  1. Hello! If you use the 'addWeapon' command in a script, when you start the mission, you will start with no weapon selected. I got around this with most weapons, by using the 'selectWeapon' command, however, it doesn't seem to work for weapons with grenade launchers! BTW, OFP executes non-scripted commands before scripted ones (scripts are done last)

    Ranting

Things get to me. When something gets to me, I like to have a rant... get it off my chest. Thoughts?

    weapon models in hand

I think it's a great idea, for OFP2. Only thing about it is, you'd need a Cray to run the game... I mean, I've got an Athlon 900 and I have to play with most of the detail right down... (to get a decent frame rate). Sure, computers now are more powerful, but I recon that even with a Super Ninja Bastard PC, you won't be able to run OFP with max detail, 1600x1200x32, FSAA and view distance set to 5000m will you? (And play a mission as big as Battlegrounds) I think that BIS has done a great job of balancing visuals/playability/performance. Thing about 'other games' is they don't have masive, open, playing areas with the ability to have 100's of objects, players, vehicles... A great idea for OFP <2>.

CM/BIS: Get the hint? WE CAN\'T PATCH TO 1.30

Huh, you'd love to <think> I just work for money. Well, you're wrong. I don't work for the money, I work because it's a job that does give me satisfaction. Just because <you> work for money, don't assume that everyone else works for money. You call me american, when it's you who say I'm only doing it for the money? Work that one out. Read my posts again. Do I, or do I not, quite clearly state, the reason I was ranting, was because of the constant, unjustified attacks on the people at BIS and the parallel that has with my job? Read my posts again. Do I, or do I not, clearly state that people who come on making these attacks do not want to be helped, because if they did, they would give information required to help fix their problem. Read the Troubleshooting FAQ. It quite clearly states that if you have a problem there is a procedure for you to follow. Why is this procedure in place? Read the Troubleshooting FAQ and you will see that it quite clearly states that people who have followed this procedure may not have had their problems resolved immediately, but it has helped the Dev team to fix the problem in the end. From dictionary.com: ####### n 1: (obscene) insulting terms of address [syn: bastard, cocksucker, s**t, mother f**ker, motherf**ker, mother, prick, son of a b*tch, SOB] 2: excretory opening at the end of the alimentary canal [syn: anus, arse, arsehole] ass·hole (shl) n. Vulgar Slang 1. The anus. 2. A thoroughly contemptible, detestable person. 3. The most miserable or undesirable place in a particular area. As my friends and colleagues will know that I am neither of these definitions, it is fair to assume that when he called me an #######, he was being abusive. Again, I will go back to the fact that I did indicate I was having a rant. If <you> don't like it, why don't <you> stop reading?

Would VBS result in a better netcode for Op Flash?

Hmm... that doesn't sound like bandwidth on your lan... sounds more like horse power of you server... are you using a dedicated server? Or are you playing on the server? If it's the later, you'll need to _really_ cut back on the detail, to free-up more processor time to do the servery-bits. You'll also need 512MB of RAM - you cannot afford the game to start using the pagefile as this WILL start slowing things down.

Would VBS result in a better netcode for Op Flash?

I don't think it would be so much of an issue - being the US government, I would imagine that they wouldn't spare any when it came down to the servers... Gigabit over copper... who needs efficient net code?
  7. Is accuracy the principal behind battle rifles? Where as the principal behind and assualt rifle, is to saturate an area with fire, so you're bound to hit something?

    Community Pessimism

I'm with Uziyahu IDF... check my rant on the tech support forum (if you can find it hidden away). I have to say Canis, that I also agree with you... in some ways... First... the 2-8 players, was a demonstration, based upon, admittedly, dodgy networking code. I personally have played maps with 16+ players and it was absolutely fantastic! Version 1.30 is a vast improvement, check it out... BIS have gone a long way to support development, I mean, there <is> an editor built into the game (you don't even have to load a different *.exe). They have released a command reference, they have released a lip-syncing tool... OK, they haven't release full information on mission editing, but then, there are so many people out there in the community that have gathered together bits and bobs that it is possible to create a full mission, even a full campaign. I love OFP. If only I had the time to sit down and really get to grips with designing some missions...

CM/BIS: Get the hint? WE CAN\'T PATCH TO 1.30

LMAO... Hmm... I think you called me an #######, didn't you? Isn't that abusive? Isn't that in breach of the terms of service? I made a general statement about the way people make posts on the troubleshooting forum. I did not pick an individual who I didn't agree with and make a personal attack on them. I DID indicate that I was ranting and as such, what I say should be taken with a pinch of salt. I am here to help. Here to help those who want to be helped. Someone who makes an attack on BIS because they can't get the game to work, rather than stating their full system configuration and the simptoms they are experiencing, is not wanting to be helped.

    SDK

Hmm... I seem to remember one of the development team saying the reason they weren't releasing certain tools / SDK, is because they don't exist... It would be a shame if there was no SDK, but to be honest... I think the maps are different enough and there are enough user-developed mods and tools to give all the veriety that you need when designing missions.

CM/BIS: Get the hint? WE CAN\'T PATCH TO 1.30

What I was having a rant about, was the fact that people don't come onto the troubleshooting forum saying: "I've got this problem, these are the simptoms, this is the kit I've got, anybody know how I can fix it?" They come on saying: "It's not working. I don't care why it's not working, because it's not my problem, it's the people that wrote it, it's all their fault." How, pray tell, does: "Hey BIS Get the hint: People can't upgrade to v1.30" help to fix the problem? It doesn't. It is a negative, destructive attack on the guy that have worked their bollocks off to develop this game. Yeah, I work on telephone tech support. Yeah, I get people hanging up on me, because I won't give them what they want. Reason? Because they haven't paid for it! No, I'm not crabby. Y'know why people _do_ get crabby? Because they get customers through who's first words out of their lips are "You know I've been waiting in the queue for 20 minutes and I think It's disgusting. I've paid X thousand pound for this computer and I don't expect to have to sit on the phone paying to have it fixed." Do you know what that achieves? It wastes 1, 2, sometimes 3 minutes. Does it help to fix the problem in ANY way? No Does it make the poor customer who is patient, who understands that you sometimes have to wait, who's stuck in the queue for minutes longer because someone's blowing off, destructively at the call handlers? No Does it make me, the call handler, the person who goes to work for YOUR benefit, feel happy, more inclined to help you? No. Does it mean that I will not fix your problem? No. I am a professional. If it's broken and you're entitled to service, I will try to fix it. I will always try to fix it and always to the best of my ability. Arrogant? OK, perhaps I come accross that way. Maybe it's because I'm confident in my own abilities and I'm not affraid to say so. Is that what you call arrogant? That's what I call insensetive, not arrogant. It's interesting that you assume that I've got no experience with computers or tech support and that I'm on minimum wage. LMAO and for you to assume I work for a 2 bit company, now _that's_ arrogant. First, Dixons Stores Group is the largest electronics goods retailer in Europe. We sell more PCs in the UK than anyone else (about 38% of all PCs sold last year were bought from a DSG store). Second, I have 9 years experience with PCs and I am definitely NOT on minimum wage. I have spent 12 months TRYING MY d*amnDEST, no matter what ABUSE I recieve, to fix PCs and very rarely getting a customer who appreciates <just how difficult> telephone tech support is. The reason I had a rant, is because I'm sick of people who have no notion of, no care for, how their actions impact upon others. I know full well, that if you constantly turn round and say "it's not good enough, it's not good enough", people will stop trying to help you and just turn round and say "f**k you! If you're never satisfied, what's the point of me trying?" What gives you the right to attack the people who live only to serve? The people that do things for YOUR benefit? "I've paid Å35 for this game." LMAO! If it were me, I'd give you your money back, just to stop your negative, destructive attacks on the people who wrote the game.
  15. M14 is technically a battle rifle. Why was the M249 mentioned? This was not introduced until the very late 80's/early 90's - a full 2 decades after the M14 was withdrawn from service and over 3 decades after the BAR was withdrawn. One reason the bad guys don't die with one hit to the chest, is because if THEY die with one hit YOU die with one hit! Simple. If you're having problems making 1 hit 1 kill, you need more practice. I think people that desperately want 'better' snipper rifles are just beardy puffs that are scared to run at the enemy screaming "Die Bastard! DIE!" because they may get killed. It's a game. Play it like one. You wanna make beardy sniper shots, play UT. OFPs strength is that it's a squad-based grunt game. None of this "one man army" s**t that just doesn't happen in real life. (NO, it doesn't - look at the Gulf, the SAS were deployed in 8 man teams). THAT's what's good about OFP as someone else pointed out on a similar thread - the M21 is not there for true snipers, it's there to give a squad extended reach on the battlefield. Snipers are just boring, cause all they do is find a hole and lay there. Yawn. I played this all-sniper mp game once, it was interesting, but <I> won the game, because <I> was not a beardy-boring sniper git, I ran upto people and got stuck in. (with an M21) It's not what you've got, it's how you use it.

CM/BIS: Get the hint? WE CAN\'T PATCH TO 1.30

You mean <you> can't patch to 1.30. I can. I've never had a problem, other than the 1.29 to 1.30 that BIS were aware of. Ask yourself: If NOBODY was able to upgrade to 1.30, how come there are so many people playing it? <RANT> I'm sick to death of people saying it's all x's fault because I can't get it to work. I support PCs for PC World, I hear "These computers are crap, because they keep crashing and they run really slow." all day, every day. I know FULL WELL that has f*** all to do with the machines, yeah, sure, sometimes they're faulty, things break, but most of the time, it's because the user has installed tons and tons of sh*te and they've got system resources of about 60% (I've seen 43% in the call centre before - no s**t!) or they've installed a RAM upgrade from some dodgy computer fair or they've got some guy in a 'local computer shop' who knows even less about computers than the staff in PC World, who's installed a CD-RW or a second hard drive and totally re-configured the system, instead of just adding it as an easily removed upgrade. If your having problems, stop and ask yourself: "Someone else can get it to work, so why can't I?" I'm sure you'll work it out very quickly, if you don't, here's the answer you're looking for: You know f*** all about computers and need to learn more. Once you work that one out, you'll be on the way to enlightenment and a point in time where you'll be able to fix this kind of problem yourself. I've got a Abit KT7A, a board that has been highly recommended by many, MANY, independant testers. It uses a Via chipset. Guess what, I've never had a problem with the board. I've had a problem with dodgy IDE cables and dodgy sound card drivers (SBLive!), but never a problem that was caused by the chipset. Why? Is it because I'm lucky? HA! I'm one of the unluckiest men alive! I have a reputation at work for being the #1 f***eruperrer of my own kit - I can make my computer stop working just by lucking at the d*amn thing! Upside of this? If it's broke, I can fix it. That's what I do and I do it well. I don't have a problem patching OFP, ####, my 14 year old bro can patch a game without it going tits up, and that's on a system with a Via 686A south bridge, which are REALLY, REALLY bad! (and that's putting it politely) Learn to understand how computers work or find someone who does and stop going on about <your> problem like it's <everyones> problem, because it isn't. If it was, I'd be the first to kick off. (And if you don't understand what I mean by <RANT> </RANT>, learn to speak a little HTML) </RANT> There, now that I've got that off my chest, anyone actually have a problem they want someone to help them fix?
  18. ScreamingWithNoSound

I need a patriotic show of hands!

They don't have physics in the game for "plastic around the barrel melting" in OFP do they? On a serious note, stoppages is something that's missing from OFP... OK, i suppose, in real life, you don't get stoppages that often (unless you're using an SA-80), well, assuming you clean your weapon regularly, as you're supposed to. I wanna see the SA-80, for the sake of seeing it... I've got the Para / SAS addon that someone did (re-textured Russian troops with red berrets, very cool) all I need now is an SA-80 and I'll be in heaven...

    Request: SCROUNGE Command

On the assumption that AI will use a full clip, before re-loading, is should be possible to write a script, that would cause them to pickup ammunition automatically - it could be done so that they would only go 20 metres to find ammo. In a similar way, is should be possible to put a repeating trigger/script on an ammo crate, so they could automatically pickup ammo. I must agree that issuing orders for men to pickup ammo is a real pain, I would certainly like to see the AI use a bit more initiative when you tell them to re-arm.

    British army

*sigh* The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is the correct title of the country known as the UK. Great Britain and Britain, rightly or wrongly, as a shortened term. The British Ilses is the name of the group of islands that makes up the UK mainland and outlying islands, such as Shetland. The Island of Britain is the correct name for the UK mainland. Basic training for British Army is 16 weeks. If memory serves correctly, USMC is 9 weeks. I'm not going to comment on USMC vs RMC, as RMC are more-or-less a special forces unit.

Wisdom you are obviously not familiar with Win2K. W2K's task monitor can show usage for each CPU independently. I'm in a ranty mood, so I'm gonna dumb down what Ender said (cause I like to see my own typing, K?) Modern games programming for Windows, is, by it's very nature, multi-threaded. As most PCs that play games are going to have 1 CPU, then those threads need to be arranged and optimised for 1 CPU, this, sometimes, can cause problems when you try to run on 2... is it Q3, or UT that runs like a dog on 2 CPU, unless activate the 2 CPU architecture/change the *.exe?

    Annoying Crosshairs

LMAO! What a load of s**te! "Can't use the floating weapon sight on a target 600m away." WTF are you on about? Are you some kind of a whinging puff? FFS! Put it on Veteran and start playing the game properly! Jesus. "Can't make deliberate kill shots." WTF!?!?!? That's the biggest load of s**te I've heard in years! Despite what poloticians say, the object of war is to kill your enemy! An interesting side note... the SA80 is sighted, so that you can aim at the chest of your target and it will hit them in the head. Somehow, I don't think that's designed to injure... OMG! Are you some kind of softy socialist!?!?!?!?!?!? I'm SICK to death of people saying 'war shouldn't be fought this way', 'war shouldn't be fought that way'. It's just out and out retarded! If you tie your hands by saying "We're not going to use powerful weapons on tanks, because if we hit it with this weapon, it will explode, killing everyone inside and because we're at war, we can't kill people, because that's not right." ? Is it just me or is that a complete contradiction?! "War is not nice." Maybe that's why we don't fight all the time?? War is using force to support political ambitions. When you go to war, you set your Generals their objectives. "Re-take the Falklands.", "Take Berlin." and then let them get on with it. You don't castrate them by saying "You can't use ground troops." or "You can go to war with this country, but you can't sink any of their ships." All it seeks to do, is make people believe that you're not prepared to go all the way and, as was demonstrated in both the Falkland conflict and Kosovo, you end up doing the opposite anyway, because when the crunch comes, you cannot achieve your objectives without it. Falklands: Thatcher imposed an "Exclusion Zone" around the Falklands, no action would be taken against Argentinian shipping unless they were in the area. What a silly cow she was for that. What happened? The Belgrano was sunk, outside the zone, while moving away from it. Militarily, it's great - crush your enemies, but politically, it was a disaster. Thatcher was confrunted on live, national television by a member of the public. It goes down as one of the greatest TV moments in history. Thatcher has never lived it down. No Primeminister has given a live, question and answer with the general public since. The Falklands: I believe that there should have been total war against Argentina. All Argentinian shipping and assest should have been declared fair game. Maybe less British servicemen would have lost their lives - the Argies would have more likely negotiated a settlement sooner. Kosovo: "We will not send ground troops into Kosovo." Result? An in-effectual bombing campaign, because the Serbian army could hide from air attack without having to worry about being caught on the hop by a sudden ground invasion. Fiasco, with public argument over "who's going in first". A mockery of the professionals (soldiers) who were doing the dirty work. The concepts of "Total War" and "Combined Arms" do not seem to be compatible with politics. (Edited by ScreamingWithNoSound at 10:35 pm on Dec. 4, 2001)
