Latest ArmA2 & ArmA2:OA Press Coverage | NO discussion here!
odjob replied to EricM's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Could we get this thread back on topic please. Having to look thru several pages of ranting wether the correct type of machinegun is mounted on a specific tank etc to find news about Arma2 is getting frustrating  -
It seems as the "Name Game" pr-trick by Codies has got alot of people confused. I have read many comments on Ofp2 videos where people belive its the "true" followup on Ofp1, even after others have explained they still belive Ofp2 is the "real" deal because it carries the name Ofp.

31st NORMANDY MOD - WW2 Â -BETA RELEASE
odjob replied to rip31st's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Arma has an intersting sound system.  It works off of decibal rating.  Things that are loud in real life that can be heard over distance in ArmA get a higher decibal rating.  Obviously you and everyone else have noticed the .30 cal on the sherman is extremely loud very far away.  This will be corrected.  When it was programmed initially, I admit I was overly excited to hear the weapon and thought it should be louder...Like a lot of other mod makers, we've all made this mistake.  I can think of another VERY popular mod right now that is getting a lot of attention that has retarded tank sounds that can be heard very far away.  Once the sherman is fixed before the next update, you won't hear it firing 20 miles away. Yeah i was playing with my earphones on quite high volume the first time i heard them, from about 10m it almost blew my eardrums out lol  Glad to hear its being looked into. Also the new pics look wonderful, cant wait  -

Dont know if it has been brought up before but the mg on shermans are way to loud, even at long distance. Im not sure if its the coax or commander mg. -
Just want to say thank you for a wonderful map v1.1 is a great improvement especialy the groundclutter, the long grass on 1.0 made it almost impossible to see in some parts. A couple of suggestions: 1. Although the long grass (in 1.0) is obstruptive it felt like Reed grass found on beaches, you could place some (just a little) just above the beach where sand meets grass. 2. Is there some way you can make the bunkers visible on the map? would make it much easier to place gunners in them in the editor. Again, wonderful job on this map

Thank you very much for that answer. Something that really bothered me in Arma1 was that you couldent hide vehicles in forrests (from helicopters), they were easy to spot. In reality forrests are a natural and sometimes the only place to hide from arial threats. I hope that in Arma2 the forrests are (almost) impossible to see through from the air and from a distance at ground (both for humans and for ai), they should be very dark. Â to Bi for all their hard work.

Great vid! Really looking forward to Arma2 now. Couple of things i noticed: 1. At 00:49 the "Rescue" text on the hk is reversed 2. From above the forrestground is to bright, it will be easy to see people/vehicles hiding in forrests from helicopters. Maybe this is because shadows doesnt render at this distance. Any workaround to make forrests darker?

I agree. The sound oclusion "feature" is a nice concept but not very well implemented. For example a helicopter is very loud but a small bush or a lamp-pole make it sound like its behind a hill. In my opinion it (sound oclusion) should have been limited to terrain only.

Armed Assault & HD 4870 problem with glare effects
odjob replied to evatanen's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Try changing your hdrprecision setting to 16 or 32. By default it's on 8. You will find the setting in your arma.cfg, default location: My Documents\ArmA\ArmA.cfg (Edit while game closed) Ya i tried 16 and it made it a bit better, will try 32 and see if that solves it. Thanks for the heads up. -
Thought we should have a thread about these new cards  I got a Saphire 4870 and using the 8.6 drivers. Havent tinkered to much with Arma yet but its an improvement over my "old" 8800gts 640mb. Running 1680x1050 with all on high exept aa on low gives me ~35fps in a heavy DAC battle. Anyone tried the beta driver from ati? E6600 @3.0 2 GB P5B Dlx wifi/ap Saphire 4870 X-fi Vista32

Armed Assault & HD 4870 problem with glare effects
odjob replied to evatanen's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Im also running 1680x1050 and i cant really decide (AA)normal or off. What really bugs me is when playing in bad (rainy daytime) weather and going into a forrest everything goes really bright. Looking down on the hands they are white as snow   but looking up makes it normal  . -

8.7 on HD4870 gives me no problems either. -
Do you have "Game Mode" enabled in Audio Console? On my card (X-fi extreme music) i had issues running Arma in "Entertainment Mode" that disapeared when using "Game Mode".

Overloaded with mod choices need advice please.
odjob replied to Flanker15's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
A bit of advise, create modfolders (search for it here on the forums). Preferably more than one, i have a "test" folder that i put the latest downloaded addons in. By doing so its much easier to find what addons that are giving you trouble, it happens from time to time -
A note about v-sync, if you have set 60hz, your graphicscard tries to keep a 60hz update freq to your monitor. if you turn v-sync off you might notice "tearing" if your fps drops below 60fps, thats because your hardware cant keep up and therefore dropping frames in the atempt to keep the 60hz uppdate freq. With v-sync on this never happens because it will never drop frames but instead the game will run slower. Its debateable witch is better, i think its better to have v-sync on if your hardware can keep up as it gives a nicer image (my opinion). But if it gets really sluggish turn it off as the game wont slow down as much.

Since you are now running with higher settings more data needs to be in the graphics memory, i belive that the micro stutters appear when new textures etc is loaded into the graphics memory. I see this also with my 4870, if i for example from the editor place a unit in paraiso and run around it stutters a little bit at first, but becomes better after awhile when most textures has been loaded.

Yup, im also getting better performance with 8.6 hotfix drivers. Anyone else on Vista(32) tried to switch off indexing (Windows search)? Since i did not only Arma but my hole system overall feels more responsive.
