    Island Panthera v1.0

A month after I heard about this and started waiting for it, it comes out the day after I leave on vacation :D Looking forward to checking this out, even if the wait will be a little longer than I had supposed.

    Island Panthera (WIP)

This is wonderful. I hope to be reminded of some wonderful memories. I drove through the area with my family once, on the way from Venice to Berlin. We got tired and found a Pension in Jesenice. They seemed surprised to see Americans (I don't think Jesenice is the biggest tourist draw). No one spoke English. Fortunately they spoke German so we could communicate. They were astonished that we didn't know about Bled, and told us that in the morning we had to backtrack to see it. It was beautiful, but what I remember most is something my mother said. We were in our car parked by an ice cafe, and she said something so funny we sat and laughed for five minutes. The car shook, and the people eating their ice just stared. I was very glad the car had German plates, so they could think it was a bunch of crazy Germans :) And to think we almost drove straight through. I'm glad we took some time to see a small part of that beautiful region. Sorry for the travelogue, but I am really looking forward to going back :D

    Will ArmA 2 support FreeTrack?!

No Free Track = no sale. My Track Clip Pro works great with my current webcam; I'm not shelling out $100 for another one that won't even work in Skype when I'm not gaming.

    Will ArmA 2 support FreeTrack?!

It's worse than you think. "Twin high-resolution 640x480 (920,000 pixels) LCD displays" The 1024x768 appears to be the max resolution supported on the input signal, but whatever you feed it, it won't display more than 640*480, as that's all it has.

    Uhao island

Aye, cause Uhao island will have the whole island detailed and modelled, instead of small chunks of it like in Crysis. And there won't be convenient 30 foot cliffs everywhere keeping you confined to the detailed part. I'll prefer wandering around this one.

    Sprite-Surface VS. (Detail-)Textured-Surface

The thing I don't like about North Sahrani is the obvious line where the grass sprites end. Â It isn't so bad in the south; the grass is almost the same color as the ground texture underneath so it isn't so jarring when it ends. In the north however, the colors don't match somehow and it looks really stark. Â It seems like this at least would be a slightly easier fix, involving adjusting the color of a few textures. Compare: http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/7888/armanorthgrasspf5.th.jpg In the south it's hard to tell where the grass ends http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/6021/armasouthgrassuu7.th.jpg In the north it's painfully obvious.

    Info on upcoming 1.08 patch

I checked the tempareture after reboot (20c motherboard & 40c Processor)... I'm not using overclocking... In the time it takes to reboot and get to the BIOS temperatures can drop a lot. It doesn't say much. Further, CPU and MOBO temps aren't the only ones; GPU temps could be high as well. If you can, you might want to run Arma windowed and pay attention to CPU/GPU temps as you play.

    Ordering men to re-arm

Yeah it's possible. Not sitting at my computer right now so I can't check for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's in there with the other actions. After selecting someone, the 6 button I think? Should be in there.

    "Do a barrel roll!"

I couldn't tell you if the Harrier's roll rate is accurate, but the T-38's my father used to fly as an instructor (training planes! did two barrel rolls per second. One of the reasons they wore helmets was to protect their head when it smacked the glass on going into a roll. Planes in a lot of flight sims (at least back when I played flight sims a decade or more ago) roll glacially compared to real life, and a plane with realistic values takes some getting used to. That said, I haven't even tried Arma's Harrier yet, and as said, I have no idea how they perform IRL. Just saying, it's roll rate might not be too far off.

m107 recoil crazy unrealistic in game

M4 recoil seems fine in game. (Of course, when we say recoil we mean muzzle climb, so I'll use that). The small amount of muzzle climb seen in those videos is greatly amplified downrange. ArmA gets this close enough (it isn't orders of magnitude off). The Barrett's muzzle climb is obviously ridiculous though ;)

    ArmA Public Beta Patch 1.05.5143

Was watching opfor and bluefor go at it and someone flew up in the air. Â Tried a mission with me (with AT) and a friendly. Â Shooting him with AT sent him rocketing into the air just as it always did. Â Maybe I started the wrong execuatable? Â Doubt it though.. I'll check later. Anyone else still seeing this?

    bullet travel is doing weird

secuROM stops nothing. There are noCDs but they aren't even needed, the game runs as is with virtual drives. I say this not to encourage piracy but to urge publishers not to bother with secuROM. The only thing it does is *try* to take away fair use rights. I'm glad it fails, as it is nice not to wear out my disk. CDs sometimes seem as sensitive as iPod cases :D Now, the existence of noCDs doesn't mean pirates win. BIS is very effective at thwarting pirates by blacklisting keys and such. The game can't be run by pirates (you can see their frustration on cd backup forums, from which they are promptly banned for attempting to run an illegal copy instead of a backup). They are thwarted, and secuROM has nothing to do with it, so I don't mind blasting secuROM a bit. It's just an inconvenience to legal owners. I wish the publishers would rely on BIS's effective methods instead of tacking on secuROM crap. Fazit: no need to uninstall virtual drives. Only requirement is a legal copy and the key that came with it. Props to BIS for succesfully protecting their investment and I hope it stays that way.

    Arma under Linux

Adding my two cents that Operation Flashpoint works fine under Wine (plain Wine, Cedega not needed). Bushes and roads flicker a bit. Not ideal, but it works. Other games (Farcry, Deus Ex, Jedi Academy, Starcraft) work flawlessly. So there's hope that ArmA will at some point. DirectX is heavily worked on in Wine at the moment. Along with those games that work fine with Wine, there are native clients for Quake4, Doom3, Unreal Tournament 2004 etc. I get quite a lot of gaming done on Linux. I do keep a windows partition around though for ArmA and some others. If I can use it less, great. I'll keep tabs on this and if I ever get ArmA going in Wine, I'll post.

    Do you like Sahrani?

Come visit Norway, nothing unusual about that  Now I would agree with that if that was grass hills made of earth it certainly looks weird, but notice there's a rock texture there which seems pretty realistic compared to the topography where I live, I think the lack of "jaggedness" in the terrain where there's rock textures is the main factor making it appear unrealistic. I agree.  for the terrain. And also... Finally... Odd formations exist, as Opteryx said, in some places those would be called normal.  Of the links you give, two aren't as steep as Perez.  The third is nowhere near as tall. [/nitpick] But sure, steep places exist.  I happen to live near Devil's Tower (think Close Encounters of the Third Kind).  Places in Hawaii are really really steep (Nuuanu Pali for example).  Both are rocky.  The Pali is quite eroded.  Pico de Perez looks weird for being so steep and smooth (as was mentioned above).  That and the perfection of its conicalness.  Mt Fuji (and formerly Mt St Helens ) is known for its symetry.  Pico de Perez is similar, but three times as steep, and it looks weird.  One won't find a mountain like that. Some other spectacular locations: Machu Picchu Three Gorges (and Lesser Three Gorges ) Stone Forest Guilin Huangshan Ha Long Bay The Matterhorn Yosemite They still don't convince me that Perez looks believable.  Smooth, symetric, steep, meh.  Sahrani doesn't look either glacier carved (Matterhorn, Norway, Yosemite), Karst (Ha Long, Guilin, Stone Forest), or volcanic (St Helens, Nuuanu Pali, Devil's Tower). Now I don't mean to make a big thing of it.  The game is great, and for the most part the island looks good, I just miss flatter forested land, and think Perez is overdone.

    Do you like Sahrani?

Sahrani looks nice, but I do have issues with it. Â As was mentioned, all the forests are on hillsides. Â There are maybe one or two flatter areas with some woods (Pita, Hunapu), but mostly they are on slopes, which means ridiculous exaggerated slopes like one almost never sees in real life. Â exhibit A: Full size (Pico de Perez looks ridiculous)

ARMA HD to lowres in Pictures

Looking at the first two pics in the first post, specifically at the three tall skinny trees in the middle - with the AA on they are quite blurred, and I don't like the effect at all. Â Messing around with AA, 2x and 8x look ok, 4x AA makes everything blurry, like a bad version of post processing on high (on 7900gt). Â Anyway, I prefer jaggies (which I don't notice when moving) to horrible blur. *edit* specified card

    Lag?  In Single Player?

Arma can't interrupt an animation to start a new one (like falling over dead). If your target is in the middle of a long animation like pulling out his AT weapon, he won't react to being hit until it is done. Actually, that might not be your problem. IIRC, damage skins appear the moment they are hit, it is only the animation that is delayed. If your blood sprites are delayed too, well dunno.

    1.4 VS 1.5 with E6600 + 8800GTX

Stalker? Prepare for disappointment on a scale Arma could never hope to achieve. It's a tight little game, but nothing like the concept we all fell in love with so many years ago.

    Binoculars, why can't i...

+1 This would be a great fix. No need to have a "lower binocs" key, just lower them automatically when the player m.oves and bring them back up when he stops. Actually, don't lower them at all if the player takes a trivial step to the side. Lower them after movement of more than a foot (1/3 meter) or so. On can easily shift his position to get around a branch without the need to put them down/invoke an animation at all. Longer movements should cause them to be lowered. This would be a lot more natural than switching to the gun and back imho.

I find a tweak that help my Arma performance.

That would be because it is a .bin.txt file. For whatever reason, by default windows hides file extensions. It is hiding the .txt, so all you see is .bin. Change settings to not hide them, then remove the .txt.

    ArmA - Performance: 1.02(1.04)vs1.05

blast. mySQL is getting overloaded :-/

    ArmA - Performance: 1.02(1.04)vs1.05

I did something similar, checking FPS in both versions. Run the same test on both versions (1.04 and 1.05) without grass and your results might be the same (they were for me), suggesting the difference is because of the grass layer. Then again, my test was looking at static scenes. Moving around may expose new inefficiencies in loading textures and what not. Still, try without the grass (terrain detail low, on 1.04 and 1.05) and see how they compare.

    Dissapearing engine sounds...

So odd.. I fixed it by turning EAX on. With it off sounds would eventually cut out.

I find a tweak that help my Arma performance.

Laffo @ not reading Matt's post or the link. The link has no download, it tells you how to create a batch file to automate what Matt describes doing with the Windows task manager. Can't imagine it would do much on a dual core, ArmA pretty much already has one to itself.
