  1. Damn!

Any video card you would recommend on a budget that's faster than the 9800GT?

Thanks for your info by the way...

Used NV GTX460 or AMD 5770

Tried the GTX460 before ( Gigabyte one, super silent ) and it ran ArmA2 very well and the graphics looked darn nice even on mid settings, the 5000 series on the other hand also seem to run A2 excellent, new 6000 series arent faster as A2 uses a older shader model that the 5000 series supports better, it even ran ok on my old 4870 but if you get oen of those get the 1GB Vram variant otherwise you get Vram overflow artifacts in demanding missions

    /thread

    ;)

  2. Very important, using it and AF on max setting simply as anything else makes ArmA2 look rather uggly on my HD6950 because of the blocky AF filter... so lower settings are saddly no option if you want a smooth picture.

No idea why but in A2 the filter difference between Nvidia and AMD is extreme, cant see that extreme differences in other games.

  3. Welcome to the Forums Tactical_Fail, hope you dont do any tactical fails here :D

About patches, well kylania already summed it up, yet if you want to really enjoy ArmA2 get the Operation Arrowhead addon aswell especially as it adds more features than A2 ever had.

Also patching is pretty easy with it, install A2, install Arrowhead, install latest patchb you can get for A2+AO=Combined Arms

  4. I have read that is is possible to convert a 6950 to a 6970 with some software. Not sure how but no harm in Googling for it.

Mine runs on HD6970 level shader wise but i didnt flash it completely as from what i heard some components on the HD6950 may not be up to take the higher specs of the HD6970 and definatly they differ between the two cards.

Thats why i took the few extra frames that the shader unlock brings and played safe.

Also my card only OCs up to 880Mhz without freezes, raising voltage doesnt help much either and the boost is tiny so i have doubts that it could handle the HD6970 specs for a long time.

Together with a decent CPU the HD6950 runs the game smooth enough anyway and so far i didnt found another game as hungry as ArmA2, not even Crysis in highest settings.

Btw, the whole unlock thing only works on the reference design cards ( red black ones on blocky one fan design differing only by the sticker from each manufacturer ) and a few non reference cards if they have the dual bios switch.

Personally i use a Asus HD6950 Direct CUII, no reference design and huge as feck ( three slots ) but it is perfectly silent even under heavy load and keeps the card extremely cool with idles of like 35 degrees and most important it has a dual bios.

Not to mention that it is a real bargain looking at how well its made with metal body, silent fans, high quality components... i paid 220Eur when it was brand new, same price as a noisy reference design card back then.

Originally it was intended to switch to another bios and have more monitors on the card but as its not write protected you can flash it with either just shader unloack or whole bios of the bigger card... if it goes wrong you just flip the switch back, yet you loose your warranty anyway.

  5. Got a X4 965 running since yesterday and boost from a X4 9850 is very nice, double framerate in every A2 default bench so im very happy.

OCing it to 3,8Ghz didnt bring much or better said nothign at all so i asume my HD6950 is at its limits in these regards.

Offcourse if one needs even higher frames a i5 or i7 is the best choice but considering that the HD6950 and the X4 965 together were more or less 320Eur im pretty happy with the result and the price/performance ratio.

  6. That will never be fixed i guess and i hate it so much, nothing kills immersion better than a unit that kneels with its sidearm or even without one and doesnt want to move anymore, seems this happens most if you order units with sidearms to crouch.

Sometimes it helps to shoot them then heal them to get them back to normal but hey that cant really be the solution...

  7. Didnt read the whole thread but on a quick note i can say that offcourse ArmA2 doesnt run better with just a SSD in regards to Frames but since i use one ( Crucial C300 ) im very happy as i didnt had one texture or lod popup since then and i have everything on max.

So yes, for me it was a great investment in regards to enjoy the game more, for the frames i bought a X4 965 ( @3,8 now ) + HD6950 and now my frames are excellent enough for me to play very smooth without problems.

  8. LIte versions have lo quality textures and sounds.

This is how the full version Units of BAF look like:

    http://imgur.com/laUnt]http://i.imgur.com/laUntl.jpg

They´re the highest quality units BIS has produced so far, maybe save the new ones for Arma 3.

The PMC ones are a disappointment, though, at least for me they were. And like Dice said, full DLCs also get missions, campaigns and maps, which lite versions don´t have.

True, if anone is a visual guy and cares for little details the BAF units are sheer amazing and definatly the best units so far, its amazing how detailled and well textures these are.

These alone were worth the price

  9. Receiving the X4 965 today and cant wait to install it, offcourse if isnt comparable to a i7 in any way but for me it was a option since i plan to keep the PC at least another year and it cost me 100Eur.

Also i hope the change from a Phenom 1 X4 9850 are really noticeable especially with slight OC ( 9850 allowed 200Mhz+ max... ).

Anyone made that or a similar cpu change and can tell me what to expect?

  10. Goona try this out later, been a while since i changed any setting in the Vision Control Center.

While were at it, is there any way to get rid or at least lower the extreme grain on thing slike gras or trees when using anything lower han max AA settings in ArmA2:CO.

As soon as i set it a tad lower than max it just looks pretty uggly on my HD6950, noticed the ATI filter be a bit less crisp than the Nvidia one before in some games but never that extreme like in ArmA2:CO

Heres a screen Flattermann once sent me when we discussed this

    http://imageshack.us/f/201/arma2oa2011021110290836.png/

Btw, he mentioned that after he switched Morph filtering of he had a great fps increase.

  11. All this reminds me of the good ol OFP days where the Orcs battled the RHS dwarfs and things like a release with textures and parts of a model used that we never released and such things.

And back then it was like it is now on modDB, general opinion isw, wtf, let the man do his stuff as long as we get a mod or addon in the end we dont even care where it comes from.

Or even better the hay why arent you happy he used your stuff approach.

This will probably never change, majority never made something themselfs and cant imagine how long certain things take so they dont know how it is to work on something that long and someone just rips it in minutes and gets the fame for it.

The fun thing is that in some cases if asked for permission it wouldnt even be a problem like we at RHS also gave some RTS mods ok to use some older models.

As soon a swe finally release our infantry i already see the ports and rips comming :(

Hopefully the ModDB guys take notice and finally kick his troll butt out... makes me even want to delete our page there if thats how it works on ModDB.

  12. Hmm currently im also thinking about a lil CPU upgrade but when i read about people still having troubles with A2 on a X4 955 it makes me wonder.

Currently i use a X4 9850 ( 2,5ghz ) which was already crap when it came out and sucks in ArmA2 as you really see how it bottlenecks my slightly tuned HD6950 2GB ( Asus Direct CUII, perfectly silent ), so currently i got a bit money saved for such stuff and consider two options:

    - Get a X4 955 and OC it as far as possible

    - Get a X6 1090T and OC it as far as possible

With Latest Bios both are possiblew on my old Gigabyte GA-MA78-DS3H rev 1.0, in case of the X6 also the 1100T but why pay more if you cna OC it.

Judging by some benchmarks i saw the X6 could perform a tiny bit better but possibly not that much better to justify 30-40Eur more.

So far as good as all games run very ok on my current rig but ArmA2 in high settings troubles me and yet to me is the most important one.

So X4? X6? Both with OC offcourse?

Next year a whole new A3 PC will be build and that will either be a Sandy or a Bulldozer but thats still a while.

    Current System:

    Win7 64,

    Gigabyte GA-MA78-DS3H rev 1.0,

    X4 9850 2,5Ghz,

    4Gigs Ram,

    HD6950 with unlocked Shaders,

    Crucial C300 128GB,

    Spinpoint F1 for other games.

To me it seems witha decent CPU this rig should still work fine for a good bit of time so please someone give me some advice :)

  13. Hey BIS i have a collection ranging from OFP with all expansions over ArmA1 with its expansion to ArmA2 with OA and all DLCs... what discount do i get? :p

Yet a nice deal for the ones that prefer to buy their software in digital form only.

  14. While im tempted to buy it i have to agree with Lee, in such cases i would always prefer to buy a retail copy especially if it is such a collection.

But Bis doesnt need to be sad as i bought all their PC products before in nice boxes... apart from the DLC that is.

    EDIT

seems i didnt read Maruks statement completely... will buy the retail one later :)

  15. Are you guys planning on altering the available eyewear for 'West\CWR2 Men' faction's identity classes for the final release?

Seeing blokes in 1985 with ballistic glasses and Wiley X wraparound shades is a bit odd is all. :D

Oh yes please, think i requested that a good while ago too.

IN mid 80s we need something like this:

    http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1400/1282454118_379c2fba18_o.jpg

Normally also should be a standard selection in A2 id say.

  16. cwr2 demo is real great , brought back memories in a better engine of arma2 ;)

Definatly, i was playing some MP last night and the overall feeling of the coops was just great and had more immersion than i had in all official releases for A2.

Oh BIS i wish you would rather do another Coldwar game instead of the Futuristic A3 :(

  17. Wow, how could i miss that yesterday

Congrats to the CWR team on this great release, cant wait to coem home to play it.

Those were the days... the demo back then was a pure blast for me as it was so different and new, yet my PC back then was crap and so i played it over and over at a friends house who was quite annoyed till i finally bought my own new PC to finally play it at home all day.

Including save and load times of over 5 minutes with the Ram i had back then :p
