  1. If I had a Euro for every half-wit who says "BIS should use the Crysis engine, I hear its pretty lolololol!!!1111", oh the life I'd lead...

Well, either that, or assuming that India is the world... Pot calling the kettle black an' all that.

    The Far East Thread

Seems to me that a lot of Indian military equipment is either bought or licensed from abroad - aircraft, tanks, some infantry weapons etc.

    How to throw grenades?

I wish a slightly more intuitive way of aiming grenades had been implemented. The Rainbox Six system whereby holding down the mouse button would yield a pop up box informing you how hard you were throwing them was a good idea.

    Design a computer...

I should probably reiterate that I'm not very pro-Mac. Rather, I find stupid arguments against Macs to be as annoying as stupid arguments for them. They are a nice idea and the hardware is right for those who want them. Sure they cost more than they're probably worth. Sure their platforms are subjected to quite stringent controls (and it is quite closed in a lot of ways). But in a strange sense, I understand why they do it, and I can see why some people buy into it. I just wouldn't do it myself. Besides, we all know that FreeBSD fanboys are by far the most annoying...

    Design a computer...

And? So what? A lot of essential parts of Linux were implemented by the likes of IBM or Novell (to name two of the large number of examples). Of course they did it to benefit themselves (I know, it's crazy right... companies doing things to increase their own profit margin) , but who cares as long as their work is now in the public domain? I think you'll find that every successful open source project has had millions (if not billions) sunk it to it by multiple corporate sponsors. In fact, that's why it's good. I have installed Darwin on a non-Mac computer. Their GUI is not open source, and Mac OS X basically = Darwin + their own frontend. Again, there's nothing wrong with using a proprietary front-end on an open source back end as long as they contribute whatever they did to open source part back to the community. I don't see what that has to do with open source but whatever. Apple's restriction of software released on it's platforms is a way of guaranteeing quality. Yes, it's a rather cynical way of doing it, but I can't really blame them. A Unix variant using virtual desktops? No way! It's called marketing. UNIX/Linux vendors do it too. No big deal. If they didn't do it, people like you would complain that they lack basic Unix features.
  7. I think they should port it to GNU Hurd.

    Design a computer...

Get your facts right. Apple is a big open source supporter - the underlying Unix system of Mac OSX (Darwin) and the Webkit engine used in a wide variety of open source browsers (e.g. Chrome) are but two examples of things that they've opened to the community. Large chunks of their OS have come from various parts of the *nix community, particularly from BSD, and to the best of my knowledge they have their employees involved with the various projects that they depend on. In fact, I really don't see why Apple and Open Source are automatically enemies. I know plenty of people who use Macs as a platform for the open source software they run. Furthermore, Apple is first and foremost a hardware company, and most of the software they develop is there to facilitate a pleasant hardware-software integration experience on the machines they make. Mac OS X is probably the main software product that Apple has for their laptops/desktops. People still want the nice hardware-software integration that Mac OS X provides, so Linux really isn't a threat to it (besides, if you want to run Linux, you're hardly going to buy a Mac). Beyond that, Apple depends too much on open source involvement, as does any company that gets involved in the *nix market. If they declared war on open source, they'd find themselves in a world of shit in rather rapid order. Apple doesn't really compete with Microsoft because their marketing strategy is based around them being the trendy underdog. Ferrari and Ford both make cars, but you don't see Ferrari competing in Ford's market.
  9. The Core i7 will be faster than the Phenom... but there's no point in getting the 950 model... get the 920 and overclock.

    Delta force game series

Except for the fact that in DF2 and other earlier Delta Forces, when you activated your scope, it appeared in the top right hand corner of your screen allowing you to run around as normal and snipe at the same time. Having played many of them, I think the defining moment of them as far as I'm concerned was during one of the last missions in Delta Force 3, where I shot down an airborne C-130 with a single magazine of an M4 - fun, but absolutely ridiculous.

    Taliban running out of ammunition

There's a big difference between sucking up to someone, and being dependent on them.
  12. Link Not exactly a surprise, there was talk of it happening since... well, around the time they adopted UCP. There's been trials of it side-by-side with an improved UCP variant for the past few months, obviously it fared well out in Afghanistan. In the humble opinion of this seasoned armchair commando, the Multicam appears to do the 'blending in with everything' act better than UCP, and given that the UK and some other countries are adopting it, or variants of it, it will probably cut down friendly fire incidents somewhat. EDIT: Apparently at the moment it's only being adopted for troops in Afghanistan, but it seems odd that they wouldn't eventually switch the rest of the troops over if it proves successful.

Last time I checked, the UK doesn't have to call in US troops to maintain power.

    Taliban running out of ammunition

When you say 'legitimate government', is this the one the Russians killed during the invasion, or was it one of the seemingly endless list of others who briefly seized and held power in the years before?
  15. Looks like a Mandriva ripoff. China recently 'developed' a secure operating system for its military and government computers, turned out they based it on an older version of FreeBSD.

    Taliban running out of ammunition

Sounds like someone has been playing too much Empire Total War... Most experts on such matters generally agree that the nature of war is changing. Proxy fights between super powers through smaller nations was the first change, now we're increasingly seeing state sponsored terrorism on one hand, and the privatization of warfare in the West on the other.

    Busy Military

So? If America doesn't give the guns or tanks, China or Russia will. If no one else gives them guns, they'll just make their own. It's like when people protested against the manufacturer of Hellfire missiles in Belfast in Norther Ireland, because they were supplying the Israeli military. There appeared to be some underlying insinuation that if it weren't for that one particular type of missile, that there would be no problems in the West Bank. I don't buy into the politics of American gun nuts, but I definitely agree with them when they say "Guns don't kill people, people do"

Bye bye UCP - US Army adopts Multicam

It's very easy for a manufacturer to take pics that shows their camo in a perfect backdrop. What's far more pertinent is not how good it is in ideal environments, but rather how it holds up overall in all environments both ideal and unideal. There was a good video on the BBC website where they interviewed a British colonel about the MTP adoption. He said of MTP - "It's not going to be the best camouflage for every situation, but rather it's designed so that it's never the wrong camouflage for any situation."

US Army HMMWV program is dead.

Damn, I was routing for the Moon Buggy - Primary advantages - insurgents will be too confused by it's appearance to know that they need to shoot at it. If they had done that, it would have been the most masterful piece of military sabotage the Americans ever managed to pull off :p

Bye bye UCP - US Army adopts Multicam

As far as I know, some senators threw their weight in behind it, claimed that it was putting men's lives in danger and so on. Given that these are ultimately the people who sign the cheques, and their track record on pulling the plug on projects which have had billions sank into them, I really wouldn't put it beyond them to kill UCP on a whim. I hope I didn't give the impression that I'm some sort of airsoft kiddie - my interest was moreso in raising awareness for people working on US-related mods.

    Very Unprofessional Assassins

From the photos I've seen, the counterfeiters forged the old style of passport, which were phased out almost five years ago in favor of a newer style with a pile of additional anti-counterfeit features. However, there are plenty of people (myself included) who still have the old style of passport - bare in mind that we have 10-year passports so there are some that are going to valid up to about late 2015. However, I wouldn't be surprised given this embarrassment if the Irish government, and indeed others, force people with older passports to 'upgrade' as per se.

Of course, this means that the ACU units that BIS is making for OA are probably obsolete now :P
