Why use nationalities in a video game?

I have yet to see fictional armies which would work in game which happens in todays world. Maybe participants which wield great variety of equipment from various "sides", has imersive story and backgrounds so that player can easily adapt to them... Maybe. Sadly US is logical choice of another participant (the winning one/the good guys) as it bring huge customer base from America. I don't know about Russian's, hardly ever Russians are shown as complete bad. Forexample in OFP Cuba was rebel, and Kreml wished to punish him. Yeah, that probably doesn't remove the fact that almost whole world (=Non-Russian forums) are shouting how naughty Russians are and how they got their nose bleeding in this game as well from good guys. Tom Clancy's books indeed are mostly just bad. Older he get worse books he writes Â

    No Army?

Yeah. Motor infantry would probably be most logical explanation.

What are exploits of such feature? Sniper carrying M9 and M16/M203 and M24 in MP comes to mind. Ofcourse if magazine amount is limited then MP-guy has to split his inventory even more. 25 sniper rounds, 3 full magazines for M16 + 6 40mm grenades. M9 with 2 magazines. and 2 hand grenades + 2 smoke shells... Well has to agree that is quite a arsenal. Average games probably won't be able to use even 10% of that stuff before he gets shot. Now exploit in MP is that every guy carries almost same stuff but we just replace M24 with AT4, RPG-7 or Javelin. That is quite a arsenal as well. Frankly i don't see much difference: replacing uber sniper weapon (we can still have AGOC), with AT-capacity. True it can be scripted into game. Probably quite easily. And i'm not requesting it (more important thing there are), just challenging few points of view.

    Shaky hands & blurred vision

I could believe there is going to be option to control it by scripts atleast, if it can't be turned off from difficulty menu. Naah anyways i'm starting to think that more things there are optional more broken gameplay experience there will be. Just like ArmA's AI difficulty from config (or from difficulty menu). Sure it's nice that i can tweak game to be more easy or hard, but i start to think that at same time game looses some of it's solidness. Well that is just me.

    No Army?

What are Russians going to be? Airborne-infantry, special-troops or regular. Seem like they wield bit of optics (like Cobra), but gear seem pretty grunt(-ish). So i'd guess airborne.

So? Why can i blitz all-around ArmA battlefield with carrying Javelin and why i shouldn't be able to do that with 2 rifles Weight penalty = good thing. But i just don't get that how in hell's bells i can't carry rifle, when i can carry either JAvelin, RPG, radio, AT4 along with my rifle (each of them weight more than rifle). You tell me that, with good reasons. And maybe it's cease my crusade. I just doubt that there are any. POTS: You know what. Many hunters carry two weapons, shotgun and rifle during hunts. And have had not special training for that (well imagine that!, they just take two weapons (which they handle) and start to hunt. Is it rabbit? Takes shotgun. Is it deer/moose? takes rifle. Aim, sqeeze the trigger and go collect your price. We are NOT talking about just standart issued equipment (or logistics or price of weaponry) here, but option to take your killed sniper/marksman's rifle and carry it along with assault rifle. I admit that it's not very important matter really. But arguments against putting it into game are just silly. Best argument i can figure against it, is probably strain to developers, while they could use that time to improve something else.

ARMA 2 In-game HD Video released

I've left poundering that last part where they are inside some warehouse as prisoners.... Hmm does that have relevance in game's campaign? ... I think i have hunch of how campaign will flow  Pretty interesting really. But i'm not going to say anything. Reason being as it might spoil something  (Real reason: because i'm probably wrong and would look like bigger ass that i already am) I don't remember have i said this, but i'd believe too that "grenade into room and then entry into room"-scene it was scripted animation. It indeed would be nice to be wrong.

    Working Camouflage

I personally think that ArmA's units does stand out from back ground. However good camo (North Sahrani and SLA uniform as example) they are wearing they are just too visible. I did bit of tests spotting. about 9 months ago, can't say that my memory works flawlessly so can be that i'm wrong. I placed three SLA guys in grassy area infront of me, while i was standing in high tower. Ranges were something like 200-400 meters. SLA guys had random area of 100 meters where they would be created, while they were lying. I could find then in less than half minutes without any kind zoom. Basically i just scanned 500 meters wide area it it took very small time to confirm that i stared at SLA guy. There were some amount of rocks and bushes, but they didn't pose much of a problem... If SLA guy didnt' lie behind bush and rock. Then i changed terrain texture in visitor from plain green into spots ranging from yellow to dark brown (looks ugly as hell). Spotting time increased to even minutes... However when my eyes "learned" to filter new texture time required to spot them dropped to something like minute or minute and half.

    Delay for ArmA II?

But yet Q1 can turn to be Q2, Q3 or even Q4 when release gets closer. As very extreme example year 2009 can change to 2010. Didn't ArmA's first release in eastern Europe got postponed atleast one quarter? Or does my mind do tricks on this?

As far as i've conserened i can carry not M/16 with M203, mags and grenades, Javelin with CLU in my back and it doesnt' effect my agility, running speed etc. ... Why not to have two rifles And besides like i said earlier US Marines are adopting Grenade revolvers (M32 MGLs) to replace M203 for atleast combat/assault troops... And yes they are going to carry M4 as sidearm. Having weight penalty to sprint's and fast crawl's speed and lenght, reduces stealth ratio and possible turning speed would indeed be good thing. Being plain rifleman with just few hand grenades would then be something worthy to consider. Lightly equipped scouts/snipers also.

AI settings - how to strike a balance?

Affects to they will to flee. Skill and rank both have effect in this. I believe it's only relative for leaders. I'm not sure do they handle commanding better with higher level. I haven't studied that.

    Military flash lights

I repeat what has been said already: Red and green reduces night vision less than bright light. Still advisable to keep another eye closed or covered. In very lowlight conditions it takes minutes for eyes to recover from red light. I think i've heard that in ww2 green light was found out to be better for night vision forexample in airplanes, however nowdays ever lamp (expect military models) seems to have only red lens. So i'm not sure is it really so. Maybe they ment easiness of map reading? Various color lens can be used to get better picture out of map. For example fields and elevation lines marked on orange/red are quite hard to see in map with red. That's with my maps. as forest is marked white (as land scape is covered with forest, no need to waste ink), and there are just few greenish colors, such as open wet marshes.

you are .... i will not say who first had Shtora/Arena ? active system protecting tanks ? does american tanks have such system that fires vs. flying rocket ? who had first ERA ? etc. Russian tanks were better than western heh you have no idea about Russia (not worse and cheapest T72 sold to Iraq and known from last wars) Wikipedia says... oh my god have you seen single T72 with DSHK have you seen T64, T80 with DSHK every russian tank can fire AT rockets Abrams, Leopard do not fire rockets for example in 1987 Russian T80 could destroy any west tank from 3 km by 9M119 which 20% little weaker than TOW do you know what is Shtora ? is there any west tank such modern like T80U ?? Abram, Leopard can fire and effectively destroy Russian tank by sabot from 2 km but russian tank can fire rocket from 4 km and when TOW is lauchned vs. T80U, its systems fires something like preventing ERA explosion, that causes rocket destruction 2 meters before touching T80 !!! if T90 has DSHK, please BIS mount M1919A4 on Abrams !!! please cut M16A2 barrel and call it M4, if AK74M with changed pipe is called AK107 First i'd personally don't care a bit. 2nd many your "facts" are quite way off the mark... But then again i dont' care. Third this is way offtopic already. I think Placebo cares about that.

Because we're all dicks and must analyze every frame of the vid for errors. Indeed  Video itself is fine. I like BIS's devteams usual music choices. Forest fighting scene was nice. It's just that... well... what i'm bitching and moaning on regular basis wasn't tossed at my face. Improved AI-system.

Actual footage of what will there be different with micro-AI and AI in general would be very interesting to see. That trailer's AI seemed to be regular ArmA AI. That room assault seemed to be indeed scripted event. So i agree. Trailer didn't show stuff what i wished to see. Bad vibes.

AI settings - how to strike a balance?

I don't know how 6th Sense's suppression framework works, but it might be that when one team is suppressed to some degree it goes bit of unwilling to do anything else than seek cover and shoot. As engaging usually means that they are sent on suicide mission if enemy is capable to fight back. So to get them flanking they need to have group out of combat as a reserve unit. Then it should understand to get into flanks. Guard-waypoint might work. This however has to be considered when doing mission.

Hmm... AI's actions looks pretty much old and dumb again. No leaning and calmly going past own bodies present. Blast. Bit disappointment there for me.
  23. Why would the squad leader or anyone else for that matter being using hand signals during a contact, Because it's possible that no-one will hear you if you just yell. When there is alot powder burned and arty shells hitting ground, you might have to start using hand signals. True handsignals are very usable when you can't use your voice... Which is pretty much always if not idle (=safe or careless). Then again is it wise for SL to rise his hand up into air when hiding in bush in front of enemy squad?  ... At least it look stupid, maybe enemy AI even is capable to register that risen hand and as a result lobs handgrenade to that bush  I dont' know how they will work in monitor.

    Shaky hands & blurred vision

Yes. I'm not saying that suppression effect would (much) prolong PvP matches happening from short shooting distances. Longer might be different: If you are suppressed and enemy is not, you might think things differently as you probably won't hit him, while he (more) probably hits you. Or then it doesn't matter as you will respawn in 15 seconds even if you got killed. Mostly i'm for Blur+hand shake because most new games does that (well just blur mostly) and it's cool and usable + AI gets suppression model too. I get it that you dont' like it, but like i would care To my understandment we still don't know what kind it will be. Blur when getting hit and hands shaking when near miss? Or both on both cases?

    Shaky hands & blurred vision

Well yes. That just tells how badly deformed current MP is. Please explain to me what kind of working and well-formed MP game mode has players firing at each other without the intention to kill the enemy. What happens when someone actually gets killed and what stops people from simply shooting to kill? Is it fun to play? Okay i explain by one TDM (or was it C&H?) back in OFP days. We had about 10-15 guys in both teams. My team, Finns, task was to take out immobilized T-80 in middle of ruins, while opposing side, rebel troop of that FDF's desert island, were to keep it intact. Idea was that you probably didnt' see anyone. There was alot of cover close to ruins where rebels could hide, while it wasn't easy task to get to ruin for attacker as it was mostly open with just few covering spots. No respawn (oh those days! ) made it difficult matter to approach the target. Our side used alot of fire trying to create opprtunity to get close to that T-80 (or destroy it from distance with AT-weapons). Opportunity always wasn't created so much by killing your enemy but to tie and catch it's attention to another location, and trying to gain possibility to destroy T-80 from another direction. Basically that could be called decoy&deception. For example i did tie down opponent's UAZ armed with SPG-9. My goal wasn't to kill it (heck i didnt' even know where it was), rushing across open field would have been suicide. So i just popped up, fired few shots at random locations and hit the dirt behind cover (usually SPG-9's round landing somewhere close to me). Same happened elsewhere by others. Then suddenly T-80 went off. Maybe it was finnish UAZ with recoiless rifle flanking defences, or small team actually working it's ways thru rebel's defences i dont' know. Sure i would have killed some one if it would have popped to my iron sights, but that wasn't my main objective. And my main objective wasn't activelly seeking enemies. Common MP-game isn't like this. Everyone are running in amok. You got fired at... It only means that you have some-one to kill and you better to that soon or someone else does it. Ranges are short so firefight tends to last less than second, and players kill-or-be-killed mind set doesn't support the cautious playing style. It hard to form coherent playing style or "tactical" pattern when players are joining and respawning in random pattern. And "death" really is not a issue.
