I was thinking about this for a while now, mainly when I drive down my road, hop on the freeway, pass by suburbs and cities... I just realized that I have yet to come across a traditional 4,6, or 8 lane street, highway, or even freeway in Sahrani. Every city in Sahrani has the same buildings on the same corners, with little variation for complexes, hangers, churches, schools. All of the terrain seems to be the same as well. I remember taking a trip up to Colorado and driving along the mountainside. Sahrani has moutains... but no roads that go up them. Not only that, but if they did have roads going up the side of mountains, they probably wouldn't even be level, but rather even with the terrain showing a lack of detail. Yes, ArmA does look amazing, graphics wise. There is tremendous detail built into the objects... but what about the layout of Sahrani itself. I just don't see much for detail on this island.
-
All I know is, the majority of the island isn't a flat strip of prepared agricultural field. I thought Resistance's "high" setting nicely simulated the many dells and dips that appear in rural terrain. Seeing as I'm clearly on my own on this one, I won't speak of it again. I would have agreed with you if the bumps werent so deep and much more scarce. (not every 5 meters) Same idea I had as well. It seems like wherever there is a hill or a bump, it's always an extremely prominent and steep one. There aren't any gradual rises and falls in hills. And when there are... it leads up to a large hill or a mountain. Sure there are some crops and farmlands, but even those are surrounded by trees and steep hills. I think that they may have overdone the topography part of the island.

Putting Colorado in perspective, Sahrani is smaller than Denver. What the Developers were thinking was how to make such a massive scale game in a way that is economical in terms of system performance and man hours. There is no way you could model Los Angeles in rich, glorious detail with streaming terrain and expect to create a product that will run on current technology and be finished with a reasonably sized team. That said, I'm sure that most of our computers aren't up to the task of handling everything that this game currently has to offer. The countryside looks ridiculously awesome, but I've never seen it with more than 4000m view distance and most settings on low. I can't wait to play this thing on future technology so I can experience the full she-bang. Understood, but what I am getting at is that the object placement and lack of objects seems odd. I guess that's what you can expect from a 40 dollar game though huh? I just found it odd that after every hill you climb, there is another one very similar to it on the other side with the same amount of trees etc. There are some forests, but they really don't seem to be "big" at all. And the only flat terrain that I can see is in the desert. Why wouldn't grass land be flat sometimes as well? I think it would be nice to see a variation of buildings from city to city, and maybe some four lane highways?

Nice to know Frederf is helping the community in so many ways... It's not acceptable to take your frustration from your bad day out on others... They don't deserve it and you should know better. You're the one who was "owned".

Not to be obnoxious or sarcastic, but I'm the only one who picked the UAZ and other transport vehicles?? I think these are the most feared especially the UAZ because they get in and get out the quickest out of any vehicle. Not only that, but they are hard to take down since they are a small object that moves quickly. Usually when a UAZ infiltrates a base, the driver and passengers will live if the driver takes proper courses. This is very risky because that UAZ just let 1-3 enemies into your base as your team lets it go unnoticed.

TheReddog, That's the same with me! Had ArmA working fine for 2 months and all of a sudden when I reformatted my new PC I started getting the memory error.
-
I changed the HDR Precision from 8 to 16 like some have said and I played for an hour and I was fine... I'm not saying this fixed it, I'm just saying it didn't happen for that full hour I booted up ArmA and played. I'll keep running it to see if it does happen again.
-
Same here. I reformatted my computer and now I get that error every 5 minutes and it shuts down ArmA. It never has happened before the reformat.

I think the game would be better if Fixed-wing aircraft were erased period. And dare I say this, but maybe even if we didn't have any Helicopters either?? Nah, we need to get places fast, after all it is a big map we are talking about. I just don't see how BIS can get away with this. The infantry are fine I guess, and the vehicles could be improved a little bit, but the flight model even on helicopters in this game is just disappointing, and almost ruins the fun of the game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but ArmA IS supposed to be a realism game and/or simulation, right?
-
What I have been saying for all this time and people keep shooting down my opinion. I don't see the point of having fixed-wing aircraft currently in ArmA, simply because the flight model is basically like BattleField 1942's WWII Flight Model. If we can't get it even in the vacinity of "useful" then what's the point of having them? It's not just the A-10, all flight models for fixed-wing aircraft is just terrible in ArmA, and I hope BIS will fix this soon. I'm not asking for a full-blown flight model like IL2 Forgotten Battles, Pacific Fighters, and Microsoft's Flight Simulator X, but lets at least get the basics down first.

When you don't mow the lawn so you can experience that cool "lying down grass" effect when prone.

Alright guys, I am having a different problem than most of you. Most of you are experiencing crashes to desktop, coding errors, well my game runs fine in that aspect, but not so well in another... The US ArmA Version 1.06 ran well on my system (specs shown below, using Windows XP). Ever since I have downloaded 1.08 I have had this texture bug... let me explain. A minute or two into a game (Offline or Online) my textures start to flicker between high and low detail settings. My Night Vision Goggles flicker black and green when using them. The devices such as the compass and GPS flickers when I bring up my MAP. Text becomes blurred after a while as if the resolution was set very low. I have read for many many minutes and even hours to try to find someone with a fix, but I haven't found one and am starting to get pissed off. I have heard of alt+tabbing which doesn't work. <L> <SHIFT> + <MINUS> "FLUSH" <ENTER> does not work. Reinstalling the game 6 times has not worked. Reinstalling the patch has not worked. I haven't tried reinstalling my video drivers, but I think that's the least of my worries since other games run PERFECT. My last resort is reinstalling Windows XP, which sounds icky, let alone actually performing that type of action just for this error. Not only do my textures flicker, but this drops my frame rate until the game is NOT PLAYABLE. If anyone would be able to help me out or us out, knowing there are more people with this issue, we would be greatly appreciative. Yes my drivers are fine, my Windows XP is valid, and I'm not running addons. I just want to play ArmA like everyone else! PS. I bought this rig no more than two weeks ago, it's BRAND new - I put it together myself. Every component is new.

I can't believe that no one here uses CH Sticks. What a bummer... you guys are really missing out.

Double post, sorry Here is the link to Newegg, in which you can get the CH Fighterstick for only $102 3 4-way hats and an 8-way hat, plus many other buttons. You won't be let down if you purchase this. And they last - Read some reviews on there and some people have had it for almost a decade. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826169102

In my opinion Force Feedback is just a gimmick like Playstation 2's Dual Shock or "Rumble" is to their controller. It doesn't enhance your ability to play, only the immersion factor. To be honest, I am one of those gamers who always turned the Rumble off because it was a distraction and it was also annoying. You pay a lot of extra money for the force feedback and in the end, you might not even care about it.

What you need is this: This is the CH Fighterstick by CH Products. A little pricey at $149.99, big, but has all of the features you need and MORE. The precision on this baby is amazing, and how do I know this? Because I own one. These joysticks never fail. If they do, its more likely a component inside the stick - No worries, CH has the solution. Not only do they make great joysticks that last forever, but they sell replacement parts for cheap so you can easily fix what has gone bad or been broken. They also have rudder pedals which you don't need, but I would recommend them for any other flight sim and also the immersion factor. I have had this joystick for 4 years now. It has been one of the best investments I've made in PC Gaming. It also comes with X and Y axis trim controls for your more advanced flying. Games I have played with this stick are: IL2 Sturmovik IL2 Forgotten Battles + Expansion Pacific Fighters Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 - A Century of Flight Microsoft Flight Simulator X Operation Flashpoint Armed Assault Not only have I been able to play these games with this joystick, but I have been able to play them WELL. It is understandable that it is a little on the spendy side, but they do offer a Combatstick 568, which has the same performance with fewer buttons for about 40 dollars less.

Not only do I support the continuation of this thread, but I also agree that eVolution has to go. I'm sure it took a lot of work and such, but all it is, is a bunch of small missions bunched into one big island of Sahrani. I'd like to play some more Close Quarters Battles maps like some others have agreed with. Why do we need excessive amounts of vehicles? The maps only encourage vehicle to vehicle combat with hundreds of choppers and tanks they have at the main base... Not only that but blowing up radio towers at every city gets very old, especially playing against the same AI. Where are all of the 8 vs 8 or 12 vs 12 CQB maps?

I found a temporary fix for this flickering issue. I am currently running an 8800GTS 640MB and by turning my texture detail on high keeps the flickering down. I noticed that the more textures that are displayed on my screen, the more flickering I encounter. For some reason turning the texture detail on high or very high will eliminate most of my flickering issues. But with this bug, night vision isn't the only thing that is affected. Your textures will flicker as well from high to low, also lowering your frames per second by A TON. Again, I just turned my texture detail from low or medium up to HIGH or VERY HIGH and the problem is temporarily fixed. Hopefully they fix this in the next patch, because not only is this bug a big issue, but I believe my frame rates should be much greater than they really are with 1.08.
-
Well then it seems to be different with everyone... weird. Found something else out about the bug. The more textures that are displayed on the screen, the more chances the bug will appear. I was running fine on the outskirts of a city in a 20 player server, but once I joined a 64 player server I noticed the bug more.
-
FOUND A TEMPORARY SOLUTION! Alright, after playing around with my video settings and such for an hour, I figured out my settings that work so there is no more flickering. Object and Terrain Detail don't matter as far as my PC goes. My Texture detail is set to Normal and Post Process Effects are set to LOW. Shading on High I don't believe Antistrophic or AA mattered with my situation much, but I have Antistrophic filtering on Low and AA disabled. Everything else is the default settings. Try these settings out if you are having problems and see if they work.

They did this with Delta Force: Land Warrior a while back. It kept track of all of your stats, not just on one server, but it was apart of Novalogic's Multiplayer. It was kind of interesting how it worked actually. It was fun to gain new promotions, gain certain awards for sniping, headshots, assists etc etc. But there got to be so many "stat padders" that you would start to care less and less as you went along with the game. Good idea, but it is kind of "arcadish" and probably doesn't belong in this type of game. Also, BIS would have a lot of work ahead of them let alone getting this game into tip top shape.
-
Understood, and I have tried that many times after reinstalling the game, and it did not seem to fix the bug. Again, 1.06 worked fine with any setting I wanted. But then 1.08 came along like one of those uncles you never really got along with... Oh well, all I can say is that I hope BIS fixes this soon, not only this bug, but the rest of them as well, because it is affecting many players with high end PC's.

Check page 2 of this thread. This has already been discussed. Also ... it may help to use this command in game, when things start getting "choppy" <L> <SHIFT> + <NUMPAD> <-> then type 'FLUSH' This clears vRam and may prevent a crash or clear particles/warping. If this fixes your problem, then it will be clear to you that it is your video card/driver and not your OS or another variable. This does NOT work. I am running the specs in my signature and doing this command does Activate "FLUSH". However, it doesn't fix the texture bug, it only resets the Video RAM or whatever it's doing. I have reinstalled ArmA 5 times now and downloaded 5 1.08 patches from different sites and I am STILL getting this texture bug which drops my Frames Per Second to a condition where it is UNPLAYABLE. I'm going to go to my last resort and reinstall Windows XP, because there is nothing else I can do. My graphics card and drivers work fine with any other game, in fact they work extremely well. The only problem I am having is with ArmA's 1.08 PATCH ONLY! No dont bother reinstalling windows that wont help, it's clearly a problem with the 1.08 patch, using the 1.07 patch doesn't have these texture issues. Thanks and I believe you are right. It seems like an isolated problem I guess (1.08). Oh well, I hope BIS gets this fixed soon, because they might risk losing players if it becomes a long duration.
-
I'm having the exact same problems. Textures seem to flicker rapidly or just disappear, this lowers frames per second to almost zero at times. Running 8800GTS 640MB Windows XP e6600 2.4Ghz C2D
