High Command Commander / Subordinate problems.
catintheengine replied to BeerHunter's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Thanks froggyluv. So, in HC, it's more like a RTS? So do you control it down to the fire team size unit, or only the squads? -

Ok, I've got a completely foolish question: What exactly is the High Command module? What does it do? I don't have the game yet, but I keep hearing this term thrown around. I tried to google it, but nothing really came up. And as a side note: What's the difference between machinegunner and automatic rifleman? -

Ok guys, I've run into a conundrum. I jumped onto ebay to get an idea as to what I'd be paying for some of these parts and I found a few people selling full computers for (relatively) cheap. So now I'm not sure if I should spend more money on building my own or just buy a full system off of someone on ebay. I would only buy from a reputable seller with a high score and that would leave me with more money to spend on a better case and better keyboard/mouse/headset. My girlfriend made an astute observation as well - I'm not the world's most patient person. Also, with how much money I'm going to be making at my new job vs. how much I pay in bills, it would take me a LONG time to save up the money to buy the parts that I'll need to build my own, which would be around $800. Two notes about this: - A lot of the systems I saw had fairly low specs but I thought I saw a few that looked pretty equal to the one I was/am going to build. - I've never used ebay. I know that means I'm living in the stone age, but is it safe to be buying something like this on there? Thanks much guys. -

Naming AI Allies

Thank you. I was just looking for it and I couldn't find it, so I'm glad you posted that link. :) -
So, this might be a goofy question, but I figure that there's no harm in asking. Is there any way to assign a name onto an AI ally for custom missions? I guess that the best example of what I'm talking about is when in the CoD games (I know it's not popular around here, but for the purposes of what I'm talking about it's the best example) you look at an ally and their name pops up. The reason I want to do this is, if I were to make a few missions, I'd like to give them somewhat of a more cinematic feel and let the player know exactly who they're looking at, beyond just being assigned a number. Additionally, is there any way to script a script into the game. I guess that I could set up triggers so that when certain things happen, something is said by a squad mate, but are there any other ways to set that up?

Ok, so, basically if I wanted to go with a cube case, I'd just need to find a micro version of that motherboard? Also, does it matter what brand of CD/DVD drive I choose, and what all am I still missing as far as hardware goes. The only thing I can think of is a sound card. -

Thanks. I was just looking at newegg.com and I saw a drop down menu with Power Supply on it and I was like "Wait a second....Power Supply...PS in the PSU. Oh, ok, I get it!" Is there a certain kind of power supply that I need to be looking for? -

I feel like I'm learning more every time I check back here :p I'm glad to see the motherboard that you recommend is cheaper. Cheaper = getting the game faster, for me. Ok, so this is embarassing but: what is a PSU? Also, I wasn't planning on picking out a case until I started to buy up the internal parts, though earlier I did take a look at some cool cases just for kicks. Would you guys recommend I start to narrow down the cases now, or is it too soon? Again, thank you everyone. I really do feel like I'm learning a bit more each time I come back to this thread. Additional question: What is the difference between DDR2 and DDR3? All my brother can tell me is that DDR3 is new and supposed to be pretty awesome. -

Thanks Raver! I'm glad to have a solid break-down of everything I'll need. I'm not sure how great the airflow in our old case is, so I'll have to double-check, but if I'm going to be saving up for $950 worth of internal hard drive, then shelling out an extra $100 for a case that's going to keep it safe would be a wise investment. BTW, I checked out your rig - you've got the hook-up! -

Ok, so now I'm starting to feel like a real tool. You guys have been so helpful and I keep asking questions. Can someone explain to me in simple terms what a lot of these terms mean? A friend directed me to dell.com to check out their computers and I found one that has: - Intel® Core™ i7-920 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz) Now, I've heard somewhere that i7 was a really powerful processor, but I've seen other computers that have a higher GHz. Honestly, I have no idea what any of this stuff means. - 4GB6 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM5 at 1066MHz - 4 DIMMs My brother keeps telling me that DDR3 is really good, so I figure this has to be a good spec. - 640GB 7200 RPM8 SATA Hard Drive - nVidia GeForce GT 220, 1024MB I guess this is the one that's got me really nervous. I'm really attracted to this piece of hardware because it's actually less than a grand and every cent counts. Again, if someone would be so kind as to explain what a lot of these terms mean, I'd really appreciate it and I wouldn't have to keep bothering you guys. -

Ok, I hate to bother you guys any more about any of this, but I have come up with another question. This one is about controlling the game. I know a lot of people prefer a mouse and keyboard set-up to a gaming controller, but hear me out. Is it possible to set-up the game so that I use mouse and keyboard when on foot, but once I enter a vehicle, I'm using an Xbox 360 controller? Additionally, if I was to do that, does the Xbox 360 microphone headset work with the game? Again, I really do appreciate your answers. You guys have been a big help to me and hopefully I'll see you guys (soon) on the battlefield. -

Thanks everyone for all of your help! I'm going to try to get ahold of some people I know who are knowledgeable on building computers and see if maybe they could help me figure out which way would be wiser for me to go (building or buying) and if nothing else, it's only about $1,100 to buy a pretty good computer. -

The US. What does it mean if a card is SLI? Would it be more cost effective to just buy the parts to upgrade an older computer? We have an older tower that we don't use anymore so I'm wondering if I'd just end up spending a lot of money on a tower that's going to be OK, when I could spend less money to get it up to the same level or better. Ok, so I'm looking at saving up for a computer and I wanted to make sure that it could play ArmA 2. Unfortunately, I'm not very tech savvy. I asked my brother (who's a bit more tech savvy than I am) and he said that it should, but I wanted to get another opinion. HP Firebird 802: - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9400 - 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM - 500GB Serial ATA hard drive capacity - Dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800S SLI graphics cards Now, I don't know what all of those numbers mean so I'm pretty much in the dark. I posted the information that seemed pertinent. I'm looking to run it on pretty high settings but if I can't run it at the top settings for graphics/shadows/water/etc. I won't be heartbroken. This computer costs about a grand and I'm really not looking to spend any more money than that, considering I'm going to have to save for a while to even get that, so I'm fearful that if that won't run it, then I probably won't be able to get the game. -

Ok, so I've tried looking around these forums a bit and on the web and I simply cannot find the answer to my question. While I haven't played the game, I plan on getting it, and the mission editor is one of the things I'm most excited about. Is it possible to create a co-op mission for 1 - 5 players that also has friendly AI units? For example, I want to set up a scenario where it's 40 friendly units, five of which are player controlled vs. 100 enemy AI. I ask because I was hoping to be able to set up a few missions for some friends of mine and myself where we had AI controlled allies. Thanks in advance for your help! -

So, something along the lines of: - Set the squad to go on a way point line that will enter into a trigger box. - Once the AI character enters the trigger box, have it drop his health to zero and also have it trigger a sound effect of a gunshot. Would that work, or am I missing anything? -

I do have another question: Is it possible to script that a specific AI character be killed at a certain time/once they enter a certain area? Let me clarify: If I wanted it be a moment of calm and then all of a sudden have AI Character #5 be sniped, is that possible via scripting? -
