American Civil War Mod v.1.2 released.

Then you must have a different song playing at the CWmod main menu than I do. It may not be called "Ashokan Farewell" in the game files, but as a bluegrass/old time musician, I can assure you that the tune is widely known as Ashokan Farewell. http://www.jayandmolly.com/ashokanfarewell.shtml a midi of the song can be found at the bottom of this page. Hopefully thats what you're looking for. -

Bear in mind that the map that contains Fredricksburg, the Wilderness map, is actually a broad swath of country. There are several streams, including the famous Wilderness run, that are not mapped - and there isnt anything wrong with that. I'm sure that if they placed every road and stream on that map just as they were at the time, it would have gone unnoticed by most and it would have been a ton of work. -

If you're importing a real Le Mat, be sure to look in to licensing and local laws - Â I can recall reading that pistol shotguns were illegal in most places without a particular license due to barrel length laws. Â Not sure how it all works, but it never hurts to find out for sure. Sounds like a fun pickup in any case. -

Fantastic work, as always. Â I'm especially impressed with the new cavalry - Its also great to be able to have mounted officers for the infantry too. In any case, you've certainly earned your retirement. Â Thanks for all the hard work. -

3 of the 6 were killed or wounded in action during the Civil War. Â But you are right, with the possible exception of Stuart, none of them fought personally. Â I'm just being a nerd anyway, dont take me seriously. Â The mod is outstanding and I cant wait for the new updates. -

Things are looking great, cant wait until release. I was curious if, since cavalry is now possible, there would be some sort of irregular cavalrymen? Â Perhaps on the resistance side there could be a cavalryman with mostly civilian clothing and a union overcoat? Â That was pretty much standard wear for both rebel and union irregulars in the border war in the KS/MO/OK region. Â It would be great to be able to throw together some battles between those forces. Â Jesse James, Cole Younger, "Bloody Bill" Anderson, William Quantrill, and tons of other future western outlaws actually served in that theater of operations during the civil war. Â If you're looking for some fun characters to skin for the game, those would be pretty interesting and might also be of use to anybody who wanted to make wild west style missions later on. -

Forgive me if this dead horse has been beaten already, but will the new cannons also include new shot? While I like seeing the cannons in missions, I have found them to be mostly useless unless you score a direct hit against an opponent. Having canister or explosive shells would allow the cannons to be more useful for the type of fighting the game allows. In any case, good luck with everything, this is a great mod! -

Yes, the Irish Brigade would be a great addition. Â Even if you only made an Irish Brigade flag bearer with their green flag it would be cool. Â In answer to the other question, I have played that North vs South game - I didnt care for it, the win conditions and controls were very odd. Â If you're looking for a realistic and fun civil war strategy game, check out Sierra's Robert E. Lee Civil War Generals II. Â Hex based game that is too old to find in stores these days, but it is very very accurate in terms of maps, units, weapons, and even casualty rates. Â Of all the computer games I've ever owned, CWG II is the only one that has constantly been carried over when I get a new computer. Â It never gets old. -

Will the smoothbore musket also have a higher rate of fire than the rifles? Also, something that might or might not be good to implement is the so called "Buck 'n ball" round. I've read on several occasions where regiments unfortunate enough to be armed with these outdated weapons would cut a .69 caliber round into pieces and place them, along with the standard .69 ball, in the paper cartridge. At close range, you have a very big, very deadly shotgun. Perhaps troops armed with the musket could have 2 choices for ammo, much like the standard BIS shotgun has 2 choices? Just a suggestion. I'm enjoying the mod and look forward to new releases! -

I think I've finally figured out how to make proper briefings, and I've started making a string of missions based on Gettysburg. Â If they are playable and enjoyable when its all said and done, I'll send em out. The first mission I made was based on Bigelow's defense of the Trostle farm. Â In the actual battle of Gettysburg, Bigelow's battery of artillery had to hold off a wave of attacking confederates on the 2nd day while a new line was formed to the rear. Â But...when I placed the battery in the editor and the enemy infantry drew in to range, I was rather disappointed by the fact that you virtually have to hit the enemies dead on with the cannons in order to kill them. Â Perhaps a variety of ammunition could be implemented in the future release, for example canister, grapeshot, or shells. Â It would make it far more interesting to fight infantry that way. Another little thing that bugged me was the way in which gunners seem to jump in and out of their cannons with no rhyme or reason. Â Is there going to be a fix for that in the next release? Â A further little detail is the weapons for artillerists. Â Would it be possible to eliminate the Sharps carbines they currently have and instead give pistols or melee weapons? Â I read about batteries overrun by infantry fighting with the gun equipment, such as sponge staffs and hand spikes. Â Would this be a possibility, like fighting with the flag staff currently is? Â As always, I dont mean to be too picky, I truly enjoy this mod. Â Those are just some little details I'd personally like to see in a future release. Â Artillery is more of a novelty in the present form, its not at all effective in the game. Â Perhaps that could be changed. Â Ah - just remembered one more thing. Â I have found it virtually impossible to make a battle line of infantry. Â The moment an enemy approaches within 50 or 100 yards, the friendly troops immediately break ranks and run in ones and twos right in to the enemy positions. Â Its terribly frustrating, and it seems that no matter what waypoints I use, they continue to do this. Â Is there a fix I dont know about, or is that just part of this mod? -

I'm looking very forward to the new CW release, this mod and online play with standard BIS stuff is all I use OFP for these days. I hope you folks arent planning to toy with the ballistics TOO much in the next release - there seems to be a common misconception that civil war rifles were inaccurate at even medium ranges, and I hope this game doesnt reflect that.  Muskets, yes - these are smoothbore weapons and fire an inaccurate ball at close ranges (but at my last check, there are no muskets in the game).  Rifles - quite a different story, very accurate, quite good out to several hundred meters if the person firing it was capable.  I think that the bayonet is already 'pumped up' a lot in the current release.  Any student of the Civil War would be fully aware of the fact that bayonet charges were a rarity because the rifles were far too efficient to allow for close combat in most cases.  I'd just hate to see it turn in to a "fire one volley and cross bayonets" kind of thing, that would be a slap in realism's face (if you're trying for realism, that is). Two of my great interests are firearms, and of course, the Civil War, so I'm kind of picky on both counts  .  I've been turning out half-assed missions for my own use based on real battles, but my inability to make breifings sure hurts things.  If I could figure out breifings, I'd be glad to submit to you what I have made at some point.  One thing I found kind of disappointing is that OFP just isnt much for large scale battles - and most Civil War fights you'll find movement details on that could be equated to OFP's editor are large scale.  However, I was reading through one of my books of Ambrose Bierce's short stories, and most of his works describe small unit battles, company at most, individuals and squads more often.  A copy of Ambrose Bierce's Civil War stories can be had for only a couple of dollars, and would make a great aid to anyone trying to make accurate Civil War missions for small scale fighting. Regardless, this mod is still my favorite and I look forward to playing your new release! -

Great work on this mod, I have been away from OFP for a while, and when I finally got back in to the swing of things and saw a Civil War mod, I couldn't wait to try it out. Â I'm a history buff, so this sort of thing really wins me over. Â I've had a great time messing with the editor, but unfortunately my mission making skills arent what they used to be and I'm always left with big ideas but not the means to make them happen . Â In any case, I just wanted to say great job, and I look forward to perhaps seeing a full campaign or some single missions. By the way, I noticed that a few pages back somebody asked the name of the song that plays on the intro page. Â Its called 'Ashokan Farewell'. Â Thats another bonus for this mod, I'm not only a civil war history nerd, I love listening to bluegrass and old timey music. Â Now if only there were some marching music for missions...
