    What i wanted to say is that the further away a server is from any given player the higher the probability it will "go bad" due to one slower/heavily trafficed network segment or just from hops/pings getting too high. So there is no "the fastest ofp server in the world" for all players, if you take connectivity into account. And as we all know connectivity is important in ofp cause it will cause massive desyncs for everyone in the game if it goes bad, regardless how fast the cpu and the ram is. I guess most asians will not be likely to play on any of our servers. I don't really care if my server is the fastest or the slowest in the community, although i guess our first server must have been the slowest ofp server ever But we have a grown crowd of players, and that matters more to me than the odd fps more or less. I do this to have fun in ofp, not to have the fastest server in the community. I guess with our new server we are not even near that zone where zeus has been for years and their new server will blast us away by a great margin. But i am happy about what we got now, amd64 3000+, 2gb ram, located in a computing center with switched 100mbit network and connected with 6.4gbit to several backbones. As we never had intel cpus i can't really say anything to "ht under linux" issue, but from what i gather you never had any really experienced linux admins around, so it could be related to something else entirely. If you used stuff like suse or redhat/fedora and never compiled your own kernel and removed unnecessary services, etc you can have lots of things going on that impair performance of the server. I OTOH can't say anything about it as i never could compare it to windows, as we always used linux as our server os. I can only say linux works good enough for us. I am reluctantly to switch to 64bit linux as this would generate downtime again, but i may do that in the near future to see if it gives the server another performance boost and if ofp works at all with a 64bit os. With a 32bit os on a 64bit cpu it works well.

    This idea has been implemented years ago as part of the functionality of punk buster. Other programs had it too. And it could be circumvented too.

    backwoods & Malboeuf: why are the specs of other admins servers so interesting? If you like fast servers you should wait for Shrikes new server, which will be faster than the two of yours put together BTW: i just pinged your servers. I get a constant 230 ping from RN, and a wildly changing ping between 190 and 240 from ICL. Fluctuating pings are not a good sign for a stable connection And i get a ping < 70 from my own server. Regardless how good your servers are, they are too far away for me or players from my area anyway and the WORST bit of the connection of each player determines ping and bandwidth. So i don't think there is a reason to compete. Besides i would rather play with nice people and a higher ping than the other way round. In the beginning we hosted from home for a few friends, and although ping and bandwidth was crappy we enjoyed this more than any public server. The players on my server are a grown community and thats more worth to me than good ping. Although i can't complain about our new server at all

    Actually, one of my clan mates already did the same. I am not sure whether he modified the existing mission or started one from scratch, but he made a mission like this without all the wgl addons for all islands iirc.

    Ping under 100? We usually play with pings going from something like 15ms up. Depends on your connection though. My first hop is already in the 60s, so my ping on the server is about that value too. I don't think there is a standard way to do this as there are no logs but i made a script that does check this. For now it works on uncompressed missions only though. Your best bet would be to unpack the mission with unpbo and check the mission.sqm for needed addons, or run the mission as a client and check for the error message. You need the addons in the res/addons folder. The res and world folders are the only folders you need actually. You can delete the rest. Check here for more details.

    You have most probably a broken addon. But sadly it is hard to tell which one. You could try moving all addons to the addons folder, that helps in some cases, but not in all. It will most probably NOT be the addon in the message, as that is resistance and the addon dependencies work that way that most of the times a broken addon causes problems with a correct one, ie the broken addon causes problems with bis_resistance.

    I actually have written a script that gets me all the warez ids from my server logs and bans them. I have some ids that were used by more than 250 different nicks. I guess i lose players that way, but only the "non-dedicated" ones. And those are more likely to disrupt a game anyway.

    You can use ECP to take over other players into your group, thereby disabling their possibility to have groups themselves and destroy the whole gameplay of cti. I wouldn't allow ECP in cti myself, even if we use it too sometimes (but not for cti) and although we sometimes even let the server run with ecp enabled. Also, many mods cause problems in mp if not everyone is running them. There were problems with ECP 1.5x which crashed servers if only some players used them and other mods have similar problems. But normally only the players using those mods drop out off the game after some time. But even that is annoying in a cti. After all, it's the decision of the admin who can play there and why. If he does not know you and does not trust you enough to not disrupt the cti after hours of play he can tell you to turn off ecp. Either accept it or don't play there.

    That's utter bullshit. Repeating your bullshit will not make it any more true. If there is a way to put more hosts into a /24 network than PROVE it, show us the math. But you can't. Because you just told bullshit. I never did claim something like that. Another lie you make up. But that you have to resort to personal attacks shows that you have no arguments to back up your bullshit claims. Get a life. Rereading your post will not bring any more information, as there aren't any. I could say too, that depending on how you build your car you can go through time with it, but until proven this is just a ridiculous statement, as ridiculous as yours. Your other posts were flames too. Just claiming your other posts were not flames because you did not mark them flames and did with this one does not make the other posts less a flame. Why don't you stop posting until you have something to say to the topic. If you just want to insult me you can use PM for that.

    Yes, we do run OFP Watch. You could just start OFP Watch and go to the server browser and select the server with the most players on it and reasonable ping and go there.

    You could ask the admin if he restarts the game for you. We normally do this on our server for regular players.

    OFP listens on 4 udp port: 2302, 2303, 2304 and one random high port. 2302 is the server, 2303 is gamespy, 2304 and the other are undocumented.

    OFP uses UDP protocol. The udp header only contains source and destination port, length and checksum. No timestamp or anything to measure packet latencies. IP protocol also does not seem to have a timestamp in it's headers. And even if it did you it would not help you as you don't really know which packet is an answer to which other packet. If you want to measure the "ping" of a client, you will have to do by analyzing the content of the packets, like "which packet contains some option to synchronize with server and which packet contains the answer to that and how much time passed in between". Else you would have to check with some other method, eg any service or icmp or udp ping echo request and reply. But most people have icmp echo reply turned off. You could also try to open tcp connections to arbitrary ports and wait for RST or icmp port unreachable packets, but most firewalls will just drop your requests and not answer back. So in most cases there just is no way to calculate the ping of a given player. For players that did not disable icmp echo reply the above will work, i already tested that on my server. But those were only 2 players on a full server. But if you are of the "ban whole subnets" mentality you could also kick all players that have ping disabled. Or don't kick them and live with the highpingers that have ping disabled. Or go out and enjoy the sun while the good weather lasts

    But as i (and others, namely sicilian) told you, banning by ip is practically not working in our country, and may not in others too, as i can get a new ip in one second and it will be in a totally different subnet. So this tool is useless for server admins here. You could have taken that as it was intended: information how things are run in other countries around the world. Instead you go off and say stuff like "i do this for years, this works" and "you are networking noobs". And make some ridiculous claims about networking setup. 8 bit have only 256 different combinations, and due to the nature of the netmask (using AND and OR to calculate network adresses) you can only effectively use 254 of those combinations, and one of those has be a router out of the network. There may have been a misunderstanding somewhere inthat discussion, and if there were that should have been obvious to you, cause sicilian and i told you how we came to that numbers (which you didn't). But you never cared to resolve that if there was any, instead calling us noobs. But it's not only that the tool would be useless to me and other serveradmins: If your tool automatically bans those long ids, an id faker from this country could effectively DOS a server for all users from this country: just change ip often enough and all users from his country will be blocked. And this will work for all countries where a) the majority of all ppl use the same ISP and b) that ISP distributes IPs in a random fashion from all his "subnets". This may not be the case where you come from, but it is here. I say again, you could have taken this as information, but you chose not to but to disregard it and instead flame us. So i have to ask myself: would i want to run a tool that is tailored towards some specific network environment that is totally different from my own? From a coder that does not listen to user concerns? I think i rather wait for sicilians tool to automatically ban long ids or write my own for my server.

I don't know how you call that continent, but we here in europe call it america. And did you notice how he did not answer a single of the topics i mentioned? Thats because he has no ansers. He made some ridiculous claims about network setup and failed to give an explanation. Not once, at least thrice. And the way he answers shows that he has not collaboration and exchange of knowledge in mind, but only showing off. Look up the other thread, where i supplied a nearly complete script for linux servers to automatically kick highpingers and he only writes something like "yeah, there are apps to do this in win too but they are hard to find". Very helpful for the poster. And then he goes off flaming me, that i never did help someone and similar nonsense. That's when i decided further arguing is just a waste of time. A troll will draw you down to his low niveau and will beat you there with his experience. Your very "mature" reply shows that discussing with you is a waste of time also. Do you hold some personal grudge against me?

    You can't "enable" it. Either your graphics card HAS this feature or it HASN'T. The MX hasn't. So it will not work with this card. This card is equal to a GF2, not a GF4. The MX line was kind of a big hoax...
  18. I can alt+tab out of the game and back in without problems. Do you run different resolutions/refresh rates in ofp and desktop?
  19. I ran it with ECP too and had some strange effects but i was too busy playing to memorize what exactly was wrong. I also had some graphical glitches when using ECP, but that just might be my old card being pushed beyond its limit.

    CPP to BIN please Help

    If you used the official config.cpp from BIS you can forget getting it back into bin format. The cpp2bin Tool is buggy, it will only work with a very limited syntax, as used in the inofficial configs going around. In particular it does not like #defines of floats, enums, class functions and some more. I tried some too to get my cpp into bin format and found some more stuff that cpp2bin just could not convert although it is correct code from BIS and works in ofp. cpp2bin can't even convert the official config.cpp from BIS.

    Yes, we are noobs, because we are not leet americans like you. Here in germany ip banning is pointless, as i have told and explained you times before. I can reconnect in one second and get an ip in a different subnet. I showed you the logfile of my ips, it's a different subnet with every dialin, every second. So you have to ban that subnet too, and one second later the next, and after a short while you will have banned 95% of all german ofp players. Maybe YOUR ISP does this differently, but here there is no such thing as DHCP leases giving you the same ips again. But i guess it is ok to take your own situation as a standard and generalize about the rest of the world based on this. And call everyone a noob who tells you that things are run differently in his country. Cause obviously you know better how ISPs handle things in asia and europe than the people living there. Why don't you explain how you will get 255 or even 256 hosts into a network with a 255.255.255.0 netmask, as you claimed before but never cared to explain to sicilian or me, instead of just claiming the answer would appear if we read your "it depends on network setup" answer often enough?
