  1. Update on KS page: introducing their music composer Jeffrey Hayat and 2 Ground Branch sample tracks you can hear right away http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/670743543/ground-branch/posts
  2. Definitely. It happend to me with R6 and GR. When OFP just launched I tried it a few times, but it was very hard to get in. Then years and years I played R6 and GR and in 2008(?) I picked up Armed Assault. And immediately went to Arma 2 when released. Somehow I was just not ready for OFP and the more accessible tac shooters like R6 and GR paved the way :) Pledged $125. We need this game!

    Automatic Mod Downloading

Yes, the only thing that Six Updater has been missing IMO, as an end user, is a choice between simplified and advanced version of the software. Because the regular Six Updater interface, new presets etc. can get complicated for some people. Heck, I also still have lots of problems managing simple presets etc. So the Six launcher, which is still in it's early development, is a very welcome addition. Add some more options and customization (but not too much) and it's exactly something that could help A3 along when it's bundled together. Although it still doesn't fix when you join an addon server with the in-game browser which cannot redirect you to the correct auto mod downloading. So some integration with the in-game server browser would really help as well. I hope something like that is planned for A3 :)
  4. Makes a return? It never left  Or are we talking about something totally different :/
  5. Do you have any independent and objective numbers about this? A lot of tactical games have moved to a broader audience, but this can be because of a multitude of reasons, for example they can get more sales in the broader market compared to the sales in the niche market. It doesn't mean that the # of people interested in real tac shooters is declining. And not everyone likes Arma, after my original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon time it took me years to finally get into OFP/Arma. I know all my gaming friends from those times never got into Arma because it's more based on big scale military simulation and rather clunky and buggy, while those other classic tac shooters were more counter terrorist / small scale and less clunky games. I'm 100% confident that there still is a market for those type of games, I guess Takedown and Ground Branch will have to prove it.
  6. Talk away in a thread that is about the subject. This thread is about improving PvP, not co-op or SP :) So people who want to improve or move a gamemode forward are suddenly whiners? Come on.... And you give the answer yourself: people are talking about it because it's virtually not present in Arma. So we want to discuss ways on how to improve this. If you're not interested in PvP that's all fine, but why keep coming back to this thread? We're not suggesting to dumb down or change Arma gameplay across the board, so simply don't join PvP servers in Arma 3 if you think Arma should be about SP and co-op only.
  7. A few days ago I actually sent a PM to the OP about this, and he agreed in changing the thread title to help the thread along. He posted a few pages ago that he was going to change the title (but users don't have the rights) so a moderator asked for a direct PM (see: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?134126-Will-Bohemia-let-ARMA-finally-compete-with-Call-of-Duty-and-Battlefield&p=2154385&viewfull=1#post2154385). But I guess that never happened :) What he actually did, and I did this before, is changing the title of the first post of this thread. Look back at post #1, the post title is changed to "How to improve Arma's PVP MP to attract more players!!". Always misleading, the edit title function which doesn't edit the threads title :P So maybe a moderator can be so kind to change it to "How to improve Arma's PVP MP to attract more players!!" as per the new #1 post title by OP. :)
  8. Why is it so hard to understand that it could be possible to implement an official PvP gamemode which is better accessible and a more fluid experience compared to the current PvP that is offered at launch? We're not talking about changing your co-op or SP experience, or your experience when playing Project Reality or some other modification. We're not talking about changing or dumbing down Arma gameplay across the board, we're just talking about ways to improve the PvP side of things. And btw, it would be time that they fixed the clunkyness issues that have been in the Arma series for the past decade ;) That's really not the point of this thread. The point is how the PvP aspect of Arma could be improved to make it more fluid and accessible and thus "compete" with those game as a valid alternative for people who love PvP. We're not talking about dumbing down anything that makes this military game so special. Take for example Project Reality. It's based on the Arma 2 framework and everything that makes it an tactical military shooter AND it's PvP. So we are, or at least I am, talking about stuff that can support the PvP scene right at launch. For example offering accessible and heavily tested official PvP gamemodes at launch, maybe an easy system to track down your friends, maybe official USA/EU etc. servers at launch which have PvP maps 24/7, etc. etc. Arma doesn't own shit in the PvP arena. I believe you're missing the whole point, nobody is talking about implementing arcade gameplay or changing the current gameplay. We're discussing ways to improve the PvP aspect of the Arma series, not about changing the gameplay to be the same as BF3. And for the love of god, please let someone change the thread title to "How to improve Arma's PVP MP to attract more players" as dragon suggested because people really seem to be missing the whole point...

    Friend system

What about having either an in-game or external BIS developed software to friend with other players and to see who is playing on which server and join them. Every profile you create in Arma is a "soldier account" in this system. This is especially aimed at the idea that PvP might also get some extra focus in Arma 3. This way it's easy to join your battle mates in PvP matches. Make it a central clan/squad system where clans/communities can present themselves and clan/squad/community members can join their group with automatically adding tags etc. (instead of the squad url etc). Think along the lines of the BF3 webbrowser friend system. I know you can use Xfire etc. but I'm talking about an integrated system where you can easily add people who you play with in a server and stuff like that. No need to exchange xfire user names in side chat, no need for people to install 3rd party program etc. An easy way to keep track and find your (new) Arma buddies. Because to be fair, in this area Arma is still living in the stone age :p Thoughts?
  10. Well, please explain to me why at least 30% of the people I know playing BF3 are actually hardcore/serious game fanatics but play BF3 because there is nothing similar on offer in the tac shooter genre. At least not anything that lets you easily get into a PvP match without downloading a shitload of mods, fiddle with beta-patches or any other issues the general Arma player has to go through. Based on the opinions from the people I know who used to play games like the original rainbow six and ghost recon it actually IS the clunkyness that's holding them back from Arma + the numerous custom things you need to do before you get the game ready to join a server (for example downloading 3rd party programs likes SU, finding out how the - sorry - user unfriendly SU interface works, downloading a shitload of mods to join one single server if it's not password protected etc).
  11. Nobody is asking for this. We're just looking for ways how the PvP element in Arma can get some attention as well. Not true. I have played Raven Shield PvP on the same maps for years. Every match was good or even better as the previous one. The same match over and over again never got old. And I'm not even talking about gamemodes with objectives. Add objectives to the mix and you might play it till next Arma installment comes out. Besides, how would you even know its impossible if you only play arma, il-2 and dcs series ;) :p hehe

    Friend system

Huh? I'm proposing a system where you can easily track down the people you know from previous gaming experiences or in real life and to join the servers they're playing on. Don't really see how this creates isolated "elite groups" or any hostility against players who don't have their friends list full of people??? It's just a way to keep track of the people you regularly play with, to see what they are doing and also to easily add people you played with in a random public server for future reference. If anything, it would help solo players to connect easier with previous battle buddies in pub servers. Besides, Arma in general is a pretty closed system with lots of clans/communities doing their own thing with their own set of mods and private servers, I don't really see why a build in friends system would be the cause of something like that.
  13. This thread isn't about copying game play or "dumbing down" Arma or simply comparing it to the more arcade shooters. It's about the player vs player element in those games that might work within the realistic setting of the Arma verse if BIS puts extra effort/focus on the PvP aspect right at launch of Arma 3. Mods like Project Reality actually do work in the Arma setting. But it's not easy for people, years after release, to download a mod to get some kind of PvP experience similar to BF3 (in a general sense). Stuff like this could be implemented officially right at launch to get an active PvP scene.

Steamworks, add it in or not?

I voted NO, but I do think there should be some kind of built in friends system where you can easily join your friends game etc. which is also part of Steamworks features.

    Friend system

*sigh* no I personally don't need it (for Arma coop). But it would be nice if BIS will use some of the basic friend stuff that has been in most games for the past decade. And if they want Arma to be more accessible for PvP players a system like this could help a lot. Why has everything to be so black and white... And yeah, the few weeks that I played BF3 I made use of the friend system, it's rather hard to keep track of 30 different friends all from different communities, real life, other clans and with different languages, who are all using their own voice servers etc. If you want to play for 20 minutes it's rather easy with a friend system to see who is playing what, on what server etc. and quickly join them. But god forbid if we make things easy for people or if we move things forward.

    Friend system

Oh sorry, if that is the case I hope a moderator can fix my mistake :) Although it's not really Arma 3 game related, but more something separate from the game. Might fit the -Modding&tools section in the community wishes topic.

We also had this for Raven Shield, although it was just custom maps so small amounts of data. But you'll have to keep in mind that once someone downloaded ACE from a server, they don't have to download it all over again when joining another server. So the bandwidth load will probably be spread rather evenly over all public servers running the ACE mod, because the players are also spread across these servers. So it's fair to assume that a certain percentage of people that join your server got their ACE mod from a different server and don't need to use any of your bandwidth.
  18. IMO it's not unrealistic, BIS makes money from the franchise. It's just a matter of priorities. Administration and updating can be done by specific community members just like forum moderators are also voluntarily helping out (AFAIK), so BIS only has to pay for hiring the servers (make it 5 EU, 5 US and 5 ?? servers). I think the increased revenue from Arma 2: CO sales since DayZ could probably even cover these expenses. They could do this for the first 6 or 12 months after release. Raven Shield did the same thing, there were a few official EU and US servers for at least the first year (or even longer)? Yes, it costs money, but so does the development of the game. You just have to look at it as an integral part of the game development and marketing strategy.
  19. I like the idea of stock PvP game modes in Arma 3 and a server browser to view PvP servers/missions. PvP can really work, look at A2: Project Reality and AAS (although I never played AAS myself). If something like Project Reality (or a simpler version, so just a mission with same kind of parameters) would be an official gamemode I can see how it will be played more, even if its just by the regular Arma customers. IMO the focus has been too much on SP and coop in previous releases, time to give attention to the PvP element as well and see how it turns out. Hell, you could even make a persistent soldier/character PvP system with stats like total games played, total games won, top 3 favorite weapons etc. (NO I'm not talking about unlocks, kill counts or whatever!). Make it possible to friend with other characters and see who is playing where like the BF3 webbased server browser. Easy to join your battle mates in PvP matches. Central clan/squad system where clans/communities can present themselves and clan/squad/community members can join with automatic adding tags (instead of the squad url etc). Because there are also lots of good features in "those" type of games which moves technology forward. Arma feels more like being in the stone age if you think about how there is no friend system, no basic persistent soldier info (just for the fun), etc. Really, not everything from those games is your worst enemy.

Steam Workshop is also interesting, because it's an accessible way to present the average customer with custom content. Yes, I know it has to be far more than that (match mods with servers you join, auto downloading etc) but I'm just talking about how to present it to average Joe not active on forums and the like.
  21. Hello all, I'm pretty new to editing for Arma. Did some basic SP stuff but now I'm working on a simple(?) objective based TDM mission. What I would like to do: * an object on the map is the objective for both teams, for example a laptop or something else that is portable * when a team picks it up they have to drop it off at a drop off point which is randomly generated within a certain marker area and with a minimum set distance from the current pickup location. * all teams will see the generated drop off location on their map (a marker) * if the member carrying the laptop gets killed he drops it and the laptop location is marked on the map. * if someone else picks it up there is a new drop off point generated (the old one is removed from the map, the new one is added for all teams) so no one can camp the previous one While I'm at it, I would like the mission to have multiple rounds. So no respawn during a round, but once the objective is completed by one of the teams, there is a message "Team red won the round" and a new round starts with some kind of delay (about 1 minute) so team members can quickly go over their strategy before the next round starts. After set amount of rounds the team with most rounds wins (or draw if it's even) and the mission ends. Don't know if this possible, otherwise it's also ok to just restart the mission after every "round". I got the basic stuff done (put 8 west and 8 east units, added starting location flags etc) but now it comes down to scripts/triggers and I'm sweating. Checked some scripts but didn't immediately found what I was looking for. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction or help out!

    Automatic Mod Downloading

As mentioned before the biggest problem is with multiplayer. There is no easy way to join a server from the in-game browser and automatically activate or download the right addons. Anyone who joins our server, and is not from our community, has the wrong addons and is kicked. Always, 100% of the people. Sure, we have our own Six Updater preset and manuals on our website to explain people how to download the required addons. But if you just try to join a server via the in-game browser it will almost never work. For those people who are not in a community or clan, there should be a system to easily join a server running addons. Manually searching for addons on Armaholic to join a random server isn't going to work and never has worked (for those people). Fully agree.
