</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"> "I think its an amazing thing for any game to stay fresh for a full year in the computer game world. The only games I can think of that people played more than a year were: - WarCraft 2 which last like a year or a little bit longer with the exp pack - Civilization 1 which lasted like 8 million years - Half Life which last 2 years I think" <span id='postcolor'> Oh? Well ppl in the flight sim community have been playing some games for a long time: Falcon 3.0 since the 80's (that ladder went on for ever), Falcon 4.0 (since 98), Jane's ATF/Fighters Anthology (from 97 still running on Hyperlobby!. Not to mention MSCFS and its updates. Just because there isn't a lobby, a lot of older players still use direct connect MP because once you know a decent group of people you get the type of games you want, with no cheats or whiners . Not to mention offline games (yes, I still have Tomb Raider 1 & 2, Steel Panthers II/III, Syndicate Wars, TA, X-Com Interceptor on my HDD running under XP). After all, what we are 'discussing' here is not necessarily the quality of games, only the attention span of the average player (ooooh.. look.. a game with new texture and lighting effects). As an example, I managed to pick up a copy of Flanker 2.0 a month after it came out for Å1.00 because it was returned to Gamestation as "too difficult" and no-one there wanted it. You may have noticed a trend over the last 2-5 years to reduce the display area in game shops of PC games to almost nothing, and expanding the space for console games and videos/DVDs. New PC games are not always available in these shops (as the one copy they buy sells and they don't re-order). We have lost Jane's, Microprose, DiD as developers, and only MS (pah) and SSI seem to be around. What can I say? Waiting for Lock-On MAC to be finally released, but enjoying OFP:R for challenge, difficulty, fun and ALL vehicles. Also, I'm sick of WWII games, especially ones where you get to be Germans or US only. The only other FPS I look forward to is from another bunch of Czechs, Vietcong (www.pterodon.cz ) which looks like great terrain for the type of sneaky antics asians like me love to play in

I actually thought Red Hammer was better from the FPS point of view, and the layered complexity of the 3 stage missions was great. The original campaign was really an extended tutorial up to a point and did have some annoying "get back to the linear script" bits (like when your team dies in the forest and you have to e & e to the resistance camp), but was better from a multi-vehicle and air point of view. Resistance is better than both and balances a good deal of things, not the least being to get a release out before codemasters cripples it

Viktor because he's the most real and has more than 1 emotion (and looks like a young Ed Harris!, though I quite like Lukin and Gastovski. Least favourite of all time.. Armstrong .. whining little maggot, stereotypical dumb rookie who gets to the top... don't you get tired of Horatio Alger stories?

Why should a game stop people playing something as immersive, variable and well-supported as OFP+®? Well, because the console types have no long-term memory Personally, I play many games online depending on what I want to do, I still fly many old flight sims and FPS, and continue to do so as long as players have an arena to meet and contribute add-ons, missions etc. I think BiS have shown a lot of support for the people playing, from great people down to whiners, and I think its sad that the quick-fix ppl migrate to BF1942. Personally, I'm sick of WWII as I'm old enough to remember the contributions made by ppl other than the US and I enjoy the massive flexibility of the engine in this game. This was the first game to truly integrate real weapons, FPS style with flight sims (even in its limited aspect) and vehicle control, and to some degree role-playing and RTS with resistance. It overwhelms arcade games, but then, we see a lot more players of games on consoles than on PC's don't we! I think the migration will take care of the 'buy-a-new-game-a-month' crowd and leave a core of serious, happy players, who don't mind the work in creating (or supporting) something worthwhile. Whether it survives online is our choice in both playing and building new stuff, rather than expecting a producer or developer to do it for us. Nothing has been as fulfilling as playing this game, but then, i'm european I see a lot more life in this yet... how many ppl left HL before CS was created? Just because something is popular and sells well, doesn't make it a good game... conversely some of the best games have never sold well or attracted a huge following. I'll take gameplay over graphics every time and I think this has a lot of room for add-ons and expansions, maybe a reworked core-engine etc... but the feel and direction of the game is right. BiS have tried to make something outside the genre barriers and succeeded in spite of its low marketing and lack of zombies for the kiddies. My only regret is that BiS knuckled in to the pressure to change true NATO to US troops after 3 years development, slightly redressed by Resistance. In PC gamers recent survey of top selling games, OFP is not mentioned, despite its clear genius.. the top seller in the UK.. The Sims..

..but Lukin in true euro/slav fashion is not switching "sides". He works with the resistance and US "advisors" i.e. Gastovski to stop Guba.. who is acting on his own orders and not in the interests of Rhodina. The voice acting wasn't so bad, at least there wasn't that whining you get from armstrong in cold war crisis

check the OFPediting centre and avon lady for guides to sound conversion and implementation. I use DbPoweramp to convert and you have to script the sounds in your description.ext. Look for Lustypooh's old guide. http://www.ofpec.com/

1. When in front of a window or fence, going to "v" iron sights/scope causes the fence or window frame to be offset, alignement or what? If you can shoot through in low zoom, you get blocked in hi zoom (v). This has always been present from v1.0. Its not refraction as there is no glass in the window 2. Strela paa file missing. 3. Tank garage buildings ladder still causes freeze/crash. 4. If loading to crate/truck any ammo type with two variants (grenade/smoke e.g. ) you cannot switch to the 2nd type if the first type goes to zero. i.e. if putting all grenades in a truck, you need to pick up another smoke shell before being able to put them in truck. 5. Still bad clipping detection, so you can run/fall through fences/guardrails on rooftops and buildings. 6. Getting in a vehicle doesnt allow you to switch seats or command other vehicles in your group unless you get in as commander (in tanks) first then switch seats after issueing orders. 7. Vehicle HUD/radar missing for some vehicles except for commander. 8. Balcony ledges (clipping) seems too high, if standing in the city hall balconies, you cannot point gun downwards more than 10 degrees or so before getting a ricochet. I'm not THAT short! cargo

Also: A) Picked up a strela in one mission (where you blow the bridge) and there is no PAA file for the ammo (bad path?). B) Clipping. On the rooftop of the office/town hall in the capital, you can inadvertently walk THROUGH the wrought iron railings, resulting in a nasty fall to your death.. shades of tomb raider I love the balconies for popping up and sniping, but its impossible to get close to them and aim lower, the ledge always blocks the shot.. did i shrink in height or something? C) for window frames, fences, railings etc, whenever you switch to iron or scoped sight views, there is an offset resulting in the "railing" moving to block what you were aiming at.. after shuffling sideways to get a view, switching to "V" is not in parity! Sorry grammar yoda degeneration, this bug was in the original game. Dont blame refraction, there is no glass in the windows! I love the island at the bottom where you can ford the water as in the ctf, and thanks for putting 2 decent runways on the map, even if one is a tiny islet. Anyone worked out how to get that fire effect (as in one cutscene) for the burning vehicles?

Resistance's north american release date changed
cargo replied to theavonlady's topic in NEWS DISCUSSION
I've always assumed it was a way of free bug checking so that the US don't whine when they get their copy as it will be patched or close to it. Bear in mind, we had version 1.0 for a long while before the US even got a copy, then when 1.2 was released, we didnt get a patch to that level for at least a month... so my squad (98% of whom are in the US) were playing online without me <sob>. At least you in the US don't have to wait over two years to join in the fun with the rest of europe, like in 1939 -
The other thing to remember, is that cheaters tend towards a low attention span. They get bored quickly and move on to something else, or don't play when the game is not to their taste. Build online games requireing more strategic play and objectives that cannot be achieved with rapid fire and no reload time.. They usually disco when faced with anything more than a DM or CTF. Alternatively, we could all wait for them to grow up

1) Fix the building clipping problems (thicker walls) and collision detection so you dont get jammed in dorways and have to go prone to get out. 2) Peek/lean movements to look round corners/objects (the sight view is still offset when looking through windows with bar/frames) 3) More combined tactics ability. This game makes its mark on use of air, land, sea vehicles... it cant compete on the foot soldier alone field (a la Rainbow six, Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon etc) and stay a winner. Maps need to include AT LEAST 2 flat airfields for team dogfight from takeoff in planes. More planes than the CAS types (transport, bombers and fighters) ... the imbalance can be corrected between soldiers and aircraft by making soldiers hard to spot (the manportable sams are a great defense). 4) An easy "mission objective" allocation in the editor for targets.. scripting the destruction of 20 targets with grouped triggers can be a chore. 5) Real NATO troops and equipment, not just American 6) Easier implementation and removal of mods that doesnt require uninstall/reinstall and reformat, but with a checker to stop cheat trainers. 7) Rivers/lakes you can cross, snow, proper destruction of buildings, glass in the windows, mud when it rains, dust when its dry, slower movement in Gorse/heather and lots more low vegetation . 8) Not requiring Gamespy or dedicated servers to find good, honest players

mmmm.. Apart from Blackhawk Down (excellent book) I wouldn't rate any of those in the "real" sense of war movies.. way too Hollywood, though Three Kings is very funny. The best IMO: Das Boot (directors cut in the original german) Battle of Britain Cross of Iron (the original not the remake) Patton The Great Escape Tora Tora Tora Aces High Aliens (yes.. a vietnam movie thinly disguised as SF) Apocalypse now (redux) Kagemusha (Akira Kurasawa) I could go on, and it's all a matter of taste, but I wouldn't cite the majority of recent Hollywood attempts to capture a teenage (U.S.) audience. Ever wonder why there are no Falklands movies? ... oh.. the Americans weren't there. I don't dislike Americans, believe me, just Hollywood fantasy. BTW Top Gun fans, the F-5 Freedom Fighter (the "mig-28" in the movie.. lol) can kick the everloving pants off the F-14 in a dogfight with a decent pilot. How did the aggressor squadron ever get sucked into that. "Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"

after you have put your player on the map, you get more options for side, one of which is "empty".. ! then choose the class, e.g. AH1, T80 whatever... RTFM..

Bear in mind what has happened with many OTHER games companies: 1) Ship a fairly good but expensive product 2) Ignore posts and e-mails to support about bugs 3) Never release a patch or any tools 4) After 1-2 years release a bugfix as an expensive add-on pack 5) Company gets bought out by someone big and not interested in the game and the coders all have to code html for food. BiS have constantly shown support and put in a lot of time and effort in developing new patches and add-ons, which I suspect they wanted to put in the original game but Codemasters wanted to ship ASAP.. A lot of what marek says is right, they could release a version that is as complex to use as building the game from scratch, requires a high level of knowledge (see cheat modders run away in droves) and makes online play become a matter of how many mods you have installed to play.. oh i have to download a 36 MB mod to play here. OFP is a flagship product for them and YES they dont want to see a lot of hard work ripped off. I find it ironic that marek was trying to explain logically why there is no free tool right now when all of the offensive complaints have come from certain types of gamers. The alternative is to keep asking BiS to build the stuff you want in a patch or expansion pack..

That is a nice thought, if the movements of the players from rogue spear etc were introduced allowing crouch and peek. Personally, my biggest wish (apart from being able to set the uniform/side to something other than US/Soviet) is for an Island with several runway equipped bases, so that both sides can take off and defend/dogfight/attack proper airbases... that and a scoring system that would allow "make this item a mission objective" without resorting to 100's of triggers and counters. We will have to see how the "resistance" upgrade and the promised tools turn out to modify an almost perfect game into something that will attract sim pilots as well as CS/HL/Quake/R6 players. All in all, I want the Virtual Battlefield version promised to the USMC

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound that way.. i had just had another dose of certain members of the US in chat lobbies insulting the rest of the world. On top of the Hollywood tendency to rewrite history so that 1) It has more explosions and 2) Any achievement in history was done by the US I was feeling a bit grumpy. That's off-topic anyway. The release date of any supported tools and patches will always be vague if the coders are good (and the publishers aren't interfering), because you want to test it as much as possible before you release it. As far as I know, the only patch that will ever fix all the bugs in any game, allow all players of the game to do what THEY want and cope with the demands of everyones hardware differences is 'wishing.exe'. At times one has to be patient.

Absolutely, have to agree on this. BiS have shown CONSTANT interest in the opinions of the forums and have responded to queries pretty much most of the time. The tools and patches are always worth waiting for and considering the Czech-ered background (sic) is a breath of fresh air for the gaming community. In perspective, look at all the game releases from big publishers and designers with NO SUPPORT WHATEVER who are english speaking (RAGE in particular), that ignore constant requests for patches or fixes, don't release any info to allow mods or editing, and just "publish and be damned". How many games can you name that have the Project coders in forums that listen and respond to the queries of the gamers? As for WWII i'm sick of it.. everyone and their dog (MoH etc. etc.) is making one, just so some Americans can come online and "save us europeans" once again as has been said so often, and doesn't need repeating.. oh too late.. On another note, it's sad Codemasters seems to be taking the credit in some quarters for this game (particularly in the english press) as BiS have worked really hard to give something unique and wonderful to the gaming world, and continue to do so with their support. coop missions without the d*amn seagul
cargo replied to fsaexample's topic in OFP : MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
try most of my missions with respawn, coop, dm, ctf, some even with respawn with original weapon set all you need is a hotmail or msn passport http://communities.msn.co.uk/CargoHangar/_whatsnew.msnw or if my icq is up look in my shared files icq 38805245 if i hadnt got this d*amn job i would build more but then i wouldnt be able to afford playing online so much -
this is true, i have a 56k and have hosted 4-6 ppl with no problem depending mostly on their net upload rate, i have seen people with cable with worse net connections than a good 56k, but they assume because they have cable its fast. I always use the p key in game to check.
-
check what type of ping you get, try to go with players at 200ms or less. Lower your firewall settings to low Gamespy blows goats on toast, its constantly sending background info and doubling the ping times. On my poor old 56k i can host 8 ppl in the states from the uk in flight sims, 6 ppl happily on Rogue Spear in the zone, and the most i can handle in OFP so far is 4, but I'll always take 6 because some invariably fail to get to the pool. Once I'm in the game it runs fine, but it's getting past the connection stage that sucks right now. Apart from the fact that the type of players you get in gamespy isn't what i'm used to from other games... isn't there anyone out there interested in fun, honest helpful games, or is it all abusive "net rage" .. Also, try the codemasters chat lobby for games, not as funky looking as gamespy but no adds and good old simple ip address posting http://www.codemasters.com/flashpoint/chat/ (Edited by cargo at 10:52 pm on Aug. 27, 2001)
