  1. the engine maps the memory as it sees fit,

and the engine easily maps more than 1GB

that was possible even before LAA with -maxmem=2047

memory mapped for file cache You don't see that's done by operating system

    read for more details http://www.bistudio.com/developers-blog/breaking-the-32-bit-barrier-2_en.html

for multicore , please read :

    http://www.bistudio.com/developers-blog/real-virtuality-going-multicore_en.html

since then more threads were added aka exThreads

    http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters#exThreads

here is nice table where you can see how game scales with CPUs

    http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1697744&postcount=19

yet You can await further improvements in this area ...

DX11 and OpenCL as future is still onhold

DX11 is around 6% of gaming machines on STEAM

while with rest of world it's way worse

    http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

OpenCL ready is even fraction of these numbers ...

GPU stress well we use whole system not just card so that's why good machine counts ...

Thank you very much for your time. I will check everything.

  2. It uses 4Gb+ on my rig...

Tested on 2 machines, same clock speed, on is quad, one is dual. I have seen the game using all 4 cores on the quad (with a peek on the first 2 though), and both cores on the dual

    (i have 1.07 patch)

    No, it is not...Really

    You obviously don't know enough..

Why? Because and OpenCL product can run on any OS system, not only M$?

I dont want to argue m8, but can u pls take a SH of task manager showing proceses. Becouse on my system with 4GB of ram u it does not use more than 1GB. How much ram do you have?

There is difference 2vs4 core, but not much difference on 4+.

  3. erm ...

are You aware the engine is already able use 4GB directly (LAA on 64bit OS) and N GBs via file cache (see the blog)?

are You aware You can use -cpuCount to support N cores ?

DX11 is way too limited spread and OpenCL ready drivers same ...

Are you aware that engine isnt using more than 1GB of ram?

Are you aware the game does not properly use all cpu cores (i mean there is benefit but not huge one, and there are people with gulftowns and x6 phenoms here, no difference for them on 4+cores), and as far as i know 8 cores is maximum.

(i have 1.07 patch, and i read the blog)

    I am talking about future.

DX 11 is future. I know it will be huge learning curve to use OpenCL, but u realy need to.

Im shure you know your market, but if you do that, imagine people just need to buy better video card to run game better, not whole pack, like now.

And, im engineer (electronic systems and tech), on a way on geting master of science degree, and im very interesting in weapon systems (2nd generation anti aircraft).

  4. Well i dont realy care.

But all i want is to use all resorces we have.

Make it x64 only, so it can use huge ammounts of RAM, not like 1GB it uses now.

-develop it to use more than 8GB of ram.

Make use of multicore, it is obvious that multicore is Future. Design the engine to use 16 core cpus and more.

-When developing, use opterons, they have 12 core, i think even 16core is coming out soon to test it.

Try to use dx11 for calculating physics, and AI. It is allot cheaper even to buy most expensive gpu, than to upgreade all. And this game doesnt use gpus to their full potential.

I just hate the fact that even if i get the most expensive components (cpu, gpu ram), overclock them and still i will have low fps at some parts of game, not becouse limitations of components, but becouse game engine doesnt us it to their full potential.

  5. Sure you will get higher FPS but depending on the scenario ie. in towns your framerate will drop to 20fps. I went from Core2Duo 3.8ghz to Core2Quad 4.5ghz (For stability I lowered to 4.3ghz) and still I'm experiencing framerates below 25 in towns. GPU usage is somewhere around 20-30%.

I think we will need to wait for atleast 1 more generation of CPUs/GPUs to play this game at more than 30fps in big fights and cities.

I am huge fan of series and i play arma2 but i just dont understand how it works.

All the time i thought game was cpu bound, and when i run this game with same video settings (arrowhead demo benchmark), i get same fps at 3 and 3.6GHz wit q6600.

38fps with 1600VD 100% 1680, everything very high exept postprocesing(disabled, i dont like it), and antialiasing on high.

I get even 60 fps on some places, 41 with same settings in benchmark 1 in arma2.

But what i realy hate is performance in big cities, damn fps drop to 20. Using deduction one would say it gpu bottlenecks there, but no. Even if i drop everything to very low, it doesnt change more than 1-2 fps. And that is beyond logic, waching task manager rearly shows spikes to even 70% of cpu usage.

Point is, even if i sell my pc and i pay 1000$ more, i dont belive i can play and run warfare, or play in elektrozavodsk with no sub 30fps.

    My system

    q6600 go @3.6 (9x400) 4GB ddr2 pc 6400 , ati 4850 volt moded, and clocked

  6. For all those billionares playing Arma2-OA:

MOBO: EVGA Classified Super Record 2 (SR-2) 600€

    GPU: 3x GeForce GTX 480, 1536MB GDDR5 3x460€=1380€

    PROCS: 2x Intel® Xeon® Processor X5680 2x1600=3200€

    MEM: G.Skill’s DDR3 48GB (4GBx12) 1,900MHz CL8 Ripjaws 2900€

    PSU: SilverStone Strider ST1500 1500W 330€

    CASE: LIAN-LI ARMORSUIT PC-P80 FULL TOWER 300€

    SSD: Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB SATA3 RAID-0 2x600€=1200€

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    =9910€

Oh... and if you can spare some more:

    OCZ Z-Drive R2 e88 9600€

    as dedicated Arma2 drive.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    =19510€

And add a decent water cooling.

Maybe you could play Arma2 with this comp on medium settings.

I think PSU cant handle this.

    And add phase cooling :)

  7. Is there any system that can run this game without framedrops to sub 30?

    In benchmark2 or in elektrozavodsk.

Do you think next gen cpus/gpus can run this game at vsinc?

I think for 2 more generations of cpus and gpus, and then maybe....

I have q6600@3.6 and ati 4850 (volt moded and overclocked), and still at some times i get sub 20 fps ŽŽ(no matter the video setings@ 100% 1680*1050).

I just want to play warfare hosting it from my PC and with min fps of 30 (biggest firefights, latter in the game).

  8. I have to agree.

Certain programs require the paging file.

As far as i know, and i have BC. sc. in electrical engineering and IT (but i am not programmer, still i passed alot of computer languages...c/c++ ARM 7 assembly VHDL, matlab and others...).

As programmer of windows apps u dont have acesss to RAM (physical).

U have access to virtual memmory, only windows have access to real ram adresses, so windows will at any moment in time determine how much space in real adresses they will allocate, and how much they will put in HD.

As far as i know when u program in any programing language win app u start your code from 0 adress space, and it is not real zero in physical ram (for any program or sub program), and then windows will put it at real physical memory adress that is free and that they see fit at the any point in time, or in PF.

I dont think you can chose to order windows where you will put your data (i mean order them to prefer RAM or PF).

For example, it is easy in c to use pointers and mess with adress space, and every n00b programer could crash windows, by adressing and using real RAM space where OS kernel IS.

Example: part of windows KERNEL code is on adress FFFAA1111, and n00b writes pointer in win app that meses with that adress. OS programers are not idiots, so they writed the kernel and memmory management, and u DONT have access to real adress space, becouse you could crash windows.

Maybe im wrong, but that is what i learned and i was told, and once again im not programmer

  9. M8 you have 3 year old CPU, that even when you bouth it, wasnt realy high end.

My friend on athlon x4 and 5870 has 14 (1680@100%).

U want better performance regarding minimum fps? Buy i7 and clock it as far as it goes, as with your video card, u can max most of video settings and it will work just us it works with your setings.

Benchmark2 is stress test, there realy aint pcs that can get even 30fps on that test.

  10. Maybe benchmark was the wrong thing to call them but maybe stress test ? People looking at these shockingly low figures on moderately high end systems are going to be so put off.

Not sure why the 2nd bend was that much worse in performance for all, should I be getting 15fps on my low end system ? What did BIS get when they ran it and what settings as a 'goal' ?

I would call it stress test, rather than benchark...

M8 your system isnt low end, i think it is a mid range system.

Clanmate has same cpu + 5870 and gets 14 fps, in second test.

This second test realy points that minimum fps in arma2 is cpu related.

    1680x1050/1680x1050

    View Distance = 1600

    Textures = Very High

    Video Memory = Very High

    Anistronopic Filter = Normal

    Anti-Aliasing = OFF

    Terrain Detail = Very High

    Objects Detail = Very High

    Shadows = Normsl

    Post Processing =OFF

    B1 34fps

    B2 13fps

    E6600@3400 MHz 4GB Ddr2 800, 4850

You realy need i7 @ 4.2+ Ghz to play arma2 in big cities and hughe battles without laging. Sadly that is the fact. I think we will need 2 generations of cpus after i7 to play it at vsinc. Just like OF, or FSX (there is no system today that can run it at 30fps+ on large airports, with everything maxed, and it is 2006 game).

But this is greatest game there is and runs good most of the time even at my 2006 mid range PC. :)

  11. To be fair, he's reviewing a gfx card, not Arma2. Many people know of Arma2 as a hugely performance hungry game, so they test hardware performance with it. You can't expect everyone to know all the tweaks.

But what is point of reviewing the vidiocard using a game test unless u write with what setings and where (meaning, what demo u used, or test) u used.

    Bit offtopic...

There is no pint of testing video card such as that at resolution such as 1280, that implys he doesnt know anything about how games work or perform. As there is corelation between video resolution, cpu usage and gpu usage. Meaning that it is pointless testing GPU at low resolutions (CPU bottleneck), or CPU at high resolutions (GPU bottleneck).

    He doesnt know basics.

  12. Only because the slider can be pushed up to 10'000 meters it doesn't mean you have to. Actually there is no CPU around (be it Intel or AMD) which could handle this and viewdistance is CPU related, not GPU.

With max quality settings you can play smotthly with up to 4000m which is IMHO more than enough.

Maybe CPU's Post-PhenomII/I7 are able to handle 10'000 meters.

M8 you are totaly right, i dont think there is even a point in more than 4000m, and no cpu today can play fixed 60fps, with this setings...

Maybe gulftown (6 core 32nm nehalem)...

  13. I am looking for a new computer right now and I need your help!

Would you recommend me an OC processor?

Is an OC processor worth the money (extra cooling etc.) and worth the extra noise it makes?

    System 1:

    GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD6 P55 LGA 1156

    - INTEL Core i7 860 @ 4.0 GHz

    - Prolimatech Megahalems Cooler

    - 4096MB DDR3-1600 Samsung selected

    - 4096MB DDR3-1600 Samsung selected

    - Samsung 22x+/-RW schwarz SATA

    - 128GB Samsung SSD MLC

    - 1.0TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3

    - 1024MB XFX ATI HD 5870 GDDR5

    - SB Creative X-Fi extreme Audio PCI-e

    - Coolermaster HAF 932 Black Tower

    - be quiet! Sys-Power 700W 80Plus

    - MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

    System 2:

    ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 X58 LGA 1366

    - INTEL Core i7 950 4x 3.06GHz 8MB

    - Intel Original-Kühler LGA 1366

    - 6144MB DDR3-1600 Samsung selected

    - 6144MB DDR3-1600 Samsung selected

    - Samsung 22x+/-RW schwarz SATA

    - 1.0TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3

    - 128GB Samsung SSD MLC

    - 1024MB XFX ATI HD 5870 GDDR5

    - SB Creative X-Fi extreme Audio PCI-e

    - Coolermaster HAF 932 Black Tower

    - be quiet! Sys-Power 700W 80Plus

    - MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Both systems cost about the same (2000€.)

Should I go for the OC with less RAM?

Or for the i7 950 4x 3.06GHz with 12 MB (thinking RAM disk here)

Liquid i7 920 @ 4,0 with 12 GB RAM is an alternative but it costs 600€ more and I do not know if it is worth it??

P.S. I do not have the knowledge and time to assemble a system myself so that is not an alternative.

    Well 2nd is better.

    But...

Dont buy i7950, rather buy i7920 and decent air cooler, like noctua, or megahalem u mentioned...

In second confo u can set up ramdrive to put all the game in it and run it perfectly.

    Go 12GB

If u realy cant change the system 2, buy it and then buy just some decent air cooler, (like 50$ more).

    :)

  14. the 8x PCI-E is no issue at all. you wont use all the bandwidth with one card EVER. As for 200Fill... thats kinda wack unless it is setting it at 1900/1200, If you think you can run A2 @ higher than that with "max settings" and 60fps steady it isnt going to happen. Or you VD needs to be 700m AND still in citys you will lagg. I have 4870X2s One is = to a 5870~ So i have basicly two 5870s...

I know for a fact you will never get good frames with VD over 3000m And 3D res at 2048/1536 and max setting on the rest. Soo i bet your 3D/fill is over 2048/1536....

I run 100% and use "normal AA" (4Xaa) with 16X AF in the CCC, 1940/1400, and 2048/1536, 20fps to 90fps(i use a 21inCRT) in game and smooth 50s~ in the big citys when playing the in game SP.

I do use 200%fill then its with AA off, and when your in the 4000/3000 rez... its kinda slow.. duh! ( also hint, any VD over 4000m,3600m~ will set your terrain detail to normal)

    i7@4.1 , 6Gb 1500 , 2X 4870X2

Well, meybe your 2x 4870x2 are faster than his 5870 in crysis or some other multi gpu optimized game, but im damn shure his single 5870 is faster than all yours in arma2.

  15. Point is, if u have i7 1366 u can buy 6x2GB for 240$ and 12 GB is more than enough for whole ARMA2 in ram (and that is for people who are buying whole new system).

And most people who have i7 1366 already have some RAM instaled so they need invest, like 100$ to fill al their slots up.

This realy isnt so expensive as you might tihink in first place.

And u can use it for more aplications than just arma2.

  16. You are right, it needs to be unbuffered.

Well it is a shame that unregistered costs more than registered (registered should be more expensive becouse it has buffer).

I was courious and downloaded w3520 xeon and i7 920 datashet, and i was suprised it only supports unbuffered ecc /non ecc.

Only diference should IMHO be that register that delayes 1 cycle, and that is extra component, so i just dont get why it costs more (i guess becouse low demand, and higher probability of error becouse higher density).

  17. Hi Iena,

    here's the HD Tune result:

    6yfl6o.jpg

By no means is it useless to buy SSDs - you will be surprised how much they will speed up your system in general, and it certainly helps for ARMA2 compared to a standard mechanical hard disk. However, as you can see above, that's still a different animal compared to RAMdisk speeds.

    :eek::)

That was my idea, few months ago. Finaly someone done that, and prove i had pint:yay:

But point isnt 5GB/s transfer of big files. It is IOPS and random disk iops.

You can raid 24 SSD but you wil never get IOPS of ramdrive, and that is what makes biggest performance impact.

    --------------------------------------------

Anyway why turn off your PC anyway???

I use sleep, i have genuine windows 7 profesional x64 (from MSDNAA) and i rearly restart or turn off my pc. Even then u can with some programs create images of ramdisk, and make automaticaly saving images when you turn off your pc.

Ramdisk is amazing, not only for gaming but for IT professionals (databases), photo and video editing. Enginering and and science (im engineering student and use matlab, and circut/network design software).

And ram is so cheap. U can get 1x4GB ddr3 1333 for 120$.

    http://www.pricewatch.com/browse/system_memory/ddr3-1333_4gb

for 480$ u can get 16GB of ram, and that is enough for most programs and games, and for that money u cant get 2 good SSDs.
