The Iraq invasion shows the following: a well executed military operation against a nearly helpless opponent but with no plan, afterthought and clear aims; look at what has happened and is happening now. Now remember the operations in afganistan (with Osama somehow making his escape from even the tightest circles) as well as earlier investigations on events that transpired during the last 6 years. There is a pattern formed from all this for the U.S. government capability and agenda.

According to what I have read, corroded hydrogen peroxide containement in one torpedo caused the initial explosion that triggered the disaster. The ship then crashed head first to the bottom and that is when the entire magazine in the torpedo room blew up. A norwegian monitoring station detected about 4 richter earthquake from that! Under the circumstances, it is really amazing that there is anything left from the sub, a proof of its solid construction. The shockwave from the blast pulverized everyone in the front compartments, the only survivors were behind the nuclear reactor where the thick shielding dampened the force of the blast.

Every once in a while I check this thread to find out gathered information about the situation in Iraq. It looks like the purpose of the coalition forces has failed completely (exploiting Iraqi oil). Now everyone is abandoning Iraq to the current situation and a weak political leadership is left to face the massive issues. Is some help going in to Iraq for the reconstruction? Is Iraqi oil going to be available anytime soon to the market? Is there an alternative to the US for cheap oil in the coming years? I am asking those in light of the potential oil crisis (Peak oil) that may start after 2010. Even if the date is incorrect, it is only a matter of time with current growth and consumption untill this becomes a problem.

Those are priceless ! Just read the story with dilithium mineral and mr Bolognese http://419eater.com/html/user_subs/godfather/godfather.htm

They are making a sequel?!!! We 'll see if they learned anything.

There is an old thread about this somewhere here. With the new patches they have fixed all the serious bugs and somehow improved the horrible preformance. It looks like my prediction in that old thread is true; by the time we get OPF2 the next decade, soldner will be enjoyable

Are you all playing with realistic torpedo aiming?
-
Notice the acceleration! Soon they will need anti G suits to drive those things.
-
Why are they doing that, didnt the last one sell well? Greedy bastards

Ok I did a quick search on the UV, this is very interesting. Apparently it is only fond in later models. I didnt find anything on possible sources on helicopters so Ill take a wild guess and assume it concerns fixed wing aircraft as well where uv light could possibly come through the nozzles from inside the fan, or even the burning fuel, I am not sure. I dont know if this would apply strictly to helicopters, correct me if I am wrong. Anyway, lasers seem to be all the latest joy in the field. I wonder if more powerful devices with an all around FOV are incorporated into fighters, this would make dogfighting and those fancy russian missiles obsolete.

IR missiles can detect UV radiation? There is a differential between the helicopter and the environment in UV? I have never heard of that, are you sure it is not two different IR frequencies? If you are correct could you provide some info, I am curious about that.

Enforcing new rules will not solve this problem: you will need to relax them instead and allow threads of more varied content in the OFFTOPIC forum. There is only so much you can hear or say about war, history, politics, technology, war, disasters and war; most people eventually get bored and run out of ideas.

How effective are those? I though they were a last ditch attempt anyway. Until they install missile tracking radar like in the Typhoon, spoofing will be difficult and missiles dangerous. The statistics in Desert Storm and Chechnya prove it: almost half of the helicopters killed were from IR portables.
-
They have a number of helicopters and vehicles with long-range cannon but the visibility is horrible. Joint ops managed this quite well with no performance issues, why cant anyone else do this in their games?
-
They couldnt have chosen a better actor for the role, he looks like a cut and paste of the hero in the original. I am afraid it will end up as bad as AvsP. And dont forget.. IBTL

If by this argument you mean a well armed helicopter against a small team of soldiers then the portable air to air missiles are ideal. They are easy to carry, have a long range and allow hit and run with a very good chance to kill the helicopter. HMG's are heavy, difficult to carry and need a little time to set up and unless in closer ranges they have a lower chance to kill. Against armored gunships they are not very effective and need extensive fire to kill, not too much but enough to spot and blast you. Heavy machine guns on a tank or APC are a different matter though. IR missiles cannot be spoofed effectively unless you see them coming. As for the helicopters going down in Iraq, I hope you are not talking about that farmer with the enfield killing an apatche

Weather phenomena are very complex dynamic systems yet they are not very robust to changes (appart from their sheer size and unlike any other coplex system like biological pathways or even economics). Water of different temperature has different content of salt and different density. Slight density gradients are what keep the gulf stream going and the gulf stream keeps the english isles and northwestern Europe relatively warm. Without the Gulf stream there is no reason why these places wont end up as Siberia, they are in a close parallel anyway.

The best way would be to use a portable heat seeker and get the helicopter unaware. You can dissapear after one good shot. I remember seeing a video of chechen rebels killing a russian gunship; they waited for the first of the team to come and dissapear and they shot the second just as it was moving away from them and about to dissapear, facing to another direction. Anything else is for infantry a solution of necessity. Heavy machine guns need a good gunner, a prepared position and extensive fire, you wont live through a single ecounter. RPGs have very low range, are slow and due to their warheads do very little damage unless they hit a critical component. Americans underestimated them and learned in the hard way that at close range and against hovering helicopters they are not harmless.

Just look at Iraq, if MBT are properly designed and operated they take very low casualties. I would like to know how they will fare agaist lasers that fry the optics and blind the crew.

While this article may be exagerated, it is not entirely impossible. Like I said before progress on alternative sources of energy is either done privately and never publicised or it is bashed upon. It is not some ''evil conspiracy plan'', if these were implemented, American economy would quickly collapse and you would all live in poverty. The rest of the world would follow. Even third world countries would be in trouble without rich investors to exploit them.

Wow that is some attitude! Me thinks you take yourself too seriously! Better ease down, you are spamming just like me.

I am using sabot (the first loadout?). I have tried HEAT but it doesnt work either. I have only managed to smash the tracks, nothing else.

How do you kill that sherman in the first t34 mission? It can take anything no matter where I hit it.

Most scientists must make ''discoveries'' within the status quo. I.E. no global warming, no rising sea levels, no chemical pollutants, no efficient engines, no alternative forms of energy like fusion that can change the world (and ruin oil companies) overnight and above all, no discoveries that downplay their own positions. In that respect, most scientists are like any other lackey. Do not expect serious effort with TBA in power.
