    Igi-2: codemasters sign sas hero as military cons

    Military consultants won't make a game. I'm sure that many of the suggestions for realism they give are utterly ignored by the dev team, saying it's too difficult or it isn't fun, usually synonymous in game developement. I played the IGI demo and it failed to strike me as a half-decent game. The graphics were bad, there was no real reason for 'stealth,' since all the enemies were idiots, and did I mention the AI sucked? I don't know how they managed to get a second try, but after the first I have virtually no expectation of a decent game. As for an SAS 'hero' working as a game consultant, why is it such a big deal? It beats walking 100 miles through the desert while hallucinating.

    If somebody screws up, it's their duty to uphold our country's dignity (assuming that still exists) by suffering the consequences. To consider ourselves any better than terrorists, we'll have to practice what we preach.

    Sound freezes

    At one point OFP was free of hard freezes on my comp. Then after a while that changed. So I eventually completely reformatted my HD and reinstalled Win98SE. Got the 'latest' drivers for my Voodoo3 and SBLive! Value cards and installed OFP. Patched to 1.46. Got DirectX 8.1. The freezes are still there. Originally, Directx 8.1 stopped my sound freezes cold, and I could play OFP for days if I felt like it (not that I did, of course). Now It freezes at apparently random intervals and I have to reboot. Don't have a VIA. Processor is an Intel PIII 600 mhz with 128 mb RAM. This is killing me, I want to play OFP again damnit.

    Well, I haven't had a crash in days, so I might be free of the problem. I did change my swap file from 2 to 5 gigs. I also turned on sound hardware acceleration, which was apparently deactivated before. I still don't know exactly what did the trick, since I was desparate and just changed all sorts of settings in a very un-scientific fashion, but it worked.

    Heh, the first time I played after 1.46 patch I thought "WTF, this training is difficult now!" Then I retried and it worked. Very buggy. It's sad that so many people will end up returning flashpoint after the training mission

    Surrendering solders?

    I think surrendering would be a nice feature. Even let the players do it, and instead of having to get past that extremely difficult mission, they could get captured and possibly go through a randomized 'escape' mission like in the campaign (not randomized in the campaign).

    Better vehicle crash physics. It seems like some cars collide properly only with specific other vehicles. Ability to shoot out of vehicles. Not very useful, but damn it would be fun. General engine improvements. Less clipping, more cities, better AI. Oh yeah, and I think it'd be fun to have a more civilian-based game on the OFP engine. and one more thing, PISTOLS

    Realism experts correct me if I'm off here, but it doesn't quite seem right that Shilkas not only attack ground targets, but do so with deadly efficiency. Â Sometimes I would swear the single most dangerous Soviet armor to ground troops is a mobile AA battery. Â I remember noticing this especially in the second to last mission, where I would HAVE to neutralize shilkas before I shot the scud, or they would target me within seconds and kill me with no chance of escape. Â Are shilkas supposed to be that effective against ground targets? Edited for coherency, and be glad it is.

    The SBLive! Â cards are famous for causing those problems. Â It's interesting though. Â After pushing random buttons for a while earlier today I was able to play through 6 or so campaign missions without a freeze, and then (gasp) actually quit OFP for the first time in ages. I'll consider trying the sound thing, if my problem isn't solved already (wishful thinking is nice sometimes). Edit: Of course, chances are it has *something* to do with directx, since it hasn't been the same (read: vaguely stable) since version 7.0. It could be that directx doesn't like glide, since I seem to get fewer crashes when using d3d (egh).

    Anyone ever completed "convoy"?

    The official "Plissken Patented" strategy. 1. Get an M21 and LAW. 2. Watch the fireworks as your convoy gets it. 3. Clean house with the M21. 4. Ehh, can't remember the rest. It was ages ago. I beat the mission, but I think it involved many loads, retries, and Max Payne style bullet dodges.

    I *do* have extra RAM laying around. Regrettably, I'm pretty sure it isn't the kind I have in currently, and it's also kinda . . . . slow.

    Gah, I don't play OFP multiplayer. I have little faith in the netcode. I haven't done anything to the swap file since reinstalling win98, but I have 18 gigs free space. Oh crap, what IS the swap file exactly? I went to alter what I thought it was and it actually turned out to be the virtual memory setting. No addons either.

    The sound does the broken record bit and OFP stops functioning entirely. It almost seems to happen after a certain period of time, since it could happen anywhere from a cutscene to the instant I start a mission. I do, of course, have everything endtasked.

    True, but I kinda like to use first person just for the realism factor. I turn out when I don't think there is a risk of being shot at but I turn in otherwise. It takes getting used to, but it's pretty easy to just follow the road even through a 2 cm sq hole.

    I don't know, if there's a team of infantry, which there should be, the tank doesn't have time to return fire anyways. Man, I wish we had a soviet AA battery that wasn't armored.

    Okay, so shilkas have light armor. Â However, in context of Operation Flashpoint, I don't see why tanks could possibly be more useful than Shilkas in any circumstance whatsoever. Â Especially with the shilka ability to spot infantry at long ranges and chew up any tank in seconds while follow up shots from a tank take much longer. Â However, in real life, the shilka is not the only unit used on the battlefield. Â I assume there is a reason for this besides cost. Â The crews also seem unrealistically alert. The thing is, no unit in OPF can survive a barrage from a shilka. Â I can kill them just fine, thank you, but it just doesn't add up for me. Â Even infantry don't stand a chance once spotted since the guns have a blast radius large enough to kill a squad. Edit: I'm probably just on crack, but I at least like to know why they can kick my arse so easily.

    Here's an idea. How about you military freaks shut up with this 'mine is bigger than yours' crap and adress the original post instead of rehashing the same opinion over and over. About the islands being fictional it was just something I'd heard. Also I'd never seen the islands on any map in my life, but okay, doesn't matter either way. I'll say again that OPF is about U.S. armed forces, so it would seem a little off to change the specops missions to SAS. They could've made a whole campaign where you only play as SAS but since the cold war was mainly between the US and Russia they decided to have you playing our armed forces. However, I'd say the whole SAS vs. US specops is a very minor point in the post afro made. Try reading the rest of it.

    Yeah, civilian vehicles are absolutely worthless in a military sim because we all know the army NEVER fights in towns. Yes, we all know that real armies fight on open fields and fire in volleys. Oh wait, that was in 1700. One thing devil, you say you're done with it, so why not release? To teach people like us a lesson?
