I thought turning hw acceleration down turns off eax (and other things) anyway?

    Mp / coop missions

I just checked and found 3 of the mission packs in my flashpoint download folders: -GuerrilaPackv1.zip -Op_13_SpecCoopV2.zip -SovietPackv1.zip I also downloaded 8C_SEALPATROL.zip and Alpha13_1.2.zip when the links appeared in this thread. But Alpha13_1.2.zip seems to contain only maps that were in SovietPackl already?!? Lt_Damage: I can mail those to you if you like.

Looking for co-op's with human opfor

I haven't tested them if they really are what you are looking for (never played on the "ai" side) but i don't think tj has a website, or at least i don't know it. You can go on his server and ask him (and test the missions there with da man himself) or contact him here on the board or in the ofp usenet group. I just sent him the link to this thread, maybe he'll turn up soon

Linux server? what about linux client!

Hmm, the advertising said that. From what i know they use a modified wine to do it. And from what i've read even the last version was not up to the promises made in advertising, although was running ok iirc. If you want to try linux then use either redhat/mandrake for more beginner-friendly linux or debian/gentoo to avoid the rpm packaging.

I use the creative drivers. Obviously, having used 3 different os it were different versions. Now with xp professional i downloaded the latest official drivers from their site, version info shows 5.12.2xx on some of the driver files, file was LiveDrvPack.exe, 24.7mb. You can select what to install iirc and i only installed the drivers and set my windows sound settings to 5.1. I used them some drivers for 2k i think. For 98se i'm not sure (it's been a while) but i have a file sblw9xup.exe, 5.42mb in my driver dir... Has anyone tried other stuff like irqs or something, cause i usually disable pnp in bios (although i don't think this will help much on my current box because of apic) and put most/all cards into pci slots which are NOT shared with other slots. Maybe it's something like this. Just an idea, i'll ask my friend if he does the same... lots of wild guessing on my part

I will be on the lookout too. All your maps i could get hold off are on my server. They are excellent. Thanks for making such fine maps I have searched for the other packs with google/filesearching but was unable to find them And unfortunately i have no ftp/webspace to offer either

    Map filename convention

I have thought about the problem with old maps when i first started talking about a naming convention in the thread where this branched off from. I think it's more important to lay a foundation for the future than making a half-assed convention because of the old maps. When mappers know of this convention they can name their maps accordingly. YMMV. Regarding the old maps it would be possible to rename them all to the same name on all servers, but it would require much effort from all admins involved and i'm not sure whether all admins will see a point in this. I mean, they would need to rename the old maps to conform to the naming scheme anyway or they would have different naming schemes on their server. But getting all old maps renamed to exactly the same name/version/etc that all other servers use would require a central "authority" to control the names (maybe with md5 checksums). That is, the first admin to rename a map according to the agreed on naming convention would have to submit the name and md5sum to a central point where other admins could check against their maps. The actual checking/renaming would be no problem with linux, don't know how much work this would be with windows server though. IF there was a possibility to get all the old maps into the naming convention that would be great but i don't think it will work in ALL cases. But it will work in MANY cases and hopefully for ALL new maps. Addendum: It was late yesterday and i did not answer to some of your questions. IF we define a good standard then renaming old maps can be possible. If LEAGUES are part of the name and only the leagues themselves can name their maps they just have to think of ONE leaguetag and use it consequently. IF version numbers may be part of the name then we have to agree on ONE version scheme. "v1.0.2", "v 1.0.2", "v102", "102", maybe something different. From what i've said before, i am against using spaces AND underscores. So i guess we could argue about the dot in the version number, if there should be a leading "v" or not or any "beta" suffixes. I'd propose that there be no stuff like "alpha" or "beta", only a "v" followed by the version number. To keep the name short (as many in this discussion seem to wish) i'd say "v102", no spaces IN the numberfield, no dots except for "betas" (numbers less than 1). "co@16 my mission name v102" for example. "co@16 my mission name v0.8" would be the earlier version of that mission.

    Map filename convention

I guess the reason the thread dies down is a) it's getting old for some and b) most arguments have been told. Most open points seem to be matter of taste and i for one couldn't tell how to resolve those issues. Joltans post for example has a "version" field in the mapname again. Sorry, but with a "version" tag filled in/decided on by admins the whole naming convention is pointless as each admin will put in a different version and mapnames will be different on different servers. If the version is put into the name by the mapper (as it should be imho) then it is part of the MAPNAME and does therefor not need a separate field anyway. I think everyone should state what he wants to achieve with the naming convention. As i stated before i hope for 2 things: 1) readability/ease of use for (guest) admins.... i guess ANY naming scheme would this, no need for convention used by many/all servers. 2) players do not have to download the same map multiple times... this means the convention must be so that the name of the map is the same on EVERY server, no "name of servers addonpack" field, no "admin filled in" fields. AlLL fields have to be MANDATORY and DEFINED, that means every admin must be able to fill in all fields CORRECTLY. I don't know what versions all the maps on my server are, except for those where the mapper put a version into the map. So this is not a DEFINED field. But maybe your goals for this convention are different?!? As for spaces: i don't care if there are spaces or not, but don't mix. And as all fields have to be defined a "leaguetag" is part of the name, it's no "mandatoey" field. As that it has to be separated by spaces too. It has therefor to be "c&h@32 leaguetag name of map".

I just talked to a friend (who also has no problems with his soundblaster card) and we both use the drivers ONLY. Nothing else of the creative software. He made the same experience as i: using that other stuff makes the system unstable... Maybe that helps. I can use eax and 5.1, hw sound acceleration set to max without any issues in 98se/2k/xp.

Linux server? what about linux client!

There are really FEW games that have linux clients. Around 20 i would guess, maybe a little more. Most of them were done by Loki before they've gone broke. Half-Life has NO linux client. You could run HL with wine(x) for a while but with valve anticheat software the emulated (i know: wine is not an emulator) gets "detected" as cheat and kicked from multiplayer games. Or at least it did with the first versions of vac. Regarding performance wine is no real solution imho. Most loki ports were FASTER with linux than with win. There was an article about UT2003 just now which stated that less then 1% of the players connect to the servers with linux clients. This most probably means that there are very few players who bought it for linux (i don't think anyone would buy UT2003 to play against bots all the time). So linux clients do not pay off (yet). Most players, even when linux users, boot into windows to play and buy the windows games. If there were a linux version of ofp goty i would buy it. But, how many more ppl would do that? Things may change, there seem to be games with linux clients (out or at least promised) which are not ported by 3rd parties but by the developers (or hired teams) themselves (ut2k3, nwn). And i think this is very good for lilnux as a whole cause with more gamers using linux the hardware vendors are more likely to make (good) drivers for linux. But i don't think there will be linux client for ofp. Maybe for ofp2. I'm happy enough that there is a linux server at last

I think some of TJs maps have a few spots on the enemy side, but i'm not sure if you get to command more ais with those spots. But it may worth a try for you, else i can try in the next days and tell you whether those missions are what you want and what they are called.

    Map filename convention

I think it is better to have the first block only letters and digits (and the addon marker where it applies). Looks more uniform to me. Ampersand sticks out. I'd like the addon marker to stick out only. And i can't see what is wrong with cnh/ch (or and/ad). I don't really care if the first fields get lumped together into one block or not, seems to be a matter of taste. "co@16 name of mission" looks still readable to me and is shorter and one can use the first space as a separator between tag block and mission name. And we could use spaces as separators within the name block then cause all other fields would be one block anyway. But i could live with "co@ 16 name of mission" as well. What i really don't like is mixing spaces and underscores, as in "co@ 16 name_of mission" or "co@16 name_of_mission".

    **crackling sb live etc solved**

Bricktop: Maybe i got your posting wrong, sorry if i overreacted. But from what i know i'd say that if a game supports eax (or a3d or similar techniques) those are used to locate sounds in space (direction, distence, etc) REGARDLESS of hardware (headphones, 2 speakers or 5 speakers). So, as ofp supports eax you CAN use 5.1 systems. And from what i've read factors like occlusion get computed into the sounds. This naturally only applies when the sound drivers work as they should. If you have to turn down hardware sound acceleration and turn off eax to get rid of the crackling bug you won't get much from your surround sound system. That's what i dislike about creative, their drivers seem to suck (well, the VIA bug was mostly caused by creative cards which put too much load on the pci bus afaik, so much for their hardware). But for me, i never had problems with footsteps or crackling and i have an old sb live and used win98se, win2k and now xp professional in the 1 1/2 years of playing ofp. I always had eax enabled and sound hardware acceleration set to maximum. I checked those drivers out a few weeks ago (i think i read about them in another post on this forum) and had not enough problems with creatives to actually try them out as they stated on their page that the drivers are beta and some things don't work yet. But if i ever get problems with creatives driver i maybe will do. Or test my 5.1 onboard sound. Or get a soundcard from another manufacturer

    **crackling sb live etc solved**

Bricktop: those words are not something creative came up with and of DOES support 5.1, it's called EAX. You obviously have no clue. It's good that these drivers solve your sound issues and they may be worth a try for others but don't post stuff that just is not true. There is stuff like occlusion, there is stuff like eax and 5.1 surround sound is possible with any game that supports eax. That's what eax is for. I am using a soundblaster card and 5.1 surround sound myself. And i never had any crackling issues, or footprints, or else. I also never had any T&L issues with graphics btw. This doesn't mean i'm too happy with soundblaster cards, my next card will be a terratec, turtle beach or hercules. But that's beside the point. You like the drivers. Good. But that does not mean that everyone who doesn't like them is an idiot like you insinuate. There are reasons to use eax and a surround sound setup may be the best one. I'd rather advise people to buy a decent soundcard and not stuff from creative labs.

    Warnings in mp/serverlogs

Does anyone know what could cause the following warning messages some players on my server get: Player uses modified data file - res\bin\config.bin Player uses modified data file - res\bin\resource.bin Player uses modified config file - cfg/CfgVehicles/Plane/ Player uses modified config file - cfg/CfgWorlds/DefaultWorld/Subdivision/ Player uses modified data file - kegnoecain_snow\kegnoecain_snow.wrp Player uses modified data file - noe\noe.wrp Player uses modified data file - sebnam_ia_trang\seb_iatrang.wrp Player uses modified data file - worlds\abel.wrp Player uses modified data file - worlds\cain.wrp Player uses modified data file - worlds\sttabel_desert.wrp Player uses modified data file - orangeland\orangeland.wrp Player uses modified data file - ebe1\ebeden_jungle.wrp I know that satchels dynamic range uses a modified config.bin (using that one myself), but how does one get a modified resource.bin? Or modified worldfiles? And what do the Plane and Subdivision messages mean? Subdivision seems to come from dynamic range too, although i'm not 100% sure of that. Resource.bin has changed from 1.85 to 1.90, so maybe this doesn't mean that the user has actually modified the file but is using an older version of ofp, i.e. 1.85?!? And btw: does the goty edition use the same res\bin\config.bin and resource.bin files? I am asking this cause some of my players want to see all players banned which use modified files and before i do this i want to know if there may be a good reason for having modified files.

Vote your most helpful fellow poster in 2002!

Well, that's a difficult decision. Avon with her faq and Kegetys with his expertise in all things ofp are imho the most likely to win this poll. And they would have earned it. But in the end i voted for MilesTeg cause he is the backbone of the usenet ofp discussion group, alway helpful, always calming heated discussions down. And as i read and post there a lot too he has really been my most helpful fellow poster (if not always in THIS forum only). TJ would have deserved a mention too imho...

Sad to say it but i don't really like the & in mapnames and i like having ONE separator. Spaces OR Underscores. Not both. But i don't care whether spaces or underscrores will be used. But not both.

    White.pac on server install missing!

Hmm, i am using the datapbominimal on my server too. So, i am missing the white flag too it seems. Maybe worth a note to Kegetys. Or it's my chance to try how difficult it is to add a flag to a pbo...
  21. I don't know whether you can do it in a mission (like to know that myself), but it can be done on the server. Just open your users/player/userinfo.cfg and enter: diffWeaponCursor[]={0,0}; In the mission... not really sure, but maybe you can try it in the description.extm as with showWatch...

    White.pac on server install missing!

I think Kegetys made a dataminimal.pbo which contains only the flags, so you don't have to upload the whole data.pbo. But i'm not sure WHICH flags it actually contains. In other words: Did you use Kegetys minimal pbo and the flag was missiong there too? If not you can use that one instead of the big original pbo...

The "what do i do" co op gamer.

I have to agree with Skunk Monkey, most players are older. Most players i meet are older than 30. If there are players who mess up coop although being told the plan i make sure they don't play on my server again. If i tell all players during briefing that it is a stealth mission and all have to hold fire and some player thinks it's fun to shoot in the air at the start of the mission then it's time to say goodbye for him. We had a game yesterday where the first five casualties were because of teamkill... No one of my regular players was one, only public players i had not played with before. Man, that sucked. The one guy kept throwing grenades into his own team. Everyone except him was were the leader had told us to go. I told him 3 times to stop it and healed at the medic twice. Then i shot him while he lobbed the 4th or 5th grenade at me and the medic and all of us 3 were dead I often play teamleader so i can give orders, like get down, move there, attack that. Sadly, most public players don't listen to orders. What's worse, when THEY are leader, they don't give any orders. The leader is most important cause he gets all the information. He can see whether all soldiers are in the truck already or not or where they are, he can assign targets that some other soldier spotted, etc. Luckily, the missions played with my regulars compensate more than enough for the public play

    Map filename convention

Before we should vote for anything we should maybe talk about WHAT WE ACTUALLY WANT. If you want a uniform naming scheme there can be no optional fields. If one admin fills in this optional field and another doesn't there is one map with 2 different names. If EVERY admin puts the name of HIS addon pack into the name the map will have a DIFFERENT name on each server. If a map has a different name on each server anyway, then why agree on a "convention" here that is no convention at all? If the player has to download the same map again on every server he goes to then there really is no need to make a naming scheme. If every admin puts his addon tag into the name of the map and renames it there is no reason for a mapmaker to name his new map after this convention cause the admins will rename it anyway. Yeah, addon tags are really cool, each player knows at once which pack to download. But only on the one server that uses that one pack. Does anyone know where you load GRB addon pack? No? Does it even exist (anymore)? So which addons does that co@ 16 blamap GBR need? Addon tags are of no use when you are not on the one server using exactly that addon pack. And, well, when i'm playing on that server i know WHICH pack to download anyway, either there is only one or i download all cause i don't want to be kicked off every second map. Same with versions, every admin will use a different version number. Only the mapper can put an "official" version number into the map, and if he does it's part of the map anyway. An universal naming scheme leaves no room for optional fields and all fields have to have DEFINED values. Something like "admin puts in version number he likes" or "admin puts in name of HIS and ONLY HIS addon pack" destroy uniform naming. I don't know how many times i have written this so far without anyone saying something about it... Maybe we are talking about different naming conventions? Maybe i am the only one not getting what you want to accomplish with this naming convention? I mean, if i as player have to download the same map on every server again i wouldn't call it a naming convention. And if as an admin the map has a different name because of my addon tag anyway there is no reason to name it similar to maps on another server anymore. The same applies to mappers... why adopt a naming scheme when the map gets renamed by each admin anyway?

    Map filename convention

Spaces vs Underscores vs other: using xargs as Kegetys said should get around the spaces problem in shell scripts (the file system never had probs with spaces as others already said correctly), so spaces are an option. I guess i was a stubborn old bastard cause i really don't like spaces in filenames on unix systems, but it's more a personal thing than a real point. Separating fields with dots/underscores/nothing at all does cause no problems with linux, so until anyone has other points for/against field delimiters it seems to be a matter of personal preference. Upper-/Lowercase: Windows Admins can use whatever they want (cause windows doesn't care). When a linux admin installs a map he converts it to lowercase anyway (so capitalised mapnames don't bother linux admins), and as the windows CLIENTS make no difference between lowercase and capitalised/uppercase nobody has to download the map again (so it doesn't affect windows clients). There is really no incompatibility in using capitalized names. Version: Well, the only one to assign an official version number to the mission would be the mapper himself, so if he does i would see that version number as part of the map name. If every server admin assigns version numbers by himself we get a lot of differently named maps. Addons: I hope once a naming scheme is agreed on mappers will adopt it for new maps. They CAN'T do that when they have to include for example ADDON PACKS (except when making maps for a specific server). And putting ALL ADDONS in the name would result in really long mission names. I think that is what the readme is for. We already have an addon tag and an readme, that is enough in my opinion. If the system gets too complicated it won't work anymore.
