Mission Performance Advice
Richmuel UK posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Hi, forgive me if this is a strange question, but I'm relatively new to mission making but have pretty much learnt how to do most things. However lacking experience of seeing my missions running, I am just curious to know what kind of effect scripts, modules, triggers ect and AI amounts will have on performance online and am really just after any advice on what things I should try to keep to a minimum and a suggestion on how how to keep my mission 'performance efficient.' For instance, are lots of wapoints going to be a big drain? And how how many ai/groups should I be aiming for? What is considered a normal amount of scripts? Any and all advice would be much appreciated on this matter as I could not find any discussion elsewhere, so not so much 'how' to do things, but 'what effect' will these things have. Thanks :-) -
Making a local script activate globally.

I'm having endless trouble at the moment getting my mission functional for MP. It works fine in SP which I now know is because you are the 'player'. But online every person is a different variable. My script still functions in multiplayer but every single team member has to activate it themselves individually. I need it to be once for all. I'll explain what I'm trying to achieve: In my mission you have to search through some bags and a briefcase to find a 'file.' Upon finding the file I create new objectives and markers. I do this using a addAction command and create marker script. It functions in the multiplayer . In the init line of the object i have: this activates intel1.sqs Which activates marker.sqs intel1=true fires off a trigger which completes the objective. Basically that allows the player to search a breifcase and 'find' the files creating new objectives and markers to act upon it. But as I said this is a local event. How do I make this activate for everyone? Do I have to use publicvariables? I don't have a clue how to use these, where to put them and how to make them activate all this. The marker script is the only script which activates for everyone. Also my breifing is only appearing for the first person to enter named player. Everyone else does not get the origional briefing. Some one showed me to a script which makes a hint show as a global hint but I couldn't work out how to use it to fire scripts and objectives off. This was my first attempt at a map so I may be missing something obvious but no matter how hard i search i could not find exactly what i'm looking for or if i did it went over my head. If someone could kindly take the time and walk me through would be much appreciated. Or perhaps i'm doing this the wrong way. Thanks. -

Ah! I can't thankyou enough everyone. Finally got it working I think. Basically what all you wrote was correct however I was getting confused about where to put the different scripts and what script was what and how they related to the addaction and each other. Putting up with my lack of knowledge was very much appreciated. I understand the basic scripting it was just transfering it over into multiplayer but now I've got this underwraps I should be away. Once again, thankyou so much :D Edit: Unbelievably I worked out why when I tried methods posted at first it didn't work. I was wanting a marker to setdirection at 45 degrees. I now realise i forgot to add a ; afterwards which killed the rest of the script. Typical :D -

Thanks for your help but I think this is beyond me unless I can see a working example mission. Will see if I can acheive my aim some simpler way :/ At the moment it gets as far as creating the first marker minus the text, nothing else fires off. When testing it does it need to be on a dedicated server or will it work in the editor or on a hosted game? I've now got myself royally confused from what I do with addaction right the way through. :( For now I'll just forget about the searching bags things, put in some simple triggers and hope for the best. Hopefully someone will come up with a similar mission which I can learn from later. Thanks for putting up with me this far though :) -

Still can't get it to work :( *pulls hair out* Wish there was a simple *Execute Globally* command :D If anyone finds a way to get this working you will have my eternal greatfulness :D My problem is I don't understand what I'm doing with publicvariables ect. Hardest part is having to be on a multiplayer server to test it. Using my origional script everyone sees the markers its just not the new objectives or messages. I could really use an example mission that uses these scripts. Using the above I can't even get the action to dissapear let alone the rest of it to work. -

Oo thankyou. That sounds like it. Where abouts would I add it in the addaction script: In the brackets or before or after? -

Is that not effectively what I have already done in the intel1 script? I think what I need is for someone to explain publicvariables or whatever and how to execute local scripts globally. -

@Carpaazi, I placed a man where I wanted the marker then used 'camera.sqs' to lock onto his position, pressed left mouse button then alt+tabbed into notepad and pressed paste. You then find the co-ordinates there. @Kylania: Do you mean have the objectives and map markers hidden and just reveal them once say a player activates the bag by meeting a condition? Any idea how I'd do this? How do I get all clients to execute something? This is the bit I'm struggling with. Telling something to be executed by ALL clients rather than by just the one who pressed it Or still if anyone else knows a way to solve it. -
The isServer command.
Richmuel UK replied to tophe's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
How would I use a publicvariable to pass something like a local hint to all players. In my mission players search a bag using add action which then makes a new objective with markers and a hint via a script. However it only works for players who search it. Anyone know how I make it one for all? I think it's related!! -

Interviews with the managing directors of each army are now up on the main site for those interested in finding out who is in charge of each army. Shashka International being based in the eastern block is very difficult to get a hold of. However the ANN spent many resources hunting down its newly appointed Operations Director of Chernarus, Mr. Cross. You can read the very rare interview with the man at: http://cfarma2.com/?p=188 River Stone Inc is an American based company who recently acquired an airbase in Chernarus and are tasked with bringing an end to the corrupt SI. Mr.Wander was recently appointed the new Managing Director and gave an interview to the press before he set off with a small task force on his mission. Last night the decision was made to end IC-Arma. Its been a great few years and many of the players are very grateful for all the admins have done. It was an excellent experience. We will now solely be focusing on www.cfarma2.com

Which do you play more? Huge PVP MP battles or small coop missions?
Richmuel UK replied to BF2_Trooper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
Definately IC-Arma and Charlie Foxtrot for huge PVP battles. Nothing can compare even closely. Also they don't require a deadly serious amount of dedication. Its simple enough in that you have to turn up once a week for the main battle (the event itself), be able to communicate and follow orders. Which to be honest is asking very little. Beyond that you can get promotions and form part of fully organised armies. I think the fact that the server being full most nights to 66 players i testament to the fact the game mode we have developed over 2 years is very popular. Its unfortunately a touch confusing to the new people but once they got on TS and start to understand how to fit in it can get very exciting. Emphasis to enjoy this though requires teamspeak use. I know the last few nights even the public non-dedicated people joining in have had a blast and with so many veterans on its been a great experience. The tournament creates players who have a great depth of knowledge in all aspects of flying and tanking and there are some very skilled people. People learn all sorts just by jumping into the makeshift squads. The fact is its different everytime and the human factor makes it unparralelled. Of course I say the server currently holds 66 players for public events only, but we believe we have the potential to double that on 'battle nights' once we finish testing and sorting out a few problems here and there. -
Manhatten question (Spoilers)

Can you do anything to save them? I found the girl and she said to go see the doctor but I could never find him. If you do can you save him? -
The new left-hand team menu - what does it do exactly?
Richmuel UK replied to Helmut_AUT's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
What is speech control? Have a missed a new feature where I can control my team by voice? Or do you mean the complex number menu? -
I use a 360 controller and have the left stick set to accelerate and then the triggers either side to change the rudder left or right. Pretty much all i need to taxi just got to go easy.

I did the same and I've come to the conclusion there is a cheap trigger field of death which is pretty lame. I might be mistaken but I had tons of NAPA following me for some reason i could tell my squad to disembark and go forward, but the second i got out the car i was suddenly under fire from tons of sniper shots. Everytime I progressed forward the car got rocketed or i got sniped to pieces and strangely enough the shots only ever seemed to choose me as their target and my squad was never fired on unless i got out. I got past it by restarting and just getting in the chopper.

I ran into the girl from the first mission on this one and she says I should go talk to the doctor who is also in town. But I can't for the life of me find him? Anyone know where he is?

ArmaHolic ArmA 2 Optimization

Well with Arma 1 they did eventually release a patch that gave a 100% improvement in performance. Although you'd think they would have learnt from that!! -

You find that out once you do the smugglers 'quest' :D Thanks for that, a real big help. I normally wouldn't ask but with the reported potential bugs in this mission and people saying they are all in the red area it got to the point where enough was enough ^.^ So thanks for confirming my suspicions that there are some actually outside the zone. -

Ho hum. Any chance you could post a picture of your map once you've cleared the camps? Because I have been round that red circle 5000 times now and can't seem to get more than 1 per zone to activate. There are 2 other sets of tents i find with men around them i always find in the circle but no matter how many times i clear it on a restart it nevers triggers as a camp. Did you find any out of the circle?
