    K9 for Vietnam Patrols

Charon (and others), found this link in my first search. Site looks to be very informative. I am going to read more there and then see what else I can dig up. (EDIT: site is about a movie but there is some neat info in there. Link at the bottom is much better.) http://www.war-dogs.com/ The Army Quartermaster Corps began the U.S. Armed Forces first war dog training during WWII. By 1945 they had trained almost 10,000 war dogs for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Fifteen War Dog platoons served overseas in World War II. Seven saw service in Europe and eight in the Pacific. In 1951 the responsibility for training military dogs was given to the Military Police Corps. Dogs continued to serve the armed forces with distinction in Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq and many recent contingency operations. (Source http://www.qmfound.com/War_Dogs.htm) Back to the search. Another great site Charon - http://www.qmfound.com/War_Dogs.htm) http://www.qmmuseum.lee.army.mil/dogs_and_national_defense.htm

Dogs were trained to defend their handlers, that did include bitting.n You you are correct though typically they were used for their noses and hearing.

Ok, realistically, you may not be able to make the dog say, walk up, open mouth, and bite. But I would think he could walk, lay down (pointing trouble), the bite would have to be simulated. He might only be able to walk up to unit (real close), then you would have to add damage to the unit (it was supposedly biting). Just thoughts. The dog could follow map clicks or the same way you tell a unit (while you, the leader, is in first person mode) to move (selecting unit F key, the clicking where you want it to go). Again, I am not an addon maker, but I do not think it would be that difficult. ------------ Man, does work distract from OFP business, or is it just me? 8)

I will see what I can dig up. Give me a week or so. You condition a dog to the type of environment(s) you want it to work in. My personal dogs have training dealing with the car wash, ATM, etc, urban types of situations they are likely to encounter. My female, she loves it when I go target shooting. She senses the energy being directed to targets is my guess. She gets real excited and then wants to go check out the target(s) with me. When working with an agitator armed with a starters gun (the person that wears the bite sleeve and gets bitten), she does not flinch when he shoots do to the fact that I conditioned her to gunfire. In wartime, it excited the dogs. You will see the basic same reaction on the TV show COPS when they have a dog. The dog gets excited my the sirens, shooting, gun fire... It is all in how you train them. Dog saluting... hum... My girl can learn almost anything I have tried to teach her. I will see what I can do. 8)
  9. Before anyone says search... I have searched, found old threads, and still no addon for the following (I do have the Doberman that will run around and nothing more). We need German Shepherds (the breed of dog) for our Vietnam patrols (I believe they used other breeds too). These dogs did serve the US Military in war time and still do today (some posts said dogs were not realistic to a combat sim). A K9 could do many (if not all) of the following: - smell an ambush (scent of enemy troops in the wind and on the ground) - track the enemy (scent of enemy troops in the wind and on the ground) - sniff out booby traps and bombs (gunpowder/others scents) - locate injured soldiers (scent in the wind and on the ground/blood) - attack/defend I know there are more useful skills but, that is all that come to mind at this moment. I would be happy to help if I could. The only thing I have to offer is that I am a dog trainer (part-time now) and I have read/studied a fair amount of material on militray dog training. My start into dog training came from a former Army K9 handler/trainer. Though I do not know the first thing about creating an addon, from the likes of the awesome stuff I have seen, this should be (hopefully) real easy for someone. My guess is, it would be similar to making a soldier, but instead of using a human skin (? map, whatever it is called), use the dogs skin/image/map. Thanks for taking the time to consider this request.

    Building OFP Computer

Now that you say that... I think I recall my bud telling me something like that. Though I did install the memory (only three slots total, one obviously vacant), and can see it (total number installed) in one of those admin screens where you can see system/computer info (Win2000). The game sure played better. Never once did the graphics wack out and lock up everything (grey screen I think they call it). Made it to the objective and back to base camp without a crash. It use to always... <radio chatter> Welp, that's me. Our recon unit is pulling patrol with a Marine sniper team along the ridge in the valley. Gotta run. Thanks again everyone for the feedback.

Thanks Wadmann. There are some similar. One was the same but, I did not see an answer. I have made a post there. Hopefully I can find something out. I thought there was supposed to be a lot of tall grass in the mission, which I am not seeing a lot of. Thanks everyone for their help. ------------------- Doh! Went back through it all. Think I found the answer. Thanks again Wadmann

    Building OFP Computer

Now this is what I am looking for. Thanks guys. All of this helps. Because I also believe it depends on MB etc. Thnk goodness I am not actually building it. A great friend, that gave me my current machine will be building it. He is a programmer so... It has been a while since he looked at gaming machine compnents so I am doing as much of the research that I can for him. Currently I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200. I just dropped a 512 chip in it so, with my 256 I am up to 768. Computer manager says I havean x86 Family 6 Model Stepping 2 AMD 1532 mhz processor. I am getting ready to see what the memory has done for me. Hopefully a lot. The autodetect showed an improvement. Just got home and figured I would check the thread real quick. Anymore feedback is greatly appreciated. --------------------------------- Yep... that helped. "Could still use more power", as Tim Taylor would say.

This is interesting, did not know you could do that. I will have search on that one later this evening unless you care to expain here. I have little time at work to search. I only have the time it takes to save large graphic files. 8) Which... it is done.

    Building OFP Computer

I have no problem building a new machine for OFP2, in fact, that is the plan. I have almost a good year to still enjoy OFP and I am getting gready. 8) I need higher framerates, more detail. CUrrently, I have to turn down detail so much, I am missing some of the finer aspects of Vietnam maps and units. My thanks to those that have offered/shared what they have. Hopefully there will be more. Thanks for the link AvonLady If anyone can run full datail, in say 1024 (32 bit) or higher, I would love to hear what is pushing it all. Thanks! Also, I agree with Ninja: To heck with winning the battle, I want to win the war!
