CM Operation Flashpoint 3 announced | "Oops, they're doing it again..."
Calradian replied to Undeceived's topic in OFFTOPIC
So you are well informed, experienced and have good taste - good for you... you just lack the analytical skill to recognize that only CM are doing a pitiful try to deliver a game in the same category as OFP, ArmA & ArmA2 (I like to call it War Simulation Kit). Because... ...this and all other games, existing or in development that I know of, will fall in other categories failing to reach the huge scale, impressive features list and modding/customization factored in by design. -

Let me put it this way: In 2001 Bohemia Interactive Studio starts making the Operation Flashpoint series - the "Harley-Davidson" type experience in shooters while ALL others were making "bicycles with two additional support wheels for kids learning to ride" type of experience. In 2009, while all others are making awesome looking but still bicycles, the publisher (company that helped with funding & shipping, not the ones getting dirty fixing the engine & transmission): CodeMasters makes "the sequel" - a scooter with the Harley-Davidson logo on it. Now they are making the new & improved "3rd version" by adding two additional support wheels... BIS products aren't perfect, but if you learn to ride or better yet to customize them - it will be one of the most memorable experiences in your life. -
What does ARMA 2 have that Operation Flashpoint 2 doesn't?

Disclaimer 1: I'm not a BIStudio fanboy incapable to admit negative views on ArmA2. I know its has a long road ahead of squashing bugs, tuning balance and squeezing performance. Disclaimer 2: Nothing personal householddog - I just hate when people talk lots of crap without knowing shit :) I'm by far not an expert in game engines but they normally ignore this kind of discussion anyway - so lets point out things that even a dilettante like me could notice. Not hard at all - its a typical situation when the bottleneck is not the graphic card but the microprocessor. Assuming it's the graphic part of the game engine you are talking about - I'd say that taking into account the complexity (number & detail of objects and applied effects - not the visual quality of it) of the scenes it usually has to render - it has an amazing performance! I don't know the exact stats and can't directly compare with another graphic engine but I can say: ArmA2 has the best virtual forests I've ever seen! Not visually stunning little grooves with fogs and nearby hills hiding the horizon conveniently cutting the complexity of the scene - but massive amount of trees, bushes, grass and other objects for many virtual kilometers away. All the objects on those forest I mentioned are dynamic - meaning grass moves when you crawl around, bushes fall broken by a light vehicle, and heavy ones are just killdozers ;) And that is just a tiny dot in the long feature list of this unique game engine. One of the biggest dots on that list is the amazing network code that makes all of that work for "limited only by server & bandwidth" number of players. If resolving physics and other complex processes (like advanced non-scripted AI group interaction for instance) would be so easy Armagan Yavuz would have included multiplayer in his masterpiece way before it hit beta v0.6. As for the ease of codding to bypass a game engine limitations... that only shows your "deep understanding" of game development and programming in general. You started to play PC games last week right? :D Now, seriously - the "top notch PC" label wears off really quick - buying at least a new graphic card every other year is a common practice in PC gaming. What really takes awful lots of time is waiting for a masterpiece of video game entertainment to be finished. The sequel of Operation Flashpoint (Armed Assault was just a visual upgrade) - one of the best in all gaming history is keeping me waiting 8 years and counting... so can you recommend me anything even remotely similar to what ArmA2 can offer? -

As if post count/registration date would excuse that... but you're right - nothing personal BloodBomb - you just happen to be in the wrong time & place for me - I just finished a similar discussion with some pals IRL. Nonetheless - this is a useless thread and you are rationalizing your laziness IF you made it to learn which game is more realistic/OFP-like. Now, if the goal of this thread would be compiling in the 1st post an objective and easy to understand for all newcomers differences list... but than again - somebody has to PLAY them both for the list to be of any real use. -

Wrong... you do some basic research and if got interested enough - google the gaming media, browse official forums and search for answers. If all that fail - then you ask. My point being - RTFM/do you research and stop making useless threads  Problem is - most people do things the right way only if they have to... Offtopic: ...unless english isn't 1st language and more importantly it's typed on a non-linguistic-related forum on the internet - where mature people usually discuss the topic not the spelling of each other. -

Sorry to sound rude... but anyone with half a brain can make an educated guess about wich game will be "the true incarnation": 1) ArmA II - made by the DEVELOPERS of the OFP/ArmA series with the same but upgraded version of the unique military simulation engine going more than decade without any real competition on the market. 2) OFP: DR - PUBLISHERS of OFP with totaly another team and engine trying to make the first attempt using name and ideas "borrowed" from BI Studio.
