    Import existing topography?

poking around I found a open source set of tools at http://www.vterrain.org/. no idea if they are good but the site certainly provides lots of info and free software. I am trying to work backwards from V3 using tutorials to figure out what V3 needs to create a terrain and then figuring out how to turn available real world data into V3 usable files

    Import existing topography?

@spirit. Thanks for the quick response. there are tons of downloadable high res Gettysburg maps on the web (Library of Congress is one place) and there appear to be free tools on the web that permit creation of 3d maps from historical maps (check out ). Is something like this going to be importable into BI's editor and, if so, is this a good way to go?

    Import existing topography?

@Vandrel: Just so I make sure I understand this: it is possible to download elevation and terrain data directly into the BIS editor? Is it necessary to use Global Mapper ($350) for this? Can I use USGS data? I would love to be able to create a map of Gettysburg 1863.
  4. @Charon Productions: your download limit at rapidshare has been reached. can you post here or Armaholic?

    Moveable Target Range

This is a terrific intro to the game, but a noobie like me does not know how to use scripts and I have been unable to find an elementary intro. Let me give you an idea of how basic my needs are: when I load targetrange into the editor and try to add additional targets, I would like to have multiple targets doing different things - different distances, movements, speeds, times of appearance, etc, just like the firing range that appears in the armory (but with all the benefits of your virtual target range - variable locations, realign with player, any kind of unit, all weapons, etc). I have tried all sorts of variations - scripts in the player's initialization, scripts in each individual target's initializiation, scripts in both. I can get multiple targets in preview but inevitably only one moves. I need really basic help - what are the scripts that will enable multiple targets to move independently at various distances? I do not understand the "nul=" script - I see how to get multiple targets at the same distance moving in the same way, but how about multiple targets at different distances (and even ones that appear at different times)? I know this is really basic but I am a really basic guy (who hopes to graduate to 2d grade). Example so you can see what I have tried. In the player's initialization: nul=[[t1],"run:LIMITED","move:20","defdist:100] execVM "targetrange.sqf";nul=[[t2],"run:"LIMITED","move:20","defdist:150" execVM "targetrange.sqf" I have tried all kinds of variations on this syntax (variations on the brackets; putting the t2 stuff inside the first parentheses; putting the scripts in the target initializations instead of the player's; putting scripts in both the target and player initializations). Please help.
  7. I've seen this suggestion a bunch of places on the BI forums but do not understand it. is the idea to rename arma2.exe to crysis64.exe (and presumably change the shortcut accordingly)? why would this have any effect?
  8. thanks. I'm on my way ---------- Post added at 10:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 PM ---------- Fabulous! significant improvement in FPS with low visual vegetation without any decrease in quality of experience. Now if I can just find someone who has figured out how to reduce the grossly overstated effect of brighter light - in forest, if even a slight bit of sky becomes visible, the light dims so much in the the rest of the scene that it becomes very hard to see anything. this happens even with post-processing set on low (and kegytes says his blur and bloom tools are no longer necessary in 1.03). please excuse me if this comment violates some posting protocol - I would gladly post it in the appropriate thread if I could find one.
  9. my moniker tells it all and I am not embarrassed to appear (prove?) I'm an idiot: what folders do the pbos go in and how are they invoked?

    Test your sniper recruits!

is it possible to use this single player (AI controlling the non-recruits?)
  11. great mission. not too easy for noobies (on veteran). However, ability to save only once (with no possibility of overwriting previous save) is a killer. can you change that?

need a gameplay thread to help noobies

Thanks. wiki is very helpful. couple Qs: (1) how much of Arma tips/tricks are still relevant? (2) has anyone or is anyone likely to create scenarios specifically designed for training purposes? Alternatively, is the mission editor simple enough for someone who has never used one to create training scenarios?
  13. I have been looking for a realistic and fun military sim for years. Arma 2 with all its need for coding improvements is it. There should be a thread for noobies. My own description: long-time player of PC games (remember Zork?), played the new games when they came out (love Fallout 3) but nothing before Arma 2 was realistic military including graphics (maybe Arma was but I did not know about it). I have no military experience, never played Arma 1. Would really like to work my into being able to play Arma 2 effectively. Have found nothing online to help someone just starting with Arma 2. A thread where noobies like me could have basic gameplay questions answered by experienced players would be great. I mean really basic. Here's mine: HOW DO YOU SEE ENEMIES BEFORE THEY KILL YOU?! I figure the Armory is the best place to get training. In any challenge where the bad guys shoot back, I am having a terrible time seeing them before getting shot (graphics settings are across-the-board high, distance setting is 3000, difficulty is regular). Why am I having such a hard time seeing the enemy? I do not just charge in to every position; even using stationary weapon defending a position, I never see the bad guys before they see me. Is this a graphics issue? Am I an idiot (the two possibilities are obviously not mutually exclusive)? Please: HOW DO I SEE THE ENEMY
