There's no reason, he accidentally used the directplay mode. Forgot to enable Sockets. It happens and it's all right. But this game shouldn't erase your files because you forget something. This is ridicilous.

He did it? Gimme a break. It was OFP. He accidentally started an OFP server in directplay mode and that caused the famous OFP's mother-of-all-bugs to him. I as a commanding officer of LDD Kyllikki am very sorry to you because we kind of caused this happen to you. Actually I was considering that I post a warning of this to our forums, but I didn't want to do that because it wouldn't be fair to BIS and CM.

I don't see anything in my game manual about restricting OFP's permissions to certain files. How are you going to tell ev'rybody who has bought OFP that they have to play around with their file systems? I just doubt is releasing a patch which fixes a problem that OFP is erasing all your files now and then a good idea from game's publisher point of view.

Directplay is altenative method for Sockets implementation for OFP Multiplayer. OFP's in-game voice is disabled with Sockets but works with Directplay.
-
I just wanted to show that this is not a new problem.

Well I do, Our squad has played always with directplay and this nice little problem has occurred 4 times to our server, 3 times to me and there's at least 10 guys whose partition has got erased while OFP has done something when using directplay. vittu että on niin syvältä perseestä ettei mikään oo ennen ollu niin syvällä.

I hope U can fix this problem ASAP, a quick solution for this could be a simple patch which disables Directplay from Multiplayer menu? I believe there's a lot of people who doesn't know that OFP can erase all your files from your hard drive partition. I'm happy that I never installed OFP to my C: partition and saved my Windows.

They made it! Looks like they figured out what is causing this.

An old thread Dec. 09 2002,14:54 was the starting date for that thread, thanks for the fast reply...

Happened to me also, all files except ofpresistance.exe and few OFP files simply disappeared while playing OFP. This was with WIN98. No viruses, didn't find anything what was wrong. 8 Gigabytes just vanished. One friend of mine had same problem yesterday, and his OFP was on his drive C: Byebye Windows(XP). And third victim was our server, three times in row when installing OFP Resistance. (Win2k) EDIT: or right after installation.

My Experiance is VON does lag ... I have used both RW and TS instead with no problems, of course you have to use different channels for different sides and before clan matches sort out your whisper keys (TS) before a clan match. But this isnt so hard. Normally we all just use one RW channel and speak in turn. Its not like you all need constant communication, just a few pointers will suffice for a well organised squad used to working together. Kegetys & Kyllikki are very well respected in the OFP world so it with great confusion that its this lot who find VON so critical. Kegetys has got round so many problems in OFP and his Spectator script is just what was needed for good, long, epic COOP missions that I like so much.... so why you cant sort out using teamspeak i really dont know .... oh well you are the Guru I guess you have your reasons. Myself I'm glad no1 can lag out the servers I play on when some annoying voiced american kid come on's and wont shut the fuck up .. at least with 3rd party voice comm you can choose who has access... i dont want someone mouthing off all the time on a public server who just wont shut up and it can be really hard to work out who is speaking over VON and kick them, I have in the past kicked the wrong person. This of course doesnt apply to clan servers, only public servers and no VON was a god-send in 1.75. There you are my tuppence worth.<span id='postcolor'> I just wanted to know is one of the greatest features in OFP multiplayer perhaps included in Sockets, and I did got my answer, thank you. Speaking of VON, why it is so important to LDD Kyllikki, here's an example: Think about leading 3 squads of men, 8 guys each. Then U have a helicopter pilot and a tank crew. That makes it 5 different units. Global, Side, 5 X Group channels, Vehicle channels for each vehicle(very useful when squad leader is reading the map and talks to driver), and finally the Direct speak which is great also. Our squad leaders use it now and then when they want discuss about something privatly. I cannot understand how U can make this work with some kind of 3rd party software, when you can't tell before the mission who is going to get in UAZ #1 and Uaz #2 in Bravo squad for example. I have never seen lag caused by VON on our server, but I understand that might be the case when pings are higher. We pay for our server for playing OFP and it's not very cheap(not going to tell how much), but our pings are are from 30-50 for almoust everybody, 50-55 from northern Finland, even if there's 30 guys on our server. We play this simulation quite seriously, our squads practises every week, they have ORDERS to maintain formations and they have to obey orders given by their leaders and so on. This is the reason why VON is so important to us, but I have never demanded it, only asked about it.

Patch coming out soon, any news is in-game voice working with sockets now?

But satchel charges cannot be "active weapons" do they? We tried to load satchels into helicopter last night, didn´t work and I assumed that it´s impossible to load them. It would be very useful to implement this, there´s a lot of good MP missions where only satchels are available to destroy enemy´s base.

BIS, Is in-game voice going to work with Sockets, or do we have to just stick with the DirectPlay?
-
Same thing with campfires. If your friend next to you turns fire on/off in campfire, it doesn't affect the campfire which is on your monitor. This hasn't worked in 1.46 either...
