How can I heal myself at an ambulance?
ScreamingWithNoSound replied to Phileosophos's topic in GENERAL
<FACETIOUS> LOL... you ARE injured, aren't you? </FACETIOUS> -
Are you having other problems with your system? It looks to me like you may have an underlying h/w or config fault... If you are having other problems, post detailed information on EVERYTHING you're using on you computer...

With a system of that age, I would suggest buying a new one, rather than upgrading - keep the second one to mess about with, or sell it on as a word processor. Personnally, I would recommend Abit and Asus as the board manufacturers to go for - they have the best reputation for performance and reliablity. A large chassis, with a _quality_ 300W, or more PSU (this is vital) Abit KR7A or Asus A7V266-E are both based on Via KT266A. Athlon XP 1600+ (atleast) + BIG heatsink 512mb _UNBUFFERED_ PC2100 DDR RAM (Cas 2 if you can get it, cas 2.5 otherwise) A GeForce 3 or Radeon 8500 - jury is still out on which is the best... SB Live! Audigy is said to be the best, but is know to have some compatability issues. A 7200rpm HDD (or 4 if you want to go all the way with a RAID setup) DVD drive - avoid DVD/CD-RW combo drives like the plague (I work on a support line and I am yet to encounter one that is reliable) Everything else is generally un-important, except for 1 thing - with PCs, you get what you pay for - if someone offers you a modem for Ă…15 and a different one for Ă…50... there WILL BE a reason... whether it is worth it, is up to you. If you have a top notch video card, you may want to invest in a quality monitor as well.

Ok...OPF won!......Im gonna get a new Video card
ScreamingWithNoSound replied to jedisalf's topic in GENERAL
Oh for *God's* sake... If you're going to buy a new computer, based around a fast CPU, there is NO point buying a budget card! Buy the fastest you can afford, whether it's Radeon 8500, or GeForce 3 Ti500 makes less difference than if it's Top of the Range or budget. If you have a CPU over 1gig, improving you graphics card will give a bigger performance increase than improving your CPU. -
So you think it's coming out in December then? LMAO!
-
Creating a server takes aaaaages, just be patient. If you're using a firewall, don't. Beyond that, you'll need to supply more detailed information.

If this doesn\'t just ruin your day...
ScreamingWithNoSound replied to KillorLive's topic in TROUBLESHOOTING
LMAO! KillorLive, you're full of sh*t! I work on a PC support line. I get "my computer isn't working" all day long. Fact: GeForce 2 and GeForce 3 use the same drivers. Fact: I don't have a problem similar to yours. Fact: Someone else on this forum has a GeForce 3 that works in OFP, but doesn't work in any OTHER game! Fact: There is no such thing as a 1.7Ghz Tbird. Now, if you'd like to stop being such a consumer and start acting like someone who actually wants to find out how to fix their problem, please: Reset your BIOS defaults Set PnP Aware OS in your BIOS to YES Re-install Windows XP Do NOT install anything else, even your printer. Install + update OFP. If you're in Europe, do v1.2, then 1.3, if the US, do 1.3 only. Test it, if it don't work, try these and in this order: Install the latest Via 4in1 driver (4.35something) Install the latest version of your RAID drivers (if using it) Install the latest version of the Nvidia Reference Drivers(from the NVIDIA website). DO NOT install the latest SB Live! drivers. Install Modem/Cable modem drivers. Do not mess about with any of the 'advanced' settings for anything. Try the game, if you still have problems, supply: The correct model / speed of your CPU. The BIOS version of your MOBO The full specification of you RAM Your sound card model Modem model (and drivers used if not std windows) NIC model (and drivers if not std windows) ALL other misc components and drivers used. The order you have your PCI cards in their slots (if you think that this isn't important, then you obviously ARE a consumer) The spec / setup of your HDD/DVD/CDRW etc - are you using a RAID setup? A clear, concise description of the problem. It is obvious from your last post, that you did not provide this the first time round. The problem has changed from "I just get blank screen with white text" to "I get it when I change screen res" Then, maybe, you would get more 'helpful' suggestions or a possible sollution. <RANT> There is NOTHING, I repeat N O T H I N G that irks me more, than someone who comes on saying "it's not working" and then CRITISISES people for providing suggestions, when it is THEY who are the numpty, because THEY did not provide ALL the information that someone who is trying to help, trying to give them a sollution _*IN THEIR OWN TIME*_, would need to actually give a sollution! </RANT> Oh yeah, if it only happens when you change screen res in game, but otherwise the game works fine, don't change screen res in game! I don't know what you're getting at... The armour on the APCs works perfectly, I mean, they stop anything upto and including a large calibre machinegun round. They even take a few hit's from 25/30mm cannon. Granted, I do agree that the damage for vehicles is too simplistic... certainly, it doesn't take 3 laws to kill a tank... it only takes 2 1. Disable one of the tracks. (Not difficult) 2. Land a hit where the turret meets the hull... disabling the turret, rendering the vehicle totally harmless. On the other hand... how insane would it be, if every time you hit a BMP the troops inside managed to get out? It would remove the need to balance speed vs carrying all your eggs in one basket. OK, OK, I know that's not what you're suggesting, but you must agree I have a point.

Hiya, Did you put down all the triggers _exactly_ how it said in the tutorial? If so, you also need to destroy the US truck to complete the mission. (three hand grenades/two GL grenades should do it) Also, if you're having Trouble with Triggers (ooohh, alliteration!), go with the simple one - change the sniper for a LAW soldier and blow up the UAZ... that's how I checked I'd got the idea right... How about... creating the mission again from scratch... going through the tutorial extra carefully, then saving it as something else. If you get it to work second time, go back and forth between the two and find out what you missed. (Edited by ScreamingWithNoSound at 9:26 pm on Nov. 25, 2001)

Does anyone else have the Geforce 3 Ti 500?
ScreamingWithNoSound replied to BlastinFooz619's topic in TROUBLESHOOTING
This is a problem with your monitor. You need to do several things... First: Check the specification of your monitor. If you have a 17", your maximum resolution will be 1600x1200 (quality monitor) 1280*1024 (cheap monitor). If you set the display resolution (screen area) above the specification of your monitor, you will get "Signal out of Range", "Signal Not Valid" or a blank screen with a flashing light... As well as checking maximum resolution, you need to check the maximum refresh rate @ resolution, EG, I have a 17" monitor which is capable of 1600*1200@60hz and 1024*768@100hz (it can do others, but I'm just trying to illustrate a point). I do not normally recommend setting refresh above 85hz and never at maximum refresh/resolution - if you run your monitor at full stretch all the time, it won't last as long (well, that's the logic anyway). I find that 1024x768x32@85hz is the most comfortable for me. At 75hz, the sreen flickers for me too much. There are several ways of adjusting these settings. The most simple, is: Start->Settings->Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced Then, for Win 98/Me Adaptor For 2K (XP?) Monitor Here, you should have a drop down box that allows you to change the refresh rate, if you have a PnP monitor, it should automatically hide settings that won't work. If in doubt, ALWAYS use the APPLY button, as this will give you the easiest opportunity to undo what you've done... If this doesn't correct your problems, the next step is DXDiag. Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information Goto the 'Tools' menu and look for 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool'. Click on the 'More Help' tab. Here, you will see a button called 'Override'. This let's you set the default refresh rate for _directX_ applications _not_ openGL. Put a number in here that you know works for you - if in doubt, use 60hz. If you've got a high-powered system, then I would certainly recommend getting a high-powered monitor - one that (like mine) is capable of atleast 1024x768@100hz. -
*Sigh* Boonie, yes, someone DID say Durons were crap, in fact, it was MrManiac who said they were. I did not write the post AT anybody, I merely used my experience of PCs and what I've read in THG and others to clear up some misconceptions that had been put forward on the thread. I do NOT appreaciate people (YOU) taking something that I had made as a GENERAL COMMENT to a whole forum and turning it against me in a personal way. I do not give a flying f*** what YOU did or did not say. If I was, I would have emailed you directly. Did you receive and email from me directly? <pause for silence> But since you raised a point about the P3, I will return: I do not consider the P3 to be crap. I consider them to be inferior to the Athlon in many ways, but they are not 'crap'. If you want 'crap', you want Cyrix MII. Clearly, the P3 is far supperior to this processor. Indeed, the P3 has many features which are superior to those included in the Athlon, least of which is it's in-built thermal protection. If you do not know what I mean, please read the review of the Athlon, P3 and P4 thermal protection on www.tomshardware.com. In the same way, the P3 does have many shortcomings when compared to the Athlon. The Athlon was designed from the ground-up, wheras, the P3 is largely based on the same design as the original Pentium, a technology that is now 7 years old. The main factor with the P3, is it's price. The P3 is a perfectly good processor - I work in PC support for a company that mainly sells Celeron/P3 systems. Athlons account for a far greater proportion of CPU replacements, despite very few of these being sold, relative to Celeron/P3. They are, however, overpriced. Price/performance, they simply cannot and never have, competed with Athlons. This is why I have not bought an Intel processor since 1996 and have no intention of doing so in the future, unless I have to build a mission-critical system, in which case, I may consider a P4 for obvious reasons. (If it's not that obvious to you, read the review on THG that I pointed you to earlier.) Just in case you missed it the first time: I do not like people making something I say personal, unless _I_ make it personal first. Thank you.

Maybe I'm just harsh, but I feel it was right for Jester OC to get flamed for being imbecilic! To have a problem and DEMAND a responce from the developers, especially when it concerns the in-built COPY PROTECTION SYSTEM, when trying to use the SAME CD ON TWO COMPUTERS!!! Obviously, as there is no mention of this in the FAQ section of this forum, one must assume that BIS believe that their consumers have at least some intelligence. Which is an attitude that I applaud!

If you create a directory called "scripts" in your OFP directory, you can put all your custom, commonly used scripts into it and then just use the name of the script when you call it. I found this out by accident (typically), but it is soooo cool! OFP will automatically compile the script into the completed mission file when you export it, so you'll never have to mess about moving scripts into your missiong directory ever again!
-
Have you looked at the FAQ? Have you set a permenant swap file... with Win9x, I found this to be the biggest problem. Use atleast 256MB. 512 or even 768 if you've got a big drive.
-
You could create civilians, then use "this setDamage 1" in the INIT box, they'd then die as soon as they joined the game and become seaguls! Of course, this only works if the game has two sides...
-
Interesting point. But don't most games where you get to play the other side have 15-20 missions per side... instead of the... erm... 40, is it? (I can't be bothered to count, but I think it is) missions you get in OFP? Don't these other games then release more missions and units, that you can only get by buying the update... for... Hmm... half the cost of the original game? In the UK, OFP hit the shops at Ă…39.99. Red hammer is going to be Ă…9.99! Ă…49.98 for the best grunt sim ever + the add-on? *shrug* Maybe I've got too much money.

Just to re-iterate. The problem that MrManiac is experiencing, is NOT, N O T, repeat _IN NO WAY_ a GENERAL performance problem. His GENERAL performance is FINE. His problem, is very specific and is one that I have encountered. One good example: You are sniping. You find yourself a nice, cosy bush, go prone, then switch to your scope... if you happen to catch the bush in your sight, or turn so you are facing the bush, the frame rate with drop DRAMATICALLY, for me and, from what I've read, for MrManiac, it almost becomes Jerk-o-vision. This is a very specific problem. It is extremely interesting, as, in 3D games, say for example Quake, if you are staring at a simple surface, such as a wall, your frame rate will shoot right UP, it's only when you look at a wide open space, with lots of objects, that the game will slow down. This is the EXACT opposite of what we seem to be experiencing, looking at open spaces is fine, it's when you're looking at a single object it goes to s***. Reflecting on this, it may well be a disign feature *sigh*, as understandably, the game would have been optimised for open spaces, rather than confined ones.

JPSgerman. I'm sorry but what you have written about refresh rates and windows 2000 is not correct. The 'Optimal' setting that you refer to, will push the monitor refresh rate to the maximum, for the screen area. To set your monitor refresh rate to 100hz is suicidal for 2 reasons: Most OEM 17" and almost all 15"/14" are not capable of displaying 1024x768 at 100hz, if you try to force the monitor to this refresh rate, you may damage your monitor, but more than likely, you'll just get a blank screen. (Incidentaly, to fix this, go into safe mode, reset the refresh rate, then restart, or just remove your display driver from device manager) Besides, this only effect the _monitor_ NOT the graphics card. This is a control of how many times per second a new video signal is sent, not how fast it refreshes the frame buffer. As to whether refresh rate of the monitor is linked to the refresh rate when VSYNC is enabled, in this case, is irrelevant, as Mr Maniac has already stated that he has disabled VSYNC in the display drivers. As for Win 2K / XP and DirectX. I cannot agree with what you say. 2K does run on the NT-style kernel, but it has been re-written. Win2K/XP actually use DirectX for ALL the video functions! While I must agree, I have encountered some problems with Win2K/DirectX and certain games, the vast majority were solved by the v11.xx nVidia drivers. Point being, that it is generally drivers that are the issue with 2K/XP. OK, there are many games that have problems with 2K/XP, but atleast with these, you don't need to restart your computer every time one crashes out...

Lol I think the point about ammo wastage, is more to do with rookies burning all their ammo cause they were sh*tting lumps when the VC came-a-calling... then getting killed cause the VC could just run up to them and they couldn't fight back... How true that is, I don't know, but lets face it... The French, British, Germans, Austrians, Australians all give their troops weapons that can fire full auto. All these nations are noted for the training of their troops... The US is not. Co-inky-dink?

On re-reading your original post, I can see that nobody has got the point of what you’re saying. I have exactly the same problem… it’s not _general_ performance, only when you’re looking at something real close… like a tree through a sniper scope? I just live with it. I would imagine that it’s something to do with the way that the engine is optimised – it’s designed for wide open spaces, not for close quarters. I have an Athlon 900(100 fsb), 512mb pc133, GeForce2 MX(OEM). I use the following settings: Under additional properties for the graphics card – (That’s: Start->Settings->Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->GeForce xxxxxxx Properties->Additional properties) 3d Antialiasing Settings Manually select the antialiasing mode Off Direct3D Settings Enable Fog Table Emulation = Ticked Display Logo when running D3D apps = unticked MipMap detail level = Blend (Minimum you can run OFP with) Use Upto _128_ MB of system memory for textures in PCI mode. More Direct3D… Vertical Sync = Disabled (this requires non-WHQL drivers and a registry hack) Render no more than = _3_ frames ahead. Everything else is irrelevant to performance in OFP. In OFP preferences: Display Device = Direct3D HW T&L (This is CRITICAL if you have a GeForce card, it improves performance MASSIVELY, even if it is a bit buggy in 16 bit mode) Resolution = 1024x768x16 Advanced Performance Total Memory = 256MB Texture Heap = 16MB File Heap = 16MB Geometry Performance = 1783 Effect Object Shadows = Unchecked Vehicle Shadows = Unchecked Explosions/Smoke = Checked (this is a must, as grenades and smoke grenades don’t work (for you) if you have them disabled. Additional Lights = Explosions, Missiles and static all ticked. Textures Cockpits = 64 Objects = 64 Landscape = 64 Special Effects = 32 Auto drop-down = 4x Details Max Objects = 256 Objects LOD = 0.032 Shadows LOD = 0.050 (irrelevant, as shadows are disabled) In Game: Visual Quality, Frame Rate = Maximum possible. One thing – have you checked your BIOS settings? Toms Hardware Guide (www.tomshardware.com) did a BIOS tweaking article not too long ago, think it’s in the motherboards section. Some points about what has been said on the thread. *Athlon vs Duron.* The Duron, is almost IDENTICAL to the Athlon, except in the amount of level 2 cache. The Athlon has 256KB, the Duron has just 64KB. The similarity is demonstrated very well by benchmarks involving certain wire-frame rendering software – where the Athlon and Duron perform EXACTLY the same (this is not bull-s**t, I couldn’t believe it myself). Where the Duron falls down compared to Athlon, is when it comes to handling large amounts of contiguous data… like bitmap images like… oooh, textures! That’s why the Athlons out-perform in games, but the difference isn’t massive. In short, the only reason your Duron can’t cut the mustard, is because it runs at 900/1gig, not because it’s a Duron. *Drivers* Drivers can be important. However, if you have the latest Via 4in1 and Detonator, that should be all you need. *Cel-it-on vs P 3* The Celeron and P3 are very different, unlike Athlon/Duron. The celeron was, until recently, based on the P2. When it was taken up to 100mhz FSB, the core was changed to a cut down P3, the main difference being the reduced L2 cache – 256KB on P3, 128KB on Celeron oh yeah, and the Celeron only works at 100mhz fsb, compared to the 133mhz of the P3. Whoever said that Celerons were P3s that failed QC is talking through his arse (sorry). That was something that happened to the very early 486sx/dx. The Celeron was ALWAYS _designed_ to be the way it is. They designed it to be cheap deliberately, not by accident. Have fun Eddy

Many of you have horrible ideas
ScreamingWithNoSound replied to Soon2B 2nd LT's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Here, here! Loose this fixation with 1985. Loose the fixation with US vs USSR. Make the requests, because there WILL BE a Flashpoint 2. Maybe there'll be a Flashpoint 2: Europe and a Flashpoint 2: USA - same missions, just different looking guns and uniforms, because, ultimately, that's all we're talking about. Whats the difference, between the Steyr Aug, FAMas and SA80? Looks, reliability. All capable of firing full auto. Maybe the FAMas doesn't come with a scope, but the Steyr and (most) SA80s come with one. So what's the fuss? The fuss is, there's a difference between a Red Devil with an M16 or Steyr and one with an SA80. What? It _feels_ right. ####, come to think of it, I'd LOVE to play a campaign based around a different nation! Even Germany (5-1, 5-1, 5-1, 5-1...) Sorry, just couldn't resist that. Why? Because it's different. Oh yeah... there's gonna be Red Hammer, isn't there? And you get to go around slaughtering Yanks... I can't wait! -
Fair point, but because helis generally use jet turbine engines, the difference, over all isn't THAT much less noisy... especially as 100db is 10x 90db, it doesn't matter if you knock 60% off, it's still going to be VERY loud. Unless someone's been doing lazy arithmetic
-
LOL a quite helicopter... NOW I've heard EVERYTHING!!! ROTFLMGDFAO!
-
More importantly, XP 64 bit is a _different_ version of XP, for 64-bit CPUs, like AMDs new Sledgehammer...
-
Definitely! That's the one thing that's really missing from the game... Taking out the tracks is how infantry kill a tank. Think it's fundemental to the engine, so we'll probably have to wait for OFP2... oh well, something to look forward to I suppose!
