    Afghan War Diary - wikileaks

I went and edited TV-PressPass' original mission. The friendly mortar now works, and I gave the player 4 salvos of 4 rounds each. Simply point your cursor where you want the rounds to land, and call radio Alpha (0-0-1). It may or may not require CO. If it's ok with him, I should have the DL up shortly. Once I can find the mission file...

    Arma 2 - Female Characters?

There are different reasons why the US military does not assign female soldiers (or airmen, or sailors, or Marines) to frontline combat roles. Are there exceptions? Yes. Just because you're supply, doesn't mean you won't get attacked by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reason as to why there are no female soldier models in Arma 2 may be related to work load (2+ times for models/voices/animation, just for female soldiers), or it may be related to BI believing a reason as to why they shouldn't. And to those members of the female gender, saying that you are being mistreated by not being "represented" in the content of the game, is just as bad as the male idiots spouting off sexist BS. If there was an amazing game out, and the only characters I could play were women, without the choice for playing as a male, it wouldn't stop me from playing that game. And my 2 cents on the issue at hand: Women; due to American societal norms, hormones, and other things; have a different mental mindset from a man. In frontline combat, commanders are sometimes reliant on the hormone-fueled "You, go over there and do something that may kill you!" "YES SIR!" mentality most often found in men ages 18-26. Have someone who may question that, have that spread, and the mission wouldn't get done, and people would die. Plus, there's still holdovers from ye olde thinking of keeping the women "safe" while the "Men" go out to do the "dirty" work. If you're still perturbed by the lack of female soldier models in the game, instead of whining about it, go get your hands "dirty" and create some yourself. Do a good enough job of it and others will praise you to no end.
  3. ...And no, not using ACM, SECOPS, or something like Flashpoint:Takistan. I'm talking about having a mission with the whole map filled, units patrolling, going places, feeling like they are actually doing things. Then, take the player and drop them somewhere in the middle to just roam. If you remember the game Mercenaries for the consoles, something like that. I've tried my hand at it, and all I got was merging some of the campaign and scenario missions into one, then adding bits here and there. But, my imagination is limited. What I'm thinking, is of asking YOU to take an area of Takistan, and go hog wild on it. Set up a small outpost, have US forces patrolling, Taki Insurgents waiting to spring traps and IEDs, whatever. Then, take everything that people have done, and merge it all into one big conglomeration. This can then be used later as maybe a basis for missions where you want an ambient force already in place. All I ask, is that you either keep it to editor only, or simple scripts that can be easily merged with other scripts. Overlap is fine. It creates those unexpected little conflicts. Is anyone willing to help?
  4. First, did you know that you can click and drag the little green marker when you edit a secops mission? Wherever you move it is where you will insert via the Huey. And, on some of the downloadable maps, like Podagorsk, you have to be picky of where you place that marker. Because if you aren't, the heli is likely to crash into a tree before it lets you out.
  5. Just be aware of where you move the insert marker to. Some maps, like Podagorsk, are not heli-friendly at all.

    ArmA 2 Key

What are you trying to do, anyways? As far as I know, any version of Arma will work with another. If you have it installed already, and he does too, just get playing. This just sounds too much to me like you don't have a legal copy of the game.

    ArmA 2 Key

If he bought a DVD version, he should have a key. Use that. Your key won't work, as it's "keyed" to only your copy.
  8. It looks excellent so far! Just a few editing nitpicks... A: You only need to use 1 "First Aid: Simulation" and 1 "Battlefield Clearance" module for everybody. B: You don't need to sync each module to each unit. You can just sync to 1 person per group. Ideally the group leader. (But, you may need it for an MP game with players not in those slots. Though I have no ability to test this on my own.) C: In your init.sqf, you're ID'ing groups that, to me, don't exist. Why not just ID them in-game? "this setGroupID ["Group"]" D: You have a few mistakes you glazed over in the briefing and map markers. "Escape to theGas Station" and the M1A1 markers need to be T-90. But why did you use NAPA? Why not the Chedaki? And setting pilots to be your demolitions guys instead of engineers.

    APC support in Razor Two

That's Manhattan. I think it's referring to the end of the mission, and the APC there. PC: Go figure that I just remember that I'm about 5-6 pages back. I'm still curious if there is an APC you can drive in Razor Two.

    Bullet velocity - inaccurate ?

And remember that the speed of bullets in Arma2 is decided not by the gun, but by the magazine. This means, that despite the M16 having a higher initial velocity in real life, in-game it fires at the same speed as every other weapon that uses the same magazine. M4, XM8, even the SAW (which can take STANAG mags). ACE2 fixes this, BTW. It's changed so that there's a value in the weapon's config which modifies the magazine velocity.

ARMA 2 vs. Modern warfare 2.

It's more like the difference is between an airplane and a space ship. While the airplane has to look sleek and sexy to fly, the spaceship is much more advanced. The latter doesn't have to look the part, as it's already got everything else going for it. They look the same (military shooter), but handle completely different from each other (fast-paced shoot-em-up vs slow-paced tactical shooter). I don't expect MW2 to last as long as Arma2, much less past the next big-name game (crysis 2? Halo: Reach?). And really, asking whether one is better than the other on the web forums of one of the games? How is this conducive of getting a non-biased opinion on the two? It's like asking EvE vs WoW on the EvE forums. Except there, you'll get flamed to death just mentioning WoW.

Do cannon shells bounce in real life?

Edit: Max got it. He knows more than I do. The one in the video belongs (I think) to the Japanese (G-something) Self Defense Force.

    Helicopter gunner won't fire missiles?

With ACE2 (ACE is for Arma1), you need to bind two new keys on the option menu for "Gunner Switch Weapons" and "Gunner Fire Weapons". In regular Arma, they switch back to just standard "Switch Weapons" and "Fire". As well, any rockets (FFARs, or their Russian equivalent) are directly controlled by the pilot's fire button (normally left-click on mouse) like the UH-1Y in vanilla Arma2.

    FDF Podagorsk

    2) Tt's not a heliport, as far as I can figure, but a tank base. There is a separate base or two somewhere that I saw (there's so many scattered about...) that has a few heli pads available. 4) Apparently, that was intentional. And amazing map! Seriously! This and Namalsk (once it's finished) are probably the two best maps out there. My only gripe - Is there a chance that you can use the same ground texture/what ever that is used by BIS on the big airfield for your airport? The current materials make the plane bounce around so much that it doesn't seem like you're taxing on pavement. And can you get a proper ILS/Landing light set up? With the whole runway marked instead of the two little strips there now. And using the PAPIs correctly, and all the lights...But I'm just nitpicking because nobody I've seen so far (besides BIS, kinda) has set up their runways correctly yet, and it'd be a huge advantage to show that you have it right.
  15. Is there a possibility that in larger areas that don't change much in elevation (basically a difference of 10-20' within a 200m radius) can you actually have some of the rocks removed? I know you're after the infantry combat, but try focusing more on concealment and not cover. Even with the updated map using less rocks, vehicles still have to wind their way between them or risk getting stuck. This completely removes that option for mission makers. More trees, some field grass (the stuff that grows up to your waist) and a few large rocks every so often would be cool to see. And yeah, eventually having some roads and trails (1 or 2 painted roads, a few more paved but not painted, and a bunch of 2-tracks) would be nice.

    AI Aerial Refueling (ACE 2)

Is there still a way to get the same functionality without the module? Say for instance that you want to have a custom route around the map instead of whatever the module does.
  17. ALICE is a global module, you place it, and it works, regardless of where the player(s) is located at. No need to sync at all, or any grouping. Just place and go. The ACM, though, only works within a certain radius of a synchronized unit (the sync will move to other units in the same group if the original unit dies. So you only need to sync it once per group). There's a thread somewhere here where I found some init variables for the ACM. Things like spawn radius, skill level, spawnable factions, etc. I'm on on my laptop though, and don't have the lines on here, so I will have to reply when I get back to my main.

    AI And RPG re-supply

I know that the AI squad leaders will tell their men to grab more ammo from the best location (even a dead body if that's the only place for them to get ammo) when they run out (which is about 5-10 rounds before they actually do). Or at least, that's what they do in EW.

    Other copters?

For the USMC you have the UH-1Y Huey, the AH-1W/Z cobra, the HH-60S Knighthawk (More globally known as a Blackhawk), and the new AH-64 Apache. The Russians have the Mi-8 Hip (and variations of it), the Mi-24 Hind (And variations), and the Ka-52 (Hokum? I can't remember the name of this one. There's also the (Black) version, which I don't know how it's different). Any other Helicopters are addons, and not in the "Vanilla" game.
  20. Maybe a bit easier...Can you make an update to include the same icons for them that are on the default units? Like the medic having the cross, Support with the arrow, Team leader having a single line across, etc. etc. etc. And your groups are...odd. A grenadier In charge with a "Team Leader" running 2nd-3rd? It may just be simple stuff that I could do if I knew what I needed to do. But otherwise, amazing quality, and the RH weapons are a perfect match, even without the SCAR in the actual game.
  21. Oh yeah, now that ACE2 has the PLA units... Whoever is working on this really actually should do the exact same campaign (except we need all the RU units on the blufor side instead of OpFor), same objectives and all, just with Arma instead of DR. And yes, definitely call it Operation RisingDragon.

    MV-22 Opsrey folding...

That's an odd one. I've seen it in the "2-wheeler" mode though. This isn't made for having a player in control, or even the AI. It's made for looking pretty while still being locked.

    Does Night-time Matter?

Oh yeah. You need to realize that most of the Russian infantry have no night vision. Only their team/squad leaders, compared to everybody in the USMC. Sadly, the static spotlight "gunners" don't do a good job of scanning their area, and won't even look at enemies shooting at them with the light. At least, not at minimal skill level, as a private...

    MP5 in larger size???

I'm more interested in the XM8 and its variants being centered right. At the moment, the soldier is always holding the sight at his forehead, and the stock is almost resting on top of the shoulder.
  25. So is this the case with the "vanilla" apache too? I'm having issues with getting lock (not target, I can still tab over to the target) on armor targets with the hellfires. It works fine with an AI gunner though. I do have ACE installed, but it's setup as a mod.
