Performance is still terrible even after todays patch....
Matt International replied to P0ci's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
I could try to explain it better than the article linked above by Jiltedjock but would probably fail, so I would just read that if you wish to understand what's going on some more. -

Just because people seem to be misunderstanding the -exthreads= command... https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3_Startup_Parameters#exThreads -exthreads=7 does not mean the game is running 7 threads. Look at the table, the decimal figure is representative of binary values within a table that determine which operations get moved into seperate threads. All these guides that people blindly follow have a lot to answer for. -
Default settings are chosen for various reasons. The value by default is where the developer thinks it should be set for a computer that runs the game well. The fact that lowering this value may help you if your computer is under performing has no bearing on whether that is the best value for everyone or the engine itself.

https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/arma2.cfg Clearly, this page refers to Arma 2 but it stands to reason that it applies to Arma 3 for the most part.

Will we ever see a stable multiplayer running at 50-60 fps?
Matt International replied to Holden93's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I believe it does based on years of playing this series and a vague recollection of reading it somewhere in these forums some years ago. -

Whether you see it as a netcode problem or not depends on your view of how things are being handled. If you prioritise framerate over accurate representation of the situation across clients, this results in moments where you can be killed by someone who no longer has a line of sight on you from your perspective, while on their screen you haven't got round that wall yet. Similarly, someone can kill you before you even make it round a corner on your screen because the server has predicted your movement and placed you in direct view on another players client. This of course does not factor in bullet penetration. Conversely, if you want hard synchronisation across clients so everyone has a truely accurate impression of the situation around them, the only way to do this is to limit their client in some way based on information being sent and received by the server. How synchronisation is handled is a design choice based on priorities and sacrifices...until we all have supercomputers and an internet infrastructure that transmits large amounts of data instantaneously. -

Matt International replied to Holden93's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Not the only reason perhaps but synchronisation plays a big factor no doubt. You've got 64 people from all around the world transmitting and receiving data about bullet trajectories, unit positions and so on. Without synchronisation someone could be an unknown distance from where you see them and ultimately your bullets will miss. Why does this reduce your rendering framerate? Well, that's down to how the engine handles what gets drawn based on the information at hand. If it doesn't have all the information required, it may be waiting for it before rendering. Reduce the need for sync and you get horrible warping/teleporting effects amongst other things. This is a very simplistic view of it and one based on no first hand knowledge of the code within the engine, so take it with a pinch of salt if you wish. -
While both infuriating and comical due to the change of key, being able to throw grenades without cycling through fire modes was needed. Some of my fondest memories in alpha are of people swearing closely followed by loud shouts of "GRENADE" and "SORRY". However, am I the only one who misses the throw power from length of holding the action? Bring it back please.

My only complaint- can't place charges on vehicles!

1 min 30 secs into that video reminds me of this... -
This mod has just blown my mind. Quite simply stunning so far. Kudos, good sir. Edit: PlaywithSix gave me a checksum error on the decal template. It suggests this can be caused by many things (AV/firewall...) but this is the only time I have ever experienced this issue across many mods with SU and PwS.

Bohemia Interactive's ambitions are always set too high.
Matt International replied to sayjimwoo's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I'm not here to argue my good man. I'm not here to tell BI how to code their product either. I feel many peoples frustration over various performance issues but these discussions just get drawn out into personal attacks and the whole debate becomes futile. -

I shouldn't be surprised at how this discussion has turned into another generic performance row... This is all you need to know... Anyway, we all know this, yet these arguments appear time and time again. GHz is king for this engine, it's just not where technology is headed for many reasons. Heat dissipation and electromigration probably the biggest players. -

I know this is completely off topic but I can't resist. Your reference reminded me of this... I just had to share it. -

Arma 3 Engine - What would have been a better option and what can we learn?
Matt International replied to squirrel0311's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Could it be done? Probably with a lot of work. What would be the result? Most likely a very poor performing game. I haven't read all of this thread but the key to understand is a lot of the things Arma does are not simple "if you push Q make the chopper go up" instructions, or "when LMB is pressed detect crosshair position and register hit". All of these things are calculated based on models of the "real world" and eat processor time. My apologies if this has been outlined already. -
Question everything ;) Forcing single core/thread operation is a valid test in certain circumstances, that's why the commands exist. I mainly pose the question because if you are going to perform an investigation into anything, you need to present all the facts if the result is to have any meaning. Selective use of information can make points seem more or less valid. If this is a server with no start up commands, does adding any change the results? If it has commands, what happens when you remove them? If I was in the position of performing these tests, this is how I would approach it. I guess my hope is that something is being hidden, though I suspect this is just how it works by default. AI in one thread and it all breaks down when it tries to spread the load. Shame. As has been stated, some things cannot be multithreaded so easily.
-
On the face of it, this does not look good. My question is, what startup parameters did you use? I cannot see any reference to this so for all we know, you could have forced single core operation.

[SP/MP] Dynamic Whole Map ArmA3 Missions by SaOk
Matt International replied to SaOk's topic in ARMA 3 - USER MISSIONS
Awesome news my man. Though as others have said, you should really take a break sometime, it is Christmas after all ;p I can appreciate how when you have motivation and ideas, along with the success of bringing those to your project, it's kind of hard. -
[SP/MP] Dynamic Whole Map ArmA3 Missions by SaOk
Matt International replied to SaOk's topic in ARMA 3 - USER MISSIONS
Forgive me if this has been discussed in the previous 100+ pages. I have scanned the last 5 or so as they are most current. Nice to see this still being improved after7 months or so also. My curiosity is about the MP version of these missions. I've been looking for a nice dynamic and diverse MP mission for my friends and I to play and this really does look good in so many ways, bringing something else to the table that many others do not. My main question is this... Do you still plan to work on the MP mission? I notice that you really are working hard on this mission but it mainly seems to be SP updates/improvements. While I experienced some real show stopping problems for long term gameplay (the truck for base building exploded on spawn in), I hold out hope to one day see the MP version completed as it really does look quite amazing. Kudos, on your work so far, I am sure you have high ambitions for this project and from my brief time with this mission it can be seen and felt. I should point out that I was not running the DEV build when I tried this mission and did notice the message saying DEV build was required. I was also hosting this within my game, not on a dedicated server if that may also cause problems? -
Merry Xmas, BIS!
Matt International replied to AveryTheKitty's topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
Last I heard (or read), expansion wasn't slowing, if anything it was accelerating, but it's been some time since I delved into proper science reading. So in the spirit of bah humbugness, Merry "distorted by modern religions and modified by capitalists as a way of getting you to spend money on pointless things the person you are giving it to doesn't want and is so far removed from what the original celebrations were about" day. Seriously, though, take the time to enjoy the company of your friends and family. -
I disagree, it's far from perfect. I would call it a compromise. Do you really think you'd die from 5 shots to the hand or foot? Maybe some hours later from blood loss if it is not attended to. I think you all just need to wait and see where this goes. I am hopeful that from what I have seen of the improved ballistics and penetration modelling that we will see various levels of body armour with appropriate penetrations. I think many people are frustrated because they consider they are buying a "finished" product, but anyone who has any long term experience of this series should be aware of how the game is continually improved and has never been "finished" when released...but this is another debate for another thread.

Yep, Merry Christmas one and all! A particularly big thank you to all the BI staff and modding community for their hard work in 2013. Have a virtual beer on me. :beeeers: -
Hello all, My suggestion relates to the XBox 360. Which I hope will see this title. I know the website claims it will be released on "next gen" (what is "next gen" anyway?...er, that's a rhetorical question for any smart alec's) consoles but I'm well aware that this genre is very PC oriented due to the command system and heavy use of key commands which can be difficult to adapt to a joypad. That said, I owned Operation Flashpoint on PC and Xbox and found the adaptation pretty good. I missed Arma as I got fed up of throwing money at my PC everytime I wanted a new game. Which brings me to my point... ...I have a USB keyboard connected to my 360 as I hate using a joypad to navigate an onscreen keyboard and the plug in to your joypad thingy, well, it cost 4 times as much as a USB keyboard and it's all small 'n' fiddly. Anyway, is there any possibility of allowing people to use a keyboard on the XBox360? I know not everyone would have this luxury and appreciate that the game is very close to release. Maybe a patch later on or an optional download on the live marketplace (provided you don't do what EA do and charge the earth for features that should be in the game in the first place, grrrr). Well, that's my thought anyway. Doesn't seem that hard to do, but I'm not a software programmer. Toodle pip.
