What do we have to gain by getting Georgia to kill Russian troops and start a shooting war? Â We gave them some uniforms, guns and body armor, told them how to march in a straight line, and in return we got some warm bodies for Iraq and their gratitude. Â This was good for us because they have some oil running through their country, and we want some. They, on the other hand, tried to assert control over this province of theirs and ended up fighting RUSSIA, for Christ's sake. Â Hard to believe it's a 1960s-era proxy war started by US advisors for the sole purpose of pissing the Russians off. Â We want their cooperation on other global issues so why antagonize them? The whole backstory of the province is another issue, but them's the facts, so far as it's possible to know. Utilitarianism, sir, utilitarianism! Edit: unless of course the whole point is to bait Russia into this little exchange and do exactly what everybody's trying to do - paint them as maniacs bent on re-establishing their old empire. Heh, now that I really think about it, since it's not that much of a stretch to convince people that's what Russia is up to, it's not a bad plan.
-
Of course I'm not saying that. That's the point of the thread. It's just bizzare that people keep trying to quantify how morally superior one country is to another when both are full of shitbags. Actions can certainly be right or wrong but let's not pretend that morality, compassion or some sense of noble humanitarianism ever guided anybody's national policy.
-
LOL, there really is no difference nowadays between the US and Russia. Â We both think we hold the moral high ground over the other and have no problem kicking the shit out of smaller countries to prove it. Â We both support "freedom" and "justice" when it benefits the corrupt, tyrannical people in our respective capitals. Â We have a vested interest in petroleum, and so do you. Â We call you guys out for invading Georgia because we sell shit to the Georgians (weapons, training, etc). Â You guys call us out about threatening Iran because you sell shit to the Iranians (the same). Â Our leaders want an empire, your leaders want an empire. Â We have a powerful military, you have a powerful military. Â Our citizens are pissed off about the economy, health care, and our standing in the world, your citizens are pissed off about the economy, health care, and your standing in the world. Â Our citizens are ignorant, your citizens are ignorant. It's all the same. Â Enough with the pissing contests over who's more moral, more enlightened, or more just than the other guy. I rarely play the "we're all just people" card but fuck, this is getting rediculous.

Just reinstalled ArmA to give this new patch a try and I was impressed by the new CTI. Me and a few buddies used to spend entire weekends in MFCTI 1.16 and from the looks of it Warfare is all that and more. Thanks for finally bringing back the best game mode ever created for old OFP! Now I just need to upgrade this wheezing 7600gt and I'll be all set...
-
Short answer: no. You can play CTI alone by creating a server and making sure the AI is in all the other slots, but CTI doesn't play like a campaign and there's no saving. CTI usually degenerates into small groups of men and units running around on their own capturing and re-capturing empty towns. It is already heavily scripted but there's no overall team strategy...the AI won't make coordinated offensives or anything like that. The dynamic campaigns that are available play a bit differently but the ones I tried early on in the 'unscripted war' craze usually end up as You v The World against more randomly scattered, uncoordinated enemies. most of them are actually multiplayer missions so the player can respawn after being killed, and a multiplayer savegame system has been built but I never got it to work properly. In order to get the enemy to behave in any coordinated manner it has to be a scripted, linear campaign, and that's the exact opposite of what you're looking for.

It's been a bit weird today, yes, but it's still there.

The enemy tanks are going to get into the town no matter what you do so you might consider mining the town itself (I think there were mines in that ammo crate, anyway) and taking as many LAW rockets as you can carry. Pop those BMPs from behind buildings and whatnot, then do your damndest to scavenge enough AT ammo to take out the T-72s. You might consider taking some AT weapons and dropping them in a house so you can duck in and retrieve them later when the tanks crash you. IIRC when I beat it a loong time ago I left the Hind for last since he's not likely to find you among all the buildings. Stinger him once you've cleared out the tanks and infantry, then if I remember right a PBR came and got me.

Wow, CWC troops look good. Can't wait for a non-modern replacement pack with the latest and greatest scripting stuff. Only nitpick: most pics I've seen of guys wearing the Y-harness over the PASGT have the shoulder straps threaded underneath the shoulder padding of the vest, rather than over the top of the whole thing as in your pic: Clicky Feel free to ignore this trivial point, but IIRC it's that way on HYK's original textures and models.

Dawn Raiders - A Command Engine Mission
AdmiralKarlDonuts replied to AfrographX's topic in USER MISSIONS
Gave this a whirl this afternoon because St. David occupies a permanent place in my addons folder, as do HYK's troopers, so why not... Landed, started sending my squads out towards the designated choke-points but apparently was not fast enough in doing so because we got mobbed from every direction by BRDMs and Urals. I didn't see much by way of friendly AT fire and things basically deteriorated to a laggy slideshow. Had no real idea of how the southern firefights were going because I was too busy defending myself. Died within a couple of minutes and called it quits. Looks like it would be a lot of fun, I might try again. -
I've been drifting in and out of OFP over the last year or so and just downloaded the RHS 1985 VDV guys today. I was very impressed and immediately remembered that RHS did a bunch of other units too...only to realize that they were all Russian Federation units, not Soviets. What other good downloads are there for c. 1985 Soviet infantry units? Anything of the same quality of these VDV guys? I'd like my HYK 1985 US infantry to have some contemporary opponents, and I vaguely remember some ORCS East replacements from like 2 years ago but obviously they won't be of the same quality of these fairly new VDVs.

Nice looking units here. If you have any intention of tweaking them at all, might I suggest suspenders and some rifle ammo pouches or a simple chest rig? A bit more sprucing up and we might have the basis for the whole Nogova army here.

Pentagon ‘three-day blitz’ plan for Iran
AdmiralKarlDonuts replied to jerryhopper's topic in OFFTOPIC
Best solution: get the hell out of the Middle East. We're wasting time, money, and young men and women on a war we didn't need to fight in the first place. If we leave Iran alone, we won't radicalize their population and prompt Mr. Windbreaker (he does wear a lot of those, sorta like Georgie actually...) to beef up his military and pursue nuclear weapons. They'll continue supplying the Iraq insurgency but the simple solution to that problem is for our 'leaders' to stop kidding themselves and withdraw. Iran will never be a friend but if we refrain from poking them with a sharp stick I think they'll be content to limit their attacks on us to the verbal variety. Attacking Iran, fortunately, is nearly impossible since we're spread too thin, have downsized our military, and have by several accounts sent so much equipment and ammunition to Iraq that there's literally none left anywhere else. ANG units have been leaving their gear there for the next units for years and a buddy of mine recently showed me a report that US law enforcement agencies are having trouble getting enough ammo to even train because they're using so much in Iraq. edit: ammo shortage http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070817/D8R2UKLG0.html reporting contributed by the Associated Press. -
I was looking through a several-year-old military magazine I found in a doctor's office today and a glossy personal photo of a Russian Krivak-class frigate fell out from between the pages. Wierd! Does anybody know of a list of ships of the class with hull numbers so I can find its name, for curiosity's sake? Globalsecurity doesn't list hull numbers so no luck there... Pic

Identifying a Russian ship by hull number
AdmiralKarlDonuts replied to AdmiralKarlDonuts's topic in OFFTOPIC
Wow, thanks. I hadn't even thought to use the FFG prefix, I hadn't ever seen any non-American ship referenced that way. I tried stuff like "krivak 942" and came up empty. I wonder why it was stuck in this magazine though? Edit: she was decommissioned and sunk at the pier in 1995 -
PMC AEC islands released!
AdmiralKarlDonuts replied to Snake Man's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Now all we need is a three-island CTI -
Thanks for the recommendations and PMs everybody, they were helpful.

I've been browsing around the forums and the wiki pages for a decently-sized ArmA clan based in the US, preferably well organized but not totally nutty in terms of 100% adherence to military protocol ingame. Me and a couple of buds are looking to get into the clan scene for an organized game or two every week but don't want to go totally overboard with offline training and such. Any suggestions?

Greatest movie ever! I love how the sound for all the hand-to-hand fighting scenes consisted of four effects in a sound board with some guy wildly mashing the buttons so they repeat and cut each other off constantly. Unhh! Oooh! Thud! Smack! Be to watch all the first scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....search= And the other one with a different guy as Rambo, with even worse sound and sped-up action scenes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....search= This is a goddamn goldmine! Funniest thing I've seen in weeks.

So my choices are a) public servers where everybody runs around like retards or b) a unit that requires training, proper radio protocol, and has regulations pertaining to how you're supposed to drive trucks? Isn't there just a group of people who get on TS and play with some semblance of teamwork without all the pretend-Marines stuff?

Question for anybody: does anybody know if the model for the Javelin launcher is going to be fixed? I've mentioned before that the CLU should be hidden when it's on your back so it doesn't obscure your vision when prone.
-
As of the 1.07 beta patch it appears that the Javelin missile's behavior is finished (it top-attacks like it's supposed to and the AI can fire it without problems) but the model could really use some tweaking. When you're prone the CLU (optics part of the launcher) totally obscures your vision. I suggested that they make the CLU part of the launcher like the grenade on the RPG launcher, as in it's only visible when you've got it in your hands, not on your back. Guy addmagazine "Javelin"; guy addweapon "javelin"

On the M!6, I think you're right...something to do with the water causing a pressure increase in the barrel which with the direct gas system was a serious problem. Anyhow I think it was the H&K P11 actually that was the underwater pistol. It fired with an electric charge, had something like 4 rounds only, and had to be shipped back to the factory to be reloaded. As for the Russian underwater rifle, it's the APS, which is actually a gas-operated 5.66mm dart gun which was not supposed to be fired out of the water.

If it's an addon, it's doable if you're familiar with configs, yes. If you're talking default BIS units like at least I assumed, no.

How do I make my own groups?

I vaguely remember reading something that M16s and other small-caliber weapons can have problems coming out of water...something about having to hold the bolt open for a minute or so to make sure the water's drained before using so the charging handle doesn't blow back into your teeth when you try to fire. I believe it was in a Nam SEAL book that I saw this. AKs are as usual supposed to be more tolerant to that kind of thing IIRC.
