Yep. I would like that so much too - complete variable control. Simply because it's realistic. I cannot really understand why this had ever been changed? Were developers led by arcadish thoughts? ;-)

That's one of the most fascinating aspects to me with BI games! (I opened another thread on this, didn't know this one, at http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=80584)
-
Perhaps this helps some people struggling with the hardware hungry game: Set two groups of people from the opposite sides into a town. Few of them should be able to see the other sides people. Set yourself as civil person into the middle - a little aside. And ... watch. And watch. I was really fascinated how intelligent the bots act. They even came from behind the main line after some time. It was like watching a film of war and you yourself in the midst of it. In better-than-video-on-TV graphics. Thanx BI ! - for this wonderful game.

How to fix Arma 2 in 11 easy steps...
Herbal Influence replied to Redfist's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
US Zombie - I really thank you for doing all the typework. I was quite embarrassed when I first read Redfists thread opener, which included some wrong and quite basic misinformations - like there would be no wizard for editing. When reading "A default revive module which is easy to configure ..... Why do players, who pay for the game, have to rely on the skills and work of a community?", I simply gave up the thought of commenting it all by myself. "Would this be another of that annoying lamentos from cogamers, whining about a non-ready-to-big-blast-away-the-enemy-in-full-unnatural-but-bombastic-consumers-service-kiddy-games?" No, it is not that. It's a serious and a engaged post. Not only for he has shown the most important character trait we all need - building and being a community: He seriously and fast admitted when he was eventually wrong on subjects. I seriously hope I can do so too. And my only 2cents to this all is now, that the discussion has been lead to quite an end, to again lead the focus on what we do have here, with the BI games and why you quite NEVER payed enough for it and why you quite NEVER should ask something to work like you want it to! be aware: Herewith I do not mean the essential bugs, the game sure had! These bugs have been erased in *such* a short time, big enterprises would be happy to have debugged their daily-run-enterprise-software (paying a 20.000,00 Euros per month basic plus working hours of the software specialists (100 - 400 Euros/h net). And what are we here to deal with ? It's the leading edge of "software", it's the crown jewels of software, it's the open end at which noone knows whether we will call it software within the next decades of developement anymore: Is it still common software, if 'things' in it act independently and the course of action cannot be foreseen by anyone? Is it a 'machine' like we are educated to think of hardware running a certain software? It's not about doing routine work - like Microsoft's operation system or SAP CRM-Software or .. or ... it's more like that which is developed at the MIT of Cambridge or the DFKI in Germany (both easy to google), so called Centers of Excellence on artificial intelligence: Systems open to the world, interacting, giving a surplus on the "user generated content". Only one though the greatest of it's aspects is: the openess of its world: Lately people here discussed the problem of parachuters falling into trees. AA2 did react correctly. Physically. Though (!) possibly no developer ever did foresee or test this situation. It's a complex moddeled world where things can happen that noone ever did foresee. Now consider this a bug! Because - well, hanging around in a tree ... it's not much fun then ... might happen to you (though not toooooo probable .. but there ARE trees in the desert) - in a desert far away from your colleagues: Noone to save you by shooting you (down ... ). But ... ahm ... lez wait ... a week or two .. there will be someone who opens a thread: "Hey! I PAYED for this game 50 bucks!! And now I am hanging in a tree in a desert all-mission-long ??!! How CAN that be!!" In other words: Each AI you placed on the map in the editor, may it be with or without vehicle or weapon, has its own "life" - he reacts 'on its own' to all environmental influences. Noone knows the concrete developments of reactions for he is only told to react this or that way to enviroment, but environment changes from second to second especially for it consists of other AIs acting the same way "independently" and also onf avatars acting by direct steering through humans. There cannot be no "bugs". There cannot be each and every "module" to handle this and that special situation. For each second there can be new situations never experienced by anyone but you. Well, don't take this too serious, it's got quite an essay now. Sure quite a helpless attempt to explain what's exciting about BI games ... but I didn't have the time to say it clearer and shorter ... ;-) -
Acoustic Guitar v 1.00 released
Herbal Influence replied to USSRsniper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Great. With this instrument, I think we are straight on the road to simulating a close-to-real peace movement from the late 70s. The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind, the answer ... ;-)) -
Please give us your system specifications. Perhaps it's eays and cheap to upgrade. You sure will want it soon ... Sure you can have fun - especially with BI-games (like OFP, AA1 and AA2) also on low settings for the great graphics are just a surplus on what really matters (strategical games, openess of the "world" and editoring it all), but you will increasingly feel compelled to see it all it's whole beauty.:) I first had the specs of the Madmatt (above) and it was only a 100 Euros for the 9600 GT (which is better than most 9800 GT for it has 1 MByte Cache) and a 60 Euros for the upgrade of the cpu to what you see below. And it all was done within minutes of "work". Depending on the cpu-socket you may even be able to upgrade cheaply with an Intel cpu. (Though I don't like Intel cpus for Intel didn't have to pay 1 Billion Euros for illegal distribution practises in the EU and elsewhere which harmed consumer interests.)

To "it's" name ?! Oh please don't treat OFPDR like something being original ... it's just a try of a copy of OFP, AA1 and AA2. Codemaster only has withheld the name. They never DID Operation Flashpoint. It was all done by BI: The idea, the game, the openess of the gameworld. I believe - but not sure about that - that even the name "Operation Flashpoint" was invented by BI, but that a single contract clause left Codemaster the right to use that name or trademark ... Everbody else can try to build something like Operation Flashpoint, Microsoft, Ubisoft ... I would never call that "Operation Flashpoint", because it can only be a copy of the great game BI invented.

ScreenShots of all the different graphic settings for ARMA 2 (1920 x 1080, Big Pics)
Herbal Influence replied to koroush47's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Thanx koroush47 ! But I wouldn't like that either ... with this amout of Postprocessing ("Very High") you do completely blurr out much of the nice details showing a picture of quite a big (far!) landscape. BI never said that postprocessing is best on "very high". It's just an option, but nothing to get a better picture. I would really recommend to switch it off or to very low. The graphic is really great than. Just try it. And it would - if you like to post examples - much better show of what great quality the graphics of AAII are. Again: It's not the best to have a great richness of details and than blurring it all with intense postprocessing. The way you one it - decreasing postprocessing and quality at the same time - it has a strange effect: The graphics seems better (sharper, more details) on your "low settings" picture than on the later ones! This - I didn't try it out - may be a result of BIs programing of "high" and "low" settings, i.e. done automatically. But it's not true that it's better a picture - it's only a bigger load on the cpu - I think. But thanx nevertheless for the correct resolution data changement. -

ScreenShots of all the different graphic settings for ARMA 2 (1920 x 1080, Big Pics)
Herbal Influence replied to koroush47's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Sorry, normally I am not so harsh, but these pictures are likely to ruin for some the correct (!) rumour that AA2 has great graphics for koroush47 posts "highRES" pics without highRES settings - as Bulldogs and Alex72 said. I would really recommend Koroush47 to *immediately* correct this. This is more than stupid, if it's left this way. Many will not read further after they have seen that bad pics as "HighRES"-pics ... -

I'm recieving this game in the next week. Do people still play co-op multiplayer?
Herbal Influence replied to Fenderstratdave's topic in MULTIPLAYER
With the correct addons you will have the possibility to join a few starting servers every 5 min - my experience. Remember that OF does not accept "join in progress". You should filter by "server status" to see the "waiting" or "creating" servers. You can use most servers in status "creating" by typing "#vote admin YOURNAME" and then chose a mission and wait for others to join. They cannot join after you started the mission. -
ArmA2 did strange things to my comuter tonight.
Herbal Influence replied to BeerHunter's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
No offence, but maybe, it was the influence of herbals? Maybe in the beer you are daily hunting?! Sorry, had to write this !! ;-))) I think another process was slowing down your PC - like an update of the security software or windows itself. This, together with a why-so-ever-slowed down internetconnection (shit happens) might cause that behaviour. As far as I know Microsoft-PCs send regularly encrypted data to Microsoft ... might be another cause for a slowdown. The re-arrangement of the desktop symbols has sometimes happened to me for no reason. -
A two years ago I tried to buy it in Germany. You could get it for no less than 25 Euros ... only ebay.de. There were multiple offerings at ebay.de but none cheaper. ... prices were the same with amazon.de at that time.

I'm really baffled by the way people are playing the online multiplayer game.
Herbal Influence replied to cadmium77's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
Yeah, you sure are right that in Europe gamers often simply don't know how to communicate with chat lines whereas most of the US gamer know a bit common english. :p On the above issue: While you are transported or runnig or driving like in reality, you can do some socialising - like in reality. You may plan the next steps especially together with guys on the same chopper using yellow vehicle channel etc. etc. ... I promise you are much more excited when you arrive at your aim ie. crawl into the enemy base your heart is pounding much louder as when you respawned next to the enemy. It's all about *creating* excitement. A deathmatch is much less exciting to me compared with a journey through the woods and hills and at last arriving and fighting much more concentrated then. Always knowing: the enemy has to invest the same amount of - travelling *and* has same time of planing to do things and - reality ! Just my 2cents. -
For the community was always so small, mature, smart and communicative ... there was never the need for this. Things like that were done "individually". That's something I loved. By now it seems the community is attracting so many noobs - don't forget the holidays for pupils - that it's often indeed unbearable and may harm the attractiveness of AA2 to new gamers. Old gamers know that you can only do a serious combat with trustworthy cogamers and a hard door server. But don't whine and blame BI for this: I wouldn't like that to be implemented as "standard". It's only important for open games on public servers. Like you yourself wrote it's the community that developes such things in time when needed. Sure it was quite early needed in Counterstrike. Something that cannot be compared to BI-games.
-
Yeah - again ... fascinating how realistic AA2-gameplay is ... things happen like in real life although no developer did ever think about it to happen ... GREAT !
-
Nah ........ I did do OF, AA1 and AA2 a lot: AA1 may still have bugs. There is no software without bugs. But you can have hours of fun with it, with it's phantastic graphics and gameplay. I played it for years now. My opinion simply is: It needs no more patch, it's nice as it is. It's a complex simulation: There will always be bugs for it's natural openness.
