Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.
Rainmanrainman replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Buy a single Crucial C300, read the reviews.:) I'm getting reads of 355 using my SATA3 port. The only difference I see in ArmA is in super fast loading. -
How do you know his i7 has 2.66 GHz? If it is 2.66 i7's have Turbo so should boost his GHz to around 3GHz. Unless of course he over-clocks, which I don't do as I have never felt the need. My CPU clocks, under turbo, to 3.33GHz so I really can't be bothered to mess about for the sake of 0.67 hz more!

Why are you getting out of PC gaming? I couldn't imagine getting out, I love seeing the development of hardware and software since playing OP flashpoint in 2001.

I have a GTX470 and its a very good card and will be even better with development of drivers. A lot of 'experts' slate this card but I just don't see the huge temps that they talk about or the noise, then again I don't stress test, just play games and this card works very well. I had a 260 before this card and the 470 blasts it, as it should, out the water. I would have been tempted by an ATI but with game developers using CUDA and Physics X I thought that I should stick with Nvidia. -

Advise, don't buy the OCZ SSD, look at this baby for the same price - 64GB Crucial C300 6GB/s. If you don't have sata 3 on your MB you can buy an addon card. -
British Troops DLC released & Official 1.01 Update
Rainmanrainman replied to Pauldarrington's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
The only problem I see here is that anyone playing as or controlling a squad of British troops has an unfair advantage over all other forces. This is due to the British army as being the best and most 'effiecient' combat solders in the world! I think £7.99 for the add-on is a no-brainer bargain!!!!!!!! :) Well done. -

Alienware Aura - £1149 Mr.PIG pc - £654 ( plus case etc) I'll sell you this pc for £654 a saving of £500. The only difference is that it won't have alienware on it. Dude - I did a quick search for parts and the build comes in at £654 and thats with the i7 930 not the older 860 . You could go possibly cheaper with more searching. With this theory in mind you can upgrade the GPU for somthing a little more modern, eg GTX 470 /480. You could also stretch to an SSD drive and a powerful PSU. Buying off the shelf comes with a premium! ( Alienware spec apart from cpu) i7 930 - £229 MB - £145 5670 - £69 x 2 4GB ram - £100 1TB hard drive, £40-50 -

What's the sign you play too much ArmA?

Hello. I read these forums quite a lot but have never had much to contribute and until now I haven't had a problem either, hoping someone can help! Today I inserted my disc as normal and it won't boot up. When I first installed I had the option of on-line activation (to play the game) or play from DVD. Is there anyway I can play the game without the DVD, eg use on-line activation when starting the game? I hope that this makes sense. I don't want to buy another copy!

It is a good edition, a great edition in fact! I loved the way I was sat prepared with all my driver disks and Nvidia drives ready to install from my USB stick. What happened, Windows 7 found all the 64 bit drivers for me and installed them!! How frigging excellent is that! I haven't had to install any drivers, cool. Not only does windows update check for it's own OS updates but checks for all other drivers too. This is just one thing however after tweeking, ( I have an SSD for the OS), I can boot to desktop in 30 secs, anyway, this is by the by as sleep mode works! Yes, sleep mode finally works. The system shuts down and just powers the memory, about 1.5 watt (a small bulb). This means a shake of the mouse and a desktop apears in 2 secs, literally. After coming from XP this is amazing.
-
Maybe the next generation ArmA will utilise 64 bit. I think with the Windows 7 release more people will choose to install 64 bit. Developers, game, need to realise this though.
-
I installed Windows 7 yesterday, I got it early, thanks PC World! Anyway my thoughts are. Why install 32 bit when most people have 64 bit capabilities? Win 7 installed a treat and found all the 64bit drivers needed automatically from Nvidia, Creative even for the Cannon printer, all 64bit drivers nicely installed. My system now recognises all my RAM. I upgraded from XP, I didn't go down the vista route. I used it at work and it was very annoying. Win 7 though is a revelation. Very smooth. The original question; does ArmA2 work with Win 7 64bit. Yes, it works a treat. I can't tell if it's any 'better' but it's no worse. I have always had a good experience with ArmA2 though. I have settings on high and the usual 'post process' off. My rig isn't anything super but it runs this game a treat. Begs the reason for anything other than a dual core for gaming, but that's another topic...... On a side: I get a WIn 7 experiance score of 6.4 which pretty good. Processor - Core 2 E6850 3 GHz running at 3.4 GHz - 6.4 Memory - OCZ 4 GB- 6.4 Graphics - 7.2 Gaming graphics - GTX 260- 7.2 Primary hard drive - 7.3 The Win 7 experience is given at the lowest score not the average, not sure why. The score max is 7.9. The hard drive is a Samsung SSD which I'm only running the OS on. I don't see the point in putting games on it unless you want to see shorter load ups. Windows boots to desktop in 38 secs and shut-down is around 8 secs. Should you buy Windows 7, yes. ArmA2 runs well with no problems. Put it on an SSD even if it's the only upgrade you do this year! Oh, and if your processor supports it, use 64 bit!

Yes indeed! Win 7 is out next week and I shall hopefully get my copy. I'm going to put the 64 bit version on an ssd and see how ArmA2 runs. I can't believe that there will be any benefits, but i don't mind as the game runs great for me. -
I too have an E6850. What are you running this at? I have taken it to 3.4GHz with a zalman fan. The temps are cool and I could go more but things are very smooth in ArmA2. I have high settings and AA on. I also have a GTX 260 which help things too. Reinstall the game, play in editor and play MP, hours of fun. I didn't buy the game for single player, I've been into it once but not bothered to play it. This game, for me is all about the MP!

Rainmanrainman replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Is quad core really worth investing in? I run an E6850 clocked to 3.4GHz and I have ArmA2 running beautifully. I cannot see what a quad would do for me? I also have a GTX 260 and 4GB ram. The next upgrade is Win7 64 on an SSD which I already have, just waiting for Win7 to drop through the post. I have pondered about a quad core, maybe a E9550, but cannot see what difference to gaming this will bring. I have noticed on a lot of games now there's a logo, 'runs great on i7', like DR, don't ask, i cant believe I bought this game, anyway. DR runs on high using a core duo, no probs as does ArmA2. Are we just being led to believe that we simply must have the latest processor when really we don't. I think a quad core maybe necessary in a few years, and although game developers might want you to believe that their game runs great on i7, in my experience games run great on a core duo, just turn up the Hz! -
We all need a first post. Post 2: After reading the BI forum for a few years nothing has made me bothered enough to register until i bought DR. After trying to play DR for a second time has made me dislike it even more. For e.g. In A2, I see an AI flanking me, I take aim, I shoot, he dies. In DR, I see and AI flanking me, I take aim, I shoot, he carries on flanking, I shoot him again, blood splats, he continues to flank me, I SHOOT, blood, I SHOOT x3, and again.........He then shoots me and I die. WTF? This was played in hardcore mode too. A2 and DR cannot be compared. One is an emersive game, the other not so. DR is ok for console people but it cannot pretend to be on a par with ArmA2. I'm disappointed, I thought DR would be as good as the original which I enjoyed very much. Oh well.
