Don't have Far Cry, but I believe that Arma2 is more hardware demanding for good reason (on that here). And with a bit tweaking you can often change things for better. My rig did cost in late 2006 about a 600 Euros. For Arma2 I bought a new cpu (60 Euro) and a new graphic card (100 Euro) and time for installing this was below 3 min each and ... (see spoiler) everything runs fine with a mix of normal, high and highest settings. And with AMD-socket AM2 I can even put in a quadcore with 4 x 3.4 GHz for a 153,76 Euro ... but I don't feel the need to. ;-)

@Lughnut: you r completely right. @Mango and all new to forums: Why does this thread have quite an angry tone overall? Though we are all cogamers and want more and more mature gamers to be fascinated as we are? - Threads with titles like this one are an offence to the BI games committed gamers by the very wording of the title. It's provocating. - Posts that hit the core of it all, which is freedom and openess, are likely to arise an angry debate. - There is, after all, a bit of tiredness over having to explain again and again, what this milsim is about and that it shouldn't be compared to simple FPS (first person shooters). And it is not easy to explain with words for you have to "feel" it. Once you felt it, you get addicted to it.

Mondkalb's "How to create an Addon from scratch"

Wow - a really teasing thing it is ... By the by: Found a whole german phrase in there ... sure it's something redundant. -
ArmA 2 50% off this weekend on Steam.
Herbal Influence replied to Fudgeblood's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
This thread should be merged with this. BI games are the only software that I ever seen does also have increasing prices years after release, so, buy it. ;-) OFP-GOTY was in 2003/2004 more expensive than ever before. I tried to get it through ebay/amazon below 25 Euros for friends. No chance. -
How Satisfied with Arma2 Are you??
Herbal Influence replied to mattyh1986's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
No problems here. Please do not generalize. That doesn't help find the solution of YOUR problems but derails. -
Oh .. I would really be pissed off to have to play other thing than Arma2. I can fully understand. I lost some coplayers due to the hardware intensiveness of Arma2. They continue with OFP. At last they will be "back" when they have new hardware in a year or so. Perhaps get in an Arma2 - clan not to become childish? ;-)) And tell them: BI games are like good red wine: The longer they live the better they are. I just recently asked a cogamer to install the beta-patches ... I still hear his enthusiasted voice ringing in my ears ... :-) Let them drink limo all the time and see them avoiding adulthood ... ;-)

So Team Killing is rewarded in this game??

Hey - that's earnestly the sense of duty and seriousness we all need. Thanx for your serious acting and posted thoughts (I quoted only few of it, but I all liked it) on this. Thanx M9ACE. -

Yeah, sure, it's automatic conversion. And sure, it's still a bargain, it's an economic phenomena ... If interested my (and others) more detailed opinions on the value here. -

Well - people should really buy it then ... ;-)) I tried to get original OFP-GOTY in ... ah .. about 2003/2004 for some friends on: amazon and on ebay. No chance below 25 Euros ... I think BI games are the only games ever which have rising prices after being about 3 years on the market. :-) EDIT: I hit the link you given and ... the price is 19,99 € ... sure the pages localizes you (and change prices shown relating to where you are coming from). -
Nice - it quite explicitly shows the evolution of the games ! Thanx !
-
LOL ... nice comparison .... yeah, I know what you mean. It's hardware demanding - I think that's the reason ... ``?

In another post of today njmatrix says Arma2 is buggy and virtually unplayable. Just to inform people about his relationship with truth.

What if CryEngine was used as Arma 3 future engine?
Herbal Influence replied to jonneymendoza's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
You don't know that. It is simply dumb to ask Mercedes to buy an engine from BMW. The price would be enormous for simple reasons. And in this case: It wouldn't even work, for the game cannot be compared to this milsim. You don't know that. It is not obvious. I like them not spending money on tricky-shitty marketing like Codemaster did and does - if you mean that "obvious" thing. There is indeed no reason for them to do so. I wouldn't want them to. This is wrong. It's not buggy. And it's very playable. Having had hundreds of hourslong multiplayer games since release. Don't tell people false things. -

So Team Killing is rewarded in this game??
Herbal Influence replied to wildone_106's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
Good pictured - Markwick! ;-) There is a long thread about the bad behaviour on public servers ... There are so many noobish admins ... that's the reason for that shit. If you enter public server, say hello to admin and ask him politely, whether he does serious admin job, e.g. kicking teamkillers or sidechangers (in Warfare missions). If he doesn't answer or does answer (often) in an unappropriate manner ("who are you ... to speak to me ..." etc. etc.), consider it as just a kids & noobs server and accept that or even better: leave. Whereas teamkilling can happen - but the teamkiller should immediately at least say "sorry" and if it happens three times I would say: Kickem nevertheless ! -

Tophe - you see, second paragraph was a translation of the first. @Dimon: Please mark your translations as translations to avoid irritations. Or better better use bad English instead of German. With "Erkännung" he meant "Erkennung" and that means: detection/recognition ... On topic: I remember this was so in Armed Assault ..... and was critized by some cogamers for being not realistic. There is a thread about that ... dunno where, but there is. ;-) -
We were often lan-gaming at night in a big, very dark internetcafe on some smoky roof of a higher building downtown. Cheap, dirty, romantic ... in a way. We were always ssooo frustrated for it closed at midnight without any pardon. But this had a nice side-effect. We went into a nearby pub for a beer (or two) and (had to!) discuss(ed) what we have done the last hours: long exciting battles! We told ourselves stories and those very scenarios that happened during our fight all over Everon or Nogova. "How did you know we were in that house?" "Did you see me managing to get into your mhq and drive it into the sea?" "First we thought you were based north and were just tricking us by retaking our southern times ... " etc. etc. All thinking about how to avoid mistakes next time and improve abilities ... or even creating new missions. It was like having been "on stage" like a rockband and we were needing the discussion to calm down on it. And indeed .... gaming was so exciting, you were trembling most of the time ... This never happened with any other game, but this great openess of BI games made that possible. We really felt like having had an adventure, "had survived" and had to tell each other. Shit this internet cafe closed ... we were the only four, five guests at night .. so we do game now deep in our velvet seats, more comfortable, but I do miss these times. The big discussion after the adventure ... was a surplus. And it did only make sense for BI games are that open, missions are that complex, vast and can last for hours, steadily getting more exciting (getting closer to enemy base ... crouching in). I often compare it to a thriller on TV that builds up excitement more and more to the end - but you act in it. Sure, the beer was important too - we were so outrun of energy ... ;-))

I am speechless reading this on the frontpage of tacticalgamers.com with a big DragonRising-logo at the beginning: How can he/they say, "shows that Dragon Rising will share the same gameplay focus as the original Operation Flashpoint (and ArmA successors) - Coop missions." This is false. But worst is he does it without mentioning that Arma2 *has* a dedicated server and is a completely different attitude to gaming? Just another example how harmful Dragon Rising is for BI.

Yeah, I often feel like the threadopener ... people seem often seem to simply bash around often enough completely misunderstanding BI games at all. But there are also again and again people who simply want to express their fascination and thankfulness and it's us to keep those threads alife. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=84477 http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=87653 Also nice to read: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=87487 To me BI games are an endless, positive philosophy and a piece of art. (But I must admit I never had any serious technical problems with it, though I use quite midrange hardware - see spoiler).

There is absolutely no need to visit servers with missions you don't like. Let freedom be free. Gamers have since ever been running in closed worlds ... but not in BI games: they are vastly open. Why do you care what others do? I myself don't like no-tactic gameplay - but after three exciting hours of cti I find myself ready for a fast shooter and I am happy it'll be there, even in Arma2! "The rest maddogx have it all covered."

ARMA II now wonderful...after an HD5870 and i7-920!
Herbal Influence replied to kondor999's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
It did cost me a 100 Euros for a new graphic card and 60 Euros for a new CPU to get this game running (see spoiler below) - just in case someone thinks you really need to invest 1200 bucks. CPU was faster inserted than new graphic card (below 3 minutes each) and I still have the option to get a quadcore with even an higher frequency. Sure I don't get that fraps you get with i7 and a 5870 - but I wouldn't hesitate to have a fast CTF or a jet fight ... whatever .... ;-) -
Any contract MP Mission Builders for $$ ?
Herbal Influence replied to Pappy60's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - USER MISSIONS
Yeah - but then don't post here whether this friendship pays out a lot ... ;-) The clans I know let their members at most pay for the costs of the clan itself (running server and homepage). I would respect and accept BI if they don't want commercial mission making. But it's different in the OpenSource-Movement (Linux etc.): You can hire anyone at anytime to build something for you. The community likes this very much and enforces this because it enriches the community for you are to share the source code. So if BMW does do all it's multimedia (+ navi & board computer - I think) with Linux (which they are 'officially' thinking of or even have begun with) - the whole world of carmanufactures would profit therefrom: It's all about not inventing the wheel x-times ... -

Herbal Influence replied to Pappy60's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - USER MISSIONS
But sure there is the possibility to ask BI directly for an allowance (if needed). Maybe one of their apprentices also makes it for a nice price .... with charm of being a somewhat official mission? I would really be interested ... to know the outcome. But ... maybe there is no problem it all: As far as I know you are not allowed to use the special editing helpers form BI to earn money with them, but mission making itself is possible with the game itself. As you said this would only be a surplus if you are obligated to share the missions with something like the GPL. Sure there would arise a problem if the commercial missions get so attractive that BI gets under pressure by not reacting to someone who has them (and with them many players) under sole control. -
What is the value of a decent Simulation Engine??
Herbal Influence replied to S!fkaIaC's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
BI games are much underpriced. I would ask them to take at least 100,00 Euro/150 USDollar to make clear what it's about. It's simply more than gaming, much more. And since OFP lasts since 2001 for me and has given me about a 365 x 1 h x 8,5 years = 3102,5 hrs of fun - I fear much more ;-) - it's at most a 0,008 Euros per hour. Every alternative is more expensive: Cinema, even watching TV or listening to radio, not to speak of drinking a beer ... or taking a bath or having a shower. I think it's not even close to being as expensive as having a simple walk outside ... considering your shoes wearing out ... but ... please mind your backs ... don't reject a walk because of this! ;-) A recent and serious study showed that Linux is worth more than 1 Billion Euros (1.000.000.000,00 Euro) for it takes x hours of x Euros to reprogram it.
