  1. Pufu, people have already told you that mods can be loaded into a game at run time. All of your other arguments are pompous assumptions that they are not compatible with the community. Its very similar to richiespeeds argument in another thread. Which is mostly a belief that arma2's community should remain small. Infact, most of your argument, as I re-read your posts, are mostly philisophical. If you cannot have an open mind when it comes to increasing flexibility and ease of use for new players, then your argument is pointless because I want more players in this game. You have not provided a single technological reason for the inability of BIS to add these features, except the addon one which was dissproved.

Now, I am going to tell you this so you dont waste your time. I know how to code, and I know how memory works. I also know how to network and have an understanding of socket systems. Will I be BIS's employee, no, but I do know for a fact that BIS can implement these things. Dont waste your time arguing that they are not capable. It's probably an insult to BIS programmers.

BTW, you have now misread my posts more than once. (talking about the addons list responsibility)

His point was that you are making assumptions without considering how the engine operates, it isn't Unreal Engine and just because another game can do it doesn't mean that this one can.

Since you know about networking I don't have to point out that BIS would have to host a network hub through which all clients must be routed in order to achieve what you want with regard to a lobby. BIS simply will not do that. It costs them money for limited benefit to themselves as a company.

You mentioned Guild Wars being free but ignore the fact that they made their money through DLC packs and up front sales of followup releases. ArmA 2 will never be that popular and BIS cannot produce subsequent titles on such a tight schedule.

  2. Seeing as there's no OA forum yet...

There is still generally some confusion as to the exact nature of OA, I read it's an expansion, I read it's standalone, I read it's compatible with ArmA2, etc etc.

Does anyone with any real knowledge actually know yet? Is it an expansion designed to install over/alongside ArmA2? Is it a standalone product with the option of installing over/alongside ArmA2? Is it some user-defined combo of the above, ala IL2? Is it satandalone only, with the user option of manually importing ArmA2 content?

I can state, with absolute certainty that:

BIS will announce something about this in the future

  3. Yeah BIS really does rock, shame Codemasters was such an AMAZING EPIC FAIL with OPF-DR. I couldn't believe how amazing that fail was I laugh when I think of it, literally, shame I wasted 80 francs on it.

Hope BIS can get a new engine though, I can't think of any that would support that map size, but I would certainly enjoy some epic animations, sounds, AI, etc...

There will never be a game that does it all. Tech just cannot keep up. The twitch games get the gloss without the depth/scope/size and the niche games that push the limits will never have the polish. It will take 20 years before my other favorite game looks like ArmA 2 and then it will still be 20 years out of date in regards to graphics.

  4. I don't know what you qualify as a crappy rig, but I think it's fair to say that Arma2 requires a state-of-the-art PC which many people don't have as of yet. Few people would contest that. It is true that with the natural advancement of gaming hardware, more and more people (i.e. the average gamer) will soon start to have rigs that'll run the game.

For example, my brother has an approx. 2-year-old rig (still above the minimum requirements) and he has to play with pretty much all settings low. Those visuals do bear a similarity to those of OFP. Of course there are improvements, but it's nothing close to Zipper5's picture.

I recently spent 800€ to update my system to play Arma2, I installed the game yesterday and tomorrow I'll find out how the game runs. 800€ is a lot of money to pay and I won't still able to play the game with very high settings. Not many people, especially those who aren't familiar with the game series, will update their rig to play a game with as steep a learning curve and a lack of instant gratification. Just learning all the key commands is a daunting task for a newcomer.

well I'm running a q6600 processor if that gives you any clue.

---------- Post added at 01:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 AM ----------

hes running by default because thats the way the game ships. as lapa said keymapping and the numerous options are great but daunting to the newcomer to the game.

I looked at both games side by side and to be real honest they both have pluses and minuses. Dr is more photo realistic in its look but kind of bland in its colors. Arma2 is more colorful but lacks the realistic feel. I guess this is just my opinion but i have been playing both games and compared my visuals with press release photos of arma2 and i see the same as in game.

as far as movement its hard to explain clunky! Ive rid the motion blur and most of the mouse lag and play it on normal settings but the movment just doesnt feel fluid. I dont want a cod experience but the movement in cod is fluid as well as dr but i guess this is just one point in the game thats unchangeable.

I guess we just have to accept the fact this is a niche game and the hardcore players will love it and the casual gamer wont want to spend the time learning it. Hopefully bis can improve the graphics and movement at some point to match up but hey , its still a good game and im glad there still sticking wit the pc instead of the cm debacle!

He isn't a noob, he knows how to change it, a double tap on the key is not that much to ask to reverse the key states

  5. Personally, I've found it to be a aggravation. I like the challenges but many are not realistic, learning to fly a helicopter and doing a challenge to pick up and deliver passengers, the timer runs out when waiting for the granny AI to get in, things like that. It is more of a tutorial and practice than anything and I only found it useful in that regard, somewhat.

Unlocking things seems an unnecessary chore when you can access it all in the editor and an inconvenience when you just want to work with one specific piece of equipment and you haven't unlocked anything yet.

  6. Bulldogs , thanks for all the pointers. I will give them a go and see i f it makes a better experience for me

Nice pic of the difference there zip but im guessing this is not the view most are seeing just based on the youtube videos ive seen. I will reserve final judgement until ive given it some more tweaks.

I never said dr was a good game just that " i " like the way its rendered and the fluid movement. I hate the limited fov , no lean , no lookaround , and all the other bugs but visually, while not optimum it looks pretty good to me. Arma just has a clunky feel to the movement , i cant really explain what it is but its there. ( and yes i play DR too! )

I only posted in response to the question why the game wasnt more popular and although im good at pc tinkering if you have to jump through hoops just to get it to play decent many people will just shelve it and move on to something else.

looks like ive got a nickle in it now! :-)

I'd like to know what you tube vids you have been watching, I have a crappy rig compared to most here it it still looks great. Not sure what you mean by clunky movement, perhaps you have the headbob on? Maybe it just feels smooth to me because I've played games that were much more stiff.

  7. Nope. I completed every mission without having to use the cheats on my first playthrough. Granted I did have slowdown in the major cities FPS-wise, as did everyone until that was fixed, but performance was what I had expected overall. I never encountered any gamebreaking bugs until I played through the campaign on my 4th or 5th time, and that was with the beta patches changing things so often.

But perhaps I'm of the right mind-set to know enough about how the game works to not try and break it, like some people do and then complain about it. I know that if by doing something it may break it so I stay clear of that. Perhaps others don't. The campaign itself never felt broken to me, it just didn't feel engaging enough once I got into the Warfare stages. :(

Fair enough, but I see something wrong with having to handle a game like a fragile egg and actively avoid breaking it.

I'm too busy playing 'Hello Kitty Island Adventure' with Butters to buy another game!

    There's a mod for that.

  8. Anyone that rants on about how realistic they want their games to be, and at the same time complains that it takes longer than 5 minutes to complete a "match" as they call it are not to be taken seriously anyway. Simply not worth the effort it takes to type out one side of an adult conversation.

For them a reward is a flashing text and a new unlock. For me (and I imagine many other BIS fans) it is seeing all of the objectives ticked-off and friendly casualties kept to a necessary minimum. Like how a real army fights. I haven't seen any flashing text showing up on HUDs or UAV screens in unedited news-coverage of either Iraq or Afghanistan so far.

Don't waste your time, play ArmA2 instead.

IMO it would make combat so much less traumatic if they did :D

---------- Post added at 08:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 AM ----------

Also, this thread should be locked. The behavior in that other forum (by both sides) is simply asinine, behaving like that does nothing to promote ArmA 2 or its community.

  9. One small correction there Pufu, there are lots of games that allow mods/addons to be activated on the fly. I can't name any recent ones since I prefer more complex games like this one, but I do remember some games I have played even had a mod tab in their menu where you could choose what to activate. Conversions being the exception.

I have no idea if BIS can make this possible with this engine, but if possible it would be very convenient, at least for things like units and islands. Other types of addons/mods would be hard to fit into that but in the very least, having the server list reflect the active mod folders would be a huge help.

I don't see a need for BIS 'approved' addons, there are many websites linked from the respective mod pages in the forum that are quite established and safe. I don't see people needing to randomly search the internet for such things and potentially downloading viruses.

  10. What else am I supposed to say? All he has been doing since he joined these forums is trolling about how bad the game is. No matter what I answer he always responds with "BIS made a crap game, it should be this that and the other"...

Why do people act so hypocritical? Fine, express your opinions on how bad you think the game is. But if you don't know how to do better yourself, don't start telling people how THEY can do it better. Especially not an established profesional games developer.

    Opinions are fine!

Demands are not! Unless you can do better yourself, you have no right to tell other people how to do things.

I give up posting in this thread. Either way, we all lose, we are all arguing on the internet, and we are all about as contructive as a wooden plank.

Everybody just wants a cheap shot at everybody else, to make themselves look smart I guess. We all fall into this category, don't deny it.

    Richie.

Relax, it is pretty realistic, but it is just a game :p

  11. Like said many times, the learning curve is not the main reason, as most players quit before they even reach the point where the learning curve is anywhere near becoming a problem for them. Unless you call installing/finding mods/missions/servers that are fun to play with/on a "learning curve".

There is a reason I also said "finding a server" and not just getting into said server. Unless you're a Domination fan you'll have a very hard time finding a populated server running something good, and even if you like domination, then finding a server with people, not to mention people that will actually play with you on some kind of level or at least not TK you and destroy your base, is not trivial.

Have to disagree with you there. I haven't looked for much lately, been offline for month and only played warfare recently, since it is new to me. Haven't had an issue finding servers to play on though.

    You're a clever bunny.

Why don't you go make a game? Oh no I forgot!

    You don't know how too...

There's that maturity you were bragging about.

---------- Post added at 01:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:53 AM ----------

My opinion why its not more popular:

Still looks like ofp , graphics arent that good looking on medium computers or its just not playable.

Motion blur , it just sucks , you cant see worth beans as you swing to meet a threat!

Mouse lag , when you do swing its not very fluid since the delay causes over movement. it can be adjusted down but it's still there.

I didnt play arma because i was burnt out on ofp and thought this would be an upgrade , i really dont see it though.

not sure if this is safe to say here but if this game looked like dr and had its fluid movement i think it would be much more popular.

these are the things keeping me from really getting into this game.

ps i wouldnt even try online due to these limitations since it would just be an exercise in futility anyway.

    My 2 cents!

Post Processing affects motion blur, you can turn it off and I'm on a medium computer and it looks and runs fine. I find it odd you would say that this game would be more popular if it more resembled a game that was a total failure....

  12. You would do well to look in the editing forums and ask questions there, SBSMAC is just making a pack of scripts that many mission makers use in order to help those that don't know how to do what they want to with the game and created his little app to assist in that goal. There are plenty of people with knowledge in the editing forums that can help you with the complex scripting and you could ask the ACE team about the key binds since they have their own for their mod.
