To the people who are playing ArmA, how is it?

Well, I just played the campaign some more and I can only say it is probably among the worst single player campaigns I have ever played, to a large portion thanks to the god awful AI and scripting that is simply hilarious. I played the side mission where you are supposed to take out an enemy officer who is in some heavily guarded hotel. Right so I approach without getting spotted and suddenly it says objective complete .. wtf? So the officer died .. and I didn't even get to see him. Then it gets even better .. as I am on my way to the extraction point, the enemy AI suddenly starts taking potshots at me from all angles. How the hell do they know where I am out of a sudden when before I passed guards without being noticed? Ok, scrap that I thought and went to the other side mission where you are to eliminate hostile presence in some town. Me and my team of 3 other AI approach the enemy and within 5 seconds my squadmates die. Right. Then I die for no apparent reason too. Obviously was spotted again when I should not have been. Scrap that too. So I ignore the side missions and go for the main one where you mount TOW Humvees with your squad. We approach the seek and destroy location and basically my squadmates aren't doing anything. I order them to fire on the BRDMs but nothing happens ... except both our Humvees being blown up that is. Yay! Fun fun. Now that leaves me with one serious question for BIS - did you EVER bother playtesting your campaign? As it stands right now, it is not playable with the scripting errors, AI flaws etc what not. If anything the singleplayer is one heck of a source for frustration and nothing but a waste of time.

    Wow.

Geez finally able to log in (forums have been giving me hell for weeks .. dumb Mozilla I guess) ... ANYHOW. I will agree with many of the points you made twisted, and I like ArmA a lot as well, but tbh with you the AI is one massive bummer to me. I don't mean the bugs/scripting stuff for that matter btw. I will give an example. This mission in the campaign where you are supposed to blow up a bridge (which doesn't work all too well on a sidenote) ... well so I blow my satchels while hiding behind this wall. No way for the AI to spot me all too easy. In fact before I blow the charges, they could care less about the position I am in, don't notice me .. but AS SOON as I set off the charges, they INSTANTLY turn around to my position and about 24729472947 guys open up on me. WTF? I am sorry but that kind of AI uberness is not acceptable by one bit in ANY game in 2006, let alone a game that is supposed to be realistic. It was like this in OFP already and I am afraid to say nothing has happened ever since to make the AI more believable. It totally kills the immersion and at least for the singleplayer, to me it's gamebreaking. About the rest .. yah I am having a lot of fun in mp despite a lot of issues (mentioned elsewhere on these boards) which I am sure will be ironed out sooner or later. I am not holding my breath about any sort of improvement on the AI though tbh .. cause I really hate to say this but it seems to me after OFP and now ArmA, BIS does not seem to be able to get it right. I might be eating my words and actually hope I will, but again, not holding my breath.

    Breath Holding?

When you get up too quickly and you feel dizzy, it has little to do with oxygen but your blood pressure and the dizzy feeling is a little hint at what a blackout would be.

    Vegetation concealment

It might have been a machine gunner since I am 100 % sure that mission was without addons. Point is not about which gun can fire accurately over that distance, but rather what Scrub said two posts above.

    Vegetation concealment

I remember in a coop mission on Everon, where the steep hill with the castle on top is, a hostile AI patrol was all the way down in the village with me and a buddy almost at the castle (which is roughly 700 meters of distance in game). The mission was to take control of the castle. So we weren't doing anything but trying to get a good angle of approach when suddenly my buddy got capped by a single shot. Not from the guards at the castle, mind you. But from the xray eyes AI soldiers down in the village. They had no sniper in that patrol on a sidenote, and there were bushes and some rocks we were crawling amongst. How those guys ever saw us is beyond me, and how the AI managed to kill in one shot is as well. I just hope they fix this kinda stuff for Armed Assault.

    BIS open letter to community

Happy bday OFP, and many thanks to BIS for the years of fun you've provided us with. Keep it up guys ... and hope you'll find a publisher to suit all your needs soon. Can't wait for ArmA and Game 2 ^^

    MMOTFPS??

No not really ... you have to understand that companies which make mmos have nutter expenses maintaining their servers ... PLUS they have rather big teams to add new content constantly ... making this game their only job. So basically, they HAVE to charge a monthly fee just to keep going. I know I know there are games like Guild Wars coming which dun cost monthly but only the price for the retail box, but there, you dun get addon stuff for free but for the price of a regular addon box. So same story basically. And again, if a tactical shooter comes out which is like OFP ... but mmo... I am there in an instant!

    MMOTFPS??

I can honestly tell that I had a blast playing World War 2 Online (it got old plus it lost many players so I lost interest finally) ... and now this is something I know is not gonna happen - but IF BIS pulled a stunt and made a MMO out of their engine, I would subscribe for damn sure. Other than that I will be happily enjoying the mp part of "Game 2" when its out ^^

    Sell ARAS online

I'd prefer a boxed version since I don't have a credit card (despite being old enough to have one ^^) and don't intend on getting one either just to pay for one game. Using both a steam like system AND regular retail box would be ok tho... much like Valve did.

    MMOTFPS??

Well about the mmo thingy ... mmos are subscription based games which cost the devs a LOT of money to maintain those huge servers that can handle thousands of ppl online at the same time. While the next BIS game might be able to handle 64 players, maybe 128 like JO (doubtful but still), its hardly a mmo. PLUS its never gonna be a persistant world anyways ... cause that is the whole idea of the mmo concept. On the other hand tho - a round in this next BIS game might take a couple hours maybe, which is gonna make for some nice coop experience like previous posters said. Can't wait.

    BIS broken with CODEMASTERS?

Even IF CM fubar OFP 2 ... who cares? If they make it a good game even better ... but if they ruin it ... in all seriousness - its just the name of the franchise that gets a dent. The BIS game is gonna get a fresh title totally unrelated to CM's game and anything that CM fails to accomplish is not gonna have any impact on the BIS game.

    two operation flashpoint 2s?

So CM plans to release their OFP 2 six months before BIS comes out with their sequel. Plenty of time BEFORE and afterwards for BIS guys to actually hit the press and the internet to tell people what's going on ... so by the time CM releases their game, everyone who hasn't been sleeping under a rock should know about the situation Then again over here in german pc mags I see interviews been done with devs of lower profile games than OFP was ... yet all that BIS have done is stay low profile for years. Guys, that needs to change. In the world today, ppl need to be hyped up. That helps with sales and nothing else. I realize the Flashpoint community is still quite big, but on the other hand, with proper marketing etc, it could be bigger even now 4 years into retail. I mean ... the May editions of our pc mags are out, and NO print mag has ANYTHING about BIS, OFP2, Game 2, or even Armed Assault. You gotta be kidding me! About the two Flashpoints ... well... I am 100 % on buying the BIS game ... but also 100 % to check out CM's.

    BIS broken with CODEMASTERS?

Well... first of all hi y'all and thx to placebo for sorting my activation problems Its not that I hate CM for splitting with BIS... I think we all have way too little insight on what went on behind the scenes. And well... from a marketing point of view, it makes perfect sense for CM to keep the name OFP. At the end of the day, its an industry which wants to make money out of the games being released. So far... so good? NO! SHAME on Codemasters for never telling the community what went on. That is actually bugging me to no end. We had to read an official press release by BIS to start GUESSING what happened. That is just outrageous. If it hadn't been for the press release, we would all still think that over on the Codemasters forums, the game they talk about there is being developed by BIS still. That is total disrespect towards a unique community that still keeps the initial game alive with utter passion and dedication, towards ppl like me and many others who to this very day talk ppl into buying a copy thus filling some pockets out there. The info we got on OFP 2 was for the longest time only the odd new release date... then suddenly all hell breaks loose. So to just add a little more to the ongoing conspiracy theories - maybe CM and BIS parted ways long ago already and the delays came from CM's new croonies having to start from scratch? Who knows? Funny thing is - while CM are only doing the talk atm, BIS does the walk with 2 games for PC and one for Xbox in the pipe. And first of all Armed Assault is gonna keep me entertained until "Game2" comes out for sure, and that new game looks and sounds so awesome that, had I only seen a features list for it without previews, I woulda been like: "Yah right, keep dreaming ^^!" So once that game hits, until proven wrong, I believe that CM's OFP2 is gonna look like a sad excuse next to it. So I hope the publisher situation clarifies soonish, which HOWEVER makes me think a little ... CM hasn't said anything about WHO the devs for their game are ... neither has any BIS official clarified the Codie situation yet. How about CM and BIS are currently negotiating a new deal? Its a possibility at least. Then again, Zzzzz's post on the CM forums makes me believe its in deed over. Now ... it just doesn't make me believe in CM. Wouldn't be the first time that promises aren't being lived up to. So to sum it up - this whole mess could have been avoided b4 it even started... just one side would have had to step out of their corner and say something about it. So all in all - keep up the good work BIS and find yourself a decent partner, you deserve it. As for CM - prove to me that any game labelled OFP without BIS being involved might be anything I would remotely consider buying. But we'll see about that - if its good I am getting it for sure, and eventually will own both titles.
