Does camouflage actually work against the AI?
Second replied to BF2_Trooper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
This is related to their behavior, or has been in OFP and ArmA. I dont' believe this would have been changed in ArmA2: If they are in safe mode you can crawl underneath their noses. If they are in danger mode they will spot your eyeballs thru grass at great distances. -
I don't see reason to go into special backpacks, like for rockets or missiles. -Getting bit too complicated: which backpack can carry what items? -Creating artificial limits: AT-guy carries just AT-weapons and not ammo for machine gun. Or machine gunner can't carry AT-weapons even when he has loaded his final belt into his MG.
-
I think all armies likes to issue pieces of cord and/or string to their soldiers. One can hang himself with them... Or attach items to their carrying systems with them. I've carried 100 liters in and on my 60 liter backpack + over 2 meters long skis: Lots of stuff hanging outside backpack. Typical example is Shovel, crowbars, saws etc attached to backpack.

This last time. 13.6 kg? That was very typical load along with Apilas and M72, 4 M72s weights about same. Or what LMG gunner or his loader carried. Or what radio-operator with older radio will carry. It isn't nothing special. Many other guys has to coupe with it. We don't have M136 yet, and hopefully selections will choose newest M72, instead of M136. Smaller, lighter. So yes weight and size still are factors. 2 M136 would probably take as much from soldier than 3-4 new M72s. They didn't exactly tell us to stick our thumb into our ass and start crying if heavier AT-weapons such as Apilas aren't around. Like said: There is even change to cut it's track and render it immobile with M72. destruction isn't out of question either. MBT doesn't automatically mean newest and most modern beasts. Besides taking out IFV probably will require more than just one hit. There is quite much of evidence from this. If there isn't M72s around we would start to chop our explosive material from AT-mines, attach fuses to them and try that way. :) (yeah this starts to sound bit extreme and discomforting). Switching M136 to SMAW really isn't answer as i probably don't have that luxury all the time. Yet to me regular way of doing things is to issue at least two light launchers per one guy. Has been from days of OFP and i really don't see nothing logical against it.

Because they are not facing mechaniced enemy on their own. In my self got trained to be (also) AT-guy part of jaegerplatoon (light mobile infantry) while facing mechaniced or armored enemy. We by SOP are to face and fight directly also against armored vehicles. To us M136 would not be emergency weapon, but vital weapon which we would also use against armored vehicles mostly IFVs, but also against heavies. For heavier primary heavier weapons such as Apilas (in near future NLAW, or MBT-LAW) would be used. AGAIN: I have hauled 9-12 kilograms worth of AT-equipment when i'm expected to keep up with riflesquads on offense as part of rifleplatoon, main job is to hunt down armored vehicles in killzone of platoon (mostly heavy tanks there). Also i have hauled 2 M72s as part of riflesquads AT-pair composing of two guys both having multiple M72s. Rest of squad is to fire at enemy infantry while we as pair seek ways to engage enemy armor (mostly IFVs) in area of our squads killzone. Possible? Very much. Fun? Not. With gasmask? not even closely being fun. Necerssary? Very much indeed. What i haul is directly related to survival of rifleplatoon. Why i did haul all the stuff while riflemen had only rifle? Because i along few others formed AT-fist of unit, riflemen were free to engage enemy riflemen when we were to given responsibility to take out armored vehicles. Typical example: Armored vehicles moving along open areas while riflemen tried to use forests (comming in from flanks), both needed to be repelled. So there is need for defender to be in two places. Equality is not tactics. Also in ArmA. I dont' know how many times i've used seperated AT-units to overwatch area which armored vehicles would use. I'm not interested in ACE. I'm interested of how Vanilla ArmA2 works. Anyways enough for my part: Haven't played the game, but i believe my points are quite clear. If they are not, then i don't care.

Personally i'm not interested how they did it in Generation kill, i'm more interested on how I could do it, and i really don't see reason why i should settle just for one per my designated AT-guys in squad. Are ramboing AT-guys with multiple M136 a problem? Well restrict their access to M136! it isn't harder than that.

Ending was pretty marvelous. :D

You have any idea how cubersome SMAW is with like 3-6 shots? Or SAW with 1200 bullets, Barret with 120 shots? I dont' have factual knowledge for these weapons, but based on my Apilas+M72 vs 2xM72 combo and LMG experiences i'd say that M136 isn't that hard to be carried in multiple pieces. Reasons? Sling them to back and they are as much out of the way as possible, and their total weight isn't that bad. This is where simulation part hits the fan. M136 isnt' what it is designed to be, light weight system which shouldn't stress rifleman's movement too much unlike heavier and bigger systems. Right now it is heavy weight system in ArmA2-universe, because it's single shot takes far too many slots limiting stuff guy can carry along with single M136. While SMAW is light weight system, which enables more shots and more equipment carried along it. In MP this leads to fact that every guy hauls SMAW with loads of ammo along their rifle when ever they get change for it. In same class we could but protective vests escpacely with bulletproof plate inserts. Those don't come with out weak points. Limits movement and stances. Problems being in prone position while maintaining high readiness to engage targets? Has been reported (hands and neck becoming soar even numb quite soon). Not wishing to go prone in the first place? Has been noticed and remarked. Bit like with every piece of equipment which limits agility/flexibility of upper body (Radio-equipments inserted on back into frame comes to mind). But this is already quite out of the topic.

Great example of how things gets screwed up when trying to "simulate" something. Probably not bug but feature... Majorly retarded one if one is interested of my opinion. There should defindely be possiblity to carry two shots for M136 and reasonable amount of ammo for rifle. Yeah-yeah-yeah it weights. So does 6 belts of 5,56 ammo and SAW too, or freaking PKM or Barret... Or SMAW with few shots. How about Russian/Soviet RPGs? Are they just as screwed up?

It was possible in OFP and ArmA that just pure presence did give away player or AI. Some mods which boosted AI's "senses", so they started to have sort of "automatic reveal"-zone around them. Could be that, could be not.
-
ARGH! I'm not one to say which "report" is accurate and which is not as i dont' own the game! My goal is to tell people to not take everything seriously. This means both negative and positive remarks

It WAS hyped conserning ARMA. Same things will happen with ArmA2 i'm sure of it. People see for example micro-AI capable to do stuff which it actually isn't capable to do. Then they wet their pants and come in and write about micro-AI's powerz, which was only product of their own minds
-
Haven't read the thread, but i'd like to point out that after release of ArmA, there was all kinds of bullsh*t hype-talk around about AI getting suppressed etc by those who were actually playing the game! As soon as things started to calm down it was discovered (by more cynical players) that big part of talk indeed was without reality-basis. People just seems to get too impressed by the game at first and they start to "see things"... That is okay, i do it myself, we are all humans. But what i'm trying to state here is to "warn" people not to take all the talk too seriously. Again i haven't read posts in this topic (only first few).

That is probably the general principle, at least it sounds to be best way. But i really don't know. I post, quite rarely now days, under name of Secondbrooks in Battlefront.

EDIT: ARGH! I'm getting late from work...

Hard to say. As said FDF is strickly defensive by it's nature in public, so there is no single detail publicly available about subject "Finland on offense". Short answer from me would be: no. They lack mobility (we don't have much airlift capacity and terrain is mostly woods so they would need to travel by foot). Most natural place and task for them would be to secure advancing unit's flank areas and find and exterminate enemy's unit trying to dconduct recon and sabotage supply. That would be my guess. PS. I highly enjoy reading your writings here and specially in Battlefront's forums :)

I talk about reality of nature and wildlife and my experience based on that :) To make this more clear. We will have wild life in ArmA2, which means there are another creatures moving around than just OpFor. In ArmA2 from what i've gathered we have bushes which will make sounds maybe even move when something touches them or goes thru them. Bushes also obstruct visibility. Now imagine that you move in hostile ground, imagine that you see bush moving and hear sounds (from bush and something else) in your sector... Will you ignore it or start to scan it more observant? Answer should be quite clear ;)

Basically same as Ranger for citizen US and if i'm not incorrect Commando to citizen of UK. If explaining what Sissi is as unit and soldier: "Infantry soldier who is capable to live in wilds as animal of forest and has combat engineer's skills and usually operates in small groups". Or something like that. Then again word Sissi holds more than just soldiers and their units. Could be said that it's whole doctrine (if that is correct word) on it's own. And it's pretty wide word. Sissi-methods in which unit and soldier might have to start to use, from army level to individual soldiers. Sort of summary of unconventional methods, done in small units, behind enemy lines. I guess along those lines. I think one example how that word is being used by us: Taliban is called sissi-army. the way Taliban wages war is Sissi-war (atleast in Afganistan). Taliban groups are sissi-units. Individual Taliban in groups is sissi, and he and he's unit are using sissi-methods.

I've kept staring at rabbits and such small animals quite often, when trying to see is it animal or opponent. :) Also i've ignored them sometimes and later it was discovered that they were opponents circling around to our back :o

The ways are following: Like BIS has suggested long time ago they are just eye-candy. Little boost to immersion factor. Another way would be to either show hand signals in small screen on HUD... Or better yet radio chatter would keep on going like always (so orders are spoken), but radio chatter isn't heard by outsiders. Poster didn't say anything about dreaming ;) I see quite many problem areas in AI using hand signals, like leader exposes himself, leaders own actions are slowed down, leaders using hand signals almost 100% of the combat time when giving various orders and such one after another etc (tens of bigger and smaller problems). It's up to BIS to code that behavior well, will they be able to do that... Don't know. We will see.
-
That would be major mistake to be made. People are to watch flora and even fauna (in their sectors)... As that is from where enemy might emerge, not from the back of squad leader ;) So i'm also worried. If game's communications relies on fact that player HAS to see hand signals game don't work... Not even close. FOV is way too limited, and humans has ways to make sure every one gets the message. And another problem is AI getting itself killed when doing hand signals while they should be shooting at enemy which is shooting at them.

Or then BISs money has been spent in development and their pockets are too empty... Dunno, but could be. -

Russians in general seems to have quite loose policy on uniforms, i believe some of units are even encouraged to get various uniforms. White cloth in arm works well, even better than trusting to that dirty uniform, which from even close range might not be clearly different from enemy uniform. And besides it's quite common that there are uniforms which basically should be all 100% same, but dependant of manufacturer there can be tens of variations in colors and patterns. Our army had so-called M/62 outfit, to which it was nearly impossible to get even closely same looking pants and jacket, if that outfit didn't come directly from factor. -
I started my service in Recon Company... Or it was called Sissi Company back then (but trained recon-troops during that year), but got removed quite fast in middle of basic training when those who were willing and able to take part in ranger radio-operator training arrived to Recon Company, and i had asked to get into antitank side of business. You say you trained Recon NCOs, didn't they flip between recon and sissi training? So that 2005 was recon, 2006 sissi and again 2007 recon. Or has things changed and sissi training has been dropped off? ArmyGrunt: Oh yeah. Immola. Seems like selections have changed quite bit from what i last heard them to be like.

Because it's one more option for modders. Shooter-hunting mix... It can result some interesting sinventions. I have to agree that sadistic side of my self looks forward for deer herd and me with chopper with rocket launchers, or me directing fire of mortar platoon... Can't do that in hunting games as they are about hunting ;)
