It, You Buy It" That philosophy worked when you sold everything you made, the quality took a back seat. Consumers in the console market want nothing more than a quick fix and eye candy. Their expectations are lower and the trend with trade ins/ups for console games is working. Buy said title for $65-$70 and once bored with it trade it in for credit and move on to the next. DR great example, I have already given mine away, and I was in EB games the other day, the amount of used copies...LOL...I have countless PC games that I bought years ago and still play to this day. BIS's software is one of them. I have bought BIS's product because it is a PC game and love this kind of simulation. Also because their name is stamped on it! I now watch carefully who the developer is and now really discern before I purchase any game. The crap that is out there  It's interesting that BIS has stayed the course with their business model. BIS has already noted in an interview that they will have to be in the console market for survival. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgkkkKgRSU4 At 4:16 It'll be interesting to see where the games market is headed. Thankfully we'll have ARMA II + Operation Arrowhead + Community for years and years :D

Talk about reading between the lines, this would be a cool mod for ARMA II. Hopefully this gang of members aren't DR diehards and will be open minded when "reviewing options for game platform that might base their mod on"..., what options, it's right here..LOL
-
This is where DR failed from the get go, how can a PC game like the original Operation Flashpoint work the same magic in the world of consoles. Let's not even mention ARMA & ARMA II  Very rare do I find a game made for all platforms that I think has succeeded on the PC. I enjoyed Dead Space & Gears of War for the PC but I would've enjoyed them just the same if I had them for my PS3. I fear for the future of these types of games for the PC because even BIS has stated in one of their interviews that the console market is an area they have to look at for survival. Sad fact, but true from a business point of view. DR is another example of a poor quality title that is souless and are based on hype, eye candy (not that there was any in DR) and marketing. Thankfully ARMA II to is heavily moddable for long term use :bounce3:
-
Agreed, ARMA II is catching on and why stop the snowball effect. CM has marketed ARMA II in an unintentional way...BIS is now appreciated even that much more thanks to CM....lol. On an upwards with Operation Arrowhead!
-
^^ Yeah agreed, I equate that mission as a defibrillator that is trying to resuscitate something that has been declared clinically dead long ago.....I just read the forum thread over at CM about the LOD or the FOV for DR cannot be changed, I feel for the diehards that got this bad news. To anyone; I use to have a problems on occasion with ARMA II where the Razor Team's heads looked like mannequins and eventually the head details would draw in....anyone else seen that before? Is that a video card thing? I think it might of been fixed in the last patch but I haven't played much since. Could this be a similar problem like the headless thing?

Beating DR to the ground has reminded me of an episode from The Simpsons where Scratchy chops Itchy into chunks and the chunks come back as several little Itchys and then Scratchy chops all those little Itchys into a pulp and that pulp gets chopped so much that it becomes nothing but a pile of mush and then starts to steam...lol....when will the beating stop....LOL...I think DR has tapped out already.
-
I don't think they can salvage the mess that it is. CM has permanently damaged the respect I didn't even have with them in the first place...lol....Operation Flashpoint title stands with Cold War Crisis, Resistance and Bohemia and will ever remain. A most memorable game. Time to move on to ARMA II Operation Arrowhead. It's obvious the passion that people had for the original Operation Flashpoint. When I read posts about the anger on DR, those posts are definitely justified. CM lied, that simple. Yes I chose to buy it and I've accepted the money loss, but I still can't shake this feeling of being cheated. DR would literally have to be rebuilt from the ground up and it is obvious that CM never had the capability to rival the original. CM have fed a few egos to those that have become champions for a game that no where resembles what it was promised to be. How naive.

The DR AI isn't the only flaw and any correction to it will never get me to play it again. The PC version at release should of had those elements that you've done with your mod. I have DR for the PC and my biggest gripe is the fact it feels like a conosole game, period. We can discuss all the flaws of both games and the AI is often the easiest one to pick on since AI's are often the weakest link. That technology has a long way to go. I'll say this as a GAMER (and forget the technical lingo and splitting hairs), what matters is whether you are enjoying the end product. ARMA II has been evolving into something better since the original Operation Flashpoint days. I have been killed so many times and what I remember the most is where the AI has appeared or simulated something that resembles an intelligent decision. I don't give a s__t what the AI is doing under the hood, give me the experience and immersion. No doubt for me as a gamer, the BIS product has delivered on this front time and time again. The mods and the continual progress....don't get me started...LOL....Anyway, I think it's great for those that like DR, but for me, it's still an action, button mashing console game. As the words in the song by the Guess Who towards DR....."no time left for you, on to better days......"

AI's in computer games are just that, "Artificial Intelligence". I remember playing ARMA I with my brother and he kept complaining about the AI this and the AI that. His problem was that he couldn't handle the fact that he was made of minced meat half the time. I recall one occasion where he ran into a UAV and me and my buddy were hiding in the bush and warned him not to go. There was a BMP patrolling the area and you could tell that it was searching. Very plausible situation. Anyway, sure enough he was done the minute he got to the UAV. It was funny as hell to watch (because it happen to my complaining bro), but really, it was a believable situation. His first reaction was that the AI cheated. And our response was no, your s _ _t at this game. The point is, the AI on the ARMA series have their moments There is something about the challenge and unpredictability that makes the game engaging. I played DR for awhile, and not once have I experienced the same type of immersion, but more like the arcade FPS shoot em ups.

Interesting thread, I have a friend who is much older than me and he has an old original Tele that he could sell for a mint. Anyway, he is really good player and he has complained to me about alot of problems that are associated with a musical career. Ego is another problem. I love music and the Electric Guitar is such an amazing instrument. I do play for myself and my goals are purely enthusiast. The creative process is awesome and it is a therapy for me. I can spend hours on a fret board and don't care how much time goes by. That in itself is the reward for me. Good luck to all in there musical goals! Oh, btw nettrucker, I agree with you, music is not an age.

This is exactly why I prefer BIS and their software. I bought ARMA I & II and I knew what I was getting into. It is too bad the games aren't bug free on the initial release. This is an area that BIS needs improvement on, but no denying their commitment and involvement in the getting the software up to snuff. ARMA II ver 1.05 has addressed a lot of issues. CM have proved one thing, they are not cut out to make this kind of software. I was hoping for DR to be something special like the original. CM got my money on the marketing of DR and I did choose to buy it, sadly it was my mistake.

ArmA II beats COD MW2 for best FPS of 2009
Stryker_1 replied to walker's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Well said, FPS is used to often to easily lump it into one class. I hate when products are compared and they are not even the same demographics. Console games are different and PC (True, not cross platform, porting etc...) games are a dying breed. A Console game can be made to feel like a Console game on a PC. A PC game though cannot be made to feel like a PC game on a Console. Notable difference here. You know how many kids got Consoles/Games as an Xmas gift. What an easy purchase for a parent. PC hardware/games are not that simple of a purchase and nor a kid or parent is going to bother. These stats also cross markets. True PC and True Consoles (no porting) are different and should be measured different. These kind of numbers don't mean cr ap when it is not properly categorized. ARMA II is it's own class and DR from CM was suppose to be the ARMA II killer/equivalent and sequel to Operation Flashpoint, and it turned out to be an action rambo style shooter console game. -
lol, this is another reason (reasons for me are far too many)why DR & CM blundered huge on this. DR is a console FPS and that is it. The only justified comparison to ARMA II is the name Operation Flashpoint. CM's claim of being a sequel and failing on this front has lost their creditability. The one thing one cannot deny about ARMA II is that it keeps evolving long after the purchase. Hell, I still play ARMA I user content and I bought that 4+ years ago and have not spent another dime on it. This guys comment on finding a cracked copy pisses me off. These are the same weasels that criticize the most. ---------- Post added at 06:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:09 PM ---------- Awesome videos Zipper5. I've followed this post and was wondering whether you would back up your words. That you've done sir totally cool! Managing the AI enhances the game experience and when done correctly can be a lot of fun. The AI pathfinding for vehicles have been much improved since initial release. Accepting the imperfections of AI technology will help the experience. It's never been game breaking. Maybe some day a programming guru will develop and perfect the "Do What I Mean Key".... LOL

Certain games just don't play well on the console. I have a PS3 and I could never imagine playing an exact duplicate of ARMA II on that or even the Xbox 360. I have been spoiled with my PC Nostromo Gamepad and Mouse combo. Even with these two peripherals, I still need my Keyboard to play ARMA II. I'm not bashing consoles, but there is a notable difference between a true (not ported from a console) PC game versus a Console title. Sports title take the cake for the Console. Complex strategy games for the console, forget it.
-
I find the AI comparison interesting. Any PC game (or Console) AI is prone to non sensical behavior. DR has nothing notable here, it behaves like a typical action FPS. The AI in ARMA II is different somehow. It's not perfect and there are occasions where you think, hmmmm OK, that was f'd up. I have racked in lots of hours with ARMA II and there have been a lot of memorable moments where the AI has resembled something believable. AI programming has a long way to go. I've enjoyed the challenge that goes with ARMA II and when I get challenged, there is a sense of accomplishment. I found DR to be boring since I figured out the AI flaws pretty quick and I was then able to the run and gun and finish missions with ease. Anyway, these are computer games and I've always expect retarded behavior from the AI. The question is, does any of these games have their moments. ARMA II has had several for me.

Perhaps go over to Armaholic and try a user made campaign. I prefer single player myself. The only caveat is some of these campaigns require addons which can be a bit of a pain to manage, particularily when you get alot of them. They are worth it to me as the trade off is you get some real interesting stuff. I really enjoyed the user campaign made by Bardosy (Chesty Puller, No Addons Required) see link below. He put good humor into it. It doesn't have voice acting and there is some spelling issues etc.....but definitely alot of fun. http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7599
